Yes—NFC is only one option. Products can use serialized QR or Data Matrix codes, security holograms, copy-detection patterns, covert inks and tracers, tamper-evident labels, digital watermarks, RFID, or electronic seals. The strongest programs layer at least two controls: a feature that is difficult to copy, a per-unit identity that can be checked or revoked, and packaging evidence that reveals opening or replacement.

What to use instead of NFC for anti-counterfeiting

Choose the technology according to the threat you need to control. A factory producing look-alike packaging has a different problem from a distributor that needs to detect diversion, and both differ from a consumer who wants a quick authenticity check with a phone. EUIPO’s technology map groups the main alternatives into machine-readable codes, security holograms, inks, watermarks, microtexts, copy-detection patterns, mechanical labels and seals, chemical or DNA coding, surface analysis and other electronic methods.

No single printed mark proves that a product is genuine in every situation. A static code can be copied, a visible hologram can be imitated, and a tamper seal can be transferred to another package. Treat anti-counterfeiting as a system with separate jobs:

  • Identity: a unique identifier for each unit, batch or case.
  • Copy resistance: a feature that is hard to reproduce with ordinary printing, scanning or photography.
  • Tamper evidence: a visible or machine-readable indication that a package was opened, refilled or replaced.
  • Verification: a reader, process and decision rule for accepting, rejecting or escalating an item.
  • Traceability: event data that shows where an item was produced, shipped and scanned.

For a phone-based program, serialized 2D codes or digital watermarks may be the practical starting point. For covert inspection, security inks, tracers or copy-detection patterns add another layer. For package integrity, use a destructible or void label. For automated supply-chain visibility, RFID or electronic seals may be more appropriate, although they remain chip-based technologies rather than chip-free replacements.

Serialized QR and Data Matrix codes

Why they are attractive

Two-dimensional codes are inexpensive to print and work with common phone cameras or existing industrial scanners. A unique identifier can represent every bottle, carton, document or spare part, allowing a database to record production, shipment, sale and verification events. Data Matrix is often useful where label area is small; QR codes are familiar to consumers and can carry a web address or a larger payload.

Why a static code fails

A code that always opens the same public webpage is easy to photograph and reprint. Even a unique code can be copied from a genuine package and attached to counterfeits unless the system can identify abnormal reuse. The code therefore identifies a record; it does not, by itself, prove the physical item is authentic.

How to deploy codes as an authentication layer

  1. Create unpredictable identifiers: generate a cryptographically strong serial for each saleable unit, and keep the mapping in a controlled system.
  2. Bind the serial to signed data: use a digital signature or server-side validation so an attacker cannot edit the product, batch or destination fields without detection.
  3. Record lifecycle events: log commissioning, packing, shipment, sale, return and each verification attempt.
  4. Detect reuse: flag the same serial appearing in distant locations, at impossible times, or far more often than the expected number of checks.
  5. Add a physical second factor: pair the code with a hologram, copy-detection pattern, covert ink or tamper-evident construction.
  6. Define offline behavior: decide whether a scanner can perform a limited signature check without connectivity and how an offline result is reconciled later.

Tell users what a result means. “Code recognized” may mean only that the identifier exists; “genuine” should require the physical feature and the event history to pass the policy you set.

Security holograms

Holograms provide an immediate visual signal on a label, carton or closure. Traditional and complex holograms can use changing images, fine lines, optical effects and hidden information. EUIPO describes complex holograms as containing hidden information, or “cryptograms,” in addition to the visible image, creating two authentication layers: a public check and a controlled inspection.

A hologram works best when the design is specific to your organization, manufactured under tight controls and changed when a design is compromised. Include serialisation or a database reference if you need item-level traceability. Add a destructible or void construction when opening the package is itself a risk. A generic foil sticker with a familiar rainbow effect is a deterrent, not reliable proof; counterfeiters can source or imitate common designs.

Document the inspection method for staff and consumers: viewing angle, expected image changes, hidden text or other authorized features. Keep sensitive inspection details out of public instructions when revealing them would help a counterfeiter.

Copy-detection patterns and secure graphics

Copy-detection patterns are small random or pseudo-random images printed on a product, package or document. Their design intentionally maximizes the information lost during printing, scanning or photographing. Image-analysis software compares a captured pattern with a reference and can identify degradation that a conventional copy would introduce.

This approach gives a brand a printed, camera-readable feature without embedding a chip. It is useful when the label already has artwork and when a phone or inspection camera is available. The pattern should be linked to a serial or batch record, and the acceptance threshold should be validated for the actual substrate, varnish, printer, lighting and camera range. A pattern printed too small, blurred by finishing, or repeatedly compressed by an online image workflow may produce false rejects; establish an escalation path rather than treating every failed scan as proof of fraud.

