There is no honest universal figure for the energy or water used by one AI prompt. A short text completion can be far lighter than image or video generation, extended reasoning, or an autonomous agent that calls tools repeatedly. The result also depends on the model, hardware, data-centre cooling system, electricity mix, location and whether the estimate counts only live inference or the full lifecycle.
The clearest practical rule is to match the least intensive AI mode to the job, avoid unnecessary retries, and prefer providers that disclose energy, carbon and water data. AI has a growing environmental cost, but it can also reduce emissions in buildings, transport and energy systems when deployed effectively.
What does AI’s environmental footprint include?
AI’s footprint is larger than the electricity consumed while a reply appears on your screen. A lifecycle view includes several stages and impact types:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Training: electricity for developing and repeatedly refining a model.
- Inference: electricity used each time the trained model generates text, images, video, audio or an action.
- Electricity-related emissions: carbon released by the power plants supplying the data centre. The same workload can have a very different footprint in a coal-heavy grid and a low-carbon grid.
- Cooling water: water withdrawn, consumed or discharged by cooling equipment.
- Upstream water: water used by power generation and by manufacturing chips, servers and other equipment.
- Construction and networks: materials, cement, transmission infrastructure and network equipment needed to build and connect facilities.
- End of life: discarded servers, batteries, chips and other electronic waste.
The OECD recommends that operators track energy, greenhouse-gas emissions, water withdrawal, water consumption, discharge quality and water-usage effectiveness (WUE). In practice, reporting is incomplete: only about 33% to 50% of data-centre operators compile water-use metrics, according to the OECD.

How much electricity do data centres and AI use?
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that data centres worldwide used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption. That figure covers all data-centre workloads, not AI alone. Cloud storage, web services, streaming, enterprise software and conventional computing operate alongside AI systems.
Servers account for roughly 60% of electricity demand in a modern data centre on average. The remainder covers cooling, networking, storage, power conversion and other supporting infrastructure. A facility with efficient servers can therefore still have a substantial cooling and power-distribution load.
There is no reliable global total for AI-only electricity use because providers generally do not publish enough detail to separate generative-AI workloads from the rest of their infrastructure. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) says companies are “generally not reporting details” of generative AI’s energy and water use.

How much energy does one AI query use?
No single number applies to every query. The IEA’s 2026 analysis says energy use per individual AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years as models, chips and data-centre systems have become more efficient. At the same time, the analysis finds that some workloads can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy than simple text generation.

That range is why a viral “one prompt equals a bottle of water” or “one prompt uses X watt-hours” claim should not be treated as universal. A meaningful estimate must identify at least:
- the model and hardware;
- the type and length of the task;
- whether the calculation includes only inference or also training and infrastructure overhead;
- the data-centre’s cooling design and utilisation; and
- the electricity mix and geographic location.
A short text answer from a lightly loaded, efficient system is one case. A high-resolution video, a long reasoning trace, or an agent that performs many searches and tool calls is a fundamentally different workload.
Why “per prompt” estimates vary so widely
Text generation normally produces tokens, while image and video systems process much larger representations and often perform multiple denoising or rendering steps. Reasoning modes may spend additional compute evaluating intermediate possibilities before returning an answer. Agentic systems can repeat model calls, browse, execute code and inspect results, multiplying the work associated with one user request.

Even within text, a long context window, a large output, retrieval from documents and repeated retries increase computation. These are reasons to treat any published per-query figure as a measurement for a specified setup, not a permanent property of “AI”.

Does ChatGPT or another AI use a lot of water?
AI services can use water directly and indirectly, but an exact amount for a particular ChatGPT conversation or competing service is usually not publicly established. Direct water use comes mainly from data-centre cooling. Indirect water use occurs at power plants that generate the electricity, and semiconductor fabrication also requires water.
Water accounting is less complete than energy accounting. The OECD reports that only about one-third to one-half of operators compile water metrics, and companies rarely publish enough model-level information to assign a defensible water total to an individual user request.
Location matters
The IEA reports that nearly 40% of identified AI-focused data-centre capacity is in areas with high or extremely high baseline water stress. A litre consumed in a water-abundant region does not create the same local risk as a litre consumed in a drought-prone basin. Regional water availability, seasonal conditions, the source of cooling water and whether water is returned or consumed all affect the impact.

There is no universally best cooling design. The IEA notes a trade-off: cooling equipment that minimises water use tends to consume more energy, while energy-efficient cooling can use more water. A provider that advertises low water use should therefore also explain the associated energy demand and electricity emissions rather than presenting water performance in isolation.

