Yes, DNA can be collected from indoor air and settled dust. People continuously shed skin cells and other biological material; some of that material becomes airborne or settles on surfaces and can be recovered for forensic DNA profiling. A resulting profile can associate a person with an environment even when investigators find no obvious stain or touched object.

That association is not a timestamp or an explanation of conduct. Air and dust can retain DNA from earlier occupants, receive secondary transfers, and be contaminated during collection. Airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) is therefore best used alongside fingerprints, CCTV and conventional DNA exhibits, with activity-level conclusions stated cautiously.

What airborne eDNA is—and what a profile actually means

Airborne eDNA is human DNA recovered from particles suspended in air or from dust that has accumulated indoors. It is not a new kind of genetic material: the laboratory ultimately analyzes DNA using forensic profiling methods. The difference is the evidence source. Instead of a visible bloodstain, saliva deposit or clearly touched item, investigators sample the room itself.

Human DNA can reach an environment through ordinary shedding, breathing, coughing, movement and contact with clothing or skin. Air currents can move particles, while settled dust can be disturbed and re-aerosolized. The 2024 work by Chiara Fantinato, Peter Gill and Ane Elida Fonneløp describes DNA as transferable to surfaces and items by touch, releasable into air and depositable in indoor dust.

What a positive result can support

A recovered profile may support the proposition that a person’s DNA entered, or was present in, the sampled environment. If the profile is sufficiently complete and statistically strong, it can be compared with a reference sample from a known person. That is an association, not proof that the person committed an offense, touched a particular object or was present at a specific minute.

What it cannot establish on its own

  • Exact timing: Air and dust may contain DNA from current and past occupants.
  • Activity: A profile does not show whether someone entered deliberately, was carried in by another person or was represented through secondary transfer.
  • Location within a room: Air sampling generally describes the sampled air volume, not a precise point of contact.
  • Identity certainty from a weak mixture: Low-template or mixed profiles can require probabilistic interpretation and may be inconclusive.

How investigators collect and analyze air DNA

Airborne eDNA is a sampling-and-interpretation workflow. Every stage affects whether a useful profile is recovered and how confidently it can be attributed.

  1. Define the sampling question. Investigators document the room, suspected entry and exit routes, occupancy history, cleaning, ventilation and the time between the event and collection. A control strategy is planned before devices are operated.
  2. Collect airborne particles. A validated air sampler draws a measured volume through a collection medium. The operator records start and stop times, flow conditions, sampler position and environmental observations. Orientation and distance from people can influence recovery, and pilot work has not resolved the best configuration for every setting.
  3. Collect settled dust and surface controls. Dust samples can reveal persistent background DNA and help interpret what the air sampler detected. Nearby surfaces, unused collection media and equipment blanks provide controls for contamination and transfer.
  4. Extract and quantify DNA. The laboratory removes DNA from the collection medium, measures the available template and assesses whether inhibition or degradation is likely to affect profiling.
  5. Generate and interpret a profile. Analysts use forensic DNA markers and compare the resulting profile with reference samples. Mixed or partial profiles are evaluated statistically rather than treated as an all-or-nothing identification.
  6. Report an activity-level conclusion. The report should distinguish the strength of the genetic association from the separate question of how the DNA arrived and when. Alternative explanations, background occupants and secondary transfer belong in that assessment.

Variables that change recovery

A pilot study found that occupancy level and sampling duration affected the amount and quality of DNA recovered from air. Individual shedding varies substantially, so one person may contribute far more detectable material than another. Ventilation, room size, airflow, humidity, disturbance of dust, cleaning and the interval after occupancy also matter. The study left sampler orientation and participant distance as open variables, which means a protocol that works in one room cannot automatically be assumed to perform the same way elsewhere.

What the published studies show

Office sampling with occupant references

In office sampling, researchers compared DNA profiles from surfaces with reference profiles from occupants. Parallel air and dust samples helped characterize transfer and occupancy. This design is useful because known occupants make it possible to test whether environmental samples reflect the people who regularly use a space, but it does not recreate every condition of a crime scene.

The 2023 Scientific Reports study

A 2023 Scientific Reports study concluded that air and dust could identify current and past occupants. It also documented environmental background DNA, secondary transfer and contamination concerns. One important finding was that an absent high-shedder could appear in a room after colleagues’ ordinary activity because dust was re-aerosolized. A profile in air, therefore, may represent a person who is not currently in the room.

The 2024 forensic review

A 2024 review characterized air eDNA as an emerging forensic application. It noted that trace and touch DNA generally have poorer success rates than larger biological deposits such as blood. That comparison matters: the absence of a profile from air is not evidence that a person was absent, and a partial profile from air may be less informative than a robust profile from a defined stain.

The 2026 simulated-burglary experiment

The strongest burglary-specific figure currently available comes from a controlled 2026 study, not from a universal field-performance claim. Researchers collected 391 samples in 22 households. After a 15-minute simulated burglary, air samples taken 30 minutes later detected intruder profiles in 82% of cases in one laboratory and 36% in the other.

The difference between laboratories is itself a result. The authors attributed variation to laboratory procedures, household conditions, individual shedding, cleaning and other environmental factors. The percentages describe detection under that study’s design; they are not the probability that any real burglar will be identified at a crime scene.

Study or evidence What it supports Important qualification
Office air, dust and surface sampling Environmental samples can be compared with known occupant references and can reveal transfer patterns. Known-occupant settings do not capture every crime-scene variable.
Scientific Reports, 2023 Air and dust may identify current and past occupants. Background DNA, secondary transfer and re-aerosolized dust can mislead timing and activity inferences.
Forensic review, 2024 Air eDNA is a developing forensic application. Trace and touch DNA generally perform less consistently than larger deposits such as blood.
Pilot sampling study Occupancy and sampling duration affect recovered DNA quantity and quality. Optimal sampler orientation and participant distance remain uncertain.
Simulated burglary, 2026 Intruder profiles were detected after a short controlled visit. 82% in one laboratory versus 36% in another; controlled-study performance, not a field guarantee.

