Amazon’s current U.S. guidance says non-Prime customers can receive free delivery when an order totals at least $35. The items must be eligible and fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. Amazon says qualifying delivery can take five to eight days, so this option is free but generally slower than Prime delivery.
What Amazon’s $35 minimum means
The $35 requirement applies per order, not as a monthly spending target. Reaching the subtotal does not automatically make every item eligible: check each product page and the cart for Amazon fulfillment, Amazon shipping and free-delivery eligibility.

- Region: Amazon’s current explainer describes U.S. terms.
- Minimum: At least $35 in one qualifying order.
- Fulfillment: The item must be fulfilled and shipped by Amazon.
- Speed: Amazon estimates five to eight days for eligible free delivery.
Taxes, marketplace eligibility and the exact delivery promise can affect what appears at checkout. The checkout estimate is the final authority for a particular order.
How to get free delivery without Prime
- Add items you genuinely intend to buy to your cart.
- Open the product detail pages and confirm that Amazon is the seller or that the item is fulfilled and shipped by Amazon, with free-shipping eligibility shown.
- Review the cart subtotal and remove ineligible items from the calculation if Amazon does not count them toward the minimum.
- When the qualifying subtotal reaches $35, select the free-delivery option at checkout and confirm the promised arrival window.
Consolidating planned purchases can help you reach the threshold, but buying unwanted products solely to cross it can cost more than paying any applicable shipping charge.

Free non-Prime delivery versus Prime
Amazon’s current U.S. explainer lists Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Prime is a recurring membership; the $35 option is an order-by-order qualification. Which is cheaper depends on how often you order, how many purchases qualify, and whether you need faster delivery.
| Factor | Non-Prime order meeting $35 | Prime membership |
|---|---|---|
| Cost basis | No membership fee; order must meet the $35 qualifying minimum. | $14.99 monthly or $139 annually in the U.S., according to Amazon’s March 11, 2025 explainer. |
| Delivery timing | Amazon says eligible free delivery can take five to eight days. | Prime provides the membership’s advertised delivery benefits; the exact speed depends on item and location. |
| Item restrictions | Items must meet Amazon’s fulfillment, shipping and eligibility conditions. | Prime eligibility is shown on individual listings and is not universal across the store. |
| Best fit | Infrequent shoppers who can combine planned purchases and wait several days. | Frequent shoppers or customers who value faster delivery and other Prime benefits. |
| Below the minimum | A universally applicable shipping charge is not stated in Amazon’s current guidance; checkout shows the charge for your order. | Prime can avoid eligible delivery charges without requiring a $35 subtotal, subject to item and location eligibility. |
Why the minimum changed from $25
On August 28, 2023, TechCrunch reported that Amazon was testing a $35 minimum for non-Prime customers in some regions, up from $25. Amazon said customers within the same ZIP-code-grouped region would see the same threshold. Associated Press reporting described the same geographic variation: some customers saw $35 while others still saw $25.

An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch, “We continually evaluate our offerings and make adjustments based on those assessments,” and, “We’re currently testing a $35 minimum for non-Prime customers to qualify for free shipping.” Those statements described the 2023 test, not a claim that every U.S. customer changed at once.
Amazon’s official explainer, published March 11, 2025, is the relevant source for the current U.S. guidance: $35 per order, qualifying Amazon fulfillment and shipping, and a five-to-eight-day delivery estimate. The old $25 figure should therefore be treated as historical context rather than today’s general rule.

How to decide whether Prime is worthwhile
Count your realistic orders
Estimate how many Amazon orders you place in a typical month and how often they are below $35. A customer who orders only occasionally and can combine purchases may get little value from a recurring membership.
Price delivery speed
If a five-to-eight-day window works for routine purchases, the non-Prime minimum may be sufficient. Urgent household, work or travel needs make the Prime delivery benefit more valuable.
Rank #4
- Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box
- Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
Include benefits you actually use
Compare the membership price with the delivery convenience and any other Prime benefits you personally use. Do not count benefits that are irrelevant to your household.

Common pitfalls
- Assuming every listing counts: Marketplace and non-Amazon-fulfilled items may not qualify.
- Expecting Prime speed: Free non-Prime delivery can take five to eight days.
- Using the 2023 test as the current rule: The $25-to-$35 rollout varied by region; Amazon’s current U.S. explainer states $35.
- Adding filler products: Reaching $35 is not a saving if the extra item was unnecessary.
- Ignoring checkout: Eligibility, shipping fees and arrival dates are order-specific and can change.
