Yes. AMD first passed 40% in Steam’s CPU-vendor figures in July 2025, reaching 40.39%, while Intel remained ahead at about 59.5%. The milestone describes CPU usage among surveyed Steam customers—not worldwide CPU sales or every PC in use.

When did AMD first pass 40% on Steam?

AMD crossed the threshold in the July 2025 Steam Hardware & Software Survey. PC Gamer reported AMD at 40.39%, while Intel’s share was 59.5%. Tom’s Hardware and GamesRadar also described it as AMD’s first time above 40% in Steam’s processor-vendor category.

Intel still had the larger share at that point. The result marked a milestone for AMD’s presence among Steam users, not a change in which vendor held the majority.

What does Steam’s CPU share measure?

Valve describes the Steam Hardware & Software Survey as a monthly, optional, anonymous collection of information about the hardware and software used by Steam customers. Its percentages are a snapshot of the surveyed Steam user base. They are not global CPU shipment figures, a census of all installed PCs, or a measure of AMD’s revenue. Valve’s survey page provides the official data and methodology context.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

That distinction matters when interpreting the headline: “40% CPU share” here means a share of Steam’s reported processor-vendor usage, rather than 40% of all computer processors sold or in use.

AMD’s share in Valve’s later survey

Valve’s August 2026 Windows processor-vendor table lists AuthenticAMD at 45.52% and GenuineIntel at 54.47%. That later reading shows AMD remained above the July 2025 milestone in the latest official table covered here. It is a Windows-specific Steam usage snapshot; it should not be treated as a measure of the entire PC market.

Which Ryzen CPUs are associated with the gains?

Reporting on the milestone points to AMD’s gaming-focused Ryzen processors with 3D V-Cache as part of the explanation, including the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Their prominence helps explain why AMD’s gaming-CPU position is relevant to the survey, but the survey itself does not identify which processor models caused the overall shift or prove that any one chip drove it.

How to read the AMD–Intel comparison

  • Steam usage: AMD was at 40.39% and Intel at 59.5% in the July 2025 milestone report.
  • Later snapshot: Valve’s August 2026 Windows table lists AMD at 45.52% and Intel at 54.47%.
  • Product context: Reports associate Ryzen 3D V-Cache products with AMD’s appeal to gamers, but usage-share data is not a CPU benchmark.
  • Market scope: Steam’s voluntary customer sample can show a platform trend; it cannot stand in for broader sales or installed-base data.
