For most new VPS deployments in 2026, choose AlmaLinux 9. It is the mature middle release with a broad Enterprise Linux 9 (EL9) software ecosystem and a longer support runway than AlmaLinux 8, without the hardware, image, and control-panel checks that AlmaLinux 10 still requires. Use AlmaLinux 8 when an existing workload is tied to EL8 packages or vendor support. Choose AlmaLinux 10 for a new deployment only after your provider, CPU architecture, panel, kernel modules, repositories, and applications have all been verified.

Quick decision: which AlmaLinux release fits your VPS?

Release Support information available in 2026 Best fit Main reservation
AlmaLinux 8 AlmaLinux OS Foundation FAQ lists 8.x through 2029. An existing, stable VPS that still requires EL8 packages, a panel, or a vendor integration. It has the shortest remaining runway, so a new long-lived server will need a major-version migration sooner.
AlmaLinux 9 The FAQ lists 9.x through 2032; the 9-versus-10 comparison lists security support through 2032-05-31. Most new general-purpose VPSs, production web servers, databases, and application hosts. It is not the newest release, so a workload that specifically requires an EL10 feature may need a different choice.
AlmaLinux 10 The 9-versus-10 comparison lists security support through 2035-05-31. AlmaLinux 10.0 was released on 2025-05-27. New deployments whose provider image, CPU, control panel, repositories, and software stack have been validated for EL10. The default x86-64-v3 optimized build and newer ecosystem can expose compatibility gaps on older VPS platforms.

The dates above are planning figures from AlmaLinux documentation accessed in 2026. Check the current AlmaLinux lifecycle pages and your provider’s image catalog when you schedule a deployment or migration.

Why the major version matters on a VPS

AlmaLinux follows the Enterprise Linux model: each major release establishes a package, kernel, userspace, and application-programming-interface baseline that remains stable for years. A VPS provider’s image, control panel, backup agent, kernel modules, monitoring tools, and third-party repositories must all be built or tested against that baseline.

Security updates are only one part of the decision. A release with a longer runway can postpone a disruptive migration, but a newer release may change CPU requirements or remove packages that your application expects. Conversely, staying on an older release can preserve compatibility today while creating a larger migration project later.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AlmaLinux states that it provides security updates and bug fixes for 10 years for each major version. That commitment applies at the major-release level; minor versions are not permanent targets. When the next minor version is released, the previous minor version reaches end of life, so the server must be updated within its major series.

AlmaLinux 8: keep it for compatibility, not as a default

When AlmaLinux 8 is the right choice

  • You already run a production VPS on EL8 and the application is stable.
  • A vendor formally supports only EL8 packages or libraries.
  • Your control panel, kernel module, backup agent, or monitoring integration has not been certified for EL9 or EL10.
  • You need to match an existing fleet whose deployment and rollback procedures are built around EL8.

For these cases, remaining on AlmaLinux 8 can be less risky than forcing an immediate major-version change. Record the dependency that requires EL8, assign an owner, and set a migration deadline well before the release leaves support.

Why a new VPS should rarely start on 8

AlmaLinux 8.x has the shortest support horizon in this comparison. A new server placed on it in 2026 consumes part of its useful life before the application is even deployed, increasing the chance that you will have to perform a major upgrade during the service’s normal operating period.

Do not treat an available provider image as proof that the image is a good long-term choice. Providers may retain older images for compatibility while their control-panel plugins, repository mirrors, and support policies move on. Confirm the provider’s maintenance policy and the software vendor’s EL8 statement before selecting 8 for a fresh build.

AlmaLinux 9: the practical default for most new VPSs

Why 9 is the middle-ground release

AlmaLinux 9 combines a mature EL9 userspace with a longer support runway than 8. In 2026 it is generally the least surprising target for common VPS workloads: web and API servers, application runtimes, databases, mail systems, containers, and internal services that use mainstream EL9 packages.

The practical advantage is operational familiarity. Providers, panel vendors, repository maintainers, and administrators have had time to publish images, fix integration issues, and document upgrade paths. That does not guarantee compatibility for every product, but it reduces the number of unknowns you must resolve before production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose 9 when these checks are positive

  • Your provider offers a maintained AlmaLinux 9 image in the required region and CPU architecture.
  • Your control panel and its extensions list EL9 support.
  • Every required repository has an EL9 channel, and its signing keys and metadata are available.
  • Your application vendor supports the libraries and runtime versions shipped for EL9.
  • You do not need a feature that is available only in EL10.

If those conditions are met, AlmaLinux 9 is the sensible starting point even when AlmaLinux 10 is technically available. It leaves more time to plan the next major-version migration while avoiding the shortest runway of 8.

AlmaLinux 10: the forward-looking option with extra validation

What is different about 10

AlmaLinux 10.0 was released on 2025-05-27. The release-history documentation says its default optimized binaries target x86-64-v3; an x86_64_v2 build is also available. This distinction matters on VPSs because the virtual CPU presented by a provider may not expose every instruction set required by the default image.

