Use Windows Sandbox for short, disposable jobs; use a dedicated Hyper-V or other virtual machine when an autonomous agent may run hostile code or must keep state; use Docker Sandboxes for a microVM-backed developer workflow; and use WSL2 for convenience, never as the security boundary. Your choice matters because an agent can execute commands, install packages, read files, call network services and follow instructions hidden in documents. Mounts, credentials, MCP servers and network settings can weaken even a strong isolation layer.
Choose the boundary before choosing the tool
“Sandbox” describes several very different mechanisms. A normal Windows or Linux container isolates processes and files while sharing the host kernel. A virtual machine supplies a separate guest kernel. A microVM uses a minimal virtual machine to give an agent a VM-style boundary with container-like startup and tooling. Those differences determine how much an escape or kernel-level exploit could expose.
For an AI agent, evaluate more than whether code starts successfully. The relevant questions are:
- Can the workload execute arbitrary binaries, scripts and package installers?
- Can it see host files, browser profiles, SSH keys, cloud credentials or password stores?
- Can it make outbound requests, receive inbound connections or scan your local network?
- Does it need state after shutdown, several cooperating services, a GPU or hardware devices?
- Can you reconstruct what happened and reset the environment quickly?
Microsoft’s container-security guidance says ordinary Windows Server and Linux containers are not a robust boundary for hostile multi-tenant workloads. Hypervisor-isolated containers wrap a container in a lightweight VM to provide hardware-level separation. That distinction is why an ordinary container inside WSL2 should be treated as a development convenience, not your final containment layer.

Practical recommendations at a glance
| Need | Recommended starting point | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open an untrusted Windows application or run a short test | Windows Sandbox | Hyper-V-backed desktop that is erased at close | No durable state; startup and feature support are limited |
| Run a long-lived autonomous agent against hostile inputs | Dedicated Hyper-V or other VM | Separate guest kernel and a boundary you can manage independently | More memory, patching, startup time and administration |
| Use Linux-first tooling during development | WSL2 with carefully scoped containers | Excellent Linux workflow on Windows | Microsoft explicitly says WSL is not a security sandbox |
| Keep a container workflow but strengthen isolation | Docker Sandboxes | Agent execution occurs in microVMs | Host integrations and credentials still require auditing |
| Avoid operating the local isolation layer | Managed agent sandbox | Files, commands, packages, ports, snapshots and resumable state can be provided as a service | Provider trust, data residency, network policy and recurring cost |
What “safe” means for an AI agent
Separate the agent from your identity
Run the agent under a dedicated, non-administrator identity. Give it only the API keys required for the current task, preferably short-lived or narrowly scoped tokens. Do not expose your normal Windows profile, browser cookies, password manager, SSH directory or cloud CLI configuration. A sandbox does not make a credential harmless: if the agent can read a token, code running inside the sandbox can use that token until it expires or is revoked.
Separate the agent from your files
Use an explicit exchange directory containing copies of the inputs and an output directory for results. Mount only those paths, and make input mounts read-only whenever possible. A broad mapping such as your entire user profile defeats the purpose of isolation because the agent can search documents, source code, browser data and secrets that were never part of the task.
Separate the agent from the network
Disable networking for tasks that do not need downloads or external APIs. When access is required, allow only the destinations and protocols the workflow needs. Outbound access lets an agent upload files, fetch additional tools or receive instructions; inbound exposure can turn a development service into a reachable attack surface. Record the policy so a later change is deliberate rather than accidental.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assume prompts and files can be hostile
Prompt injection can arrive in an issue, README, PDF, web page or code comment. The agent may be persuaded to run commands that conflict with your intent. Treat every input file and tool response as untrusted, and put the execution environment behind the same boundary you would use for an unknown program.
Option 1: Windows Sandbox
When it is the right fit
Windows Sandbox is a lightweight desktop environment for untrusted Win32 applications. It uses Hyper-V hardware virtualization, and software installed during a session is removed when the sandbox closes. That reset-on-close behavior is its strongest safety feature: a failed experiment does not leave packages, persistence mechanisms or configuration changes on the host.
Use it for opening a suspicious installer, testing a package, running a bounded coding task or asking an agent to transform a disposable copy of data. It is a poor fit for a database, service or agent that must resume days later.
Configure a minimal session
- Enable Windows Sandbox in the Windows Features dialog and restart if Windows requests it. Hardware virtualization must be enabled in firmware, and the edition and hardware should meet Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
- Create a Windows Sandbox configuration file with a
.wsbextension. Set networking to disabled unless the task genuinely requires it. - Map a staging folder rather than your profile. Set the mapped folder to read-only for source material; use a separate, explicitly writable output folder if results must be copied back.
