AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.5.2 is an official May 2022 driver release, identified in AMD’s release notes as driver version 22.10.17.01 and Windows Driver Store version 30.0.21017.1000. Its “DX11 Finewine” nickname is community shorthand, not AMD branding. AMD said it delivered up to 8% higher performance in selected DirectX 11 games on an RX 6950 XT versus 22.5.1; that result does not promise the same gain on other cards or games. In 2026, treat 22.5.2 as a targeted comparison or compatibility option, not a default recommendation for every Radeon system.

What AMD Adrenalin 22.5.2 identifies

The labels refer to different parts of the same release:

Label Meaning
Adrenalin Edition 22.5.2 AMD’s public software and package release label.
22.10.17.01 Driver version in AMD’s release notes.
30.0.21017.1000 Windows Driver Store version.
23/05/22 A date appearing in the supplied community-style title; it is not the package version. A contemporaneous AnandTech forum listing opened May 24, 2022.
“DX11 Finewine Drivers” An informal nickname for the release’s DirectX 11 performance focus, not an AMD feature, certification, or mode.

AMD’s 22.5.2 release notes are the authoritative source for the package’s version details and supported products.

Why it became known as a DX11 “Finewine” driver

AMD highlighted DirectX 11 optimizations for Radeon RX 6000-series graphics. AMD Performance Labs claimed up to 8% higher performance on an RX 6950 XT compared with Adrenalin 22.5.1. The company tested on April 26, 2022, using a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32 GB DDR4, and Windows 10 Pro. Its results covered ten selected games: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Far Cry 6, Farming Simulator 22, Grand Theft Auto V, A Total War Saga: Troy, Total War: Warhammer III, Watch Dogs Legion, Apex Legends, Overwatch, and Valorant.

  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

AMD used different resolutions and quality presets across those games, so “up to 8%” is a maximum from a selected test set, not an average or a result every user should expect. It is not independent lab validation. The claim concerns DX11 workloads and an RX 6950 XT; it does not establish the same uplift for DX12 or Vulkan games, older Radeon generations, or integrated graphics. A driver-side optimization can matter more in CPU-limited situations than when the GPU is already the bottleneck. The nickname captures the idea of improved performance in older games or APIs; it does not mean every supported Radeon “aged” into the same result.

Other changes in the release

  • Added support for Sniper Elite 5 and the ray-tracing update for Hitman 3.
  • Added additional Vulkan extensions.
  • Expanded Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) support to AMD Ryzen 6000-series processors with integrated graphics and introduced an RSR Sharpen Effect slider.
  • Added AMD Privacy View, an eye-tracking-based privacy feature developed with Eyeware.

Supported Radeon hardware and Windows versions

Desktop Radeon graphics

AMD’s release-era supported-product list covers Radeon RX 6900, 6800, 6700, 6600, 6500, and 6400 series; RX 5700, 5600, 5500, and 5300 series; Radeon VII; Radeon RX Vega series; Radeon Pro Duo; Radeon RX 500/500X series; and Radeon RX 400 series. The current presentation of the old AMD page also shows an RX 7650 GRE entry. Because that product is later than this 2022 release, its appearance in the current page data is not evidence that 22.5.2 was originally designed for it.

AMD also lists desktop and mobile Ryzen/Athlon processors with integrated Radeon graphics. For laptops and all-in-one systems, AMD cautions that the computer manufacturer’s driver may be preferable because it can include device-specific customization and validation.

Operating-system baseline

The release notes specify Windows 11 version 21H2 and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later. Those are the package’s stated 2022 support baselines, not a guarantee that 22.5.2 is optimized for every later Windows build. AMD says installation requires administrator rights and that the package is not intended for Radeon products running in Apple Boot Camp. Known issues to consider

AMD listed the following issues for 22.5.2. The practical steps below are troubleshooting options, not a claim that they resolve every affected system.

