Amazon Bedrock GPT-6 inference is billed by tokens, not by request. For every call, estimate input-token charges, output-token charges, prompt-cache writes, prompt-cache reads, and any applicable non-inference Bedrock services. The practical formula is (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate) + cache-write charges + cache-read charges + other applicable service charges.
There is no single GPT-6 price. Your total depends on the GPT-6 variant, Global versus in-Region inference, context length, service tier, cache usage, Batch eligibility, and the ratio of input to output tokens. The figures below are AWS model-card and pricing-page figures available in 2026. Check the live AWS table immediately before committing to a budget because rates, model availability, and regional options can change.
Published GPT-6 rates on Bedrock
The clearest published figures are for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Luna under Standard commercial Global CRIS (Cross-Region Inference). Prices are in US dollars per 1 million tokens. A request with more than 272,000 input tokens moves to the long-context schedule, and that schedule applies to the entire request rather than only to tokens above the threshold.

GPT-6 Astra
Astra’s short-context Global CRIS rate is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. A million tokens written to a prompt cache costs $12.50, while a million cached tokens read costs $1.00. Above 272,000 input tokens, the full request uses the long-context rates: $20 input, $25 cache write, $2 cache read, and $75 output per million tokens.

AWS also lists an Astra Ultrafast service tier at six times the corresponding Standard prices. The multiplier applies to the applicable Standard input, output, cache-write, and cache-read rates. Astra’s model card says Priority and Flex are unsupported for that model, so do not assume that every general Bedrock tier is available for Astra.
GPT-6 Luna
Luna’s published Global CRIS Standard rates are substantially lower: $0.10 per million short-context input tokens and $0.50 per million short-context output tokens, with $0.125 cache writes and $0.01 cache reads. Long-context rates are $0.20 input, $0.75 output, $0.25 cache write, and $0.02 cache read per million tokens.
The Luna model card lists in-Region and US Geo CRIS prices at a 10% premium to Global CRIS and provides premium-inclusive rates in its regional table. Select the actual geography first, then copy the rates from that table; do not apply Global CRIS prices to a residency-constrained deployment.

Input tokens and output tokens are separate dimensions
Bedrock measures the tokens sent to the model and the tokens the model generates. A short prompt can still produce a large bill if the answer is long, particularly with Astra’s $50 short-context output rate. Conversely, a large prompt with a very short response can be dominated by input charges. Count both dimensions for every workload rather than multiplying one average token number by a single blended rate.
For example, 2,000,000 Luna input tokens and 200,000 output tokens at short-context Global CRIS rates cost (2 × $0.10) + (0.2 × $0.50) = $0.30 before caching or other service charges. The result is an estimate from the published unit rates, not a billing quote.

Prompt-cache writes and reads are additional line items
When a reusable prompt prefix is written to a cache, the cache-write rate applies to the tokens written. Later requests that reuse that prefix incur the cache-read rate for the tokens served from cache. Cached reads are cheaper than ordinary input processing in the published Astra and Luna tables, but writes cost more than ordinary input. Caching therefore helps when a prefix is reused often enough to recover the initial write premium.
As an illustration, a 1-million-token Astra short-context prefix processed once without caching costs $10 each time. Writing it once and reading it on a later request costs $12.50 for the write plus $1 for each cached read. One write followed by one read is $13.50 instead of $20 for two uncached inputs. The same calculation for Luna is $0.125 plus $0.01 per cached read, compared with $0.10 per uncached million-token input. Actual savings depend on how many tokens are cacheable and whether the prefix remains identical under the service’s cache rules.
Other Bedrock charges can sit outside inference
The token formula does not automatically include every charge on a production bill. Add any non-inference Bedrock service charges that apply to your architecture, account, region, and request pattern. Keep those items separate from model-token estimates so a change in model usage is not confused with a change in surrounding services.
The 272,000-token context boundary
Both Astra and Luna use a 272,000-input-token boundary in the published model cards. Requests at or below 272,000 input tokens use the short-context schedule. Once the request exceeds 272,000 input tokens, the long-context schedule applies to the full request.
Do not price the first 272,000 tokens at the short rate and only the excess at the long rate. That blended calculation understates the bill. For example, a 300,000-token Astra request is priced using the long-context input and output table for the request, even though only 28,000 input tokens exceed the threshold. The same rule applies to cache-write and cache-read rates when the request is in the long-context band.

