Amazon’s Product Advertising API (PA-API) is on a sunset path. Amazon’s documentation states that PA-API will be deprecated on May 15, 2026, and directs developers to migrate to Creators API. Because that date has passed, treat PA-API as a legacy dependency: do not start a new integration, and make a migration plan for any production system that still calls it.

The safest replacement is the documented Creators API, provided your Associates account and use case qualify. Third-party data providers can reduce engineering work but require their own contract, marketplace and field checks. Scraping is a separate, higher-risk approach: a page being publicly viewable does not by itself grant permission to automate collection, store the data, or use it for affiliate publishing.

What changed with Amazon PA-API in 2026?

Amazon’s PA-API documentation contains a direct notice: “PA-API will be deprecated on May 15th, 2026. Please migrate to Creators API.” The notice appears in Amazon’s PA-API documentation and deprecation notice. Since the stated date is now in the past, PA-API should be handled as a legacy interface even if an existing account still receives responses.

Deprecation is not the same as a guaranteed instant outage for every account. Amazon can disable access by account, marketplace or product area, and an authenticated developer console may show account-specific notices that are not visible in a public page. Therefore, the operational rule is simple: freeze new PA-API development, verify the status of every current credential in the developer console, and move supported workloads to Creators API.

What PA-API was used for

PA-API provided programmatic access to Amazon product information for Associates integrations. A typical application might retrieve a product identifier, title, price, availability, image or other catalog fields and then send a shopper to the related Amazon product page. The exact fields available to an account can depend on the marketplace, account status and current Amazon documentation; do not assume that a field available in one locale is present in another.

Why the date matters to a production system

  • Credentials that work today may stop working after an account-level change or service retirement.
  • New features, bug fixes and marketplace additions are unlikely to be a safe assumption for a deprecated API.
  • Affiliate attribution can be lost if links, marketplace domains or account identifiers are not preserved during migration.
  • Cached product data can become misleading when price, availability or images change, so every stored record needs a retrieval timestamp and marketplace context.

Do not publish an uptime promise or a universal shutdown behavior that Amazon has not stated. Check your own developer console and account notices before scheduling the final cutover.

Who could use PA-API, and what authorization did it require?

PA-API access was not an anonymous catalog feed. Amazon’s PA-API access requirements state that an applicant needs an open Amazon Associates account, an application for PA-API and compliance with the Associates Operating Agreement and API license. An account that merely has an Associates tracking ID should not be assumed to have API access.

Eligibility checklist

  • An active Associates account for the marketplace you intend to use.
  • A PA-API application and credentials shown as active in the authenticated developer console.
  • Use that remains within the current Associates Operating Agreement and API license.
  • Links that send users to the related product detail page or another relevant Amazon page, as required by the license.
  • A migration plan, because the public notice names Creators API as the successor.

Requirements can vary by marketplace and can change without a code release. Record the country or marketplace associated with each credential rather than treating an account as globally valid.

What does the Associates license allow—and prohibit?

The API is only one part of the permission model. The Associates Program IP License and usage requirements govern how Program Content may be used. The license grants a limited right tied to the Associates program, not a general right to build an unrestricted Amazon product database.

“This license does not include any downloading, copying or other use of Program Content for the benefit of any third party, or any use of data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools.”

That wording is especially important for teams considering a scraper, a resale feed or a shared internal data lake. A technically successful download can still fall outside the license. The same policy limits Program Content use to sending users and sales to an Amazon Site and requires links to the related product detail or relevant Amazon page.

Questions to answer before storing or displaying data

  • Purpose: Is the data being used to send shoppers to Amazon and support eligible Associates activity, or is it being sold, licensed or supplied to another party?
  • Source: Did the record come through an authorized Amazon interface, a contracted provider with rights to supply it, or an automated collection method that the policy excludes?
  • Presentation: Are prices, availability, images, reviews and other fields displayed in the way the current policy permits?
  • Linking: Does each shopping call to action point to the relevant Amazon page and preserve the correct marketplace and attribution?
  • Retention: Have you read the current license before caching or archiving the value? Do not infer a retention period from an old implementation.

