If your Alexa green light won’t turn off, first check how it moves: a flashing or pulsing green light means an incoming call, while a spinning green light means an active call or Drop In. Answer or let an incoming call pass; for an unexpected active session, say “Hang Up.”
What the green light means
Amazon Help’s “What Do the Lights on Your Echo Speaker Mean?” guide distinguishes the states by motion: pulsing green signals a received call, and spinning green signals an active call or Drop In. Its guide says the indicators apply to Alexa+ and original Alexa, but some newer Alexa+ devices and Echo devices with screens have separate indicator guidance, so behavior may not be identical across every model.
| Green-light motion | What it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing or pulsing | An incoming call | Say “Answer Call” if you want to take it, or let it pass. |
| Spinning | An active call or Drop In | Say “Hang Up” to end the session. |
How to stop the green light
If it is flashing or pulsing
The Echo is signaling an incoming call. If you recognize and want to take it, say “Answer Call.” Otherwise, let the call pass; this light is not the same as an active call or Drop In.
If it is spinning
The device has an active call or Drop In. Say “Hang Up” to end it. Amazon Help’s “Green Light Won’t Turn Off On Your Echo Device” recommends this for an unexpected session.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
If an unexpected call or Drop In keeps happening
- Check Alexa voice history. Review the history for a request Alexa may have misheard and interpreted as a command to start a call or Drop In.
- Turn off Drop In or Communications for the affected device. Use the Alexa app’s device-specific settings to disable Drop In, or turn off Communications for that device if you do not want it to handle calls and related communication features. Amazon’s help page identifies these controls as ways to prevent unwanted sessions.
If the green light stays on after you end the session
Amazon’s green-light troubleshooting page does not document a dedicated next step for an indicator that remains on after the call or Drop In has ended. If the Echo is also intermittent or unresponsive, Amazon’s separate “Restart Your Alexa Built-in Device” guidance supports disconnecting the device or power adapter and reconnecting it. Treat that as a general restart for an unresponsive or intermittent device, not a guaranteed fix for the green light.