Inference geography and service tier
Global CRIS
Global CRIS can route inference across the supported AWS infrastructure for the model. Its price is the baseline shown in the Astra and Luna tables above, but routing, data-residency, and latency requirements may make another option preferable.
In-Region and US Geo CRIS
In-Region inference keeps processing within the selected AWS region when the model and account support it. US Geo CRIS constrains routing to the US geography. Luna’s model card identifies both options as 10% more expensive than Global CRIS and shows the resulting rates. Astra’s regional prices must be read from its current model card; do not infer them from Luna’s premium.
Standard, Ultrafast, and unsupported tiers
Bedrock generally exposes Standard, Flex, Priority, and Reserved service categories, but model support is specific. The published Astra card covers Standard and Ultrafast, states that Ultrafast is six times Standard, and says Priority and Flex are unsupported. Luna’s published figures in this material are Standard rates. Confirm the model’s supported tier and the tier-specific table before estimating.
When Batch pricing can reduce the estimate
AWS says select foundation models can run in Batch at 50% below on-demand rates. That is an eligibility statement, not a blanket GPT-6 discount. Verify that the exact GPT-6 variant, region, request type, and Batch workflow qualify before halving any number. If eligible, document the on-demand baseline and the Batch rate separately so a workload that later requires synchronous inference does not inherit an invalid discount.
Throughput quotas affect architecture, not the unit price
A quota limits how much traffic can be processed, but it does not change the per-token rate. AWS’s current General Reference lists cross-Region token-per-minute quotas of 4,000,000 for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Luna and 2,000,000 for GPT-6 Sol. These quotas count input plus output tokens.

| Model | Quota | What is counted |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | 4,000,000 tokens per minute | Input plus output |
| GPT-6 Luna | 4,000,000 tokens per minute | Input plus output |
| GPT-6 Sol | 2,000,000 tokens per minute | Input plus output |
If projected traffic approaches a quota, you may need batching, queueing, workload smoothing, quota increases, or a different inference option. Those decisions can change latency and implementation cost even when the model’s token price stays constant.
A repeatable GPT-6 cost-estimation workflow
- Choose the exact model variant. Record Astra or Luna and the model identifier used by your Bedrock integration. Never reuse Astra rates for Luna or vice versa.
- Choose inference geography. Decide among Global CRIS, in-Region, and US Geo CRIS according to residency, latency, and cost requirements. Use the table for that exact option.
- Choose the supported service tier. Start with Standard unless your workload has a documented need for another tier. Check model-card support; Astra’s published card excludes Priority and Flex and prices Ultrafast at six times Standard.
- Measure input and output tokens separately. Use production traces or a representative token-counting method. Record average, high-percentile, and maximum values because a small number of long prompts can cross the 272,000-token boundary.
- Classify every request by context band. Requests with 272,000 or fewer input tokens use short-context rates; requests above that point use long-context rates for the whole request.
- Identify cacheable prefixes. Estimate tokens written to cache, cache-hit frequency, and tokens read from cache. Apply cache-write and cache-read rates instead of treating cached tokens as ordinary input.
- Apply the formula. Multiply each token category by its rate per million, then add the categories. Keep the result in USD and label it as an estimate.
- Check Batch eligibility. If AWS confirms that the exact model and region qualify, apply the documented Batch rate. Otherwise use the on-demand or Standard table you selected.
- Add non-inference charges. Include any applicable Bedrock services or account-level costs that are outside model-token billing.
- Validate against the live AWS table. Recheck rates, regional availability, service-tier support, and quota values immediately before launch and whenever the model, region, or workload changes.
Worked estimates
Luna, 2 million input and 200,000 output tokens
For short-context Luna Global CRIS Standard:
- Input: 2,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.10 = $0.20
- Output: 200,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.50 = $0.10
- Estimated inference total: $0.30 before cache and other service charges
This workload is comfortably below the 272,000-input-token boundary per request only if those 2 million input tokens are distributed across multiple requests. If they are sent as one request, the long-context schedule applies instead.
Astra, 100,000 input and 20,000 output tokens
For short-context Astra Global CRIS Standard:
- Input: 100,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $10.00 = $1.00
- Output: 20,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $50.00 = $1.00
- Estimated inference total: $2.00 before cache and other service charges
The equal contribution from input and output shows why output length matters for Astra. Cutting the generated response by half would reduce the output portion by $0.50 for this request, while cutting input by half would reduce the input portion by the same amount.
Astra after crossing the context threshold
Suppose an Astra request has 300,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens. Because input exceeds 272,000 tokens, use the long-context rates:
Recommended Free Tools
- Input: 300,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $20.00 = $6.00
- Output: 20,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $75.00 = $1.50
- Estimated inference total: $7.50 before cache and other service charges
Pricing the first 272,000 input tokens at $10 and only the remaining 28,000 at $20 would produce an incorrect blended estimate. The long-context table applies to the full request.