When the answer to any of these questions is uncertain, pause the feature and obtain a current policy interpretation from Amazon or qualified counsel. An API response is evidence that a request was served; it is not, by itself, permission for every downstream use.

What replaced PA-API?

Creators API is Amazon’s documented successor

Amazon’s deprecation materials identify Creators API as the supported successor for both new and existing integrations. The migration notice is published in Amazon’s Creators API deprecation documentation. Use that documentation and the account notices shown to your organization as the source of truth for onboarding, credentials, operations and supported resources.

Public material supplied for this article does not establish a universal Creators API quota, complete field-by-field parity list, pricing schedule or identical behavior in every marketplace. Do not promise that a PA-API response maps one-to-one to a Creators API response until you test the specific resources your application uses.

How to migrate without breaking affiliate links

  1. Inventory the existing integration. List every PA-API operation, field, marketplace, credential, cache, scheduled job and page template. Include secondary uses such as price alerts, feeds, search indexes and analytics.
  2. Confirm account status. Sign in to the Amazon developer console, verify the Associates account and marketplace attached to each credential, and save the current notices and permissions for your change record.
  3. Read the current policy first. Recheck the Associates Operating Agreement and IP license before moving data into a new cache, database or third-party service. Pay particular attention to product images, reviews, prices and availability.
  4. Follow the Creators API migration guidance. Create or enable the supported integration using the instructions in Amazon’s migration documentation. Do not copy PA-API authentication or request assumptions into the new client without verification.
  5. Build a compatibility layer. Keep your application’s internal product model separate from either API’s response shape. Map identifiers, titles, media, offer data and links into your own schema, and mark fields that are unavailable or differently defined rather than silently substituting values.
  6. Run a controlled dual period. For a representative set of products and marketplaces, retrieve both sources while PA-API remains available to your account. Compare identifiers, links, timestamps, missing fields and formatting. This is a validation exercise, not evidence that both services will remain available together.
  7. Preserve attribution and geography. Generate links for the correct Amazon marketplace and Associates tracking configuration. Store the marketplace with every record; an identifier or URL from one country should not be presented as universal.
  8. Add freshness controls. Save the source, retrieval time and marketplace alongside each product record. Show users when information was retrieved, and prevent an old price or availability value from being presented as a live guarantee.
  9. Cut over and monitor. Switch production traffic to Creators API, monitor authorization failures, missing fields, link destinations and response errors, and keep a rollback plan that does not reintroduce unsupported PA-API dependency.
  10. Retire PA-API secrets. After validation, remove unused credentials from jobs and secret stores according to your security process. Keep a migration record rather than leaving dormant keys in production.

Data-model changes worth making during migration

Use explicit fields for source, marketplace, retrieved_at, product_id, detail_url and availability_status. Keep unknown or unavailable values as null or an explicit “not returned” state; do not fill gaps with a value from another marketplace or an earlier retrieval. Store the affiliate destination separately from display text so a redesign cannot accidentally remove the required link.

PA-API, Creators API, providers and scraping: which option fits?

The choices differ more in authorization and operational risk than in code syntax. The table below uses only characteristics established by the available Amazon notices and policy material. Where Amazon has not published a stable universal value, the correct entry is to verify it for your account rather than guess.

