EchoPortal repurposes a first-generation Amazon Echo Spot as a small PC dashboard: it replaces the Spot’s original software with LineageOS and a custom Android launcher, then connects it over Wi-Fi to an agent running on a Windows PC. It is a specialist modification—not an Alexa setting—and the installation erases the Spot. The creator says the demonstration video is composited, so it should not be read as unedited footage proving every feature running on the physical device.
What EchoPortal does
The project divides its work between a Kotlin app on the Echo Spot and a Windows tray agent that sends information across the local network. The app is designed as a launcher, with a ring-style home screen and swipeable dashboard faces. According to the EchoPortal README and the creator’s Reddit post, those faces include:
- A clock and weather-linked visual themes, including generated weather art.
- PC and GPU telemetry, along with monitoring for Claude Code activity.
- Progress monitoring for ComfyUI image generation.
- Local voice-to-text that types dictated text into the currently focused PC window.
- Stock and cryptocurrency displays.
These are project and creator descriptions, not independently verified performance results. NVIDIA hardware is optional for the voice face, and ComfyUI is optional for the ComfyUI and Sky faces; the README says the other faces can work without those components.
Which Echo Spot and PC are supported?
The documented target is the original 2017 Echo Spot, model VN94DQ, codename rook. The project does not claim support for later Echo Show devices or other Echo Spot generations. Its documented software setup is LineageOS 18.1 on the Spot and a companion agent on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

The first-generation Spot is therefore essential hardware for following the documented build. The creator said their thrifted unit cost $4, which is one person’s anecdote—not a typical price or a guide to current used-market availability.
How the installation changes the Spot
EchoPortal does not simply add a dashboard on top of Alexa. Its quick-start outline replaces the original software setup with a custom Android-based environment. The repository’s sequence is to unlock the bootloader with amonet, install TWRP, flash LineageOS, then install the Windows agent and Android shell and connect the Spot to the agent.

- Unlock the Spot’s bootloader using the amonet method documented by the project.
- Install TWRP, the custom recovery used in the documented process.
- Flash LineageOS 18.1 on the Spot.
- Install the Windows tray agent and Android shell using the project’s current instructions.
- Connect the Spot to the PC agent over the local network.
Follow the EchoPortal repository for its exact files and instructions rather than treating this outline as a complete flashing guide. The README warns that installation erases the device and voids any warranty. The project is MIT-licensed and says it is not affiliated with Amazon.
Security and demo limitations to weigh first
The Windows agent has no authentication
The README says the agent listens on the local network without authentication and advises running it only on a trusted network. That means this is not a good fit for an untrusted or shared network. The voice face adds another practical consideration: dictated text is sent to whichever PC window currently has focus, so the destination can be wrong if focus changes.

The video is composited
The creator disclosed that the demonstration combines a native Android screen capture with an image, while saying the app and interface are real. It is not an unedited recording that independently establishes every feature operating on a physical Echo Spot. The repository gives a more specific account of the implementation, but its existence is not independent testing.

The real choice is between keeping the Echo Spot’s Amazon software for its normal Alexa role and accepting a device-erasing custom firmware installation to make it a dedicated desk display. EchoPortal’s appeal is the compact screen and its collection of PC-oriented faces; the trade-offs are the irreversible data loss involved in setup, the warranty warning, and a LAN agent with no authentication. The available project information does not establish that either choice is best for every owner.
