Google Assistant has the stronger privacy default for audio: Google says recordings are not saved on its servers unless you enable audio saving. Alexa offers a useful privacy dashboard and deletion controls, but Amazon’s terms say Alexa interactions are recorded, processed and retained in the cloud. Amazon also removed its limited local-processing option on March 28, 2025. That makes Google the better starting point if minimizing default audio retention is your priority; either ecosystem still requires careful settings, regular deletion and use of the hardware microphone mute switch.

The answer depends on what you mean by private

There is no single privacy score for a voice assistant. A meaningful comparison separates several questions:

  • Is raw audio saved by default? A device may send audio to a cloud service for recognition without keeping a recording in your account, or it may retain recordings for later review and product improvement.
  • What can you see and delete? The practical value of a privacy policy depends on whether you can inspect recordings, transcripts and typed requests and remove them reliably.
  • Can people review interactions? Vendors may use employees or contractors to assess samples, troubleshoot failures or improve speech recognition. The size and conditions of that review matter.
  • Is the interaction used for personalization or profiling? Voice commands can be combined with account, shopping, calendar, contact and smart-home data to infer preferences.
  • Which software is actually running? Google Assistant is moving toward Gemini, so the behavior of a Nest speaker, an Android phone and a television may differ by device, country, account and software version.

On the evidence currently documented by Google, Amazon and independent 2025 studies, Google is the better choice for a privacy-first default on a compatible home device. Alexa can be made more controlled, but its baseline terms describe cloud retention of Alexa interactions and its strongest local-processing choice is no longer available.

At a glance: Alexa and Google Assistant privacy controls

Question Google Assistant and Nest devices Amazon Alexa and Echo devices
Raw audio saved by default Google Safety Centre says audio recordings are not saved on Google servers by default. Saving can be enabled through Web & App Activity. When you speak to Alexa, audio is recorded and sent to the cloud. Amazon’s terms say Alexa interactions and related account information are recorded, processed and retained in the cloud.
Review and deletion Assistant activity can be reviewed and deleted in My Activity. You can also say, Hey Google, delete what I said this week. In the Alexa app or on Echo Show, use More > Alexa Privacy to review and delete voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests.
Automatic deletion Google documents automatic deletion choices of three or 18 months, as well as turning audio storage off. The dashboard provides deletion controls; the exact automatic-deletion choices can vary by account and region, so select the shortest period offered.
Human review disclosure Google’s UK Safety Centre says human reviewers, including third parties, may process text queries and related information. Google’s speech-data explanation said reviewers examined around 0.2% of audio snippets in a 2019 disclosure. The cited Alexa terms describe use to provide, personalize and improve services but do not give a comparable current percentage for human review.
Local-processing option Google’s documented default is that audio recordings are not saved unless enabled; this does not mean all recognition or transcript data stays on the device. Amazon ended the Do Not Send Voice Recordings option on March 28, 2025. It had offered limited local processing on three models for some US-English users.
Platform outlook Google announced on March 14, 2025 that mobile users would move to Gemini and that a Gemini-powered experience was planned for speakers, displays and TVs. Alexa remains the named assistant on Echo products, but privacy behavior still depends on the device, account, region and current software.

Google Assistant: what its privacy default actually means

Audio saving is described as opt-in

Google’s Safety Centre states: By default, your audio recordings are not saved on Google servers. The relevant control is tied to Web & App Activity in your Google Account. If you leave audio saving disabled, a spoken request can still be processed to answer you, but Google’s stated default is not to keep the raw recording as an account activity item.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

That distinction is important. Not saving an audio file by default does not guarantee that no information from the interaction exists. A transcript, command history, device information or the resulting activity can be retained under other account settings. Google’s own explanation says Assistant interactions can be deleted in My Activity, and it supports automatic deletion after three or 18 months. Review the setting for the account that actually operates the speaker; a household can have several Google accounts with different activity policies.

Google has disclosed review of a small sample

Google says language experts may review audio snippets to improve speech recognition. Its official speech-data explanation reported that language experts reviewed around 0.2% of all audio snippets. That figure is a historical Google disclosure from 2019, not a guaranteed current rate for every Assistant or Gemini product. Google also said snippets used in that process were not associated with user accounts during review.

