Alligators usually have broad, rounded U-shaped snouts, overlapping jaws, darker coloration, and a stronger association with freshwater. Crocodiles usually have longer, narrower V-shaped snouts, visible teeth when the mouth is closed, and better tolerance for salt water. Size and temperament vary substantially among crocodile species, so the most reliable comparison identifies the species before making a claim about maximum size or aggression.
Alligator and crocodile differences at a glance
The two animals are closely related crocodilians, but several visible and ecological traits usually separate them. The table below describes common patterns rather than absolute rules for every species or individual.
| Feature | Alligator | Crocodile |
|---|---|---|
| Snout | Short, broad and rounded, forming a U shape when viewed from above | Typically longer, narrower and more pointed, forming a V shape |
| Teeth with the mouth closed | The large fourth tooth in the lower jaw fits into an upper-jaw socket and is generally hidden | Teeth are typically visible along both the upper and lower jaws |
| Typical coloration and build | American alligators are generally darker, heavily armored, broad-headed and equipped with a muscular tail | Color, head shape and body build differ by species |
| Water tolerance | Most strongly associated with freshwater habitats | Species with salt glands can use freshwater, brackish water, estuaries and salt water |
| Geographic example | American alligators occur across the southeastern United States | The American crocodile is associated with tropical and warm subtropical environments |
| Temperament | Generally regarded as calmer than crocodiles, but still a powerful, unpredictable predator | Often regarded as more aggressive, though behavior depends on species, individual condition, season and human actions |
When the animals are at a distance, the snout is usually the quickest clue. Teeth provide a useful second check, and habitat can support the identification when the animal is in a region where only one of the two is expected.

How to identify one safely
1. Start with the snout
Look at the outline of the head rather than trying to approach for a close view. Smithsonian descriptions characterize an alligator’s snout as short and wide with a rounded, U-shaped end. A crocodile’s snout is usually longer and thinner, ending in a more pointed V shape. This is a visual tendency, not a license to classify an unfamiliar animal from a dangerous distance.

2. Check the teeth only if the mouth is already closed and you are far away
An alligator’s prominent fourth lower-jaw tooth is received by a socket in the upper jaw, so it is not normally visible when the mouth is closed. Crocodiles typically show teeth from both jaws in that position. An open mouth, a juvenile animal, an unusual viewing angle or a partially submerged head can make this test difficult, so use it as confirmation rather than the only criterion.
3. Use overall head and body form
American alligators are generally darker and heavily armored, with a broad head and a muscular tail. Crocodiles cannot be assigned one universal body shape because the word covers multiple species. If the animal’s color looks different from the expected pattern, rely more heavily on snout, teeth and location.
4. Consider the setting
American alligators commonly occupy slow-moving rivers, swamps, marshes and lakes. A crocodile in a coastal estuary or marine-influenced water is consistent with the salt tolerance found in crocodile species that possess salt glands. Habitat narrows the possibilities but does not replace a physical identification: alligator and crocodile ranges can include overlapping freshwater or coastal environments.
5. Do not close the distance to improve a photograph
Both animals are carnivorous ambush predators with powerful jaws. A long lens, a marked viewing area or a local wildlife authority’s guidance is safer than walking toward the shoreline, feeding an animal or attempting to make it open its mouth. Identification should never depend on provoking a response.
Which is bigger: an alligator or a crocodile?
There is no honest single answer for the word “crocodile.” Crocodiles range from relatively small species to very large ones, so a comparison must name the crocodile species and the alligator species. Saying that every crocodile is larger than every alligator is incorrect.
American alligator measurements
For the American alligator, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports average lengths of 8.2 feet (2.6 meters) for females and 11.2 feet (3.4 meters) for males. A very large male can approach 1,000 pounds (454 kilograms). The U.S. Geological Survey gives a total-length range of 1.8 to 5 meters for the species. These figures describe a named species and should not be presented as the size of all alligators or all crocodilians.

