Run Apple’s fit test with both AirPods Pro inserted, then improve the result in this order: reseat each earbud, rotate the stem toward your face, adjust the angle, and only then try another tip size. A good seal should feel snug, comfortable and secure, and it is what allows AirPods Pro to deliver stronger noise cancellation and fuller bass. AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) use Ear Tip Fit Test; AirPods Pro 3 on iOS or iPadOS 26 and later use Acoustic Seal Test.
What the AirPods Pro fit test tells you
The test checks whether each silicone ear tip is sealing the ear-canal opening well enough for the earbuds’ acoustic and noise-control systems to work as designed. Apple says a good seal improves active noise cancellation and gives music richer bass. The result is reported separately for the left and right AirPod, so one ear can pass while the other needs adjustment.
A pass is not a medical result and does not prove that your ears are healthy. It only indicates that the ear tip and the way you are wearing the AirPod are creating an effective acoustic seal at that moment. A seal can change when you walk, talk, chew, sweat or move your jaw, which is why comfort and stability over normal use matter as much as the on-screen result.

How to run the AirPods Pro Ear Tip Fit Test or Acoustic Seal Test
- Connect the earbuds. Pair AirPods Pro with your iPhone or iPad and make sure both earbuds are charged enough to remain connected.
- Insert the matching earbud. Put the left AirPod in your left ear and the right AirPod in your right ear. Do not test with one earbud sitting in the charging case.
- Open the AirPods settings page. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, find your connected AirPods Pro, and tap the information button or the device name. On some versions, tapping the AirPods Pro name near the top of Settings opens the same controls.
- Choose the generation-specific test. Select Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro 1 or 2. Select Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 when the iPhone or iPad is running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later.
- Start the measurement. Tap Continue, then Play. Keep still and quiet while the test runs.
- Read both results. Check the left and right outcomes independently. If one side reports a poor seal, work on that ear first rather than immediately replacing both tips.
- Reseat before changing size. Rotate the stem toward your face, adjust the angle and press the earbud gently into place. Run the test again.
- Change only when needed. If the result remains poor, try a different tip size on the problem ear. Apple says the left and right ears may need different sizes.
The test is a snapshot of the fit you created while wearing the earbuds. A pass that feels painful, unstable or overly tight is not a good long-term fit; use the comfort and movement checks below before deciding that the result is satisfactory.
How to improve a poor seal without changing the tip
Use the correct insertion direction
Place the soft tip at the ear-canal opening, then rotate the stem toward your face as you seat the AirPod. The stem should not point straight down if that position leaves the tip tilted away from the canal. A small rotation can close a leak without requiring a larger tip.
Adjust angle and depth gently
Press lightly while changing the angle by a few degrees. The goal is contact around the opening, not forceful pressure deep inside the canal. If pushing harder makes the ear sore or causes the tip to fold, withdraw slightly and try a different angle.
Check the earbud after movement
Walk, turn your head and speak for several minutes, then run the test again. If the seal disappears only during movement, the issue may be seating or stability rather than the nominal tip size. A tip that passes while you are motionless but loosens during ordinary activity is not a dependable fit.

Keep the contact surfaces clean
Skin oil, moisture and debris can make silicone slide. Remove the tip, wipe it and the outside of the AirPod with a clean lint-free cloth, let everything dry, and reattach the tip before testing. Do not push liquid into the speaker openings.
Choosing the right ear-tip size
Medium tips are installed by default. Size is not a ranking from smallest to largest; it is a way to match the shape of each ear. A tip that is too small can feel loose, leak sound or fall out during movement. A tip that is too large can create pressure, soreness or a compressed feeling even if it initially blocks outside noise.
| What you notice | Likely interpretation | Next adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Earbud loosens, bass sounds thin or the fit test fails | The tip may be too small, poorly seated or at the wrong angle. | Reseat and rotate first; then try the next larger size on that ear. |
| Pressure, pain, a plugged feeling or rapid fatigue | The tip may be too large or inserted at an uncomfortable angle. | Try the next smaller size and reduce insertion pressure. |
| One side passes and the other fails | Your ear canals are not identical, or one AirPod is seated differently. | Adjust the failing side independently; different left and right sizes are acceptable. |
| Both sides pass but the earbuds move during a walk | The static seal is adequate, but the fit is not stable under movement. | Rework rotation and angle, then test again while checking comfort after activity. |
The 10–15-minute comfort check
Apple’s practical guidance is to wear the AirPods for 10–15 minutes during normal activity, such as walking. During that period, notice whether either ear develops pressure, pain, itching, a blocked sensation or a need to keep pushing the earbud back in. A size that sounds good for one song but becomes uncomfortable after several minutes is not the right everyday choice.

Check stability as well as comfort. The earbud should remain secure when you walk, look down, speak and turn your head. If one side repeatedly slips, treat that side separately instead of choosing a compromise size for both ears.

