The strongest alternatives to an AI-powered caregiver-training app are a structured, evidence-informed course; live or recorded classes; a moderated peer group; professional counseling or care navigation; and a vetted local program. Use practical technology—shared calendars, safety devices or online communities—as a supplement for coordination and respite, not as a replacement for clinical advice or human support.
Why human-led alternatives matter
Family caregiving is often long, complex and delivered at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2024 that about 80% of adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias receive care in their homes. More than 11 million U.S. adults provide unpaid care for someone with dementia, and caregivers supplied about 18.4 billion hours of dementia care in 2023. Nearly one in three family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia provides care for at least four years.
Those conditions create training needs that a conversational app may not meet: learning a sequence of skills, asking follow-up questions of a qualified person, adapting advice to a changing situation, finding respite and navigating local services. A useful replacement does not have to be a single product. Most caregivers do better with a layered plan that combines education, human support and carefully selected tools.
Compare the main alternatives
| Alternative | Format and structure | Human support | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structured evidence-informed course | Defined lessons; Dementia Dialogues is a free, five-module course covering dementia signs, communication, problem-solving and behavioral or emotional challenges. | Instruction follows a curriculum rather than open-ended prompts. | Caregivers who want a complete foundation and a sequence they can revisit. |
| Live or recorded education | Webinars, recorded video, the Caregiver College series and podcasts. | Live sessions can include questions and accountability; recordings are self-paced. | People balancing work shifts, unpredictable care or limited travel. |
| Facilitated peer-support group | Local meetings, live virtual groups or private discussion communities. | A trained moderator and shared caregiver experience. | Caregivers seeking emotional support, practical ideas and local knowledge. |
| Professional counseling or care navigation | Telephone counseling, individual or family counseling, clinical education and navigation. | Social workers, clinicians or trained navigators can assess needs and make referrals. | Situations involving distress, safety concerns, family conflict or complex services. |
| Vetted local program | In-person, online or telephone services located through a directory and ZIP-code search. | Depends on the selected program; outcomes and enrollment information can be reviewed before contacting it. | Caregivers who need help matched to location, condition, schedule or intensity. |
| Self-directed planning and technology | Shared schedules, family-locator tools, GPS trackers, medical-alert devices, fall detection, online communities and short-break entertainment. | Tools do not teach clinical care by themselves; a clinician can help select safety equipment. | Coordinating relatives, improving safety or creating brief respite after core training is in place. |
1. Take a structured, evidence-informed course
A structured course is the closest substitute for a training app when you want a defined curriculum instead of a stream of answers. Lessons build on one another, give you a vocabulary for describing symptoms and provide a checklist of skills to practice.

Dementia Dialogues
The CDC describes Dementia Dialogues as “a free, 5-module, evidence-informed nationally registered training course.” Its modules address signs and symptoms of dementia, communication barriers and strategies, creative problem-solving, and behavioral and emotional challenges. That scope makes it useful for a new caregiver who needs a broad orientation or for a family that wants everyone working from the same basic framework.
Use each module actively rather than treating it as passive viewing. Write down the person’s recurring situations—bathing refusal, medication confusion, unsafe wandering or an escalating argument—and map the lesson’s communication or problem-solving strategy to one of them. Discuss the plan with other family members so that responses are consistent. When a lesson raises a medical question, take that question to the person’s clinician rather than treating the course as a diagnosis or treatment plan.
How to judge another course
- Look for named authors, clinicians or sponsoring organizations and an evidence-informed curriculum.
- Check when lessons were last updated, especially for medication, safety or eligibility information.
- Confirm whether the course addresses the condition you are facing, not dementia in general when the need is Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery or another diagnosis.
- Check captions, transcripts, language options, screen-reader compatibility and downloadable materials.
- Find out whether you can ask questions, receive feedback or obtain referrals when a problem exceeds the course’s scope.
2. Use live or recorded education
Family Caregiver Alliance identifies webinars, recorded video, the Caregiver College video series and caregiving podcasts as ways to learn on your own schedule. This is a practical choice when a fixed weekly class is unrealistic.

When live sessions are better
Choose a live webinar when you need to describe a specific situation, hear questions from other families or create accountability for completing practice between sessions. Before registering, check the presenter’s qualifications, the session’s condition focus, accessibility features and the date of the material. A live question period is educational; it does not turn a general webinar into a private clinical consultation.
When recordings are better
Recorded lessons work well for shift workers, caregivers who cannot leave the person alone and families whose schedules change daily. Break a long session into short viewing blocks and keep a single notes page with three headings: “try this,” “ask the clinician” and “need local help.” Revisit the relevant segment after a new symptom or care transition instead of starting an unrelated search each time.

