The Ryzen 5 9600 trails the Ryzen 5 9600X by only a few percentage points in the cited benchmark comparisons, while sharing its six-core, 12-thread Zen 5 design and including a stock cooler. That makes the 9600 attractive when it costs meaningfully less; the 9600X is the faster choice when its price premium is small or you already have a suitable cooler.
How different are the Ryzen 5 9600 and 9600X?
Both are AM5 desktop processors built on Zen 5, with six cores, 12 threads, 32MB of L3 cache and a 65W default TDP. Their main specification difference is clock speed: the 9600X has a 100MHz higher base clock and a 200MHz higher maximum boost clock.
| Specification | Ryzen 5 9600 | Ryzen 5 9600X |

| Included cooler | Wraith Stealth | None |
AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600 specifications and Ryzen 5 9600X specifications list those core, clock, cache and power details. Both require an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory, so choosing between them does not by itself change the motherboard or memory platform.
What do the benchmark results show?
Early benchmark comparison
In a March 27, 2025 report, HotHardware described the 9600 as 3.2% behind the 9600X in single-threaded performance and 2.2% behind in multi-threaded performance. Those are results from the benchmark snapshot discussed in that report, not a promise that every application will show the same gap. Read HotHardware’s report.

PassMark comparison dated September 23, 2026
PassMark listed a CPU Mark score of 29,315 for the 9600 and 30,050 for the 9600X, plus single-thread ratings of 4,379 and 4,569, respectively. The comparison page says its results combine 9,697 benchmarks submitted from PerformanceTest and are updated daily; the values are therefore a changing aggregate, not a fixed laboratory result. See PassMark’s comparison.
PassMark is synthetic: its CPU-focused workloads do not establish a corresponding gaming frame-rate difference. HotHardware also cautions that synthetic results may not map neatly to real applications, especially games that can be limited by memory latency. TechSpot’s independent 9600X review supplies application and gaming context for that processor, but its reported 7% Cinebench multi-core improvement over the earlier 7600X is not a direct 9600-versus-9600X test. Does the Ryzen 5 9600 come with a cooler?
Yes. AMD includes a Wraith Stealth cooler with the Ryzen 5 9600. The 9600X does not include a thermal solution, and AMD recommends a premium air cooler for it. That bundled cooler makes the 9600 less expensive to equip out of the box, although cooler suitability depends on the build and intended use. AMD’s quick-reference guide lists the included cooling details.

There is no dependable gaming-FPS verdict from the benchmark figures above: they are synthetic CPU aggregates, not a matched gaming test suite. For a gaming build, compare the actual prices of both processors and the cooler you would use, then consider whether that extra spend is better put toward another component. The same AM5 and DDR5 platform applies to either CPU.

- Can deliver fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
Choose the Ryzen 5 9600 when
- Its price is clearly lower than the 9600X in your market.
- You want the bundled Wraith Stealth rather than buying a cooler separately.
- You are comfortable with slightly lower clock specifications and the small benchmark deficits reported in the cited comparisons.
Choose the Ryzen 5 9600X when
- The price premium is small and you want the higher listed base and boost clocks.
- You already own a suitable cooler, so the lack of an included cooler adds little to your build cost.
- You prioritize the faster result in the cited benchmark aggregates over the 9600’s lower entry cost.
Check local boxed availability and street prices before deciding. HotHardware reported limited boxed availability for the 9600 in March 2025 and said AMD had described it unofficially as aimed primarily at OEMs and system integrators, though boxed chips existed at that time. Availability can vary by retailer and region.
