Microsoft has announced a planned, large-scale deployment of AMD Helios systems on Azure for frontier-model inference. Microsoft also reported 40% growth in Azure and other cloud-services revenue, but did not say how much of that consumption runs on AMD hardware.
What AMD actually reported
AMD reported $11.5 billion in total revenue for Q2 2026. Its SEC-filed results show $6.7 billion in Data Center revenue for the three months ended June 27, 2026, up 107% year over year. For the six months ended June 27, Data Center revenue was $12.5 billion, up 81% year over year.
AMD attributed that Data Center performance primarily to strong demand for both EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 Series GPUs. Because the company grouped those product families together, the reported figures cannot be used to calculate Instinct-only revenue.
“We delivered an excellent quarter, with record revenue and profitability as Data Center revenue more than doubled year-over-year,” AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su said in the company’s August 4, 2026 Q2 release.

Did Instinct sales beat expectations?
The cited official results do not establish that conclusion. AMD described strong Instinct demand, but they do not provide a separate Instinct sales number, a product-level margin figure, or a comparison with a named analyst or company forecast.
That distinction matters: Data Center revenue can rise because of EPYC CPU sales, Instinct GPU sales, systems, or a combination of those businesses. The 107% quarterly increase is a reported segment result, not proof that Instinct revenue alone exceeded expectations.

What Microsoft is doing with AMD on Azure
In July 2026, AMD and Microsoft announced an expanded partnership. Microsoft plans to deploy AMD Helios rack-scale systems at scale on Azure for frontier-model inference.
AMD describes Helios as a rack-scale platform combining:

This is a deployment plan, not a reported completed rollout. The announcement does not disclose how many systems Microsoft has installed, when capacity will become generally available, the value of the purchase, or how much customers have already consumed on the hardware.
What Microsoft’s Azure numbers do—and do not—show
Microsoft reported that Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 40% in fiscal 2026 third quarter. On its earnings call, the company said capacity delivered earlier in the quarter enabled increased consumption across AI and non-AI services, while demand continued to exceed available capacity.

- 48GB AI graphics accelerator
Those comments describe Azure as a whole. Microsoft did not allocate the growth or the consumption increase to AMD Instinct GPUs, Helios systems, training workloads, or inference workloads. Azure’s reported growth therefore cannot be converted into an AMD-chip usage figure.

Why the distinction between plans and consumption matters
Planned deployment
A partnership announcement signals a technical and commercial commitment, but it is forward-looking until systems are delivered, configured, and made available to workloads.

Realized usage
Consumption requires live capacity and customer workloads running on it. Neither AMD nor Microsoft quantified that usage for the Helios announcement.
Reported revenue
AMD’s Data Center revenue is recognized financial performance for a broad segment. It should not be treated as a direct proxy for the number of Instinct GPUs sold or deployed at Azure.

- Whether AMD begins reporting Instinct revenue separately from EPYC or gives a product-family outlook.
- Microsoft disclosures identifying Helios availability, installed capacity, or Azure consumption on AMD accelerators.
- Evidence that separates inference demand from AI training demand.
- Purchase commitments, shipment timing, or customer deployments tied specifically to MI350 or MI455X systems.
Bottom line on the headline claim
AMD’s latest figures support a strong-growth story for its Data Center business and confirm that Instinct demand is an important driver. They do not prove that standalone Instinct sales beat a specific expectation. Microsoft is planning to expand AMD-powered infrastructure on Azure, while Azure demand remains above available capacity, but Microsoft has not quantified how much of that consumption uses AMD chips.