Security inks, invisible tracers and chemical or DNA coding

Ink families

UV-, infrared-, thermochromic-, magnetic- and reactive-ink systems can create overt or covert marks. Some are visible only under a specified light or temperature; others respond to a chemical reagent or magnetic detector. They can be printed as text, patterns, fibers or registration marks and used as a second factor alongside a serial code.

Tracers and DNA coding

EUIPO describes chemical and physical tracers as minute particles with distinctive properties that may be invisible and require special equipment. DNA coding is another covert method in which a material marker is associated with a product, batch or source. These methods are appropriate when ordinary visual inspection is insufficient, but they require a reference sample, authorized test procedure, chain-of-custody records and supplier controls. Decide who is allowed to test, how samples are taken without damaging saleable goods, and what result is sufficient for seizure or further investigation.

What a UV light can and cannot do

A UV inspection light is a task-enabling tool, not an authentication system by itself. Anyone can buy a light, and a counterfeit can include a visible fluorescent graphic. The security comes from the controlled ink formulation, the exact mark, the inspection conditions and the confidential reference used by the verifier.

Tamper-evident labels, seals and anti-alteration devices

Void labels, destructible labels, security threads, films, seals and anti-refill or anti-alteration devices address a different question: has this package been opened, replaced, refilled or modified? A label that leaves “VOID,” fragments when lifted, breaks a thread or changes appearance can protect a closure and expose interference during shipping or sale.

These controls primarily establish package integrity. An intact seal does not prove that the contents are chemically genuine, and a replaced seal may be difficult to detect if the package design permits it. Pair the seal with a unique code, covert mark, hologram or copy-detection pattern. Specify the substrate, adhesive, application pressure, storage conditions and expected failure mode; an adhesive that lifts in heat or humidity can create both false alarms and exploitable gaps.

Digital watermarks and serialized watermarked labels

Digital watermarks embed covert, machine-verifiable information in printed artwork or a label. A scanning application can look for the watermark across ordinary design elements rather than requiring a conspicuous symbol. Serialization links each encoded label to a record, while an optional QR code can provide a visible entry point for users who do not have watermark-aware software.

On September 17, 2025, Digimarc announced a label approach describing encrypted covert watermarks, optional QR codes, two-factor scanning and serialization for applications including over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, spirits, health and beauty products and automotive products. Digimarc CEO Riley McCormack said, “Labels have always been an easy and affordable security option, but traditional foils and holograms can no longer be trusted as any evidence that a product is real or hasn’t been tampered with.” This is a vendor statement, not an independent performance test.

Before selecting a watermark system, confirm which phones and operating systems can detect it, whether verification works offline, how artwork changes affect detection, who controls the encryption keys, and how compromised serials are revoked. Pair the watermark with a tamper feature when package opening matters; a covert digital mark does not automatically reveal physical interference.

RFID and electronic seals when the need is supply-chain visibility

Passive or active RFID can identify cases, pallets or individual products without line-of-sight scanning. Electronic seals can record product and route information, provide real-time monitoring and trigger alarms when tampering occurs. These capabilities are valuable for warehouses, transit lanes and regulated distribution where automated reads matter more than a consumer phone tap.

RFID still requires tags, readers, antenna placement, middleware and a data platform, so it is not a chip-free alternative to NFC. Evaluate read range, metal or liquid interference, tag attachment, reader coverage, battery life for active devices and the process for investigating an alarm. If consumers must authenticate at retail, combine the logistics identifier with a phone-readable code or visible feature rather than assuming a supply-chain read is a consumer proof of authenticity.

How to choose an anti-counterfeit technology

1. Define the attack and the decision

List the likely attack: reprinted packaging, cloned serials, refilled containers, diverted goods, substituted components, or forged documents. Then define the decision the verifier must make: release, quarantine, refund, investigate or destroy. A technology that detects a copied label may not identify a substituted chemical, and a tamper seal may not detect a perfectly repackaged counterfeit.

2. Separate copy resistance from tamper evidence

Ask two independent questions: can an attacker reproduce the mark, and can an attacker open or replace the package without leaving evidence? Select one control for each risk when both matter.

3. Decide the identity granularity

Batch numbers support recalls but allow many units to share one identity. Per-unit serialization supports scan histories and revocation but requires issuance, commissioning and exception handling. Case- and pallet-level identities can improve logistics while leaving the individual item unprotected; choose the level that matches the loss and regulatory exposure.

4. Choose the reader and operating environment

  • Naked eye: simplest deployment, but vulnerable to imitation and subjective judgment.
  • Phone camera: broad reach, but dependent on lighting, software, connectivity and user behavior.
  • Industrial scanner: fast and repeatable on a line, with equipment and integration costs.
  • UV, IR or magnetic detector: stronger covert inspection, requiring trained personnel and controlled devices.
  • Specialist laboratory equipment: appropriate for high-assurance investigations, not routine consumer checks.