Option Authorization and policy risk Field coverage Freshness Rate limits Reliability Engineering effort Cost Marketplace geography Affiliate attribution
PA-API Requires an Associates account, PA-API application and policy compliance; now a deprecated path. Existing integration’s fields; future support is not assured. Depends on request and cache design; no universal freshness guarantee stated. No stable publisher-owned quota statistic is available publicly; verify the authenticated console. Retirement and account-level changes are material risks. Low only for an existing integration; high risk for new work because it creates migration debt. Not stated as a separate API price in the supplied material. Credential and account dependent; verify each marketplace. Designed for Associates linking when used within the license.
Creators API Amazon’s documented supported successor; still subject to account eligibility and current policy. Parity with every PA-API field is not established; test the resources you need. Depends on the resource and your retrieval strategy; record timestamps. Account-specific limits are not stated publicly here; check the developer console. Preferred forward path, but monitor account notices and service changes. Moderate: requires schema mapping, credential work and validation. Not stated in the supplied material; confirm any account or usage charges with Amazon. Confirm support and credentials per marketplace. Use the relevant Amazon page and tracking configuration required by the Associates policy.
Third-party data provider Depends on the provider’s rights, contract, collection method and your downstream use; not automatically authorized by Amazon. Provider-specific; compare required fields and definitions. Provider-specific; inspect timestamps and update guarantees. Provider-specific; obtain limits in the contract or console. Depends on provider infrastructure and upstream access. Can be lower than building collection yourself, but integration and compliance review remain. Not stated; request a written price and usage terms. Must be checked country by country. A feed does not automatically preserve Associates attribution; implement and verify links separately.
Direct scraping Highest uncertainty: the Associates license expressly excludes data mining, robots and similar extraction tools, and other site terms or laws may apply. Potentially broad but unstable; page changes can break parsers. Can be frequent technically, but frequency does not make use authorized or accurate. No sanctioned limit is established; aggressive requests can create operational and policy risk. Fragile against layout, bot controls, authentication boundaries and regional differences. High: collection, parsing, monitoring, retries, legal review and incident response. Infrastructure and review costs vary; no reliable figure is stated. Must respect regional domains, localization and jurisdiction-specific rules. Attribution must still comply with Associates requirements; scraping itself does not grant permission.

Can you scrape Amazon product data legally?

There is no single yes-or-no answer that applies to every country, dataset, purpose and collection method. Public visibility is not the same as authorization. The Associates license expressly says it does not include “any use of data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools,” and it also restricts Program Content to the purpose of sending users and sales to an Amazon Site. Those terms create a clear policy risk for an Associates site that scrapes pages instead of using an authorized interface.

Separate questions can arise under website terms, contract law, privacy and data-protection rules, intellectual-property law, computer-access statutes and consumer-protection requirements. The answer can differ by jurisdiction, whether login-protected material is accessed, what fields are collected, how often requests run, and whether the output is sold or redistributed. This article cannot determine legality for a particular deployment.

A responsible review before any automated collection

  1. Define the exact data. Write down fields such as title, price, availability, image, review text, seller information and identifiers. Each can have a different policy or rights profile.
  2. Identify the authority. Read the current Amazon terms and Associates license for the marketplace involved. Do not rely on a cached copy or an old blog explanation.
  3. Check robots and access boundaries. Document robots instructions, authentication requirements and technical controls. Never bypass a login, CAPTCHA, paywall, rate control or other access barrier.
  4. Set a conservative request policy. Use low request rates, caching where permitted, clear identification where required and an immediate stop mechanism. A low rate reduces load; it does not cure a prohibition.
  5. Review privacy and intellectual property. Minimize personal data, define retention and deletion, and assess whether images, reviews or other expressive content can be copied, transformed or redistributed.
  6. Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice. Have qualified counsel review the countries in which your company, servers and users are located. Keep the written decision with the project.
  7. Plan attribution and freshness. If the project is an Associates site, ensure links and disclosures meet the current program requirements. Attach marketplace and retrieval timestamps to every record.

If the review cannot establish a lawful and contractually permitted basis, use Creators API or a provider that can document its rights instead of launching the scraper.

Why a technically successful scraper still fails

  • HTML layouts change without notice, breaking selectors and silently producing wrong values.
  • Localized pages can show a different currency, tax treatment, language or availability than the shopper’s marketplace.
  • Price and stock can change between collection and publication, creating an inaccurate claim.
  • Bot controls, authentication boundaries or request throttling can block collection and trigger account or network consequences.
  • Copying images, reviews or other content can create rights issues even when a title and price appear factual.

Costs, quotas and operational requirements

Do not publish a universal PA-API or Creators API request quota. No stable publisher-owned quota statistic was exposed in the available Amazon material. Limits can be account-specific, marketplace-specific or subject to change. Sign in to the authenticated developer console and read the limits attached to your credentials before sizing workers, caches or retry queues.

What to record for budgeting

  • Any Amazon account or program charges shown for your account.
  • Requests per marketplace and the expected peak and average rate.
  • Storage for product records, images and audit metadata, subject to the license.
  • Monitoring, retry and dead-letter handling for authorization and throttling errors.
  • Engineering time for field mapping and policy review.
  • Provider subscription, overage and redistribution terms if you choose an external feed.
  • Legal review and incident-response capacity for any collection method outside an authorized API.