| Measurement | American alligator | What it means for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Average female length | 8.2 feet (2.6 m), reported by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo; page retrieved in 2026 | A species-specific average, not a maximum |
| Average male length | 11.2 feet (3.4 m), reported by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo; page retrieved in 2026 | Males average longer than females in this cited population description |
| Very large male | Nearly 1,000 pounds (454 kg), according to the Smithsonian description | An exceptional size, not a typical adult weight |
| Total-length range | 1.8–5 m, according to the U.S. Geological Survey profile | A broad species range that includes young and adult animals |
| Crocodile maximum or average | Not stated without naming a species | Crocodile size varies too widely for one generalized figure |
How to read a size claim
Ask three questions before accepting a number. First, which species is being measured? Second, is the value an average, a range or an exceptional record? Third, does the figure refer to total length, which includes the tail, or to another measurement? A species-specific average is useful for setting expectations; an extreme record illustrates what is possible but says little about the animal most visitors will see.
Sex also matters in the American alligator figures above, with separate averages for females and males. A photograph can exaggerate apparent length when the tail is hidden, the animal is partly submerged or the camera is using a wide-angle lens. Visual estimates should therefore remain approximate unless a trained survey measured the animal.
Habitat: freshwater alligators and salt-tolerant crocodiles
Where American alligators live
American alligators range across the southeastern United States, from northern coastal North Carolina to Lake Worth in central Texas. Their usual settings are freshwater or mostly freshwater: slow-moving rivers, swamps, marshes and lakes. These habitats provide shallow edges, cover and access to prey, while the animals’ broad heads and strong tails suit an ambush lifestyle.
“Freshwater animal” is a useful shorthand, not a claim that an alligator can never encounter salt. A coastal wetland can contain changing salinity, and an individual may move through connected waterways. The practical distinction is that alligators are more strongly associated with freshwater than crocodiles that possess specialized salt glands.
Why some crocodiles handle salt water better
Crocodile species with salt glands can tolerate freshwater, brackish water, coastal estuaries and salt water. This physiological capability helps explain why crocodiles are often encountered in a wider range of coastal settings. It does not mean every crocodile species uses every type of water equally, nor does it make the word “crocodile” a precise habitat description by itself.

The American crocodile’s climate and range context
The American crocodile is associated with tropical and warm subtropical environments and is assessed separately from the American alligator. If a question concerns a crocodile seen in the United States, identify the region and species rather than assuming that an American alligator and an American crocodile have the same range or habitat preferences.

| Question | Most accurate answer |
|---|---|
| Can an alligator live in salt water? | Alligators are primarily associated with freshwater; occasional movement through coastal or mixed-salinity water should not be confused with the stronger salt-water tolerance of crocodile species with salt glands. |
| Can a crocodile live in freshwater? | Yes. Crocodiles with salt glands can use freshwater as well as brackish and salt water. |
| Does coastal habitat prove an animal is a crocodile? | No. Use the snout, teeth, species range and local context together. |
Behavior and aggression
Shared hunting strategy
Alligators and crocodiles are carnivorous ambush predators. Their powerful jaws allow them to seize prey quickly, and a motionless animal at the water’s edge can be difficult to detect. The ambush strategy explains why a quiet shoreline is not automatically a safe shoreline: the animal may be conserving energy and waiting rather than displaying hostility.
Are crocodiles more aggressive?
Smithsonian describes alligators as generally thought of as calmer and less aggressive than crocodiles, but it also warns that both can be unpredictable, especially when hungry. “More aggressive” is therefore a population-level tendency, not a guarantee about an individual encounter. Species, age, physical condition, season, access to food and the behavior of nearby people can all change the risk.
A calm-looking alligator can still react quickly, and a crocodile that does not move may still be monitoring an observer. Do not use the animal’s apparent lack of movement, a closed mouth or a reputation for being calmer as permission to approach.