The longer planning horizon is attractive for a new service that you expect to keep for many years. However, a support date does not make an image deployable. You still need a provider image for the exact architecture, a bootable kernel and modules, a compatible panel, and working repositories for every component in your stack.

When 10 makes sense

  • You are building a new service and want the newest major release rather than the most mature ecosystem.
  • Your provider explicitly documents AlmaLinux 10 support for the VPS family and region you will use.
  • The VPS CPU meets the image’s x86-64-v3 requirement, or you have deliberately selected the x86_64_v2 build.
  • Your panel, security software, storage drivers, monitoring agents, and application vendors support EL10.
  • You have a tested backup and rollback plan if a dependency fails after deployment.

When to postpone 10

Stay with 9 if the provider’s image catalog is unclear, if a required panel extension has no EL10 statement, if a third-party repository publishes only EL8 or EL9 packages, or if a proprietary kernel module has not been rebuilt. A longer support runway is not worth an avoidable outage at initial launch.

Comparison across the decisions that affect a VPS

Decision area AlmaLinux 8 AlmaLinux 9 AlmaLinux 10
Remaining support runway Shortest; FAQ lists 8.x through 2029. FAQ lists 9.x through 2032; security-support comparison date is 2032-05-31. Security-support comparison date is 2035-05-31.
Provider image availability Often retained for legacy workloads; verify whether the image is still maintained. Usually the safest mature target when a provider offers a current image. Must be confirmed for the exact provider, region, plan, and architecture.
CPU architecture Use the architecture supported by the provider’s EL8 image. Use the architecture listed for the provider’s EL9 image. Default optimized build is x86-64-v3; x86_64_v2 is available, with additional migration conditions.
Application and panel compatibility Strongest for software that has not moved beyond EL8. Broad EL9 ecosystem and generally mature integrations. Check every panel, plugin, agent, module, and runtime before deployment.
Third-party repositories Legacy channels may exist but can have a shorter maintenance life. Commonly available for mainstream server software; verify each repository. Availability varies by project; do not assume an EL9 repository is compatible.
Kernel and userspace maturity Most established, but aging. Mature and familiar for production operations. Newest baseline; validate drivers, modules, and operational tooling.
Next major-version migration Likely to arrive first among the three choices. Deferred relative to 8 while remaining less experimental than 10. Farthest away in the current planning window, but early adoption can require more qualification work.

How to verify that your VPS provider can run the release

Provider compatibility is more specific than “supports AlmaLinux.” Perform these checks for the exact plan, region, and image you intend to use.

  1. Confirm the image name and architecture. The control panel should identify AlmaLinux 8, 9, or 10 and the architecture of the image. For AlmaLinux 10, ask whether the image is x86-64-v3 or x86_64_v2.
  2. Check the virtual CPU feature set. Review the provider’s documentation for the CPU baseline. On an existing Linux VPS, uname -m identifies the machine architecture and lscpu shows the virtual CPU flags, but provider confirmation is still needed for image-level support.
  3. Verify console and recovery access. Ensure the provider supplies an out-of-band console, rescue mode, or snapshot restore path. You need a way to recover if a kernel, bootloader, or module change prevents SSH access.
  4. Check storage and network drivers. Confirm that the image includes drivers for the provider’s virtual disk and network devices and that cloud-init or the provider’s initialization agent is supported.
  5. Review panel and add-on support. Obtain a version-specific statement for your control panel, firewall integration, backup agent, monitoring agent, and any proprietary kernel module.
  6. Check image maintenance. Find out who publishes updates, how quickly new minor versions appear, and whether the provider permits in-place major upgrades or expects a rebuild.

If any answer is “not stated,” treat the release as unverified rather than assuming that a generic AlmaLinux image will work.

Application, control-panel, and repository compatibility

Build an inventory before choosing

  • Operating-system packages installed directly or through a configuration-management system.
  • Language runtimes, database servers, web servers, and container engines.
  • Control-panel version, extensions, scheduled jobs, and licensing components.
  • Third-party repositories, internal mirrors, signing keys, and pinned package versions.
  • Kernel modules for storage, networking, security, filesystems, or virtualization.
  • Backup, monitoring, endpoint-security, and log-shipping agents.

For each item, record the vendor’s supported major releases and the exact repository channel. A package built for EL9 is not automatically a supported EL10 package, and a binary that installs may still fail at runtime if a library or kernel interface changed.

Separate “installs” from “supported”

A successful package installation proves only that dependencies could be resolved at that moment. Production support requires a vendor statement, a tested upgrade path, and a recovery procedure. This distinction is particularly important for control panels and kernel modules, which can depend on boot behavior and low-level interfaces rather than only userspace libraries.

