The Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are AMD Zen 4 desktop processors for the AM5 platform, listed by AMD in May 2024. The 8700F has more cores and threads and a higher maximum frequency; both have a 65 W typical TDP, lack built-in graphics, and include a Wraith Stealth cooler in AMD’s guide. Either needs a discrete graphics card for display output.

How the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F compare

AMD’s May 2024 specifications distinguish the processors mainly by core count, clock figures, and total cache. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results.

Which model fits your workload?

Ryzen 7 8700F

Its 8 cores and 16 threads give it more listed parallel-processing capacity than the 8400F. That may make it the more relevant candidate when your applications can use additional cores, but specifications alone do not establish how much faster it will be in a particular game or program.

Ryzen 5 8400F

The 8400F has 6 cores and 12 threads. Its listed base clock is 0.1 GHz higher than the 8700F’s, while its maximum frequency is 0.3 GHz lower. A higher base-clock number does not by itself make it faster overall; workload-specific results and current prices would be needed to judge value.

Plan for a separate graphics card

AMD lists no built-in graphics for either processor. A desktop built around one therefore needs a discrete graphics card to provide a working display output. Do not assume that the display connectors on an AM5 motherboard will work without a graphics-capable processor.

Choose an AM5 motherboard and verify support

Both CPUs use AMD’s AM5 platform. Before buying a board, check its manufacturer’s CPU support list for the exact processor and any required BIOS version. A socket match alone does not guarantee that a particular board will boot with a processor until its firmware supports it.

Does either processor include a cooler?

AMD’s May 2024 guide lists a Wraith Stealth cooler with both models. Confirm the contents of the specific regional retail package before purchase, since the guide does not verify the contents of every seller’s listing.

What the launch information does—and does not—tell buyers

Tom’s Hardware reported on April 11, 2024 that AMD had added both processors to its website and confirmed a worldwide debut; its report said pricing had not been announced at that time. That is historical launch context, not current pricing or availability information. The available specifications do not establish 2026 regional prices, stock, retailer listings, or independent head-to-head performance. Compare current local prices and suitable independent testing before deciding which is the better buy.
