There is no defensible single “best” Amazon rainforest charity. The right choice depends on what you want your donation to accomplish. Rainforest Trust is the clearest fit if you prioritize protected-area grantmaking and large, documented habitat totals. Rainforest Foundation US is better suited to donors who see Indigenous land rights, legal titling and territorial governance as the foundation of conservation. Amazon Conservation Association, Amazon Watch and Amazon Conservation Team offer more specialized options in field conservation, advocacy and Indigenous-led partnerships.
The available reports do not provide a shared, independently verified measure of the marginal forest, carbon or community benefit produced by one additional dollar. That makes a universal cost-effectiveness ranking impossible. Compare the organizations by intervention, geography, decision-making power, type of result reported and financial disclosure instead.
What “most impact” can mean in rainforest giving
“Impact” is not one interchangeable unit. A charity may buy or help establish a protected area, secure a community’s legal title, train local monitors, challenge an extractive project or strengthen an Indigenous organization. Those activities can all matter for forest protection, but hectares, legal titles, advocacy wins and governance capacity cannot be added together as if they were the same output.

Rainforest Trust: strongest documented protected-area scale
Rainforest Trust says its model is conservation-project grantmaking and protected-area creation. Its 2024 impact update reports that it safeguarded 8,416,483 acres of critical habitat and habitat for 935 threatened species during 2024. The same update says the organization has reached 50 million acres protected to date. These are global figures; they should not be presented as acres in the Amazon.
Its 2024 short-year report records $42.2 million in new projects approved during the first six months of 2024. Twenty-three of those projects were expected to protect 11.8 million acres. Because the report describes expected protection, that number is a project forecast rather than a completed, independently comparable outcome.
Financial disclosures
Rainforest Trust’s financial page links audits, Form 990 filings, board minutes and annual reports. It states: As a result, 100% of your donation is allocated to conservation projects.
The same short-year report lists 91.2% program expense and a fundraising cost of $0.059 per dollar raised for that reporting period.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The 100% statement describes allocation to conservation projects, while the 91.2% figure is an expense ratio calculated under the organization’s reporting period and accounting classifications. Neither number tells you how much additional forest a marginal donation protects. Choose Rainforest Trust when the protected-area mechanism and transparent acreage reporting are more important to you than an Amazon-only mandate.
Rainforest Foundation US: land rights and governance as conservation
Rainforest Foundation US (RFUS) works with Indigenous partners on legal land titling, territorial monitoring and governance. Its 2025 report says partners in Peru worked across 990,297 acres and secured legal titles for 67,762 acres. It separately reports monitoring and protection across 11.7 million acres in Guyana, 1.1 million acres in Panama and 4 million acres in Brazil.
Those categories must remain separate. “Worked across” indicates the area covered by activities; “legally titled” refers to a formal tenure result; and “monitoring and protection” describes ongoing stewardship or surveillance. None is directly equivalent to Rainforest Trust’s protected-area totals.

RFUS reports 2025 expenses of $9,291,415 for programs, $838,280 for fundraising and $1,124,548 for administration. That is an expense mix of 83% programs, 7% fundraising and 10% administration. It is an accounting ratio, not a direct measure of forest saved or community benefit per dollar.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
RFUS is the more natural choice if you believe communities need secure legal rights and decision-making authority to defend forests over the long term. Ask how a general donation is allocated among titling, monitoring, legal support and organizational strengthening if you need a narrower use of funds.
Amazon Conservation Association: an Amazon-specific field option
The Amazon Conservation Association (ACA) presents itself as an Amazon-focused field-conservation organization, particularly in Peru and Bolivia. Its financial page publishes financial information and annual reports and identifies Charity Navigator four-star and Candid Platinum-level recognition.
The available public material does not establish a common cost-per-acre or cost-per-outcome figure that can be compared directly with Rainforest Trust. That is not evidence of low effectiveness; it means the organizations report different kinds of work. If ACA is your preferred geography or field approach, read the latest project-level reports and ask what outcome your unrestricted or restricted gift is intended to support.

