Verdict: The Amaran T2c is a well-built, portable two-foot RGBWW tube that makes portraits, video sets and practical-light scenes more creative without giving up accurate white light. Its removable battery grip, broad color control, mounting options and built-in effects make it unusually versatile as a rim light, fill, background accent or visible prop. The trade-offs are a professional-level price, awkward onboard controls and limited ability to overpower bright daylight.
What the Amaran T2c is best at
The T2c is a 20W RGBWW LED tube designed for photographers, videographers, streamers and other creators who need one compact light to perform several jobs. You can set a conventional white color temperature, dial in a saturated hue, animate an effect, run it from a battery grip or mount it to a stand. That flexibility matters more than raw brightness when you are working in a small room, on location or in a shot where the light itself is part of the composition.
Use it close to a portrait subject as a colored edge or fill, hide it behind furniture to create a background wash, place it just outside the frame for a hair light, or leave it in view as a deliberate neon-like prop. The two-foot form is long enough to create a visible streak on a subject or background but still manageable to hold, lean against a surface or pack for location work.

The lux figure is a manufacturer measurement at a specific distance, color temperature and output setting; it should not be treated as a guarantee that the tube will light a large room. The color ratings indicate that the T2c is intended to produce camera-friendly white light, while the SSI figures provide additional comparisons with tungsten and daylight references.

Build, mounting and what comes in the box
The tube uses a solid metal construction that Digital Camera World’s George Cairns described as well built. A rear OLED shows settings, and the included battery grip can be removed when you want the shortest or lightest configuration. The package includes the tube, swappable battery grip, AC power supply and cable, a 3/8-16 eyebolt and a carrying case.
Mounting is more flexible than the shape suggests. The NATO rail supports compatible clamps and handles, while 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 mounting options let you attach the light to common stands, magic arms or other rigging. One notable omission is a 1/4-inch socket at the tube end, which limits some end-on mounting approaches. Plan to use the rail or the provided threaded option rather than assuming every small tripod head will attach directly to an end cap.
Light quality and color control
Accurate white light
For interviews, portraits and product clips, the T2c can operate like a conventional bi-color light. Set a color temperature within its 2,500–7,500K range to blend with warm practical lamps, neutral indoor fixtures or cooler daylight coming through a window. Green–magenta adjustment is useful when the surrounding lights have an unwanted tint that a simple Kelvin adjustment cannot correct.
RGBWW color
HSI control provides independent hue, saturation and intensity adjustments, so you can make a subtle colored edge or a deeply saturated background accent. RGBWW hardware also gives the tube dedicated warm and cool white emitters rather than relying only on mixed RGB diodes, helping it produce more natural skin tones when you are not using a saturated color.
Presets and effects
The 46 gel presets provide quick starting points based on familiar colored-gel looks. Fifteen effects cover club lights, paparazzi, lightning, television, candle, fire, strobe, explosion, faulty bulb, pulsing, welding, cop car, color chase, party lights and fireworks. These modes are useful when you need a repeatable animated look quickly; the app is a better choice when you want to fine-tune timing or build a custom effect.

Controls: onboard interface, app and DMX
Onboard operation
The rear OLED and physical controls let you work without a phone, which is valuable on a set where a light must be adjusted immediately. In practice, the small interface is fiddly. Changing a value or navigating between modes takes more attention than the tube’s simple shape implies, especially when the light is mounted overhead or you are wearing gloves.
Sidus Link app
Digital Camera World found the Sidus Link app more intuitive than the physical controls. Use the app when the tube is hidden behind furniture, placed high on a stand or being used as one of several lights. Phone control also makes it easier to select a precise CCT, adjust HSI values, choose a gel preset or configure an effect without reaching into the scene. Bluetooth pairing behavior and available features can vary with app and firmware versions, so update the app and light before an important shoot.
DMX integration
For a studio or live-production workflow, DMX control is available through a USB-C-to-5-pin adapter. The adapter is an additional piece of hardware, and you should confirm the connector and control requirements of your console before building the light into a permanent rig. DMX is most useful when the T2c needs to follow cues with other fixtures rather than being adjusted manually.
Battery life, AC operation and portability
The removable battery grip is the feature that most changes how the T2c can be used. With the grip attached, you can carry the tube, hold it just outside a frame, place it in a location without a convenient outlet or move quickly between setups without dragging a mains cable. Remove the grip for a cleaner studio installation or when you want to reduce the weight on a mount.
The manufacturer’s regional information states approximately four hours at maximum output with the battery grip. That is an approximate figure, not a universal runtime specification: battery configuration, region, firmware, temperature and output mode can affect the result. A B&H product Q&A also states that the light can run from its internal power or the battery grip. Check the exact battery arrangement and runtime for the regional package you are buying, and bring AC power or a spare battery plan for a full-day production.