Third-party provider prices, quotas and rights were not established here, so request a contract that specifies source authorization, marketplaces, fields, update timing, rate limits, redistribution rights and termination handling.

Freshness, caching and marketplace controls

Product data is not a timeless fact. Price, stock, seller, delivery estimate, image and title can change, and the same product can differ by Amazon marketplace. Every record should carry at least the marketplace and retrieval timestamp. Display the timestamp when a stale value could affect a purchase decision.

Safe record-handling pattern

  • Store the source system and marketplace next to the product identifier.
  • Keep retrieval time in a timezone-neutral format.
  • Separate factual catalog fields from generated editorial copy.
  • Mark unavailable fields explicitly instead of borrowing from another locale.
  • Expire or revalidate values according to the current policy and your risk tolerance.
  • Regenerate affiliate links from the correct marketplace configuration rather than reusing a URL copied from another country.

Before caching or displaying Program Content, reread the current Associates license. The policy, not an old cache design, determines what your application may retain and show.

Common migration failures and fixes

PA-API credentials still work, so the team postpones migration

Cause: Existing service access is mistaken for a long-term commitment from Amazon.

Fix: Treat the May 15, 2026 notice as the deadline that drives the project, verify the account console, and move new development to Creators API. Keep a tested cutover path rather than waiting for an outage.

A new client assumes field parity

Cause: Internal code expects every PA-API field to appear unchanged.

Fix: Build a mapping layer, test representative products in each marketplace, and expose “not returned” states in the user interface when a field is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Links lose attribution during a redesign

Cause: The page stores display URLs as plain text or mixes marketplace domains.

Cause: A cache omits retrieval time or displays old values without qualification.

Fix: Persist retrieved_at and marketplace, revalidate according to the permitted workflow, and label or suppress stale values.

A scraper is treated as an API substitute

Cause: Engineering feasibility is confused with contractual permission.

Fix: Complete the terms, robots, privacy, intellectual-property and jurisdiction review first. If permission is not documented, use the supported API or a provider with documented rights.

Quota assumptions cause production throttling

Cause: A blog post or another account’s limit is used for capacity planning.

Fix: Read the limits shown for your authenticated account, implement bounded retries and backoff, and monitor authorization and throttling responses separately.

Choosing an approach: a practical decision framework

  1. Need an Amazon-supported integration? Start with Creators API and confirm your Associates eligibility.
  2. Need fields or markets that the supported API does not provide? Document the gap, then evaluate a provider whose contract clearly grants the needed rights and geography.
  3. Considering scraping only because it seems cheaper? Add engineering, monitoring, legal review, compliance risk and failure recovery to the total cost before deciding.
  4. Need to publish prices or availability? Make timestamps, marketplace labels and revalidation part of the product requirement, not an afterthought.
  5. Need to redistribute data to customers or another business? Check the Associates license first; its limited license does not automatically permit third-party benefit or a resale feed.

For most Associates publishers, the defensible default in 2026 is Creators API plus a policy-aware data model. A provider can be appropriate when it documents authorization and meets your field, freshness and geography requirements. Direct scraping should be considered only after a written, jurisdiction-specific review—and rejected when the governing terms do not permit it.

Implementation checklist for the next release

  • Record every PA-API call and the page or job that consumes its result.
  • Confirm Associates account status and credentials in the developer console.
  • Read the current Associates Operating Agreement and IP license.
  • Open the Creators API migration documentation and identify required account actions.
  • Create a provider-neutral internal schema with source, marketplace and retrieval timestamp.
  • Test identifiers, links, missing fields and attribution in every supported marketplace.
  • Set monitoring for authorization, throttling, missing-data and stale-data conditions.
  • Document cache, image, review, price and availability handling.
  • Obtain written terms and rights information for any third-party provider.
  • Do not deploy automated scraping until terms, robots, privacy, intellectual-property and jurisdiction reviews are complete.
  • Cut over, verify shopper links and remove obsolete PA-API secrets.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