- Closing the distance to take a photograph or check the teeth
- Feeding an animal or leaving food near the water
- Standing between an animal and the water or between an adult and smaller animals
- Entering shallow water where visibility is poor
- Assuming a familiar species is harmless because it is smaller than expected
The safest behavioral rule is species-neutral: observe from a substantial distance, keep children and pets away from the water’s edge, follow posted local guidance and never test an animal’s reaction.
A practical field checklist
Use this sequence when you need a working identification from a safe observation point.
- Record the location. Note the country, state or coastal setting. Range information can eliminate some possibilities, but it is not conclusive by itself.
- Describe the snout. Broad and rounded suggests an alligator; long, narrow and pointed suggests a crocodile.
- Look for teeth without approaching. A closed-mouth alligator generally hides the large fourth lower tooth; a crocodile typically shows teeth along both jaws.
- Check body impression. A darker, heavily armored, broad-headed animal with a muscular tail fits the usual description of an American alligator. Use caution with color because lighting, water and mud can alter its appearance.
- Assess the water. Freshwater marshes and lakes fit the American alligator’s usual habitat. Estuaries and salt water are compatible with crocodile species that have salt glands.
- Keep the identification provisional. If the snout, teeth and habitat disagree, record the uncertainty instead of forcing a label.
This checklist is for observation, not capture or handling. A photograph should be taken from the same safe distance you would use without a camera.

Taxonomy: why the common names can mislead
“Alligator” and “crocodile” are common names applied within a larger crocodilian group. Smithsonian notes eight species in the family Alligatoridae, although only two are usually called alligators: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. That naming convention means a general statement about “alligators” may be referring mainly to those two familiar species, while a statement about “crocodiles” may cover many species with different body sizes, habitats and behavior.
This is why species names matter in a field guide, wildlife report or news story. “Crocodile” alone is adequate for a broad identification lesson, but it is not adequate for quoting a maximum length, describing a conservation trend or predicting how an animal uses water. Add the species whenever the claim involves a number, range or management decision.
Conservation status and what it changes
American crocodile
The American crocodile is listed as Vulnerable in the cited International Union for Conservation of Nature assessment context. A Smithsonian page from 2017 reports a 30% population decline over the last three generations in that assessment context. The figure is tied to that assessment and date; it is not a universal decline rate for every crocodile species or every region.
American alligator
The supplied species information identifies the American alligator’s broad southeastern U.S. range and provides current size figures, but it does not establish one comparable population-decline percentage in this article’s evidence. Avoid transferring the American crocodile’s Vulnerable assessment or its 30% figure to alligators.
Why conservation status belongs in an identification article
Conservation status affects how a sighting should be interpreted. A species can be widespread in one part of its range yet face pressure elsewhere, and a familiar common name can conceal substantial differences among species. Correct identification supports accurate reporting, responsible wildlife viewing and species-specific conservation decisions.

“Alligators cannot enter salt water”
Too absolute. Alligators are more strongly associated with freshwater, while some crocodiles have salt glands that support regular use of saline environments. Treat habitat as a tendency, not a rigid barrier.
“Visible teeth always mean crocodile”
Not by itself. The mouth may be open, the animal may be young or the viewing angle may be misleading. Combine the tooth clue with snout shape and location.
“A calmer reputation makes an alligator safe”
No. Both animals are powerful ambush predators, and Smithsonian’s warning about unpredictability applies to both. Distance and non-interference are more reliable safety measures than reputation.

“Color gives a definite identification”
Color and armor can support an identification of an American alligator, which is generally darker and heavily armored, but lighting, mud, water and individual variation can obscure those traits. Snout and jaw structure deserve greater weight.
Choosing the right answer for a specific sighting
For a quick identification, report the strongest visible evidence first: “The animal has a broad U-shaped snout and no obvious lower fourth tooth when its mouth is closed, so it is consistent with an alligator.” For a scientific or conservation record, add the location, date, habitat and a species-level identification only when the evidence supports it.
For a size question, say “American alligator” before quoting the Smithsonian averages or the U.S. Geological Survey range. For a salt-water question, distinguish an alligator’s usual freshwater association from the salt-gland capability documented for some crocodiles. For an aggression question, describe the general tendency while making clear that individual behavior is unpredictable.
The most dependable comparison is therefore not a single slogan. It is a combination of jaw shape, teeth, species, habitat and cautious interpretation.