Planning an AlmaLinux 8-to-9 or 9-to-10 upgrade

AlmaLinux documents ELevate as a one-step in-place major-version upgrade path between EL8, EL9, and EL10. The ELevate documentation specifies that EL10 upgrades on x86_64_v2 are supported only by ELevate NG. An in-place path reduces rebuild work, but it does not remove application or provider risk.

Pre-upgrade checklist

  1. Confirm the target path. Decide whether the server will move from 8 to 9 or from 9 to 10, and verify that your current architecture and target image meet the documented conditions.
  2. Test a restorable backup. Restore a recent backup to an isolated VPS or equivalent environment. A snapshot that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
  3. Capture provider recovery options. Verify console access, rescue mode, snapshots, bootloader recovery, and the process for attaching the disk to another instance if the upgraded system does not boot.
  4. Audit repositories. Disable or replace repositories that lack a supported target channel. Preserve configuration and signing-key information so you can re-enable the correct channels after the upgrade.
  5. Check panels and modules. Obtain explicit support statements for the control panel, extensions, backup tools, security agents, and kernel modules.
  6. Clone the application stack. Perform the upgrade on a non-production copy, then run application tests, background jobs, database migrations, TLS termination, file uploads, and monitoring checks.
  7. Define a rollback decision. Set a maintenance window, success criteria, and a time limit after which you will restore the backup instead of troubleshooting indefinitely on the live system.

During and after the upgrade

Follow the current ELevate documentation for the exact procedure and package prerequisites; the required commands and checks can change. Keep the provider console available while the system reboots. Afterward, verify the running release, kernel, network interfaces, storage mounts, firewall rules, scheduled jobs, panel services, repository metadata, backups, monitoring, and the application itself.

Deployment workflow for a new VPS

  1. Classify the workload. Mark it as legacy-dependent, general-purpose, or forward-looking. Legacy-dependent workloads normally point to 8, general-purpose workloads to 9, and forward-looking workloads to 10 only after validation.
  2. Collect provider evidence. Save the image name, architecture, release date, maintenance policy, console options, and support statement for your selected plan.
  3. Validate the software matrix. Match the operating-system major version against every panel, repository, runtime, module, and vendor support statement.
  4. Deploy a disposable test VPS. Install the same image and automation used for production. Exercise provisioning, updates, firewalling, backups, monitoring, TLS, and application deployment.
  5. Document minor-version maintenance. Plan regular updates within the major release because each minor version is retired when its successor is released.
  6. Launch with rollback ready. Keep an image or snapshot from the known-good state and document who can restore it and how DNS, certificates, and data consistency will be handled.

Common pitfalls and practical fixes

“The provider lists AlmaLinux 10, so every VPS can run it.”

Why it fails: the listing may apply to only certain CPU generations, plans, regions, or image architectures. Fix: confirm x86-64-v3 or x86_64_v2 requirements and obtain a support statement for the exact plan.

“The EL9 repository should work on EL10.”

Why it fails: repository packages can depend on release-specific libraries, policies, or module interfaces. Fix: use the vendor’s EL10 channel, or choose AlmaLinux 9 until one exists.

“An in-place upgrade is a substitute for testing.”

Why it fails: ELevate handles the operating-system transition, not every application, panel, repository, or kernel module. Fix: restore-test backups, clone the stack, run workload tests, and keep console recovery available.

“Staying on 8 avoids all migration work.”

Why it fails: it postpones rather than removes the major-version project while the remaining support window shrinks. Fix: document the compatibility dependency and schedule a move to 9 or 10 before support ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The server is patched, so the minor version is covered forever.”

Why it fails: AlmaLinux retires each minor version when the next minor version is released. Fix: keep automated, monitored updates within the major release and test them in staging.

Decision framework by VPS scenario

Your situation Recommended release Reasoning
Existing EL8 application with a vendor requirement AlmaLinux 8 for now Compatibility outweighs the shorter runway; plan and test a migration.
New website, API, database, or internal service with mainstream dependencies AlmaLinux 9 Best balance of maturity, ecosystem coverage, and support horizon.
New service, provider has a validated EL10 image, and all vendors support EL10 AlmaLinux 10 Uses the newest major release after the relevant hardware and software checks.
Provider offers only an unclear or unmaintained image Choose a different release or provider An undocumented image creates avoidable boot, update, and recovery risk.
EL10 application requirement but CPU or panel support is uncertain Delay deployment or stay on 9 temporarily Resolve the compatibility gap before placing production traffic on the server.

Final recommendation

For a typical new VPS in 2026, deploy AlmaLinux 9 after confirming the provider image and your software matrix. Keep AlmaLinux 8 only where an existing EL8 dependency is documented and actively managed. Select AlmaLinux 10 when its longer planning horizon is valuable and you have verified the CPU architecture, provider image, control panel, kernel modules, repositories, and application behavior. Whichever major release you choose, keep minor packages current and treat the next major-version migration as a project with a tested restore path rather than an unattended update.
