Common shareholders hold a residual claim and face share-price volatility and dilution; debt investors have contractual claims whose payment, priority, maturity and recovery depend on the specific issue. At June 30, 2026, AMC reported $3,914.2 million of corporate borrowings by principal, with $3,202.8 million scheduled to mature in 2029. Those figures describe the company’s position at that date—not live market conditions or a prediction of default.
Is AMC stock riskier than AMC bonds?
It depends on what “riskier” means and which debt security is being compared. AMC common stock has no contractual maturity or promised principal repayment. Its value is residual: common shareholders share in assets available to common holders only after any preferred-stock claims are paid, according to AMC’s capital-stock description, which describes the position as of December 31, 2025. AMC’s capital-stock description
Debt, by contrast, carries issue-specific contractual payment terms and may rank ahead of common equity. That can make a particular note’s claim structurally stronger than a share in a restructuring, but it does not ensure timely payment or a full recovery. The actual outcome depends on the instrument’s priority, collateral, guarantees, covenants and the value available to satisfy claims. AMC has multiple borrowings, so “AMC bonds” are not one interchangeable investment.
| Risk or feature | AMC common stock | AMC debt |
|---|---|---|
| Claim on assets | Residual claim after higher-ranking claims, including any preferred-stock claims. | Contractual claim governed by the specific instrument and applicable priority and security terms. |
| Return and timing | No fixed coupon or contractual principal repayment date. | Coupon, payment form and maturity depend on the issue; some debt may have exchangeability or payment-in-kind features. |
| Issuer-specific downside | Price declines, volatility, dilution and loss in a restructuring or liquidation. | Missed or delayed payments, refinancing or default risk, price declines before maturity and uncertain recovery. |
| Potential dilution | New share issuance can reduce existing holders’ ownership percentage. | Exchangeable notes may convert into shares, potentially diluting equity while changing the debt claim. |
This comparison is about the kinds of risks, not a universal safety ranking or personal investment recommendation. A debt security can have less exposure to residual-claim risk than common stock and still lose value or suffer a payment shortfall.

How much debt does AMC have, and when is it due?
AMC reported $3,914.2 million of corporate borrowing principal at June 30, 2026; the company’s carrying value for debt is not the same as principal. Its maturity schedule was concentrated in 2029:
| Scheduled period | Principal due (millions) |
|---|---|
| Six months ending December 31, 2026 | $137.5 |
| 2027 | $23.9 |
| 2028 | $23.7 |
| 2029 | $3,202.8 |
| 2030 | $120.4 |
| 2031 | $405.9 |
The schedule makes refinancing capacity and the company’s ability to generate cash relevant to debt risk, especially around the large 2029 amount. A maturity date is not itself proof that repayment will fail: a company may repay, refinance, amend or otherwise address debt, subject to available resources and the terms of its agreements. But an extension can move the deadline without resolving whether the business will generate enough cash to meet its obligations. AMC’s February 9, 2026 prospectus supplement warns that extensions might not provide enough time for attendance and revenue to rise enough to generate positive operating cash flow and overcome liquidity concerns.
What do AMC’s liquidity and cash-flow figures show?
At June 30, 2026, AMC reported $778.4 million in cash and cash equivalents. It separately reported a $901.0 million working-capital deficit excluding restricted cash. The company said working capital included operating lease liabilities and deferred revenues, so the deficit should not be read as a simple measure of cash immediately due or as an equivalent amount of funded debt.
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, AMC reported $106.9 million of net cash provided by operating activities; in the corresponding six-month period of 2025, it used $231.6 million. AMC attributed much of the year-over-year improvement to attendance, ticket prices, food-and-beverage spending per patron, advertising and working-capital timing. The period’s positive operating cash flow is relevant evidence, but it does not guarantee that future periods will produce the same result or that cash will be sufficient for future maturities. These figures and explanations are from AMC’s Form 10-Q for the six months ended June 30, 2026.
What makes AMC stock risky?
Volatility can be severe
AMC reported that its NYSE intraday share price during 2026 through the dates specified in its filing ranged from $0.93 on March 27 to $2.96 on June 22. That historical range is not a live quote or a measure of the price range after those dates. The company itself cautioned in its 2026 Form 10-Q that the market prices and trading volume of its common shares have experienced, and may continue to experience, extreme volatility.
Issuance can dilute existing holders
AMC disclosed that it may issue common shares for liquidity, debt repayment or refinancing, and other purposes, and that future issuances may dilute existing stockholders. Its reported count was 892,604,638 common shares outstanding as of July 22, 2026; that dated count may have changed since then. A larger share count can reduce each existing holder’s percentage ownership, while the market price may also respond to the reasons for issuance and the terms of any transaction. AMC’s filing says such events may significantly dilute current holders, reduce earnings per share or adversely affect the share price.

