The AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT was built for 1080p gaming, and launch-era reviews found it delivered strong rasterized performance in their tested games. That makes it a capable card in its original context—not a guarantee of smooth performance in today’s games or a current buying recommendation. Its 6GB of memory, lack of hardware ray tracing, and a launch-era firmware change all deserve consideration.

What the RX 5600 XT is—and what this review can establish

The RX 5600 XT is a discrete graphics card in AMD’s Radeon RX 5000 series, based on its RDNA architecture. AMD introduced it in January 2020 as a 1080p gaming card. The company’s “ultimate” gaming language was launch marketing, rather than an independent assessment. Its announcement listed partner manufacturers including ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX, so retail cards were not all the same physical design or firmware configuration. AMD’s launch announcement also gave a US launch MSRP of $279; that is a historical launch figure, not a current price.

The available evidence is from launch-era reviews. It can describe how particular RX 5600 XT boards performed in those reviewers’ test environments, but it does not establish current availability, used-market value, driver-support status, or performance in present-day games.

RX 5600 XT specifications

Tom’s Hardware’s 2020 review reports these product specifications. They describe the card’s reference-level configuration; individual partner boards can differ in clocks, cooling, power limits, and BIOS settings.

Specification Review-reported value
GPU Navi 10
Compute units 36
Stream processors 2,304
Memory 6GB GDDR6
Memory bus 192-bit
Board power 150W

These are specifications, not benchmark results. Tom’s Hardware’s RX 5600 XT review provides the figures and the performance context below.

How it performed at 1080p in launch-era tests

Tom’s Hardware reported more than 60 frames per second at 1080p in most of its tested games, with Metro and Ghost Recon as exceptions. In that review’s comparison set, the RX 5600 XT beat the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and won more matchups than it lost against the GeForce RTX 2060. Those conclusions apply to that review’s selected titles and test setup, not every game or configuration.

Engadget’s January 2020 review also framed the card around high-frame-rate 1080p gaming and published results from its own test setup. Its frame rates, like Tom’s Hardware’s, should not be treated as portable predictions: game version, graphics settings, CPU, drivers, partner-board design, and test method all affect results. TechSpot’s review summary adds launch-era context, including the late BIOS change that affected testing.

Limits that matter when comparing the card

6GB of video memory

The RX 5600 XT has 6GB of GDDR6. That capacity is a meaningful constraint when comparing it with cards that have more memory, particularly for games or settings that demand more video memory. The launch reviews do not establish how it performs across today’s titles, so the capacity alone cannot predict a specific modern game’s frame rate or playability.

No hardware ray tracing

The RX 5600 XT does not provide hardware ray tracing. In its 2020 comparison, TechRadar highlighted ray tracing as a feature advantage of Nvidia’s RTX 2060. That is useful period context, not a current comparison of value or features across today’s graphics cards. TechRadar’s review also discusses the RX 5600 XT’s launch and retesting.

Partner boards are not interchangeable

Board makers sold their own versions, which can have different cooling, clocks, power limits, and firmware. A review result for one model is not automatically a result for every RX 5600 XT. This distinction is particularly relevant because of the card’s launch firmware change.

The late VBIOS change: what used-card buyers should check

The RX 5600 XT launch was complicated by a late VBIOS update. TechRadar says it retested the Sapphire Pulse after installing the updated firmware; TechSpot’s summary also notes the last-minute BIOS change and the complication of manual installation. This history does not establish the firmware currently installed on any particular used card, nor whether a vendor still supports that model.

Before buying a specific board, identify its exact manufacturer and model, then check its BIOS version and firmware instructions with that manufacturer. Do not flash a BIOS intended for another model or assume every vendor uses the same file. Confirm any warranty implications with the manufacturer before changing firmware.

Is the RX 5600 XT a good buy now?

The launch reviews support a positive verdict on its original role: it was a strong 1080p rasterization card in the games and configurations those reviewers tested. They do not establish whether it is a good purchase today. Current pricing, availability, driver support, and performance in modern games are not established here, so a current recommendation or fair used price would require up-to-date evidence and a comparison against alternatives available in your market.

If you are evaluating one, weigh the specific board’s condition and firmware alongside its 6GB memory and your intended games and settings. Compare its actual asking price with current alternatives rather than relying on the $279 US launch MSRP or launch-era comparisons.
