Both AirPods and other compatible Bluetooth headphones work with a Mac. Choose AirPods if you value Apple’s documented setup and switching conveniences across supported Apple devices; choose another headset if its fit, controls, or model-specific features suit you better. Compatibility depends on the exact headphones and, for some AirPods, the macOS version. There is no established universal winner for sound, calls, comfort, or value.

Do AirPods and other Bluetooth headphones work with a Mac?

Yes. Apple provides instructions for pairing AirPods with a Mac, and Bluetooth headphones are also listed among Mac accessories. AirPods can be used to listen to audio and make phone calls; you may need to select them as the Mac’s audio output. Check Apple’s AirPods setup and compatibility guide for the requirements for your specific model and current macOS version. For another headset, check its manufacturer’s Mac pairing instructions. Apple’s Support guide also states: “You can use AirPods as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device.” Siri is unavailable when AirPods are used with a non-Apple device.

What is the practical difference?

AirPods and supported Apple devices

AirPods offer a documented convenience when used with eligible Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple describes automatic switching for supported models and operating systems, and lets users change when AirPods connect to a Mac. These conditions matter: automatic switching is not a guarantee for every AirPods model, device, or software version. See Apple’s guidance on switching AirPods between devices.

Other Bluetooth headphones and multipoint

Bluetooth headphones are not all alike. Some models support multipoint, which can keep a headset connected to more than one source; availability and behavior depend on the specific model. Sony, for example, documents multipoint as a model-dependent feature in its multipoint support information. Check the headset’s own specifications if you want to switch between a Mac and another device. Do not assume that every Bluetooth headset offers the same connection behavior as AirPods’ Apple-device switching.

How to choose the right headphones for your Mac

  • Choose the wearing style you prefer. AirPods are in-ear earbuds; alternatives include in-ear, on-ear, and over-ear designs. Comfort and fit are personal, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner.
  • Consider the devices you use. If you use supported Apple devices with the same Apple Account, AirPods’ setup and switching features may be useful. If you regularly connect to two sources, look for a headset that specifically documents multipoint.
  • Verify compatibility before buying. Check the exact headphone model’s pairing instructions and the macOS requirements. Apple lists model-specific requirements for some AirPods.
  • Compare features by model. For calls, controls, noise cancellation, or other features, review specifications and independent tests for the particular products you are considering. There is no basis here for declaring AirPods or Bluetooth headphones generally better on these measures.
  • Set realistic audio expectations. Apple says Bluetooth connections are not lossless and identifies AAC use for specified AirPods models. That does not establish how a particular listener will perceive the sound or rank all Bluetooth headphones against AirPods. See Apple’s information about lossless audio with AirPods.

Connect AirPods to a Mac

  1. Try automatic setup. If your AirPods are already associated with an iPhone, Apple says they should connect automatically to a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, when the relevant model and system requirements are met.
  2. Select AirPods on the Mac. Choose them in the Mac’s Bluetooth controls or sound controls. If they connect but audio still comes from the Mac speakers, select AirPods as the audio output.
  3. Pair manually if needed. Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the procedure for their generation, then select them in the Mac’s Bluetooth settings. Case and headphone pairing steps vary by model; use Apple’s current setup instructions rather than relying on a generic button sequence.

What this comparison cannot settle

Whether a particular pair sounds better, has a clearer microphone, fits more comfortably, lasts longer, cancels more noise, or offers better value requires model-specific evidence or controlled comparisons. Neither “AirPods” nor “Bluetooth headphones” is a single product with uniform performance. Compare the exact models against the features you care about.