Shareholders are last in the capital structure
If AMC entered restructuring or liquidation, common stock’s residual status means shareholders would receive value only if assets remain available after superior claims are addressed. The result would depend on the company’s assets and liabilities and the restructuring or liquidation outcome; the available filing evidence does not establish that a particular outcome is certain.
What makes AMC debt risky?
Coupon rates and payment terms vary by issue
At June 30, 2026, AMC reported a 10.639% rate on $1,984.2 million principal of Muvico Term Loans. The rate can move with reference rates and leverage terms. For $903.4 million principal of New 2029 Notes, the reported rate ranged from 11.5% to 15.0%, with 15.0% then in effect based on the leverage ratio. These are company-reported terms at that date, not a statement of current secondary-market yield or the return available to a new buyer. Payment form and other terms also matter: some debt may have exchangeability or payment-in-kind features.
Refinancing and repayment are not assured
Debt investors depend on AMC meeting the particular instrument’s payment schedule or successfully addressing obligations when due. A company can face refinancing difficulty even when a security pays a high stated rate; a coupon compensates under its contract but does not remove the possibility of default or an incomplete recovery. Debt prices can also fall before maturity, and interest-rate changes can affect market value, particularly for debt with longer remaining terms or rates that do not reset.

Priority and collateral must be checked security by security
Do not infer that every AMC note has the same seniority, collateral, guarantors or covenant protection. A secured label alone does not establish what a holder would recover: the relevant collateral, competing claims and value available in a distress scenario matter. An unsecured instrument likewise cannot be evaluated from its coupon alone. The company’s aggregate borrowing figure does not answer the priority or recovery question for an individual security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to AMC shareholders if the company restructures?
Common stock may be diluted, have its rights changed, or lose most or all of its value in a restructuring, depending on the plan and the value left after higher-priority claims. The residual position means shareholders do not have a contractual claim to repayment ahead of creditors. It would be inaccurate to say that a restructuring necessarily cancels all shares or guarantees a particular recovery; those outcomes depend on the proceeding and the company’s capital structure at that time.
Debt holders also are not assured full repayment. Their position depends on the precise issue’s priority, security and terms, as well as available value and the claims ahead of or alongside it. “Bondholders come before shareholders” is a useful starting point, not enough information to estimate a recovery.

How should a retail investor compare a particular AMC security?
Start with the exact security rather than the label “AMC bonds.” An investor can use AMC’s filings to understand issuer-reported financial information, but should obtain the instrument’s current terms and market data separately. The filing figures here stop at June 30, 2026 for company financials, with the share count dated July 22, 2026; they do not establish October 2026 share prices, note prices, yields, ratings or transaction costs.
- Identify the security. Confirm the exact issue or CUSIP, legal issuer, guarantors and applicable offering documents. Do not assume two AMC debt instruments share the same protections.
- Read the debt terms. Check seniority, collateral, covenants, coupon, payment-in-kind or cash-toggle provisions, maturity, calls, exchange or conversion rights, and any conditions that change the rate or payment.
- Check the current price and yield. A stated coupon is not the same as yield at the price a buyer pays. Consider maturity, call or exchange provisions and transaction costs when interpreting quoted yield.
- Assess the issuer’s capacity to pay. Review cash available, operating cash flow, upcoming maturities, access to refinancing and risks to attendance and revenue in later filings. Compare later disclosures with the historical figures above rather than treating them as current.
- For stock, track share count and issuance risk. Review the latest shares outstanding, authorized issuance capacity, any announced issuance or exchangeable debt, liquidity and operating cash flow, and the company’s volatility disclosures.
- Match the security to your loss tolerance and time horizon. Debt’s contractual claim does not make its market price stable or guarantee repayment; stock has no maturity but remains exposed to dilution and residual losses.
AMC’s issuer-authored filings establish its reported figures and disclosed risks, not an independent probability of default or a valuation of any note’s recovery. Current secondary-market prices, yields and each instrument’s precise rank must be verified from current, security-specific information before drawing a comparison.