Advocacy results may include stronger campaigns, public pressure, legal or policy changes and safer movement infrastructure. They are not acreage outputs, so comparing Amazon Watch’s work to a protected-area grant by “cost per acre” would misrepresent both models. This organization fits donors who want to support Indigenous-led political action and community organizing, including work whose effect may be indirect or take years to appear in a financial statement.
Amazon Conservation Team: Indigenous-led territorial partnerships
Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) describes a partnership model centered on Indigenous-led conservation and territorial management. It publishes audited financial statements, Form 990 filings and annual reports. Its financial page also cites an independent nonprofit evaluation service saying donors can “give with confidence” and reports a Charity Navigator overall rating of 97 out of 100 as of May 2022.
That rating date is older than the current reporting period. Treat it as historical context and check the evaluator’s latest profile before relying on it. ACT is a strong fit when the decision criterion is Indigenous leadership in planning and managing territory, rather than a single global acreage headline.

Why program percentages do not answer the cost-effectiveness question
A program-expense percentage tells you how an organization classifies spending. It does not show the result of the next dollar donated. A high ratio can coexist with very different intervention costs, geographic conditions, land prices, legal systems and time horizons.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The organizations above also use different denominators:
- Rainforest Trust reports acres safeguarded, species habitat and project approvals.
- RFUS reports acres covered by work, acres legally titled and acres monitored or protected.
- ACA emphasizes Amazon field conservation but does not publish a comparable cost-per-acre figure in the material considered here.
- Amazon Watch reports advocacy and community infrastructure, for which acreage is not the correct unit.
- ACT reports partnership and territorial-management work alongside financial audits and evaluator information.
No shared, independently verified marginal-impact denominator is published across these groups. A claim such as “one dollar saves X acres” would therefore require assumptions the available reports do not support.
A practical donation decision process
- Choose the intervention. Select protected-area creation, Indigenous titling and governance, field conservation, advocacy or a blended approach.
- Set the geography. If your gift must be Amazon-specific, favor organizations whose stated work and reporting focus on the basin. For Rainforest Trust, confirm the Amazon portion of any appeal because its headline totals are global.
- Decide how much control communities should have. RFUS, Amazon Watch and ACT foreground Indigenous partners in different ways. Read the current program description to understand who sets priorities and controls implementation.
- Choose restricted or unrestricted funding. A restricted gift can target a named project but may be less flexible. An unrestricted gift lets the organization respond to legal, political or ecological changes. Do not assume either type has the same marginal effect.
- Read the latest financial documents. Check the newest annual report, audited statements or Form 990. Note the reporting year, whether percentages are expenses or allocations, and whether figures are consolidated across programs.
- Look for an outcome chain. Ask what the donation funds, what immediate output is expected, how progress is measured and what evidence will show a durable result.
- Verify current information before giving. Projects, evaluations and ratings change. Historical figures such as ACT’s May 2022 rating should not be treated as current without checking.
Questions to ask before you donate
- Is the stated acreage Amazon-only, global, planned or already protected?
- Does “protected” mean a legal designation, a community title, active monitoring or a project area?
- Who owns the land and who makes operational decisions?
- What portion of an unrestricted donation reaches the program you care about?
- Are outcomes independently evaluated, or are they self-reported activity totals?
- Can the organization explain what an additional donation changes at the margin?
- How does it handle complaints, consent, safeguards and conflicts with government or extractive interests?
Clear answers to these questions are more useful than selecting a charity solely because it advertises the highest program percentage.

Choose Rainforest Trust if your priority is a protected-area strategy with large, explicitly reported acreage and species-habitat totals, and you accept that its headline numbers cover global conservation. Choose Rainforest Foundation US if your priority is Indigenous land tenure, legal titles and territorial governance, and you want reporting that distinguishes titled, supported and monitored areas.
Neither choice is objectively superior for every donor. They protect forests through different causal pathways, and the available reporting does not convert those pathways into a common impact-per-dollar score.
Bottom line for Amazon rainforest donors
There is no evidence-based universal winner. Rainforest Trust offers the clearest documented protected-area scale; Rainforest Foundation US offers the clearest land-rights and governance focus; ACA is an Amazon-specific field-conservation option; Amazon Watch is suited to advocacy and solidarity; and ACT is suited to Indigenous-led territorial partnerships. Match the organization to the result you want, verify the latest financial and project information, and treat acreage, expense ratios and evaluator ratings as different kinds of evidence rather than interchangeable proof of impact.
