Airbus is the largest of the three by disclosed space-and-defence scale, Thales Alenia Space is a broad, multinational joint venture with particular strength in telecommunications, navigation and orbital infrastructure, and OHB is a smaller German group focused on institutional space systems, launch access and digital services. The comparison is not a strict market-share league table: Airbus reports Defence and Space figures, Thales Alenia Space reports figures for its joint venture, and OHB publishes group output and segment data on different bases.
For a quick choice, think of Airbus for industrial scale and a very wide mission portfolio; Thales Alenia Space for complex communications, navigation, exploration and infrastructure programs delivered through a pan-European network; and OHB for focused systems engineering and European institutional programs. All three compete for major contracts, while also working together in consortia and supply chains.
What the comparison shows
Europe does not have one single “satellite manufacturer” business model. Airbus combines spacecraft with a much larger defence-and-space organization and operates at high industrial volume. Thales Alenia Space is a dedicated space joint venture owned by Thales and Leonardo, with capabilities that run from telecommunications and navigation to science and orbital infrastructure. OHB is a more concentrated German space group whose Space Systems segment carries most of its backlog, supported by launch-access and digital businesses.

That difference matters when interpreting size. Airbus’s published number covers its Defence and Space division, not only satellites. Thales Alenia Space’s number describes the joint venture. OHB’s headline 2025 figure is total output, while its 2024 financial release also gives group revenue and segment backlog. These are useful indicators of scale, but they are not an audited, like-for-like ranking of satellite-manufacturing revenue.

The figures come from different reporting scopes and years, so the table should be read as context rather than a precise ranking. No directly comparable market-share statistic covering all three manufacturers establishes a percentage leader.
Airbus Defence and Space
Scale and industrial model
Airbus brings the broadest industrial base in this group. Its space activity sits inside Defence and Space, a division that also includes non-satellite defence work. That structure gives Airbus access to large procurement, engineering and manufacturing resources, but it also means the division’s financial totals are wider than a pure spacecraft comparison.
The company describes a repeatable production rhythm: roughly a dozen satellites leave its cleanrooms each year. Its main French space centers in Toulouse, Elancourt and Sophia Antipolis support design, integration, testing and program management. This is a serial-production mindset rather than a business built only around occasional bespoke spacecraft.

Mission portfolio
Airbus supplies telecommunications satellites, optical and radar Earth-observation systems for civilian and military users, science missions, exploration spacecraft and defence satellites. The combination of imaging, communications and security programs gives it a portfolio that can absorb different government and commercial cycles.
Its exploration role includes prime-contractor responsibility for six European Service Modules for NASA’s Orion spacecraft under the European Space Agency. Those modules provide propulsion, power, thermal control and other services for Orion, illustrating that Airbus’s space business extends beyond Earth-orbit satellites.

Where Airbus is strongest

Airbus itself identifies Thales Alenia Space and OHB among its principal European telecommunications-satellite competitors. That statement describes direct competitive overlap in telecom programs, not an assertion that every Airbus and OHB or Thales Alenia Space activity competes for the same contracts.

Thales Alenia Space is a 67% Thales/33% Leonardo joint venture. Unlike Airbus’s space activity within a diversified division, it is organized as a dedicated space company. Mission portfolio
The company’s stated portfolio includes telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation, environmental monitoring, defence, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures. That range places it close to Airbus in breadth, although the emphasis and program mix differ from one contract to another.
Navigation is a visible area of responsibility: Thales Alenia Space is building six of the 12 Galileo Second Generation satellites and is involved in associated ground mission work. Galileo is the European Union’s global navigation satellite system, so this work combines spacecraft production with mission and ground-segment interfaces.

OHB SE
Structure and specialization
OHB is organized into three segments: Space Systems, Access to Space and Digital. That structure explains why it is often described as a focused systems house rather than a conglomerate on Airbus’s scale. Space Systems covers satellite design, integration and related mission work; Access to Space addresses launch-related activities; Digital covers satellite operations and data-oriented services.
OHB’s 2024 backlog shows the concentration clearly: Space Systems held €1,968 million, compared with €244 million for Aerospace and €171 million for Digital. The backlog is not the same as annual revenue, but it indicates where the group’s contracted future work is centered.

Airbus: industrial throughput
Airbus highlights serial production and a network of cleanrooms. That model is valuable when a constellation or recurring spacecraft family requires repeatable manufacturing, common qualification logic and predictable supply-chain management. It can also support one-off science and exploration missions by reusing mature engineering processes, although bespoke missions still require substantial design and testing.
Thales Alenia Space: distributed integration
Thales Alenia Space’s multi-country network is suited to programs that need specialized national capabilities and coordinated workshare. Its role in navigation, telecommunications, science and orbital infrastructure requires integration across spacecraft, payloads, ground systems and international partners. Customers should examine interface ownership and decision rights early, because a distributed industrial team succeeds only when responsibilities are explicit.