How much carbon pollution is associated with AI?
Available headline figures generally describe data centres as a whole, not AI separately. The IEA associates data centres with about 150 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 from electricity use today and projects around 350 Mt in 2035 in its central scenario, about 1.5% of global energy-related emissions in that year. These are scenario-based, sector-wide estimates; they are not a cleanly measured generative-AI total.
Another IEA estimate puts current indirect data-centre emissions at about 180 Mt of CO2. The difference reflects different analytical boundaries, datasets or accounting conventions, so the figures should not be added together or presented as contradictory measurements of AI alone.
GAO says the specific share attributable to generative AI remains unclear because providers do not disclose enough information about model training, inference infrastructure, energy consumption, carbon emissions and water consumption. Carbon intensity also changes with time: a workload run when a grid has abundant renewable generation can have a different footprint from the same workload run during a fossil-fuel-heavy period.
Which AI tasks use the most electricity?
The IEA identifies three categories that can be dramatically more energy-intensive than straightforward text generation:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

| Task type | Why it can require more energy | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Simple text generation | Usually a single, comparatively small inference workload. | Use it when a text answer is sufficient. |
| Extended reasoning | The system may perform additional internal computation before producing an answer. | Reserve it for problems where the extra reasoning materially improves accuracy. |
| Image generation | Rendering a visual involves substantially more computation than producing a short text response. | Specify the desired result carefully and avoid unnecessary variations. |
| Video generation | Many frames, high resolution and temporal consistency create a much larger workload. | Use lower resolution or shorter clips when that meets the purpose. |
| Agentic workflows | One request can trigger repeated model calls, searches, code execution and tool interactions. | Set clear limits on steps, retries and tool access. |
The IEA’s comparison is about relative intensity, not a universal multiplier for every product. Hardware, model size, output length and implementation still matter.
What can an individual user do to reduce an AI carbon footprint?
User choices cannot eliminate the data-centre impacts of a cloud service, but they can reduce avoidable computation and signal demand for better reporting.
- Use AI when it adds clear value. For a question that can be answered reliably from a known document or your own notes, a conventional lookup or existing software may be enough. Avoid generating outputs simply to discard them.
- Choose the least intensive mode that works. Prefer ordinary text for a text task. Do not select image, video, extended-reasoning or autonomous-agent modes unless their extra capability is needed.
- Write a specific first prompt. Include the audience, format, length, source material and constraints. This is a practical way to reduce trial-and-error retries; it is not a measured universal percentage saving.
- Iterate deliberately. Combine related changes into one revision, stop when the result meets the requirement and delete unused generations where the service allows it.
- Control agentic jobs. Limit the number of tool calls, browsing steps, retries and maximum output length. Review the plan before allowing an agent to run unattended.
- Reuse useful outputs. Save a good draft, prompt or transformation rather than regenerating the same result in multiple sessions.
- Prefer transparent providers. Look for model, hardware, energy, carbon, water and location disclosures. GAO specifically identifies these details as information developers could provide.
- Keep your own devices efficient. Lowering screen brightness, closing unused applications and using efficient hardware reduces local electricity. Those actions are separate from the cloud data-centre energy and water used by the AI request.
How should you compare competing AI services?
A low advertised price or a “green” label is not enough to establish a lower environmental impact. Compare services on the dimensions below, and mark information as unavailable when providers do not publish it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |

| Task intensity | Does the service use text, image, video, reasoning or agentic modes, and can you select a simpler mode? |
| Disclosure quality | Does the provider publish model details, training and inference infrastructure, energy, carbon and water metrics? |
| Electricity and location | Where are workloads processed, what is known about the regional grid and are figures annual, marginal or averaged? |
| Cooling and water stress | What cooling system is used, how are withdrawal and consumption defined, and is the site in a water-stressed area? |
| Hardware lifecycle | Does the provider explain server replacement, manufacturing impacts, reuse and electronic-waste handling? |
| Efficiency measures | Are there credible efficiency targets, renewable-energy arrangements or workload-shifting practices, with boundaries and dates stated? |
Do not rank services as “greenest” when comparable data is missing. A provider may publish renewable-energy purchases without disclosing water use, or report efficient cooling without revealing the extra electricity required. Those are partial indicators, not a complete footprint.
Can AI reduce emissions as well as create them?
Yes, but potential benefits do not automatically cancel operational impacts. The IEA estimates that existing AI applications in buildings, transport and energy systems could enable 1,400 Mt of CO2 reductions in 2035 in a widespread-adoption case. That is a conditional scenario, dependent on deployment, incentives, regulation and real-world performance.
Examples include detecting building faults so heating and cooling waste less energy, improving transport routing, forecasting renewable generation and balancing electricity demand. Rebound effects can reduce the net benefit: cheaper or more efficient services may increase overall use. A credible assessment therefore compares the emissions avoided by a specific application with the energy, water, hardware and infrastructure it requires.
What is still unknown?
- A universal energy or water figure per prompt is not established.
- Provider-level, AI-only disclosures remain incomplete.
- Data-centre totals combine AI with many non-AI workloads.
- Water estimates depend on definitions such as withdrawal versus consumption, local scarcity and whether indirect power-generation water is included.
- Scenario projections for 2035 are not guarantees; outcomes depend on technology, demand, policy and grid changes.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore comparative rather than absolute: simpler, shorter and less frequently repeated tasks generally require less computation than image, video, extended-reasoning or agentic workloads, while the local climate and water consequences depend heavily on infrastructure and location.
