For most Apple users, AirPods 5 are the best first choice for all-day comfort because their 4.3-gram semi-open shells avoid deep canal pressure while adding transparency and open-style noise control. They are not a universal fit: if the shells loosen when you walk or exercise, choose the retention style that matches your ear instead—Bose Ultra Open uses a cuff, Shokz OpenFit 2+ uses an ear hook, and Sony LinkBuds Open uses a stabilizing ring.

Comfort depends more on pressure and retention than on a product’s label. Fully open designs keep your ears and surroundings audible but can be overwhelmed by traffic or office noise. AirPods 5 offer the broadest compromise for Apple users; the alternatives make more sense when a hook, cuff or ring stays put better than a conventional semi-open shell.

The short answer

Earbuds Retention approach Best fit for Key published figures Main caution
Apple AirPods 5 Semi-open shell Apple users who want light comfort plus adjustable awareness 4.3 g per earbud; IP57; Bluetooth 5.3; H2; up to 6 hours with noise control off, or up to 7 hours for the wireless-charging-case model Security varies with ear geometry
Bose Ultra Open Earbuds Cuff/clip around the outer ear People who dislike silicone tips or canal pressure Open, tip-free design intended to preserve environmental awareness Clip stability depends on cartilage shape
Shokz OpenFit 2+ Ear hook Workouts and movement where mechanical retention matters most $179.95 list price in TechRadar’s February 2026 guide Hooks can conflict with glasses or hair
Sony LinkBuds Open (WF-L910) Open ring with fitting supporters Listeners who want a ring-style, highly ambient presentation $199/£149/AU$249 launch list price; up to 8 hours per earbud and 22 hours with the case Individual comfort still varies

There is no authoritative population statistic proving that any one model is comfortable for everyone all day. The available comfort evidence is anatomy-dependent reviewer experience, so treat the table as a decision guide rather than a universal ranking.

What “open-fit” means in this comparison

Open-fit earbuds leave the ear canal unsealed or only lightly covered. That differs from conventional in-ear monitors, whose silicone tips create a seal deep in the canal. A semi-open shell such as AirPods 5 rests at the entrance of the ear, while cuff, hook and ring designs anchor to other parts of the ear. The goal is to reduce the pressure, heat and occlusion that some listeners experience with sealed tips.

Open fit does not mean identical acoustics. A fully open earbud usually lets voices, traffic and announcements pass through continuously, but external noise can mask music. AirPods 5 add active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency processing to an open-style design, giving Apple users more control in a train, airport or busy office. A cuff, hook or ring remains more naturally aware because it does not attempt to seal the canal.

How to judge all-day comfort

Pressure and contact points

Pressure is the first reason to consider an open design. AirPods 5 avoid deep insertion, and Bose explicitly describes Ultra Open as having no silicone tips inside the ear. That can help listeners who develop soreness from sealed earbuds. However, a shell can still rub the concha or press on a particular cartilage ridge. A design that feels weightless in one ear may feel unstable or irritating in the other.

Retention during ordinary movement

Comfort is not useful if you are repeatedly pushing an earbud back into place. AirPods 5 rely on the shape of your outer ear, so their hold can change with head movement, perspiration or jaw motion. Hooks provide a mechanical backup around the ear and are generally the most reassuring option for exercise. Cuffs and clips hold on cartilage rather than inside the canal; their security therefore depends on the thickness and curve of your ear.

Awareness versus noise control

Open listening is valuable for conversations, cycling awareness and public announcements. It is also a compromise: a loud street or open-plan office can overwhelm a fully open driver. Apple says AirPods 5’s open-ear ANC removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is an Apple comparison claim, not a guarantee of a particular reduction in every environment. Transparency mode provides the opposite priority when you need outside sound.

Battery for a workday

Battery figures are not directly comparable unless the listening mode is specified. Apple lists AirPods 5 for up to 6 hours per charge with noise control off, or up to 7 hours for the wireless-charging-case model. In testing, Tom’s Guide reported about 5 hours with ANC or transparency enabled and 22 hours total with the case. Sony lists LinkBuds Open for up to 8 hours per earbud and 22 hours including the case. A long day may therefore require a case break, especially when noise control is active.

Apple AirPods 5: the balanced choice for Apple users

AirPods 5 are the strongest starting point when you use an iPhone, iPad or Mac and want one pair for desk work, commuting and occasional exercise. Apple lists each earbud at 4.3 g, with IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance, Bluetooth 5.3 and H2 processing. The semi-open fit avoids the deep canal seal associated with many in-ear models, while ANC and transparency add flexibility that simpler open earbuds do not provide.