How to remove and install an AirPods Pro ear tip
Removing a tip
- Hold the silicone tip near its base, where it meets the AirPod’s oval connector.
- Pull straight out with steady pressure. Do not yank the thin outer lip.
- If your fingers slip, use a clean lint-free cloth for grip. Rolling the soft edge inside-out can expose the base and provide more leverage.
Attaching a tip
- Match the tip’s oval connector to the oval mount on the AirPod.
- Push the tip onto the mount until it clicks into place.
- Run a finger around the base to confirm that the connector is fully seated and the silicone is not folded.
Use replacement tips made for the exact AirPods Pro generation. Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 replacement listing specifies XS, S, M and L sizes and says those tips are compatible only with AirPods Pro 2. A tip that physically fits another model is not automatically an approved or acoustically equivalent match.
Why a seal can keep failing
The insertion angle changes between attempts
Small differences in rotation can open a leak at the front or rear of the canal. Start with the stem turned toward your face and make the angle adjustment before changing size.
Your ears need different sizes
Left and right ear canals commonly differ in shape. If one side repeatedly fails while the other passes, use separate sizes rather than forcing both ears to use the same tip.

The earbud is being dislodged during activity
Jaw movement, sweat, hair or repeated contact with a hat can shift the AirPod after a successful stationary test. Perform the 10–15-minute walking check and adjust the fit for movement, not just for the moment the test starts.
Noise cancellation is being judged in changing conditions
A fit test evaluates the ear-tip seal, while perceived noise reduction also depends on the sound around you and the selected listening mode. Compare results in the same environment after reseating; do not treat a louder room as proof that the tip failed.
The software or connection is not ready
If the menu is missing, reconnect the AirPods Pro, confirm that both earbuds are detected, and verify the operating-system requirement for your generation. AirPods Pro 3 specifically require iOS or iPadOS 26 or later for the Acoustic Seal Test.

- Start with a clean, undamaged tip and the correct generation-specific size.
- Insert the AirPod with the tip centered at the canal opening.
- Rotate the stem toward your face and make a small angle adjustment.
- Run the appropriate test and correct the side that reports a poor seal.
- Walk for 10–15 minutes, then check whether the seal and comfort remain stable.
- If the fit changes during movement, repeat the seating adjustment before moving to another size.
When the seal is good, bass should sound less hollow and external noise should be reduced more effectively with noise cancellation enabled. These are practical listening signs, not substitutes for the on-screen result: a comfortable, stable fit that remains sealed during activity is the useful endpoint.

Replacement tips: compatibility and cost
For AirPods Pro 2, Apple lists replacement ear tips in XS, S, M and L. The Apple Store figure supplied for 2026 is $9.99 for two sets; the amount is region- and time-sensitive, so the price can differ when you purchase. Confirm the generation, size and seller before ordering, especially when a listing uses “AirPods Pro” without naming the model.
| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Generation | Whether the listing explicitly supports AirPods Pro 1, 2 or 3; AirPods Pro 2 replacement guidance is not a universal statement for every generation. |
| Size | XS, S, M or L as applicable, and whether you need different sizes for left and right ears. |
| Condition | Undamaged silicone, a clean connector and a package that has not been opened or deformed. |
| Price | The current regional price, since the $9.99 figure is a 2026 Apple Store amount and may change. |
Ear Tip Fit Test versus the Hearing Test feature
Do not confuse the fit test with Apple’s Hearing Test feature. The fit test evaluates whether the ear tip is sealing; it is not designed to diagnose hearing loss or another ear condition.
Apple’s regulatory hearing-test instructions say a snug fit is important so background noise does not affect hearing-test results. Those instructions also warn that congestion, an ear or sinus infection, or loud-noise exposure during the previous 24 hours can affect hearing-test accuracy. Use a quiet room and wait when appropriate before taking a hearing test. These cautions describe the Hearing Test feature and should not be interpreted as evidence that the Ear Tip Fit Test can identify a health problem.

A practical troubleshooting checklist
- No test option: Open the connected AirPods Pro device page from Settings > Bluetooth, verify both earbuds are inserted, and check the software requirement for your generation.
- One side fails repeatedly: Reseat that AirPod, rotate the stem toward your face, adjust the angle, and test again before changing only that side’s tip.
- Both sides fail: Remove and reinstall each tip, clean the contact surfaces, confirm the connectors clicked into place, and retest in a quiet room.
- Pass but poor bass: Check for a folded tip edge or a partial seal, then repeat the movement check. Thin bass usually indicates an acoustic leak or a listening-mode change rather than a need to press harder.
- Pass but earbuds fall out: Use the 10–15-minute walking check, refine rotation and angle, and try a different size on the unstable ear.
- Discomfort after several minutes: Switch to the next smaller size or reduce insertion pressure. A painful pass is not a successful everyday fit.
- Replacement does not fit: Recheck the generation and the oval connector. AirPods Pro 2 replacement tips are specified for AirPods Pro 2 only.
When to stop adjusting
Stop experimenting once each ear has a comfortable, stable fit that passes the appropriate test and remains secure through ordinary movement. More pressure is not a better seal, and repeatedly forcing a tip into the canal can create soreness without fixing the underlying angle or size mismatch. If no tip provides a comfortable seal, use the smallest amount of time and volume that remains comfortable and consult a hearing-care professional about persistent symptoms.
Bottom line
Use Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro 1 and 2, and Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. Correct insertion and rotation before changing size, test each ear independently, and judge the final choice after 10–15 minutes of normal activity. The best tip is the one that seals without pressure, stays put while you move and consistently gives you the bass and noise cancellation you expect.
