Amazon stores more than your order list. Its current Privacy Notice, updated June 30, 2026, describes information you provide, data collected automatically while you use Amazon services, and information received from other companies. You can review much of that information in your account and Alexa privacy controls, but Amazon does not publish one universal retention period. Deleting selected Alexa activity is narrower than closing your account, and neither option guarantees removal of every related record from every system.
What data does Amazon save about you?
Amazon groups its collection into three broad sources: information customers provide, information collected automatically, and information received from other sources. The categories overlap because a single activity, such as buying an Alexa-enabled Echo speaker, can create account, device, voice, order and payment records at the same time.

Amazon also says it can collect identity information, images or video captured in stores, URL clickstream data and information connected with services that you use through the same account. The list is illustrative rather than a promise that every account contains every category.

Information collected automatically
When you browse or use Amazon services, the company says it can collect information through cookies, device identifiers and related technologies. Device and time-zone settings, browser or app activity, pages viewed, searches, clicks and interaction timing can help operate the service, detect abuse, remember preferences and tailor recommendations. A device identifier can link activity from a phone, tablet, browser or smart-home device even when the activity itself is not an order.

Information from other sources
Amazon says it may receive updated delivery or address information from carriers; merchant-account and page-view information; information from subsidiaries; advertising-interaction data; information from Alexa-linked devices; and credit-history information used for fraud prevention or certain financial services. This means your Amazon profile can include data that you did not type directly into an Amazon form.
Can you see what Amazon knows about you?
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers can access several areas of their account. The exact controls and labels can vary by country, app and product, but the stated access categories include:
- Recent orders and complete order history.
- Personally identifiable account information and account identifiers.
- Payment settings and notification settings.
- Recommendations and recently viewed products.
- Lists and registries.
- Content and device settings.
- Alexa voice recordings.
- Profile material such as reviews and reminders.
Reviewing these areas is useful before deletion because it shows which services, devices and content depend on the account. Order pages can also provide invoices or proof of purchase that may be needed after closure. Export or save anything you need while you are still signed in; account closure removes access to the account’s order history and other content.
A practical account audit
- Open your Amazon account while signed in and inspect orders, digital content, lists, addresses, payment settings, subscriptions and registered devices.
- Open the Alexa privacy controls and review recordings, transcripts and typed requests.
- Check Amazon Photos and any other uploaded content or service that uses the same credentials.
- Download invoices, receipts, photos and documents needed for warranties, returns, tax records or personal archives.
- Record which household members or third-party devices rely on the account so you can move them before closure.
How long does Amazon keep order history and other data?
There is no verified, universal number of days or years for all Amazon data. The official material describes retention according to the purpose of the information, how Amazon’s systems operate and what applicable law requires. A particular record can therefore outlast the activity that created it, while another type of data can be removed sooner.

Amazon’s Alexa terms say that it records, processes and retains Alexa interactions and other information from your account. That statement describes the service’s handling of interactions, not a fixed lifetime for each recording or transcript. If you need a precise answer for a particular record, identify the record type and ask Amazon through the applicable privacy or customer-support channel; do not infer a deadline from the account-closure confirmation window.
What happens when you delete Alexa history?
Alexa deletion is a targeted privacy action. Amazon states that when you delete Alexa voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat, it will delete those items from Amazon’s cloud. Processing can continue for some time, and timing varies by the type of information requested and Amazon’s internal systems.
How to review Alexa activity
- In the Alexa mobile app, open More, then Alexa Privacy.
- On an Echo Show device, open the device’s Alexa privacy controls and select the history or recording view.
- You can also use Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings page while signed in.
- Inspect recordings, text transcripts and typed requests before selecting an individual item or a broader deletion range.
What Alexa deletion removes
The specific voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with the selected chat are the items Amazon says it will delete from its cloud. The wording matters: it does not say that every record created by the interaction is deleted at the same time.

What may remain
Amazon’s Alexa FAQ identifies several kinds of related information that may remain, including attachments, information supplied through interactions, records of actions Alexa took, product searches, reminders, timers, alarms, orders, preferences, shopping lists, tasks and messages. Data collected by third parties, data stored outside Amazon’s cloud and de-identified data may also remain. De-identified information is no longer associated with you in the same way, but its continued existence means an Alexa-history deletion is not a universal erase command.

How is Alexa-history deletion different from closing an Amazon account?