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, at a launch price of $129, or $149 for the version with a wireless charging case. Those are launch/list figures; retailer pricing and availability can change by country and over time. Apple says non-Apple functionality may be limited, so Android users should not assume the same feature set or integration.

Apple’s comfort claim is supported by individual experience rather than a population study. Tom’s Guide reviewer Nick Harris-Fry wrote that “the lightweight design and the fact they don’t put pressure on any part of the ear means I can wear the AirPods 5 for long stretches without any discomfort.” In the same coverage, he cautioned that fit varies by ear shape and suggested clip-on or earhook designs when more security is needed.

Choose AirPods 5 when the shell remains stable without constant adjustment and you value the ability to switch between awareness and noise reduction. Choose something else if either earbud loosens during a brisk walk, if the shell presses on a sensitive ridge, or if you need a retention system designed around vigorous movement.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds: a tip-free cuff

Ultra Open takes pressure away from the canal by using a lightweight cuff that sits around the outer ear. Bose says there are no silicone tips inside the ear and that the design is intended to avoid canal pressure while keeping environmental sound audible. Its product description explains that conversations, announcements and environmental sounds remain audible while music plays.

This approach suits listeners who reject anything inserted into the canal or who find semi-open shells inconsistent. The cuff distributes contact around the ear rather than asking the concha to hold a small body in place. It also leaves the ear naturally open, so awareness is continuous rather than dependent on a transparency setting.

The trade-off is anatomy. A cuff is not automatically more secure than an earbud shell: stability depends on the shape and thickness of your cartilage. TechRadar’s February 2026 comparison positioned Bose Ultra Open as its premium clip-style option at a $299 list price and warned that clip stability depends on ear shape. Try both sides for several minutes, including head turns and a short walk, before deciding that the cuff is comfortable.

Shokz OpenFit 2+: the hook-first option

OpenFit 2+ is the most logical direction when retention during movement outranks the smallest possible footprint. Its ear hook provides a mechanical anchor, so the earbud does not rely solely on the concha’s shape. TechRadar’s February 2026 guide named it the best overall hook-style option at $179.95.

Hooks can be reassuring for workouts, commuting on foot and any activity where repeatedly reseating a loose earbud would be distracting. They also keep the canal open, preserving the basic awareness benefit of this category. The design is not universally comfortable, however. TechRadar warns that hooks can conflict with glasses and hair. The contact point behind the ear may become more noticeable over a long session than a light shell would be.

Check compatibility with your eyewear before buying. Put on the glasses, place the hook, then move your head and adjust the frames as you normally would. If the two pieces compete for the same space, the retention advantage may not compensate for pressure behind the ear.

Sony LinkBuds Open: ring-style ambient listening

LinkBuds Open (WF-L910) uses an open-ring driver and light fitting supporters. Sony’s design keeps environmental sound audible without an over-ear hook, making it a middle path between a conventional semi-open shell and a cuff. The fitting supporters are intended to stabilize the ring against the ear.

TechRadar lists a launch price of $199 in the United States, £149 in the United Kingdom and AU$249 in Australia. It lists up to 8 hours of battery life for the earbuds and 22 hours with the case. Those figures are manufacturer or guide specifications, not a promise that every listening mode will reach the maximum.

The ring presentation is attractive if you want strong ambient awareness and dislike anything routed over the ear. TechRadar found the fit secure but personally less comfortable than some alternatives, which illustrates why ring designs still require a personal trial. The fitting supporter must align with your ear’s contours; an incorrect size or position can turn a nominally light design into a pressure point.

Which design fits each real-world use?

Full workday at a desk

Start with AirPods 5 if you use Apple devices and can keep the shells stable. Their low listed weight and lack of deep insertion address the two common desk-session complaints: canal pressure and fatigue from a tight seal. Use transparency when colleagues need your attention and ANC when office noise is the distraction. If one ear loosens while you talk or type, a cuff or ring may be more comfortable than repeatedly adjusting the shell.

Commuting and public announcements

AirPods 5 offer the most adaptable control in this group because they combine an open-style fit with ANC and transparency. That flexibility matters on a train or in a terminal where a fully open design can be masked by engine and crowd noise. Bose Ultra Open and Sony LinkBuds Open favor continuous awareness, which is useful when hearing every announcement matters more than reducing background sound.

