It is the better fit if you want those extras, use Alexa, or keep lots of apps installed; if you just need straightforward streaming and your regular Fire TV Stick 4K meets your needs, the Max may not justify paying more.
Who should buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max?
Choose the Max if you have a 4K HDR TV and want more storage, a higher-spec processor, Wi-Fi 6E support, or the Ambient Experience. It is also a natural choice for an Alexa household that prefers Fire TV’s interface and app ecosystem.
The upgrade is less compelling if you use an older HD or basic 4K television, install few apps, or are satisfied with your current streamer. Wi-Fi 6E is most useful with a compatible router and a network environment that can take advantage of the 6GHz band; without that, the stick can still use backward-compatible Wi-Fi, but the 6E-specific benefit is limited.
There is no controlled benchmark data here to quantify how much faster it is in everyday use. Amazon describes the model as its most powerful Fire TV Stick at launch, while TechRadar’s 2023 review considered the speed, storage and Ambient Experience worthwhile upgrades for buyers who value them. That is an editorial assessment, not a guarantee of a particular performance gain.

These differences matter most if you want extra room for apps or use a compatible 6GHz wireless network. Both models are 4K streaming devices; compare their exact regional listings for the included remote and current bundle details.

Does it support Wi-Fi 6E, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos?
Wi-Fi 6E
Yes. The 2nd-generation Max supports Wi-Fi 6E, including compatible 6GHz networks. To use that band, your router and network setup must support it; otherwise, the stick connects using a supported earlier Wi-Fi standard. Amazon’s Wi-Fi help documentation explains supported network connections. Wi-Fi capability alone does not ensure every app or game works with the device: Amazon advises checking the app or game’s “Works With” section for compatibility.
Picture and sound formats
The Max outputs 4K Ultra HD and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. It also supports Dolby Atmos audio. To benefit from a format, the TV, sound system, content and streaming app must support it; the stick’s specification does not guarantee every title is available in every format.

How much storage does it have?
The 2nd-generation Max has 16GB of internal storage and 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM, according to Amazon’s 2023 specifications. Storage is the space for apps and other device data; RAM helps the device run active tasks. The regular 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K has 8GB of storage in TechRadar’s comparison, so the Max gives you more room if you install a wider selection of apps.
What is Fire TV Ambient Experience?
Ambient Experience is a feature Amazon added to the Max, intended to make the television useful when you are not actively watching a show. It is one of the model’s distinguishing extras, but it is not a reason to upgrade by itself if you prefer the TV screen to remain off between viewing sessions.

How does it compare with Apple TV, Roku and Google TV?
The right streamer depends less on a single specification than on the ecosystem and interface you want. Compare the exact devices and regional versions available to you; support for apps and formats can vary by model and service.
- Fire TV: A sensible match if you use Alexa and prefer Amazon’s Fire TV interface and app selection. Consider whether the Max’s extra storage and Ambient Experience are worth the difference from the regular 4K stick.
- Apple TV 4K: Compare it if your household relies on Apple services or devices. Check the specific model’s price and the apps and voice features you need.
- Roku: Consider it if you prefer Roku’s interface and want to compare its available apps, voice features and HDR/audio support with your television and services.
- Google TV devices: They may suit a household organized around Google services or Assistant. Check the exact model’s app compatibility, formats and gaming features.
If cloud gaming or games are important, verify the specific service and title’s compatibility rather than assuming it follows from the streamer’s general specifications. Amazon also recommends checking each app or game’s “Works With” section.

What comes in the box?
The Amazon listing cited for this model says the package includes the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced, power cable and adapter, HDMI extender/cable, two AAA batteries and a quick-start guide. Bundles can differ by region, so check the destination listing before ordering. The Enhanced remote includes controls for a TV, soundbar and receiver. For the cited package details, see the Amazon product listing.
Can you connect it by Ethernet?
Amazon documents Ethernet connectivity for compatible Fire TV devices through an Amazon Ethernet Adapter sold separately. Confirm the adapter’s compatibility with the exact Fire TV Stick and destination listing before buying; it is an optional setup path, not part of the stated box contents.
Verdict
The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) is a worthwhile step up when its particular advantages solve a problem for you: more storage for apps, Wi-Fi 6E for a compatible network, or Ambient Experience alongside a higher-spec processor. It is not an automatic upgrade for every 4K viewer. If you want to buy, check the current price, stock and bundle in your region, since those details change and are not established here.
