FSR 4 has reached some Vulkan games through a community workaround—not through native Vulkan support from AMD. Reports published in February 2026 described OptiScaler preview 0.9.0-pre10 bridging Vulkan games to a DirectX 12 path so the FSR 4 backend could run. That distinction matters: AMD’s documented FSR 4 route remains tied to supported Radeon hardware and DirectX 12 integrations.

What changed—and what did not

In February 2026, reporting identified OptiScaler 0.9.0-pre10 as a way to use FSR 4 in some Vulkan-only games. It was a community tool in preview, not an AMD release. The reported changelog described the feature as “Added Vulkan w/Dx12 support – FSR4 VK w/Dx12, FSR 2.1 VK w/Dx12.” TechSpot’s report called it the first publicly available method for FSR 4 in Vulkan-only games at the time; the preview had not yet appeared in OptiScaler’s official GitHub releases.

VideoCardz characterized the approach as Vulkan-to-DirectX 12 interop: the game’s Vulkan upscaler interface is bridged, while FSR 4 runs through a DX12 backend. That is an indirect compatibility route, not proof of native Vulkan support in AMD’s FSR 4 pipeline. It may bring overhead or title-specific problems, and the result should not be assumed to work in every Vulkan game. VideoCardz explains the reported mechanism and its caveats.

AMD’s documented FSR 4 route

AMD’s FSR 4 launch documentation specifies Radeon RX 9000 Series and newer, Windows 10 or 11, and DirectX 12. The page documents FSR 4 v4.0.2; that is the version shown there, not a claim that it is the newest available now. Its supported software-upgrade route applies to eligible games that already integrate FSR 3.1 or later, subject to AMD’s conditions. AMD’s FSR 4 launch documentation describes the compatibility requirements.

AMD’s current FSR page uses “Redstone” for the broader suite and says ML-based FSR Upscaling is available on RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. Features and game availability depend on the integration and supported products. These broader, evolving Redstone statements should not be confused with the narrower RX 9000-and-DirectX-12 launch requirements for FSR 4. AMD’s current FSR overview describes the broader suite.

AMD describes two ways to enable its features: integration by the game, or AMD Software support for titles with FSR 3.1 or higher integration. For ML-based frame generation, the current page specifies FSR 3.1.4 or later with frame generation. It does not document an AMD driver-upgrade path for Vulkan. VideoCardz reported that AMD guidance in September 2025 limited the driver upgrade feature to DirectX 12 games with a signed FSR 3.1 DLL and said Vulkan FSR 3.1 titles were incompatible. Treat that API-specific detail as the outlet’s account of AMD guidance, not as a new direct statement from AMD.

Official support and the OptiScaler workaround compared

Question AMD’s documented route OptiScaler preview route
API DirectX 12 in the FSR 4 launch requirements; no official Vulkan driver-upgrade route is documented. Reported Vulkan-to-DX12 bridge; not native FSR 4 Vulkan support.
Hardware Launch documentation specifies Radeon RX 9000 Series and newer. Current Redstone information separately lists ML-based upscaling on RX 7000 and RX 9000. Title- and build-specific. Reports included an RX 6800 XT demonstration using an INT8 build, which is not an officially supported older-card route.
Game requirement Native game integration, or eligible FSR 3.1-or-later integration for AMD Software upgrades; frame-generation upgrading has the additional 3.1.4 requirement. Compatibility depends on the game, OptiScaler build, and its Vulkan/DX12 handling; the examples are not a universal compatibility list.
Delivery and stability AMD-supported features and integrations, subject to the stated product and game conditions. A preview build reported outside the official GitHub release channel at the time; per-game issues and overhead are plausible.
Online play Follow the game’s rules and AMD’s supported setup. OptiScaler documentation was reported to warn against online use because of anti-cheat risk.

Games named in the reports

Coverage named Doom Eternal, Doom: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and No Man’s Sky as examples. These reports do not establish that every Vulkan game works, or that every named title works with every OptiScaler build, GPU, or configuration.

AMD separately said its 2025 FSR 4 Technical Preview expanded the set of titles that could be upgraded from FSR 3.1 to over 60 on Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards. That is AMD’s figure for the preview’s eligible titles—not a count of Vulkan games supported by OptiScaler. The release notes invite users to “provide feedback through the AMD Bug Report Tool.” AMD’s FSR Technical Preview release notes provide that context.

Should you try it?

For a supported RX 9000 system and a game that meets AMD’s integration requirements, AMD’s documented route is the clearer choice. OptiScaler may interest experienced users willing to troubleshoot a preview workaround in a specific single-player title, but it is not a substitute for official AMD Vulkan support.

  • Check the current OptiScaler project documentation and release location before downloading; the build discussed in February 2026 was a preview not then listed in the official GitHub release channel.
  • Follow the current game-specific instructions. Reports described copying files into a game folder and, in some cases, changing batch scripts; the exact steps can differ by title and build.
  • Do not use a modded upscaler in online play unless the game’s current policy explicitly permits it. Anti-cheat systems can make unofficial file changes a serious account-risk decision.
  • Keep expectations title-specific: a demonstration or a handful of named games does not promise compatibility, consistent performance, or image quality for your setup.