Walking and workouts

Choose the hook-style OpenFit 2+ when your priority is keeping the earbuds attached through movement. AirPods 5 can work for exercise if your ear geometry holds them securely and their IP57 rating matches your exposure to dust, sweat and water, but the rating does not solve a loose fit. A cuff can be secure for some ears and unstable for others, so test it with the exact motions you perform.

Glasses, long hair or headwear

Do not assume a hook is automatically the comfortable answer. The hook and the arms of glasses may occupy the same area behind your ear, and hair can interfere with placement. In that situation, compare a semi-open shell and ring design first. A cuff may also work, but its clip position must be checked with your glasses and hair in place.

A practical fit test before you keep a pair

  1. Start with clean, dry ears. Oil, sweat and hair can change friction, so test the earbuds under realistic but repeatable conditions.
  2. Wear both sides for 20 to 30 minutes. Notice pressure at the canal entrance, concha, cartilage and—on hooks or cuffs—the area behind the ear.
  3. Speak, chew and turn your head. Jaw motion and conversation reveal whether a shell gradually walks out of position.
  4. Walk briskly and reproduce your workout movement. A pair that is comfortable while seated may fail when you climb stairs, bend over or swing your arms.
  5. Add your glasses, helmet or hat. Accessories can change the contact points, especially for hooks and cuffs.
  6. Check awareness at a safe volume. Confirm that you can hear the people and signals you need to hear; do not use open earbuds as a substitute for traffic awareness.
  7. Test the modes you will actually use. Compare noise control off, ANC and transparency on AirPods 5, because battery life and perceived isolation change with the mode.
  8. Use a return-friendly seller. Comfort cannot be predicted reliably from weight or another person’s review, so preserve the option to return a model that causes pressure or slips.

How to choose without overvaluing a single specification

Weight is useful but incomplete. AirPods 5’s 4.3 g per earbud explains why they may disappear during a long session, yet a heavier hook can feel better if it prevents constant repositioning. Likewise, an IP rating describes resistance to dust and water exposure; it does not describe whether the earbud will stay seated during your workout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery maximums also need context. AirPods 5’s six-hour figure is for noise control off, while the seven-hour figure applies to the wireless-charging-case model as listed by Apple. ANC and transparency reduce the practical runtime reported by Tom’s Guide. Sony’s eight-hour earbud figure and 22-hour case total are useful comparison points, but they do not establish greater comfort or identical listening conditions.

Price should be treated as a market reference, not a permanent ranking. AirPods 5 launched at $129 or $149 with a wireless charging case; TechRadar listed Shokz OpenFit 2+ at $179.95 and Bose Ultra Open at $299 in February 2026; Sony’s launch list prices vary by region. Check the price and stock in your country before purchase.

Apple ecosystem and device choice

AirPods 5 make the most sense when your daily devices are Apple products, because Apple positions the feature set around that ecosystem and warns that non-Apple functionality may be limited. The alternatives are better considered on physical fit first: a hook, cuff or ring can solve a retention problem that software integration cannot. If you use Android or mix platforms, verify which controls and modes are available on your phone before treating AirPods 5 as an equal-feature option.

What the evidence can—and cannot—prove

Manufacturer specifications establish weight, ratings, battery claims, design intent and launch prices. Reviewer accounts add useful real-world observations: Tom’s Guide found AirPods 5 comfortable for long stretches without ear pressure, while TechRadar described the Sony fit as secure but less comfortable for that reviewer than some alternatives. Those observations help identify what to test, but they do not represent every ear shape.

No authoritative study establishes a percentage of people who can wear any of these earbuds comfortably all day. Treat “all-day” as a personal outcome measured by pressure, stability and fatigue over your actual routine. A return period and a careful fit test are more reliable than choosing from a universal comfort ranking.

Verdict

Buy AirPods 5 first if you are an Apple user, want the lightest listed design in this group, and your ear shape holds a semi-open shell securely. Their ANC and transparency make them the most versatile for moving between quiet work, commuting and crowded places.

Switch by retention style when the shell fails your fit test: choose Shokz OpenFit 2+ for a hook that prioritizes workout security, Bose Ultra Open for a tip-free cuff that minimizes canal contact, or Sony LinkBuds Open for a ring-style design that keeps the presentation highly ambient without an over-ear hook. None is universally comfortable; the right choice is the one that remains stable without creating a new pressure point.
