Amazon’s October 16, 2024 Kindle refresh introduced its first color Kindle, redesigned the Scribe, updated the Paperwhite and gave its entry Kindle a Matcha color option. The lineup’s key difference is what each model is built to do: Colorsoft adds color, Scribe adds handwriting, Paperwhite is the larger waterproof reader, and the entry Kindle prioritizes a light, compact design. The specifications and performance figures below are Amazon’s published claims, not independent test results.
What Amazon launched in October 2024
Amazon announced four core devices: Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, Kindle Scribe, Kindle Paperwhite and the entry Kindle. It also announced Kids versions of the entry Kindle and Paperwhite; those are separate variants rather than additional core models. The company’s October 16, 2024 announcement describes the features and launch specifications.
| Model | What it is for | Notable announced details |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition | Color covers, images, illustrations and color highlighting | Amazon’s first color Kindle; waterproof, wireless charging and up to eight weeks of battery life claimed |
| Kindle Scribe | Reading with handwriting, margin notes and digital notebooks | 300 ppi screen, paper-like texture and Active Canvas; AI notebook summaries announced |
| Kindle Paperwhite | A larger waterproof screen for general reading | 7-inch display, 16 GB storage and up to three months of battery life claimed |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition | Paperwhite features with expanded storage and convenience options | 32 GB storage, optional wireless charging and auto-adjusting front light |
| Entry Kindle | A lighter, more compact black-and-white reader | 158 g, 300 ppi display, 16 GB storage and new Matcha color |
What is different about Kindle Colorsoft?
Colorsoft is the headline change: Amazon called it the first color Kindle. Color is intended for browsing covers and viewing photos or illustrations in books, as well as making searchable color highlights. Amazon also cites cookbooks, travel guides, comics and graphic novels as uses for color in its Colorsoft announcement.
Amazon says the display uses an oxide backplane, custom waveforms and a redesigned light guide. Those are manufacturer descriptions; the announcement does not provide independent measurements of color accuracy, contrast or display performance. The device is waterproof, supports wireless charging and is rated for up to eight weeks of battery life by Amazon.

How the 2024 Kindle Scribe changed
The redesigned Scribe adds white borders and a textured screen Amazon describes as paper-like. Its display is specified at 300 ppi. The distinction from the other models is writing: Amazon presented Active Canvas for writing directly in a book, with text flowing around a note, alongside margin notes and an AI-powered notebook feature that summarizes notes into bullet points.
Feature timing matters. In the October 2024 launch announcement, Amazon described writing in a side panel as coming soon. A later Amazon family overview describes margin-note functions. The launch announcement therefore should not be read as proof that every announced writing feature was available on launch day.

What changed on Kindle Paperwhite?
The 2024 Paperwhite moved to a 7-inch display, and Amazon said page turns were 25% faster than on the prior generation. The company also called it the thinnest Paperwhite to date and estimated up to three months of battery life. Both the speed comparison and battery figure are Amazon claims, not independently measured results in the launch materials. The Paperwhite is waterproof and has 16 GB of storage.
The Signature Edition raises storage to 32 GB and adds wireless charging and an auto-adjusting front light. The standard Paperwhite colors announced were Raspberry, Jade and Black; Signature Edition colors were Metallic Raspberry, Metallic Jade and Metallic Black.

What does the entry Kindle offer?
The refreshed entry Kindle weighs 158 g and has a 300 ppi glare-free display, 16 GB storage, a brighter front light and faster page turns, according to Amazon. Matcha is its new color. It is the lineup’s compact black-and-white option rather than a color-screen alternative.
Which 2024 Kindle suits each reader?
- Choose Colorsoft if: seeing color in covers, illustrations, comics or other image-heavy books is the priority. Amazon’s claims do not establish how its color display compares with other display technologies in independent testing.
- Choose Scribe if: you want to write in books, annotate margins or keep notebook pages alongside reading.
- Choose Paperwhite if: you want a larger waterproof screen for reading. The Signature Edition adds 32 GB storage, wireless charging and an auto-adjusting front light.
- Choose the entry Kindle if: low weight and a straightforward black-and-white reading device matter more than handwriting, waterproofing or color.
These are differences in intended use, not a claim that one model is best for everyone. In contemporaneous coverage, Axios reported on October 17, 2024 that the first color Kindle arrived alongside refreshed devices, with Scribe remaining black-and-white.

What Amazon’s launch claims do—and don’t—establish
The feature descriptions, storage capacities, weight and battery estimates in this article come from Amazon. Amazon said the Paperwhite had 25% faster page turns, estimated up to three months of Paperwhite battery life and up to eight weeks for Colorsoft. These are not independent comparative tests or guarantees of an individual reader’s results.
Amazon vice president of Devices Kevin Keith said in the October 2024 release that Kindle sales the prior year hit a decade high, with most purchases going to first-time Kindle device owners. The release provides no numeric sales series or independent validation for that statement.
Kindle Kids versions
Alongside the core devices, Amazon announced Kids versions of the entry Kindle and Paperwhite with themed covers. The 2024 release said they included a two-year worry-free guarantee and six months of Amazon Kids+. Those launch details describe the announced bundles; check current listings for present terms and availability.