When powered from AC, the tube is better suited to a studio, streaming desk or fixed background installation. For location work, charge the grip before leaving, test the light at the brightness you expect to use and keep the power supply available for breaks or extended takes.
Portrait lighting: is it bright enough?
Yes, when you use it close to the subject and treat it as an accent, fill or eye light. A tube positioned near the face can create a clear colored rim or a soft, directional wash, and the tunable white modes can balance with the room. Its narrow form also makes it easy to keep out of frame while still producing a visible edge on hair, shoulders or cheekbones.
The T2c is less convincing as a distant key light for a large group or as a replacement for a powerful daylight fixture. The manufacturer’s 475+ lux at 1 m is modest compared with dedicated high-output COB lights, and the independent review found that the 20W output struggled to make a noticeable difference in bright daylight. Move it closer, work in shade or use it as a colored accent when the ambient level is high.
A practical portrait setup
- Set the T2c to a white CCT that matches the room, or select a color in HSI mode for a deliberate contrast.
- Place it just outside the frame beside or behind the subject for a rim or hair light.
- Lower saturation and intensity until skin remains natural if the light is serving as fill rather than an effect.
- For a stronger color statement, move the tube closer before increasing brightness; distance has a major effect on how much light reaches the subject.
- Check the result through the camera, because a saturated color can clip a channel or change the appearance of skin even when the overall exposure looks correct.
Video, streaming and practical-light uses
Background and set lighting
Hide the tube behind a sofa, desk or shelf to create a clean line of color without showing the fixture. Because the tube can be controlled remotely, you can adjust the background while staying in the shooting position. A slow color change can separate a talking-head scene from a static backdrop without distracting motion.
On-camera prop
Leaving the T2c visible turns the light into part of the production design. The two-foot shape reads clearly in a medium shot, and the gel presets or effects can support a nightclub, workshop, emergency-light or futuristic look. Secure it so it cannot roll or fall, especially when the battery grip is attached.