The Google UK Safety Centre adds a separate qualification: human reviewers, including third parties, may read, annotate and process the text of Assistant queries and related information to assess quality and improve Assistant. Therefore, the privacy claim is narrower than “nobody can hear or see anything.” It means Google documents a default against saving raw audio, while transcripts and associated activity can still be handled according to your account settings and improvement programs.

Deleting Google activity

  1. Open My Activity for the Google Account used by the assistant. Filter the history for Assistant or voice-related activity so you can distinguish commands from unrelated web and app events.
  2. Inspect individual entries before deleting. A command may show text, the device that handled it and related activity even when an audio recording is not saved.
  3. Delete entries or a date range. Google also documents the voice command Hey Google, delete what I said this week. Treat voice deletion as a convenience, then verify the result in My Activity.
  4. Set automatic deletion. Choose the shortest available period; Google documents three-month and 18-month options for relevant activity. Turning off audio saving is a separate decision from deleting existing history.

Alexa: a stronger dashboard but a broader cloud-retention statement

Amazon’s terms describe recording and retention

Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use state: Amazon records, processes, and retains Alexa Interactions and other information from your account … in the cloud to provide, personalize, and improve our services. When you interact by voice, Alexa records the audio and sends it to the cloud for processing. Amazon warns users not to share information they do not want used for those stated purposes.

This wording does not prove that a person routinely listens to every command. It does establish a different default posture from Google’s statement about audio not being saved by default: Amazon describes cloud recording, processing and retention as part of providing and improving Alexa. The amount retained, how long it remains and what controls apply can depend on device, region, account settings and the type of interaction.

Alexa Privacy is the main control center

Amazon’s Alexa Device FAQ directs users to More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app; the same controls are available on Echo Show devices. There you can review and delete Alexa voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests. Use the dashboard rather than relying only on a spoken deletion command: Amazon cautions that Alexa does not support voice requests to delete data in all circumstances and may not correctly interpret or execute them.

  1. Open the Alexa app and choose More. Select Alexa Privacy, then review the history for the Echo devices and accounts in your household.
  2. Check more than the audio list. Text transcripts and typed requests can reveal the same information even when you remove or never save an audio file.
  3. Delete individual items or available ranges. Confirm that the history view changes after deletion. Amazon’s warning means a successful-sounding voice command is not proof that every copy was removed.
  4. Review automatic deletion and personalization controls. Choose the shortest automatic-deletion period offered for your account and examine settings that use activity to personalize Alexa, shopping or recommendations.

The local-processing option ended in 2025

The Associated Press reported that Amazon removed the Do Not Send Voice Recordings option on March 28, 2025. It had allowed limited local processing on three device models for some US-English users. Amazon said users could still prevent Alexa from saving voice recordings, but removing the option eliminated a stronger choice: keeping supported requests on the device instead of sending recordings to the cloud. Amazon’s public statement was, The Alexa experience is designed to protect our customers’ privacy and keep their data secure, and that’s not changing.

The change is geographically and technically limited in the evidence available: it concerned three models and some US-English users, not every Echo in every country. The practical lesson is to check the controls displayed for your exact device rather than assuming an older guide’s local-processing instructions still apply.

Profiling is a concern for both ecosystems

Audio privacy and profiling are related but not identical. Even if raw recordings are deleted, a service may retain a transcript or the fact that you asked about a product, person, location or routine. That information can influence personalization or be combined with other account data.

A peer-reviewed Computers & Security study published in 2025 surveyed 1,103 people in Germany about smart-speaker privacy requirements. Participants generally wanted clearer explanations of what personal information can be derived from audio and a private mode that stores no recordings. The study found that Amazon Echo and Google Home/Nest users had fine-grained privacy settings, yet respondents still considered transparency and control inadequate.

A separate 2025 study in Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies used persona-based experimentation involving 1,171 and 24,530 voice queries over 20 months. It reported evidence that both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa engage in user profiling based on voice interactions. This is observed behavior in a research setup, not proof that every user receives the same profile or that available controls cannot reduce profiling. It does mean that choosing Google for its audio-saving default does not make the broader data trail irrelevant.

Google Assistant is changing, so identify the product before buying

“Google Assistant” no longer names one stable experience. On March 14, 2025, Google announced that mobile users would be upgraded to Gemini, that classic Assistant would later be unavailable on most mobile devices and that a Gemini-powered experience was planned for speakers, displays and TVs. The announcement said Assistant would continue operating on home devices until those changes arrived.

