AMD announced its Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series on March 8, 2022. The workstation family uses Zen 3 cores, spans 12 to 64 cores, and gives every model 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, support for up to 2 TB of ECC memory, and a 280 W stated TDP. The flagship Threadripper PRO 5995WX has 64 cores and 128 threads. This is a historical launch, not AMD’s current Threadripper generation; AMD later announced the Zen 5-based Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series in 2025.

What AMD announced

The five-processor Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series was designed for professional workstations rather than mainstream desktop PCs. AMD’s announcement paired Zen 3 performance and efficiency improvements with higher frequencies, an enhanced L3-cache design, and AMD PRO enterprise features for security, manageability and platform scalability.

AMD identified the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 as the first workstation to launch with all five processors. Availability, pricing and configurations can vary by system builder and region.

AMD defines boost as the maximum frequency a single core can reach during a bursty single-threaded workload. Cooling, motherboard design, BIOS, drivers and operating-system updates can change the result. Base frequency is an approximate clock for a typical workload at the processor’s standard TDP. TDP is a thermal-design value, not a direct measurement of electrical power consumption.

How the five models differ

Threadripper PRO 5995WX

The 5995WX is the range-topping option, with 64 cores, 128 threads and 288 MB of total cache. It is the model aimed most directly at heavily parallel workloads such as CPU rendering, large simulations and compiling substantial codebases.

Threadripper PRO 5975WX

The 5975WX halves the flagship’s core count to 32 cores and 64 threads while retaining a 4.5 GHz maximum boost and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes. Its 3.6 GHz base clock and 144 MB cache suit mixed professional workloads that need substantial parallel capacity without the 5995WX’s core count.

Threadripper PRO 5965WX

The 5965WX provides 24 cores and 48 threads, a 3.8 GHz base clock, up to 4.5 GHz boost and 140 MB cache. It occupies the middle of the family for applications that scale across many threads but do not justify a 32- or 64-core configuration.

Threadripper PRO 5955WX

The 5955WX has 16 cores and 32 threads, a 4.0 GHz base clock and 72 MB cache. Its higher listed base frequency favors workloads that mix responsive, lightly threaded work with sustained professional processing.

Threadripper PRO 5945WX

The 5945WX is the entry point, with 12 cores and 24 threads, a 4.1 GHz base clock and 70 MB cache. It retains the platform’s 128 PCIe lanes, ECC-memory support and 280 W TDP designation.

Workloads AMD targeted

  • 8K video rendering and editing
  • Complex simulation and design projects
  • Rapid software development and compilation
  • Professional visualization and other workstation workloads that can use many CPU threads

Core count is not the only performance determinant. Application scaling, memory capacity, storage, graphics hardware, cooling and the complete workstation configuration affect real results.

Platform and AMD PRO features

128 PCIe 4.0 lanes

AMD listed 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes for every 5000 WX model. That bandwidth can support workstation configurations with multiple graphics cards, high-speed storage and other expansion devices, although the actual slot layout and lane allocation depend on the workstation or motherboard.

ECC memory up to 2 TB

AMD stated support for up to 2 TB of ECC UDIMM, RDIMM or LRDIMM memory across the lineup. A system must be designed with the appropriate memory type and capacity; the processor specification alone does not guarantee that every workstation configuration reaches the ceiling.

Security and manageability

  • Memory Guard: AMD describes this as encryption intended to protect memory from physical attacks.
  • Secure Processor: AMD says it protects sensitive data and validates code before execution.
  • Shadow Stack: AMD describes this hardware feature as helping mitigate a common class of malware attack.

These are AMD’s feature descriptions, not an independent security assessment.

What AMD claimed about performance

In its launch material, AMD claimed up to double the performance of competing single-socket solutions, up to 95% higher performance than workstations using two competing server processors, up to 43% higher graphics performance, up to 2.2 times the storage performance, and up to 67% lower power per core. AMD tied these figures to company laboratory testing conducted or current as of January 31, 2022, with specific benchmarks and reference configurations, and stated that results may vary.

Those numbers should therefore be read as attributed launch claims, not universal guarantees. A purchasing decision should use benchmark results for the exact application, memory layout, graphics cards, storage and workstation configuration under consideration.

AMD’s release also reproduced testimonials from VFX Supervisor Paul Lambert of Dune, who reported a 2X improvement in CPU render times, and Industrial Light & Magic StageCraft Principal Engineer and Architect Nick Rasmussen, who called the processors the best performing they had tested. These are attributed user statements rather than independently reproducible benchmarks.

Is Threadripper PRO 5000 still current?

No. The 5000 WX-Series announcement belongs to 2022 and is based on Zen 3. AMD announced a Zen 5-based Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series in 2025, so the 5000 family should be evaluated as an older workstation platform. It can still be relevant when a configured system meets a workload and budget requirement, but current stock, pricing, support and performance must be checked for the specific workstation.

What to check before buying a 5995WX or another 5000 WX chip

  1. Confirm that the complete workstation supports the chosen Threadripper PRO model and its required firmware.
  2. Check the memory type, ECC support and maximum capacity offered in that configuration.
  3. Verify PCIe slot layout and lane allocation for graphics cards, storage and expansion hardware.
  4. Match core count to measured application scaling rather than assuming the highest-core model is fastest for every task.
  5. Check current price, stock, warranty and service terms; the launch announcement does not establish current retail listings or availability.

The Bottom Line

AMD’s Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series brought Zen 3 to professional workstations in 2022. The 5995WX leads with 64 cores and 128 threads, while all five models share 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, up to 2 TB of stated ECC-memory support and a 280 W TDP. AMD’s performance figures are configuration-specific launch claims, and the family is now a previous-generation platform rather than AMD’s newest workstation CPU line.