Verify quality before relying on a video
- Identify the presenter and their professional role.
- Look for a publication or update date and prefer material that explains when recommendations may change.
- Check whether the advice is condition-specific and culturally appropriate for your family.
- Use captions or transcripts if hearing, language or concentration makes audio-only learning difficult.
- Separate general education from instructions that require an assessment, such as changing medication, restricting movement or evaluating a fall.
3. Join a facilitated peer-support group
Peer groups offer something an app cannot: sustained contact with people who understand the emotional and logistical reality of caregiving. Members often share practical local knowledge about transportation, adult day services, respite, home modifications and difficult conversations with relatives.
Choose moderation over an unbounded chat
AARP recommends asking about a group’s content and focus, what to expect and the facilitator’s training. A moderated group should explain confidentiality expectations, prohibit harassment and make clear that members are not providing diagnoses or medication instructions. It should also have a referral path for emergencies, abuse concerns, suicidal thoughts, severe behavioral changes or questions that require a clinician.
Available formats
AARP offers free live virtual caregiver-support groups and a private Family Caregivers Discussion Group. Local groups may meet in a community center, clinic or faith-based setting. Virtual meetings remove travel barriers, while in-person groups can make it easier to exchange local service information. Try more than one meeting if the first group’s condition focus, language or stage of caregiving does not match your needs.
Protect privacy
Share only the minimum personal information needed to explain a situation. Avoid posting names, addresses, medical-record numbers, photographs or details that could identify the person receiving care. Ask how recordings, transcripts and membership lists are handled before turning on a camera or joining a private online community.
4. Get professional counseling, care navigation and clinical education
Professional help is the right alternative when the issue is not simply “What should I learn?” but “How do I make a safe plan for this family?” The CDC’s public-health strategy includes caregiver education and skills training, telephone counseling by social workers, individual or family counseling and peer support among enhanced services.

Telephone counseling
A social worker can help you describe the problem, identify immediate risks, clarify what each family member can do and locate services. Prepare a short timeline, a medication list, recent changes in behavior, current supports and the questions you need answered. Ask what follow-up is available and what situations require emergency help rather than another counseling call.

Caregiving can produce grief, anger, sleep loss, guilt and conflict over money or responsibilities. Individual counseling provides a confidential place to work on coping and boundaries. Family counseling can establish a shared plan for visits, decisions, communication and escalation when one person is carrying most of the work. Counseling does not replace medical evaluation when there is a sudden change in cognition, mood, mobility or consciousness.
Care navigation and the CMS GUIDE model
AARP’s description of the CMS GUIDE model includes care navigation, access to a 24/7 support line, family caregiver training and education, respite services of up to $2,500 annually and connections to community resources. The model began in July 2024. Availability depends on eligibility, geography and participating providers, so ask a local health plan, clinician or aging-services organization whether a participating provider serves your family and what the current requirements are.
5. Find a local program through a vetted directory
When you need a service rather than general information, a directory can shorten the search. Family Caregiver Alliance and its partners’ Best Programs for Caregiving is a free directory with details about nearly 50 top-rated dementia-support programs. You can search by ZIP code for in-person, online or telephone options and review program outcomes and enrollment information.
Search with a specific brief
Before opening a directory, write down the condition, ZIP code, preferred language, meeting format, available times, urgency, transportation limits and the kind of help required. “Dementia support” is broad; “evening virtual group for a spouse caring for someone with Lewy body dementia” produces a more useful search.

Questions to ask a program
- Who is eligible, and is a diagnosis or referral required?
- What does enrollment include: education, counseling, navigation, respite or only information?
- Are sessions live, recorded, telephone-based or in person?
- What languages, captions, interpreters and disability accommodations are available?
- How are outcomes measured, and when was the program information last updated?
- What happens if the situation becomes urgent or falls outside the program’s expertise?
6. Add self-directed planning and practical technology
Technology can reduce coordination work and create brief breaks, but it is not a training substitute. Family Caregiver Alliance describes shared schedules, family-locator tools, GPS trackers, medical-alert devices, fall-detection watches, online communities, meditation apps, streaming services and audiobook apps as possible supports.
Coordination tools
A shared schedule can show appointments, meals, transportation, bathing help and overnight coverage. Give each relative a defined responsibility and record completion rather than relying on a group text. Family-locator tools can help coordinate visits, but everyone using them should understand who can see location data and how to disable access.
Safety devices
Discuss GPS trackers, medical-alert devices and fall detection with the person’s clinician when possible. Test the device in the actual home and outside it. Confirm battery life, cellular coverage, who receives alerts, the response process, language support and what happens during a false alarm. A device that sends an alert nobody monitors is not a safety plan.
Respite and restorative tools
Online communities, meditation apps, streaming services and audiobooks can provide short breaks while another trusted adult is present or the person is safely settled. They should not be used to leave someone who needs supervision unattended. Check privacy settings, subscription terms and whether the person can use the service without frustration.