Practical and motivated effects
The candle, fire, faulty-bulb, television, lightning and cop-car effects can motivate visible changes in the scene. Use them sparingly: an effect that looks convincing in a short insert can become distracting during a long interview. For repeatable takes, record the selected mode and intensity so the light can be restored after a break.
How it compares with other compact tubes
The most useful comparison is not simply wattage. Pixel control, color range, battery design, effects, mounting and intended environment all change which tube makes sense.
| Light | Output and size information | Color range or pixels | Effects and control | Battery information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amaran T2c | 20W; two-foot tube | 2,500–7,500K; RGBWW HSI and green–magenta adjustment | 46 gel presets, 15 effects; onboard, Sidus Link and DMX with adapter | Removable battery grip; manufacturer states approximately four hours at maximum output for a regional configuration |
| Aputure MT Pro | Smaller 7.5W alternative | 36 individually controllable RGBWW pixels; 2,000–10,000K | Pixel-level effects and app-based control are its key distinction | Not stated in the available product comparison |
| Godox LC500 Air | 23.6-inch inflatable tube | 2,800–10,000K | 14 effects and app control | About 94 minutes at full brightness, according to the comparison information |
The T2c is the stronger fit when you value a removable grip, metal construction, standard mounting choices and a balanced RGBWW/white-light feature set. The MT Pro is more compelling if individually controllable pixels and a wider CCT range matter more than output. The LC500 Air is attractive when low weight and an inflatable form are priorities, but its stated full-brightness runtime is much shorter than the T2c’s approximate regional figure.
A practical setup workflow
- Choose the power mode. Attach the battery grip for handheld or cable-free work, or connect the supplied AC power supply for a fixed setup.
- Secure the light. Use the NATO rail, 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 option with a properly tightened clamp or stand. Do not rely on an unsupported end-mounted 1/4-inch connection.
- Select the basic mode. Start in a white CCT mode for matching ambient light, HSI for a custom color, a gel preset for a quick look or an effect for animation.
- Refine from the easiest control point. Use the rear interface for immediate changes, Sidus Link when the fixture is difficult to reach, or DMX when it must follow a lighting console.
- Place the tube for the job. Bring it close for portrait fill or a bright accent, hide it behind set dressing for a background glow, or keep it in frame when it is part of the design.
- Check exposure and color on camera. Judge the light through the camera at the intended frame rate and shutter settings, not only by looking at the OLED.
- Secure cables and spare power. Route the AC lead away from walkways, and carry a charging or replacement plan for long location sessions.
Strengths and limitations
What the T2c does well
- Accurate-looking white light with high manufacturer-listed CRI, TLCI and CQS figures.
- RGBWW color, green–magenta correction, gel presets and animated effects in one fixture.
- Removable battery grip for handheld and off-stand use.
- Metal construction and several mounting methods.
- Phone control that is easier to use than the onboard interface.
- A form factor that works as both a hidden source and a visible prop.
Where it falls short
- 20W output is limited for bright daylight, large rooms or distant key-light work.
- The OLED and physical buttons are fiddly compared with app operation.
- There is no 1/4-inch socket at the tube end.
- The $199 listed price places it above many casual creator lights.
- Battery runtime depends on the exact regional configuration and operating conditions.
Is the Amaran T2c worth $199?
At the $199 price listed by B&H Photo Video on October 20, 2026, the T2c makes the most sense for a creator who will use several of its capabilities: accurate white light, RGB color, effects, battery operation and flexible mounting. Buying it only for a low-power daylight key would be poor value; its output is better understood as close-range accent or fill light.

The value improves if you regularly shoot portraits, music or short-form video, stream from changing locations, or need one fixture that can serve as a practical prop. If your priority is the smallest possible pixel-controlled tube, the MT Pro’s 36 individually controllable pixels may be more relevant. If minimum weight and an inflatable body matter most, the LC500 Air offers a different compromise. Confirm current pricing, battery contents and accessory costs before ordering.

Common problems and fixes
The tube looks too dim
Move it closer before raising intensity, remove competing daylight where possible and use it as a rim or fill rather than a distant key. In direct sun, expect a subtle accent instead of a dominant source.
Changing settings on the light is frustrating
Use Sidus Link for detailed adjustments, especially when the tube is mounted or hidden. Keep the onboard controls for quick changes and emergency operation.
The battery does not last as expected
Check whether the package uses the stated regional battery configuration, confirm the output level and effects mode, and plan for AC power or a spare battery during long sessions. The approximately four-hour figure is not a guarantee for every configuration.
The tube will not fit the planned mount
Use the NATO rail or the available 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 mounting options. Because the tube end lacks a 1/4-inch socket, an end-mounted tripod connection may require a clamp or adapter.
The color does not match other fixtures
Start with CCT, then adjust green–magenta rather than trying to correct the mismatch with saturation alone. For a controlled multi-light setup, use DMX through the USB-C-to-5-pin adapter and verify that all fixtures use the same control conventions.
Final assessment
Digital Camera World rated the T2c 4/5 for features, 4/5 for design, 4/5 for performance and 3/5 for value. Those scores fit the practical experience described here: the tube is sturdy, flexible and genuinely fun to use, but its price and limited daylight punch keep it from being an all-purpose key light. For portraits, video accents, background color and creative prop work, it is a capable single-fixture toolkit; for large or sunlit scenes, plan on a brighter companion light.