- Launch the
.wsbfile, verify that only the intended folders appear, and check that no credentials or unrelated drives are visible before starting the agent. - Close the sandbox when the task is complete. Do not rely on a snapshot inside the session for retention; copy only reviewed outputs to the host.
A minimal configuration can look like this:
<Configuration>
<Networking>Disable</Networking>
<MappedFolders>
<MappedFolder>
<HostFolder>C:AgentDropInput</HostFolder>
<SandboxFolder>C:UsersWDAGUtilityAccountDesktopInput</SandboxFolder>
<ReadOnly>true</ReadOnly>
</MappedFolder>
</MappedFolders>
</Configuration>
Use a separate output mapping only when necessary, and inspect the output before moving it into a trusted project. Microsoft recommends disabling networking and mapping folders read-only when opening untrusted files.
Limits to understand
- All installed software and in-session changes disappear at close, so it cannot provide durable agent memory by itself.
- Clipboard, host-folder mappings, printers, audio, cameras, USB devices and other integrations increase convenience and reduce isolation. Enable only what the task needs.
- Networking is a session-level decision. If you enable it for package installation, consider closing that session and repeating the work in a fresh offline session afterward.
- There is no claim of perfect escape resistance. Keep Windows patched and avoid treating the sandbox as permission to open every secret on the host.
Option 2: Hyper-V or another separately managed VM
Why a VM is the stronger default for hostile, persistent work
A dedicated VM gives the agent a guest operating system and guest kernel. You can patch it, create snapshots, run several services and preserve state without exposing the host’s kernel or profile as the normal execution context. Choose this model when the agent will run continuously, process untrusted repositories, install arbitrary packages, or handle prompt-injected documents.

Build a dedicated agent VM
- Create a VM in Hyper-V or another type-1/hosted hypervisor using a clean Windows or Linux image. Keep the VM separate from personal or production machines.
- Apply operating-system and application updates before installing the agent. Create a non-administrator account for routine execution and reserve an administrator account for maintenance.
- Install only the runtime, tools and repositories required for the workflow. Record versions so you can rebuild rather than carrying unexplained changes forever.
- Start with no shared folders, clipboard redirection, drag-and-drop, USB passthrough or device access. Add one integration at a time and document its purpose.
- Use a virtual switch with the narrowest practical network policy. For offline jobs, keep the adapter disconnected. For API access, route through controlled egress and avoid exposing services to the local network.
- Take a clean snapshot after patching and validation. Revert to it after experiments that involve unknown installers or suspicious code; do not treat snapshots as a substitute for backups of valuable results.
- Centralize logs outside the VM or export them before rollback. Include agent commands, tool calls, network decisions and files copied across the boundary.
VM costs and operational duties
The separate kernel improves the clarity of the security boundary, but the VM consumes memory and storage, starts more slowly than a process container and needs its own patch cycle, backup plan, monitoring and license decisions. GPU access and hardware passthrough can be valuable for local models, yet each passthrough device expands the trust relationship and may complicate migration or recovery. If you do not have the capacity to patch and monitor a VM, a managed service may be safer operationally than an abandoned “secure” machine.
Option 3: WSL2 plus containers
What WSL2 is good at
WSL2 is an efficient Linux development layer on Windows. It is convenient for package managers, compilers, shells and container tooling, and it lets a team reproduce Linux-oriented instructions without maintaining a full desktop VM for every developer.
Why WSL2 is not the boundary
Microsoft’s WSL security documentation states: “It is not a security sandbox for running untrusted code.” WSL integrates Linux and Windows through shared features and host access paths. A container running inside WSL inherits the security properties of both the container runtime and WSL; placing a process in that container does not turn WSL into a security boundary from Windows.
Use WSL2 as a productivity layer, not as the place where you permit an autonomous agent to inspect hostile files with unrestricted host access. If separation from Windows matters, run WSL or the Linux workload inside a separately managed VM, or choose a microVM-backed service. In either case, continue to restrict mounts, credentials and network egress.
Safer WSL development practices
- Keep source trees in a dedicated directory rather than exposing the entire Windows home directory.
- Use containers with non-root users, read-only filesystems where practical and explicit bind mounts.
- Remove Windows credential helpers and cloud configuration from the agent’s environment unless a task requires them.