Choose Alexa deletion when your goal is to remove particular voice or text activity while keeping the account. Choose account closure only when you are prepared to lose access to the entire account and its connected services. Closing the account is not a shortcut for deleting records held by carriers, merchants, advertisers, device partners or other third parties.
How to delete your Amazon account and personal information
Account closure is permanent. Amazon says that once the account is closed, it is no longer accessible and cannot be restored. The closure can affect linked services and sites that use the same credentials, as well as registered devices and content.
Before you submit the request
- Download Amazon Photos and any other uploaded content you want to keep.
- Download invoices and receipts needed for warranties, returns, taxes, reimbursements or proof of purchase.
- Resolve open returns, refunds, subscriptions, digital-content needs and device-management tasks where possible.
- Identify services, applications and household devices that sign in with the Amazon account, then prepare replacement credentials or account ownership.
- Check the account you are signed into. Closing the wrong account cannot be undone.
Closure procedure
- Open Amazon’s official account-closure and personal-information-deletion page while signed in to the account you intend to close.
- Review the products and services associated with that account. This review is your opportunity to discover linked devices, sites and content that will lose access.
- Select the confirmation for permanent closure and deletion, then choose the reason requested on the form.
- Submit Close my Account.
- Watch for Amazon’s confirmation by email or text and complete that confirmation within five days. Until you confirm, the request may not be finalized.
- After confirmation, treat the account as permanently closed. Do not expect the account, order history or linked services to be restorable.
What closure changes
Closing removes your ability to access the account’s order history, invoices, linked services, devices and other account content. It does not create a guarantee that every record disappears immediately or that legally required records are destroyed. Amazon specifically says it may retain information such as order history for tax, accounting or fraud-prevention purposes.

- Legal and operational obligations: Records may be retained when tax, accounting, fraud-prevention or other legal requirements apply.
- Different record types: Removing a recording does not necessarily remove an order, reminder, preference, message or action log created during the same interaction.
- Separate systems: Data can exist in systems that process billing, delivery, customer support, devices or content, each with its own deletion operation.
- Other organizations: Carriers, merchants, subsidiaries, advertisers, credit bureaus and device partners can hold information outside Amazon’s cloud.
- De-identification: A de-identified copy may no longer be linked to your account even though the underlying statistical or operational record remains.
- Processing delay: A submitted deletion request can require additional processing time before the requested items are removed from the relevant systems.
These limits do not make deletion meaningless; they define what the control actually promises. Use the narrowest control that meets your goal, save evidence you need before closure and avoid treating a confirmation message as proof that every copy has vanished.
Common situations and the safest response
You want to remove one embarrassing Alexa request
Use More > Alexa Privacy, locate the recording, transcript or typed request and delete the relevant item. If the interaction triggered an order, reminder, task, message or device action, inspect that separate record as well because Alexa deletion may not remove it.
You want to stop using Alexa but keep shopping history
Delete the Alexa activity you no longer want stored, review device and content settings, and leave the Amazon account open. Account closure would also remove access to orders, invoices and linked services, which is broader than necessary.
You are leaving Amazon permanently
Complete the download and dependency checklist, submit the closure request, and confirm the notification within five days. Store your saved invoices and content outside the account, because Amazon says a closed account cannot be restored.

You need an old invoice after closure
Do not rely on future access. Download invoices before submitting closure. Although Amazon may retain certain order information for legal or fraud-prevention reasons, that retention does not promise that you will be able to sign back in and retrieve the invoice.
A recording disappeared but related information is still visible
That can be consistent with Amazon’s stated behavior. Check for an attachment, order, reminder, timer, alarm, preference, shopping list, task or message created by the interaction. Also consider whether the remaining data came from a third party, is stored outside Amazon’s cloud or has been de-identified.
How to manage privacy without closing the account
Account closure is an all-or-nothing decision. For ongoing management, periodically review the account areas Amazon identifies as accessible: orders, payment and notification settings, recommendations, recently viewed products, lists, registries, content and device settings, voice recordings, reviews and reminders.
- Delete Alexa recordings, transcripts and typed requests you no longer want retained.
- Remove old addresses, payment methods, contacts and devices that are no longer needed.
- Review lists, registries, reviews, reminders and messages for information you would not want associated with the account.
- Check connected devices and services before selling, giving away or retiring hardware.
- Keep a private record of invoices and other documents outside the account when you need long-term access.
These steps reduce exposed account content without sacrificing order history or access to services you still use. They also make a later closure request safer because you have already identified and saved the material that matters.
The bottom line on Amazon data deletion
Amazon’s published policies support access to substantial account and Alexa information, but they do not provide one retention timetable for everything. Alexa deletion removes specified recordings, transcripts and typed requests from Amazon’s cloud while leaving possible related, third-party, outside-cloud and de-identified data. Account closure is permanent, requires confirmation within five days, ends access to the account and connected content, and may still leave records that Amazon must retain for legal, accounting or fraud-prevention reasons. Decide first whether you need targeted Alexa cleanup or irreversible account closure, then save the records you may need before acting.
