Altium documents layered security controls for Altium 365, including encryption at rest, HTTPS connections, identity controls, network protections, and disaster-recovery planning. Its March 2026 whitepaper states that the service is SOC 2 Type 2 attested, has a CSA STAR Level 1 self-assessment, and makes GDPR commitments. Those controls and attestations can support a customer’s security and compliance program; they do not, by themselves, make the customer or its designs compliant. For export-controlled work, Altium presents GovCloud—a US AWS GovCloud deployment operated exclusively by US Persons—as the option to assess, subject to customer-side requirements and feature restrictions.

What Altium 365’s security approach covers

Altium describes security as a lifecycle that spans software development, cloud infrastructure, access management, network protection, monitoring, and resilience. Its public materials describe controls and assurance evidence, but do not publish independent test findings, a penetration-test score, a breach rate, or a service uptime percentage. Treat the published information as a description of the provider’s approach, not as a guarantee that risk is eliminated.

Secure development and operations

Altium’s platform security and architecture pages list architectural reviews, dependency scanning, code reviews, dynamic application-security testing, continuous vulnerability management, and independent third-party testing. Altium does not disclose the findings of those tests on the public pages reviewed. The same materials say infrastructure access follows least privilege and is logged, auditable, and continuously monitored.

Cloud infrastructure and encryption

Altium says Altium 365 runs on AWS. Its security architecture page identifies Amazon RDS for databases, Amazon S3 for standard binary storage, Amazon FSx for high-performance binary storage, and dedicated Elasticsearch clusters for search. The page says stored data is encrypted at rest using AWS Key Management Service (KMS) keys backed by hardware security modules validated to FIPS 140-2. Key use is logged and sent to a security information and event management (SIEM) system for monitoring.

These controls help administrators manage who can sign in and how access is monitored, but their effectiveness depends on customer configuration and identity-provider policies. Confirm which controls are available for the specific deployment and plan, and test the intended provisioning, offboarding, and alerting workflows.

Network protection

Altium says all regions are placed behind a web application firewall and application load balancer, and requests must pass through the load balancer. Administrative connectivity is restricted to internal staff and resources on Altium’s corporate network. The public materials describe these safeguards but do not provide their configuration details or independent test results.

What compliance evidence does Altium publish?

SOC 2 Type 2

Altium’s March 2026 security whitepaper states that Altium 365 is SOC 2 Type 2 attested. In its 2023 SOC 2 announcement, Altium says Type 2 evaluates how effectively controls operate over a specified period, whereas Type 1 assesses control design at a point in time. Altium says it conducts Type 2 audits annually and provides the report to current and prospective users under NDA. Buyers should request the current report and review its scope, period, exceptions, and any complementary controls assigned to customers.

Use “attested” when describing the evidence in the whitepaper. A SOC 2 report is an assurance report about controls within its defined scope and period; it is not a blanket certification that every customer configuration or use case is secure.

CSA STAR Level 1 and GDPR

The March 2026 whitepaper says Altium 365 achieved CSA STAR Level 1 through a self-attestation against the Cloud Controls Matrix and Consensus Assessments Initiative Questionnaire (CAIQ). The document also describes GDPR commitments. These are useful inputs to vendor review, but they do not establish that a customer’s processing is GDPR-compliant: the customer must assess its own purposes, data, configuration, contracts, and legal obligations.

ITAR, EAR, and other regulated work

Altium says GovCloud can help customers reach ITAR compliance. The reviewed platform statements do not establish that using Altium 365 or GovCloud alone makes a customer compliant with ITAR, the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), CMMC, GDPR, or another regulation. Customer systems, personnel, access rules, processes, and configuration remain relevant. Validate the deployment and its documented scope with your compliance and export-control teams before placing regulated designs in it.

Where is Altium 365 data stored, and when should you consider GovCloud?

Altium describes GovCloud as a dedicated US region in AWS GovCloud, operated exclusively by US Persons. AWS describes GovCloud US-East and US-West as operated by US citizens on US soil. Altium also says customers determine who is added to a workspace and who receives access to workspace data. Its GovCloud page describes outbound-traffic controls through a proxy and restricted functionality.

The reviewed material does not state the standard platform’s specific region geography, nor does it provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison between standard Altium 365 and GovCloud. Do not infer a standard-region location from the fact that the service runs on AWS. Confirm available regions and applicable data-residency terms with Altium for the intended workspace.

Decision point Standard Altium 365 Altium 365 GovCloud
Region and operation Specific region geography: not stated in the reviewed Altium public security materials. Dedicated US AWS GovCloud region; operated exclusively by US Persons, according to Altium.
Export-controlled use Suitability for a particular ITAR or EAR workload: not established in the reviewed materials. Altium positions GovCloud as able to help address ITAR-related requirements; customer compliance is not automatic.
Outbound traffic and functionality Details not stated in the reviewed materials. Altium describes proxy-based outbound-traffic controls and restricted functionality.
Workspace access Altium documents workspace and group management; the customer determines workspace membership and access. Altium says customers determine who is added to a workspace and who receives access to its data.

For a regulated design environment, compare the actual deployment on geography, personnel eligibility, outbound-traffic restrictions, supported functionality, identity policy, and customer responsibilities. Ask Altium to confirm which features and integrations are supported in GovCloud before relying on a workflow that exists in the standard service.

What backup and recovery targets does Altium publish?

Altium’s 2024 security whitepaper says an automated backup system copies stored data to backup regions. It gives a recovery point objective (RPO) of 24 hours and a recovery time objective (RTO) of 24 hours, and says the disaster-recovery plan is reviewed and tested every 120 days. These are stated targets and process commitments, not a promise that every incident will meet those times or that no data loss will occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For business continuity planning, compare the targets with your organization’s own acceptable data-loss and downtime limits. Confirm what the targets cover, how restoration is requested, and whether your team needs separate exports or backups for its own recovery obligations.

How should an organization evaluate Altium 365 before adoption?

  1. Request current assurance evidence. Ask for the current SOC 2 Type 2 report under NDA and the materials supporting CSA STAR and GDPR statements. Check report scope, audit period, exceptions, and any customer-side controls.
  2. Confirm residency and deployment. Get written confirmation of the region available to your account. If designs are export-controlled or subject to US-person restrictions, evaluate GovCloud specifically and confirm its eligibility, operational boundaries, and feature limitations.
  3. Map identity controls to your policy. Verify SAML SSO, SCIM, identity-provider MFA, IP whitelisting, workspace/group permissions, event logging, and SIEM integration in the selected deployment. Define who owns provisioning, access reviews, and offboarding.
  4. Validate recovery fit. Compare Altium’s published RPO/RTO targets with your continuity requirements, and clarify backup scope, restoration process, and customer-side recovery needs.
  5. Review the whole compliance boundary. Include the platform, identity provider, connected systems, users, data flows, and customer operating procedures in the assessment. A provider’s controls contribute evidence; they do not replace the customer’s legal and technical review.