5. Plan connectivity, privacy and data governance

A server can revoke identifiers, detect geographic reuse and update risk rules, but outages and data-protection obligations must be handled. Define what is stored, how long scan events are retained, who can see location or customer data, and what an offline verifier should display. Signed data can support a limited offline check, but it cannot provide current revocation or reuse intelligence without a later connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check materials and production constraints

Test adhesion, abrasion, solvents, moisture, heat, freezing, flexing, UV exposure and contact with the product. Confirm that the mark survives filling, labeling, shipping and consumer handling. Reserve enough quiet area for a code or pattern, and verify that varnish, foil, curvature and transparent films do not interfere with reading.

7. Price the whole operating system

Unit cost is only one element. Include artwork and plate changes, variable-data printing, serialization software, key management, readers or lights, line-speed impact, database hosting, training, inspections, customer support, recalls and investigation. A low-cost printed code can become expensive if every suspicious scan requires manual review; a specialist tracer can be economical for a high-value product despite its laboratory workflow.

ISO 22383:2020 provides guidelines for performance criteria and evaluation of authentication solutions across a material good’s life cycle. Use it as an evaluation framework rather than as proof that one technology is universally superior.

A practical layered rollout

  1. Map the product flow: document manufacture, packing, distribution, sale, returns and disposal, including points where packages can be opened or substituted.
  2. Set the threat model: rank likely counterfeit methods, attacker access to artwork or labels, and the financial or safety consequence of a false acceptance.
  3. Select a primary identity: choose per-unit, batch, case or pallet serialization and define who can issue and revoke identifiers.
  4. Add a second physical feature: select a hologram, copy-detection pattern, covert ink, tracer or watermark that is difficult to reproduce with the expected attacker’s tools.
  5. Add package integrity where needed: apply a void, destructible or other tamper-evident construction to closures and refill-prone containers.
  6. Build verification rules: specify what each scan checks, how suspicious reuse is flagged, and when staff escalate to an investigation.
  7. Pilot on production material: test print variation, lighting, wear, network outages, legitimate returns and intentionally copied samples before broad release.
  8. Train every verifier: provide the exact viewing, scanning or sampling procedure and examples of pass, fail, inconclusive and tampered conditions.
  9. Monitor and update: review rejected scans, false positives, supplier changes and design compromise; rotate exposed visual features and revoke compromised serial ranges.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • “The QR code says genuine, so the product is genuine.” A copied code can produce that result. Require a unique serial, server-side reuse detection and a physical second factor.
  • One hologram design is used forever. Once the design is copied, the visual deterrent weakens. Use controlled variants, hidden features and serialization, and change the design when exposure is suspected.
  • The tamper label is treated as a content test. It reports package interference, not chemical identity. Pair it with an authenticity feature appropriate to the contents.
  • Covert ink is deployed without an inspection procedure. Specify the light or detector, angle, distance, reference mark, pass criteria and equipment calibration.
  • Offline scans are ignored. Define a safe offline result, queue events for later upload and prevent an outage from automatically approving high-risk items.
  • Serialization is issued but not governed. Restrict key and identifier creation, reconcile unused ranges, revoke returned or destroyed units and audit every administrative change.
  • Packaging changes break the feature. Revalidate codes, patterns, watermarks and inks after substrate, varnish, printer, supplier or artwork changes.
  • Readers are harder to use than the product line allows. Measure scan time, training burden, battery or network dependence and the escalation workload before committing to a specialist method.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

EUIPO’s guide is a taxonomy and feature reference; it explains categories such as machine-readable codes, holograms, copy-detection patterns, tracers and electronic seals, and compares dimensions including whether a reading device or server connection is needed. ISO 22383:2020 supplies a way to define performance criteria and evaluate a solution over the product life cycle. Neither establishes a universal numeric success rate or cost ranking for all NFC alternatives.

Vendor announcements can describe a product’s architecture and intended applications, but marketing performance language is not an independent comparative test. Demand pilot evidence from your own substrate, supply chain and attack scenarios: legitimate and counterfeit samples, copied serials, opened packages, damaged labels, poor lighting and network outages. Record false accepts, false rejects, time to decision and investigation effort before scaling.

Decision checklist

  • What counterfeit or tampering event are you trying to detect?
  • Does the solution identify each item, only a batch, or only a package?
  • Can an attacker photograph, scan, source or reprint the feature?
  • What physical evidence survives opening, refilling and relabeling?
  • Who will read it, with which device, under what lighting and connectivity?
  • Can identifiers be revoked, and can reused or geographically impossible scans be flagged?
  • What happens during an outage, a failed scan or an inconclusive laboratory result?
  • Will the mark survive your materials, finishing, storage and distribution conditions?
  • Who controls artwork, encryption keys, tracer formulations and unused serial ranges?
  • How will you measure false accepts, false rejects, operating time and total cost?