For a purchase or privacy review, record four details:

  • Hardware: Nest speaker, Nest display, Android phone, television or another device.
  • Country and language: features and privacy controls can be released at different times.
  • Account type: personal, family, school or work accounts may expose different controls.
  • Software and assistant version: an update or Gemini migration can change the screens, data practices or available commands.

Do not assume that a setting documented for classic Assistant on a phone applies unchanged to a Nest speaker or a Gemini-powered product. Before relying on a privacy claim, open the settings on the device you will actually use and read the current activity and audio-storage options.

How to configure either assistant for less exposure

Use the hardware mute control when a conversation is private

Software settings govern what happens after a wake interaction is detected. The physical microphone switch or button is the most direct way to prevent the speaker from listening for its wake word during a meeting, medical discussion or other sensitive conversation. Make it part of the routine rather than waiting for an accidental activation.

Keep sensitive accounts off the speaker

Linking shopping, calendars, contacts, calling, door locks and other smart-home services increases what a voice interaction can reveal or change. Connect only the services that the household needs, use separate household accounts where possible and review linked services after changing the primary account.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

Review history on a schedule

Set a monthly reminder to inspect Google My Activity or Alexa Privacy. Look for false wake-ups, commands made by visitors, sensitive names and requests that should not remain in a cloud history. Delete entries in the dashboard and confirm that the visible history is gone.

Use the shortest automatic-deletion period

Automatic deletion limits how long ordinary history remains without requiring constant manual work. Google documents three-month and 18-month choices for relevant activity. Alexa’s exact choices can vary, so choose the shortest period shown in your account and do not mistake an auto-delete setting for immediate deletion of every backup or operational record.

Explain the limits to everyone in the home

Guests and children may not know that a spoken request can create a transcript, trigger a purchase or expose a calendar entry. Tell household members when the microphone is muted, which commands are inappropriate and how to remove an accidental recording.

Which should you choose?

Your priority More suitable starting point What you still need to do
Minimize default saving of raw audio Google Assistant/Nest, because Google documents audio saving as off by default. Leave audio saving disabled, configure Web & App Activity and delete transcripts or related activity in My Activity.
One place to inspect recordings and transcripts Alexa/Echo has a dedicated Alexa Privacy dashboard, although the underlying terms describe cloud retention. Use More > Alexa Privacy regularly, verify deletions and do not depend solely on voice deletion.
Avoid a cloud-dependent assistant where possible Neither is a complete fit for this requirement. Both are cloud-connected consumer services; Alexa’s limited local-processing option was removed for the affected users and models in March 2025.
Stable behavior over several years Choose based on the exact hardware and its update policy, not only the assistant brand. Check whether your device is moving from classic Google Assistant to Gemini and reread settings after major updates.
Reduce profiling and personalization Neither has a universal advantage established by the available evidence. Limit linked services, review personalization controls and delete activity on a recurring schedule.

Common mistakes that weaken privacy

  • Confusing “not saved” with “not processed.” Google’s default concerns saving audio recordings; a request still has to be processed, and transcripts or related activity may remain.
  • Assuming a mute command is equivalent to the physical switch. A spoken request depends on the assistant hearing and interpreting it. Use the hardware control for sensitive periods.
  • Deleting only audio. Text transcripts, typed requests, device logs and linked-account activity can communicate the same facts.
  • Relying on an old Alexa tutorial. Instructions for Do Not Send Voice Recordings became obsolete for the affected devices and users after March 28, 2025.
  • Applying a phone policy to a speaker. Google’s move toward Gemini and differing regional rollouts mean that mobile, Nest and TV behavior may not match.
  • Treating a historical statistic as a current guarantee. Google’s 0.2% human-review figure comes from a 2019 explanation; it should not be read as a promise for every current Assistant or Gemini product.

Bottom line for a privacy-conscious buyer

Choose Google Assistant or a Nest device when your first test is whether raw audio is saved by default: Google explicitly documents that it is not unless you enable saving. Choose Alexa only after accepting Amazon’s cloud-retention description and configuring Alexa Privacy, deletion and personalization controls for your exact account and region. Neither platform is completely private, and independent 2025 research found profiling evidence for both. The safest setup is the one you actively maintain: microphone muted during sensitive conversations, shortest automatic deletion selected, linked services limited and activity reviewed after software or assistant changes.