- Do not assume that a Docker socket, mounted drive or WSL integration grants only the permissions you intended; inspect what the agent can actually reach.
- Move production or hostile-input execution to a VM or microVM-backed sandbox.
Option 4: Docker Sandboxes
How the model differs from a normal container
Docker’s AI-focused Sandboxes run agents in microVMs. The agent can execute code, install packages and use tools while remaining separated from host resources except those you deliberately share. This makes the workflow attractive to developers who want familiar container commands and package installation without relying solely on a shared host kernel.
Audit every host integration
The microVM is only one part of the trust model. Review mounted directories, environment variables, credential helpers, forwarded ports and network permissions before each project. A read-write mount containing a source tree may also contain build secrets or deployment files. A forwarded service can be reachable by other local processes. A token injected for convenience can be exfiltrated by a compromised dependency.
Docker specifically warns that a local MCP server which starts a host process or host container uses host permissions and host isolation, not sandbox isolation. Treat such an MCP server as a privileged bridge. Prefer an MCP implementation that runs inside the sandbox, expose a narrowly scoped API, or place the server in its own restricted VM/container and review every method it offers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When Docker Sandboxes are a good middle path
- Your team already uses Docker workflows and needs package installation and code execution.
- You want stronger isolation than an ordinary shared-kernel container without hand-building a VM image for every task.
- You can inventory and constrain mounts, MCP tools, credentials and network access.
They are not a reason to grant an agent unrestricted host integration. If the workload is highly sensitive or must run continuously with complex services, compare a dedicated VM and a managed sandbox as well.

Option 5: Managed agent sandboxes
A managed sandbox can provide files, shell commands, package installation, ports, snapshots and resumable state without your team operating the local hypervisor or microVM layer. OpenAI’s agent documentation describes container-based sandboxes for these capabilities. This model is useful when reproducible execution and team access matter more than keeping every byte on a developer workstation.
Questions to answer before sending data
- Where is data processed and stored, and what retention controls apply?
- How are credentials issued, scoped, rotated and revoked?
- Can outbound traffic be disabled or restricted to approved destinations?
- Are snapshots encrypted, who can restore them, and how are they deleted?
- What logs are available for commands, files, tool calls and network activity?
- Which provider-side services, support staff or subprocessors are within the trust boundary?
- What are the usage limits and recurring costs for long-running agents?
A managed service removes local patching and VM operations, but it does not remove the need for least privilege. Treat the provider as an additional trust domain and send only the data the task requires.
Controls that matter more than the product name
Filesystem and mount policy
Start with no host mounts. Add a read-only input directory, then a separate output directory if needed. Never mount password stores, browser profiles, private keys, cloud configuration directories or the Docker/Podman control socket. Review symlinks and archive extraction paths so an apparently safe output cannot overwrite a host file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNetwork egress and inbound exposure
Offline is the safest default. For an agent that must call an API, use a proxy or firewall allow-list, restrict DNS and block private address ranges where feasible. Avoid exposing development servers to all interfaces. A port forwarded for testing should be temporary and removed before the agent processes untrusted input again.
Identity, secrets and approvals
Use separate service identities with the minimum scopes and short expirations. Keep approval gates for destructive operations such as deleting files, publishing packages, changing infrastructure or sending messages. Human approval is not a substitute for isolation, but it limits the damage from a successful prompt injection.
Tools and MCP servers
Inventory every tool the agent can call. Give each tool a narrow schema and reject unexpected paths, commands and arguments. Run high-risk tools in their own restricted namespace or container inside a VM, an approach recommended by OWASP’s Securing Agentic Applications Guide, which cites gVisor, Firecracker and Docker-in-VM as examples. A tool that launches a host process is part of the host trust domain regardless of where the agent itself runs.
GPU and device access
GPU, camera, microphone, USB and hardware passthrough may be necessary for a particular workload, but they enlarge the attack surface and can weaken portability. Do not enable them by default. If a local model needs a GPU, isolate the VM or microVM, restrict device permissions and keep sensitive host sessions off the same machine while testing untrusted code.
Logging, reset and recovery
Capture command history, tool arguments, file transfers, package changes, network destinations and approval decisions. Keep logs outside the disposable environment so an attacker cannot erase the only record. Define a reset procedure before launch: close and recreate a Windows Sandbox, revert a VM snapshot, destroy and recreate a microVM, or terminate a managed sandbox and revoke its credentials.

Decision paths for common workloads
“I need to inspect one suspicious installer.”