Use this sequence when deciding what to try first:
- Identify the immediate risk. If there is a medical emergency, imminent danger, abuse, a missing person or a sudden severe change, contact emergency or clinical services rather than starting a course or forum discussion.
- Name the skill gap. Choose one priority such as communication, transfers, medication organization, incontinence care, wandering prevention, sleep disruption or family coordination.
- Match the learning format. Select a structured course for a foundation, a live session for questions, a recording for an unpredictable schedule, or professional counseling for a situation involving distress or complex decisions.
- Check qualifications and boundaries. Confirm who created the material, what it covers, how current it is and where it refers caregivers for clinical advice.
- Add peer support. Join a moderated group that matches the condition, language, caregiving stage and meeting schedule.
- Locate services. Use a vetted directory or care navigator for respite, transportation, adult day care, home services and benefits.
- Add technology only for a defined job. Choose a calendar, alert device or respite tool after checking privacy, usability, coverage and monitoring.
- Review the plan regularly. Reassess after a hospitalization, diagnosis change, fall, move, new medication, sleep crisis or loss of caregiver availability.
How to evaluate any alternative to an AI app
Use the following checklist before investing time or sharing sensitive information:

- Evidence and curriculum: Is there a coherent sequence, named expertise and a clear distinction between education and medical advice?
- Human interaction: Can you ask a qualified person a question, and is there a referral route for issues outside the program’s scope?
- Delivery: Is it local, online, telephone-based, live or recorded, and does that match the hours you actually have?
- Cost and eligibility: Is it free, covered, grant-funded or fee-based? Are there geographic, insurance, diagnosis or referral requirements?
- Condition and cultural relevance: Does it address the person’s diagnosis, language, family structure and care setting?
- Accessibility: Are captions, transcripts, interpreters, large print, accessible websites and disability accommodations available?
- Privacy: What personal information is collected, who can view it, whether sessions are recorded and how data can be deleted?
- Follow-up: Can the program provide navigation, respite, check-ins or a warm referral instead of ending after one lesson?
Build a layered plan for common situations
You are new to dementia caregiving
Begin with the five-module Dementia Dialogues course or another evidence-informed curriculum. Add one moderated peer group and schedule a clinician appointment to discuss the person’s specific symptoms, medications and safety risks. Use a shared calendar only after responsibilities are clearly assigned.
You work shifts or provide care at unpredictable times
Start with recorded videos or podcasts and keep a running question list for a live webinar or clinician call. A virtual peer group may be easier than a local meeting. Select tools that work asynchronously, such as a shared schedule with reminders and a monitored alert device if the clinician agrees.
The family is overwhelmed or in conflict
Prioritize social-work counseling, family counseling or care navigation. Bring a written list of tasks, missed coverage and urgent decisions. A peer group can reduce isolation, but it should supplement—not replace—professional help when safety, capacity or conflict is severe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You need respite and local services
Search the Best Programs for Caregiving directory by ZIP code and ask each program about eligibility, enrollment and respite. If the family may qualify for the CMS GUIDE model, ask a participating provider about navigation, the 24/7 support line, caregiver education and the potential annual respite benefit of up to $2,500.
What these alternatives cannot do
No course, group, directory or device can assess every medical change in the home. Do not use peer advice or a checklist to alter prescriptions, diagnose delirium, decide that a fall is harmless, restrain someone, or ignore signs of abuse or immediate danger. Contact the appropriate clinician or emergency service for those decisions. The purpose of a human-led alternative is to improve skills, judgment, connection and access to services while keeping clinical decisions with qualified professionals.
Bottom line
For most family caregivers, the best replacement for AI-powered training is a combination: begin with an evidence-informed course, use live or recorded education to fill a specific skill gap, join a moderated peer group, and involve a social worker, counselor, navigator or clinician when the situation is complex. Use a vetted directory to find local help, then add privacy-conscious technology for coordination, safety or short respite. This layered approach provides structure and human judgment without pretending that a digital tool can replace care expertise.