How workload shape changes the bill
Long answers can dominate a small prompt
At Astra’s short-context Standard Global rate, 1,000,000 output tokens cost $50, while 1,000,000 input tokens cost $10. If an application sends concise prompts but generates lengthy reports, output controls such as maximum output tokens, structured formats, and early-stop conditions can have a larger cost effect than trimming a modest amount of input.
Large reusable instructions favor caching
Applications that send the same policy text, documentation set, or tool definitions on every request should separate stable prefixes from user-specific content where the API supports it. Measure cache hits rather than assuming them. A cache write that is never read adds cost without reducing ordinary input processing.
Threshold crossings deserve their own budget line
Track the percentage of requests above 272,000 input tokens. A small tail of oversized requests can move the entire request into the higher long-context schedule, making an average-token estimate look artificially low. Alert on token counts before sending requests when possible.
Common estimation mistakes and fixes
- Using one blended price: Fix it by calculating input and output separately.
- Applying the long-context rate only to excess tokens: Fix it by assigning the long-context schedule to the full request once the boundary is crossed.
- Assuming Global CRIS equals in-Region or US Geo CRIS: Fix it by selecting geography first and reading that option’s table.
- Counting cache reads as free: Fix it by adding cache-read tokens at the published cache-read rate and including cache writes separately.
- Applying the Batch discount automatically: Fix it by confirming model, region, and workflow eligibility before changing the estimate.
- Assuming every Bedrock tier is available: Fix it by checking the model card; Astra’s published card does not support Priority or Flex.
- Ignoring quotas: Fix it by comparing input-plus-output tokens per minute with the applicable quota and planning throttling or quota requests before launch.
- Treating a calculation as a quote: Fix it by labeling estimates, then reconciling them with actual AWS billing after a representative pilot.
A practical decision framework
Choose Luna when the workload’s quality, context, and latency requirements fit its lower published token rates. Choose Astra when its capabilities justify the higher input and output rates, then pay particular attention to output length and long-context usage. Choose Global CRIS when its routing meets your residency and latency requirements; choose in-Region or US Geo CRIS when geographic controls outweigh the listed premium. Use caching for stable prefixes that are reused enough to offset the write charge, and consider Batch only after AWS confirms eligibility for the exact deployment.
Document the assumptions beside every estimate: model variant, geography, service tier, context band, input tokens, output tokens, cache writes, cache reads, Batch status, currency, and the date of the AWS table used. That record makes a later price change or workload shift explainable instead of surprising.
What AWS means by inference
“When you submit an input to an FM, the model predicts a probable sequence of tokens and returns that sequence as the output. This is known as inference.”
That definition explains why Bedrock separates the two principal billing dimensions: tokens supplied to the foundation model and tokens generated by it. A reliable estimate follows the same boundary, then adds cache and service charges that apply to the way your application actually runs.