Use Windows Sandbox with networking disabled and a read-only mapping containing only the installer. Do not paste credentials into the session. Close the sandbox after collecting observations.
“An agent will refactor an unknown repository for several days.”
Use a dedicated VM or a microVM-backed sandbox with a separate working copy, controlled egress and no host profile mounts. Persist only the repository and reviewed artifacts; keep credentials short-lived.
“My team needs Linux tooling on Windows.”
Use WSL2 and ordinary containers for development convenience, but move untrusted or autonomous execution into a VM, Docker Sandbox or managed agent sandbox. Document that WSL2 itself is not the security boundary.
Recommended Free Tools
“The agent needs an API, a database and resumable state.”
Prefer a dedicated VM or managed sandbox that supports persistent storage and snapshots. Place the database in the same isolated trust domain or expose only a tightly scoped service account and network route.
“The agent must use an MCP server that controls my desktop.”
Do not place that server behind the label of a sandbox and assume it is contained. A local MCP server that starts host processes has host permissions. Replace it with a constrained remote interface, run it in a separately isolated VM, or require explicit approval for every sensitive operation.
Troubleshooting and failure modes
The agent cannot install a package
Check whether networking is intentionally disabled, whether the package manager needs a proxy, and whether the filesystem is read-only. Do not solve the problem by mounting your entire profile or enabling unrestricted egress. Pre-download and verify packages in a separate trusted process, or allow only the required repository through a proxy.
The agent can see files it should not
Stop the session, inventory mounts and environment variables, and recreate the environment with no inherited home directory. Check symlinks, WSL paths, Docker bind mounts and credential-helper integrations. Rotate any secret that may have been visible.
A service is reachable from the host or LAN
Remove port forwarding, bind the service to an isolated interface and review the VM or microVM virtual switch. If the service must be reachable, allow only the specific host or proxy and authenticate it separately.

A reset removed important work
That is expected for Windows Sandbox. Copy reviewed outputs to a trusted location before closing, or move the workflow to a VM or managed sandbox with explicit persistent storage and snapshots.
The environment is too slow or expensive
Reduce unnecessary services and image size, but do not downgrade the boundary solely for speed. Use Windows Sandbox for truly disposable tasks, Docker Sandboxes for repeated developer runs, and a VM or managed service when persistence and stronger isolation justify the overhead.
A minimum launch checklist
- Threat model written: inputs, commands, services, secrets and likely impact.
- Boundary selected: disposable sandbox, VM, microVM or managed service.
- No host mounts by default; required mounts are narrow and read-only where possible.
- Dedicated identity with short-lived, least-privilege credentials.
- Networking disabled or allow-listed; inbound ports closed unless required.
- MCP and other tools inventoried, with host-process bridges treated as privileged.
- GPU and device passthrough disabled unless justified.
- Logs exported outside the execution environment.
- Reset, snapshot and credential-revocation procedures tested.
- Outputs reviewed before they re-enter a trusted host or production system.
Final recommendation
For a one-off untrusted Windows program, Windows Sandbox is the simplest safe starting point because it is Hyper-V-backed and disposable. For an autonomous agent that may execute hostile code, persist state or run services, choose a separately managed Hyper-V or other VM, or a microVM-backed service such as Docker Sandboxes when its workflow fits. Keep WSL2 for Linux productivity, not containment. Whatever you choose, mounts, credentials, MCP bridges and network access define the practical blast radius.

Is WSL2 itself a virtual machine, and does that make it safe for untrusted agents?
WSL2 uses virtualization technology, but Microsoft’s security documentation explicitly says WSL is not a security sandbox for running untrusted code. Its Windows integrations and inherited permissions mean you should use a separately managed VM or microVM-backed sandbox when host separation is required.
Can I make a normal Docker container safe by running it inside WSL2?
No. The container inherits the security properties of the container runtime and WSL. A shared-kernel container inside WSL2 is still not equivalent to a guest-kernel VM; restrict mounts and network access, and move hostile workloads to a stronger boundary.
Do I need a GPU for a sandboxed coding agent?
Only if the workload runs a local model or another GPU-dependent tool. GPU passthrough increases the trust relationship and operational complexity, so leave it disabled for ordinary code execution and enable it only in an isolated environment with a clear requirement.
What should I do if an MCP tool needs to control Windows?
Treat it as a host-privileged integration. A local MCP server that starts host processes uses host permissions rather than sandbox isolation. Prefer a narrowly scoped remote interface or run the server in its own restricted VM, with explicit approval for destructive actions.