OHB: focused systems execution
OHB’s identity is closer to a systems house: define the mission architecture, manage suppliers and partners, integrate the spacecraft, complete environmental and functional qualification, and deliver an operational system. The model can be efficient for institutional missions that value a clear prime contractor, while its smaller scale may limit the parallel production capacity available for very large constellations.
Institutional programs and European strategic roles
Galileo Second Generation
Thales Alenia Space is building six of the 12 Galileo Second Generation satellites and supplying associated ground mission work. This makes it the clearest answer to “Who builds Galileo satellites?” among the three companies in the evidence available for this comparison. Galileo itself involves multiple industrial partners, so naming Thales Alenia Space does not mean it is the sole supplier for the entire constellation.
Orion European Service Modules
Airbus is ESA prime contractor for six Orion European Service Modules. The program demonstrates Airbus’s role in exploration infrastructure and in integrating power, propulsion, thermal and other spacecraft functions for a crewed deep-space vehicle.
LISA mission cooperation
In June 2025, Thales Alenia Space signed a €263 million contract with OHB System AG for key elements of ESA’s LISA mission. LISA is a space-based observatory designed to study gravitational waves. The contract is a concrete example of cooperation between companies that can also compete for other European programs: one firm’s system-level capability can be combined with another’s specialized elements.
Competition, cooperation and the next industrial chapter
Proposed Airbus–Leonardo–Thales space company
In October 2025, Airbus, Leonardo and Thales signed a memorandum of understanding to combine their space activities in a proposed new company. The announced ownership split is Airbus 35%, Leonardo 32.5% and Thales 32.5%. The transaction remains subject to completion and regulatory or other required approvals, so it should be treated as a proposal rather than an operating company that already exists.

If completed, such a structure could change how Europe organizes spacecraft, payload and infrastructure work. It would also require decisions about governance, product overlap, national workshare and integration of existing sites and programs. Until approvals and implementation are complete, the three current organizations should be evaluated on their existing capabilities.
IRIS² secure connectivity constellation
For the European Union’s IRIS² secure connectivity program, Airbus says Airbus and Thales Alenia Space are responsible for the first low-Earth-orbit layer of at least 66 satellites, targeted for delivery in 2029. Airbus is to produce the platforms and integrate Thales payloads. The arrangement shows how the companies can be competitors at prime-contract level while combining complementary spacecraft and payload expertise within one constellation.
Which manufacturer fits which requirement?
Choose Airbus when scale and breadth dominate
- You need a supplier able to manage large recurring production or a mixed civil-defence portfolio.
- The mission combines communications, Earth observation, security and exploration requirements.
- You value extensive cleanroom capacity and a supplier with experience in both satellites and deep-space infrastructure.
Choose Thales Alenia Space when multinational capability is central
- The program requires navigation, telecommunications, environmental monitoring or orbital-infrastructure expertise.
- European workshare across several countries is an important procurement or policy objective.
- The architecture includes difficult interfaces between spacecraft, payloads and ground mission systems.
Choose OHB when a focused institutional prime is preferable
- You want a systems house centered on spacecraft delivery and program execution.
- The mission benefits from a prime contractor experienced in European institutional procurement.
- Launch access and digital operations are relevant alongside the spacecraft itself.
These are selection lenses, not universal rankings. A real procurement would still depend on mission orbit, payload mass and power, security classification, export controls, schedule, national eligibility, technology readiness, financing and the proposed industrial team.
What “biggest” means in this market
On the disclosed figures used here, Airbus is clearly the largest organization by Defence and Space revenue, order-book scale and industrial footprint. Thales Alenia Space is a substantial dedicated space company with a larger stated workforce than its revenue comparison alone might suggest, reflecting its multinational scope and reporting basis. OHB is smaller overall and more concentrated in Space Systems, but its backlog demonstrates a significant role in European institutional missions.
Because the accounting scopes differ, “biggest European satellite manufacturer” should be answered with a qualification: Airbus is biggest by the disclosed Defence and Space scale in this comparison, not by a directly measured, all-company satellite-manufacturing market share. Thales Alenia Space and OHB remain major program participants, and contract leadership can vary by mission class.
Bottom line
Airbus is the scale leader and the broadest industrial platform. Thales Alenia Space is the strongest like-for-like alternative for a dedicated, multinational space company with deep communications, navigation and infrastructure capability. OHB is the focused systems specialist, with a concentrated institutional backlog and additional launch-access and digital businesses. The right choice depends less on a simple size ranking than on the mission’s required portfolio, workshare, production rate and institutional interfaces.