Issue AMD listed Practical response
Performance drop in Fortnite with Multithreaded Rendering and DX11 on some AMD graphics products, including RX 6900 XT. For diagnosis, compare with Multithreaded Rendering disabled, then test a different driver if the drop persists.
Stuttering in Call of Duty: Warzone on Caldera with some AMD graphics products. Compare the affected map with other gameplay and driver versions before attributing stutter to the GPU hardware.
Higher-than-expected CPU usage when Instant Replay is enabled on some RX 6900 XT systems. Disable Instant Replay while testing performance.
Radeon performance metrics may remain at 100% GPU utilization after closing games on some Radeon 570 systems. Check whether the reading persists outside the overlay or logging tool; do not treat the metric alone as proof of sustained load.
Black flicker during simultaneous video playback and gameplay on some RX 6700 XT configurations. Test with video playback stopped and, if needed, compare against another driver.
RSR at 2560×1600 may cause a system hang. AMD’s temporary workaround was to set Display Scaling Mode to Full Panel.
Enhanced Sync may cause black screens. AMD recommended temporarily disabling Enhanced Sync for affected users.
Performance metrics and logging may report incorrect, unusually high memory-clock values. Verify clocks with a separate, reliable method before using the displayed value to diagnose performance.

All issues above are from AMD’s 22.5.2 release notes.

Should you install 22.5.2 in 2026?

RX 6000 desktop owners testing a DX11 game

It may be worth a controlled comparison if you have a specific DX11 game or performance issue and can revert safely. Compare against your current known-good driver with the same game version, API, resolution, graphics settings, and background processes. Let shader compilation or cache rebuilding finish before comparing frame rates. A single game-specific result is more useful than assuming the headline gain transfers across your library.

Most users seeking routine support

Use AMD’s current driver selection for your product rather than choosing a four-year-old package by reputation. Later releases may include game support, Windows compatibility work, or fixes that 22.5.2 predates. AMD’s driver portal is the starting point for current Windows 10/11 drivers and product-specific support.

Laptop and all-in-one owners

Check the computer maker’s support page first, especially if the system relies on hybrid graphics, manufacturer-specific power controls, display switching, or customized sleep and monitor behavior. A generic AMD package may not preserve all of those system-specific behaviors.

Owners of legacy GPUs

Do not assume 22.5.2 is the right final driver for an older product merely because it appears in a broad historical list. AMD’s legacy driver guidance explains that some products no longer receive further releases; use the product’s support page to identify the applicable driver. For example, AMD has a specific Radeon R9 390 support page.

Benchmarking or maintaining an archive

The release can be useful for historical comparisons or a particular known-good configuration. Obtain it from AMD’s official support infrastructure or a verified local archive, and do not mistake its benchmark interest for a general 2026 recommendation.

Install, verify, and recover safely

Before installation

  1. Record the exact GPU model, current Adrenalin version, and Windows build.
  2. Create a restore point or otherwise preserve a known-good recovery route.
  3. Get the package through AMD’s official driver portal or use a verified local archive. The release notes identify the historical package.
  4. If you use a laptop or all-in-one, check the manufacturer’s driver page before replacing its customized driver.

Install and validate

  1. Run the installer with administrator privileges. Use a normal upgrade unless there is a reason to clear old driver state; a clean installation is not automatically necessary.
  2. Change as few graphics settings as possible during the comparison, and reboot if prompted.
  3. Confirm Adrenalin reports 22.5.2 and that the driver version is 22.10.17.01 in AMD Software or Windows Device Manager.
  4. Check that the expected GPU is detected and test display output, FreeSync, game profiles, recording, overlay, and power-management behavior.
  5. Benchmark only after shader compilation or game-cache rebuilding has completed. Keep the game version, settings, resolution, graphics API, and background processes consistent.

If something goes wrong

  1. First disable recently enabled features—particularly Enhanced Sync, Instant Replay, RSR, or overlay functions—and retest with default settings after a reboot.
  2. If the problem began immediately after the driver change, roll back to the previous known-good driver.
  3. If repeated upgrades have left conflicting or corrupted driver state, follow AMD’s official uninstall or cleanup guidance rather than adding a third-party driver updater.
  4. On a laptop, reinstall the OEM driver if display switching, sleep/wake, brightness controls, or external-monitor behavior fails.
  5. Before calling a frame-rate change a driver regression, control for game updates, per-game settings, and completed shader compilation.

AMD’s driver installation guidance advises users generally to keep an existing driver unless there is a specific reason to upgrade or downgrade.