Airborne eDNA compared with other evidence

Evidence type What is collected Main strength Main limitation
Airborne eDNA Airborne particles and settled dust containing human DNA Samples an environment when no obvious touched item or stain is available; may detect recent occupants. Shared-space background, secondary transfer, contamination and variable shedding make timing and activity difficult to infer.
Fingerprints Ridge-pattern impressions, usually latent prints A clear ridge impression provides a direct physical-feature comparison; latent-print analysis is an established forensic technology category. Requires a recoverable impression, which may be absent, partial, smudged or intentionally removed.
CCTV Video frames, timestamps and facial imagery Shows behavior and temporal context; facial-image algorithms can assist identity assessment. Occlusion, image quality, camera placement, retention periods and algorithmic bias can limit interpretation.
Traditional DNA Blood, saliva, hair, touch deposits or another defined biological trace Uses a well-established profile-comparison workflow with a defined exhibit and reference sample. Trace mixtures, low quantity, transfer and contamination still require probabilistic interpretation.

Fingerprints: stronger activity information when a clear print exists

A latent fingerprint records a person’s ridge detail at a particular contact location. When the impression is sufficiently clear, its position and orientation can support a more direct account of contact than an air sample can. A print on the inside of a forced window, for example, has physical context that an airborne profile lacks.

Fingerprints are not guaranteed. Smooth and porous surfaces differ, prints can be partial or smudged, and deliberate wiping can remove or degrade them. A failed fingerprint search does not make airborne eDNA a substitute with equivalent certainty; it simply leaves investigators considering a different evidence source.

CCTV: the evidence that supplies time and behavior

Video can show when a person approached, entered, moved through and left a location. That temporal and behavioral context is the principal advantage over both airborne eDNA and fingerprints. A camera may also capture clothing, tools, vehicles or interactions that help investigators test competing explanations.

Interpretation depends on the recording itself. Occlusion, low light, compression, camera angle, frame rate and missing time periods can prevent a reliable comparison. Facial-image algorithms may assist an assessment, but an algorithmic match remains dependent on image quality, validation and the potential for bias. Video retention and chain-of-custody documentation also matter.

Traditional DNA: defined exhibits remain the reference point

Blood, saliva, hair and touch deposits are collected from identified items or locations. The exhibit can be documented, packaged and compared with a reference sample using established laboratory procedures. A large, single-source deposit is usually easier to interpret than a low-level environmental mixture.

Traditional DNA is not automatically conclusive. Touch DNA can be sparse, mixtures can contain several contributors, and secondary transfer and contamination must still be considered. The practical distinction is that investigators know more about what was sampled and where it was found. Air eDNA often provides broader environmental coverage at the cost of less specific activity information.

Reliability, contamination and admissibility

Association evidence versus activity-level evidence

The central interpretive error is treating “DNA from this person was detected” as “this person committed the burglary.” A scientifically defensible report separates the genetic question from the activity question. The genetic result may support that a person’s DNA is represented in a sample. The activity-level assessment asks whether that representation is more likely under the prosecution’s account or under alternatives such as prior occupancy, transfer on clothing, shared dust or contamination.

Controls and chain of custody

Air sampling requires unusually careful controls because the sampled medium is mobile and the room may contain background DNA. Investigators should document who entered, when equipment was opened, where samplers were placed, how media were sealed and which blanks were run. Cleaning records, ventilation settings and known occupants should be preserved rather than treated as incidental details.

Mixtures and low-template results

Air and dust may contain DNA from several people. A partial or mixed profile can be statistically informative, inconclusive or vulnerable to competing explanations depending on its quality. Analysts should report the statistical strength and limitations of the result, not convert a complex mixture into a categorical identification.

Legal admissibility

Whether a court admits airborne eDNA depends on the jurisdiction, the laboratory’s validation, the collection method, quality controls, statistical interpretation and the expert’s ability to explain limitations. The emerging status of the method means attorneys and courts may examine external validation and standardization more closely than they would for established fingerprint or DNA procedures. A court’s decision is case-specific; a positive laboratory result does not guarantee admission or a particular evidentiary weight.

Could air DNA identify a burglar after a short visit?

It can sometimes provide a profile after a short visit, but it cannot promise identification. In the 2026 simulated-burglary study, a 15-minute visit followed by air collection 30 minutes later produced detectable intruder profiles in 82% of cases at one laboratory and 36% at another. Those results show feasibility and substantial variability at the same time.

How to interpret a positive result

  • Confirm that the profile is above the laboratory’s reporting threshold and assess whether it is single-source or mixed.
  • Compare it with reference samples from residents, workers, emergency personnel and anyone who legitimately entered before collection.
  • Check whether dust movement, ventilation or shared equipment could explain secondary transfer.
  • Use CCTV, access records, fingerprints and defined biological exhibits to test when and how the person could have been present.

How to interpret a negative result

A negative air sample does not exclude a visitor. Recovery depends on shedding, airflow, sampler duration and environmental conditions; the 2024 review also notes poorer success for trace material than for larger deposits. A person may leave no detectable airborne profile even after entering, while another person’s DNA may persist from an earlier occupancy.

When airborne eDNA is most useful

  • No obvious biological stain or touched item: Room-wide sampling may provide a lead when targeted exhibits are unavailable.
  • Occupancy questions: Air and dust can help characterize current and past users of a space, provided background is modeled.
  • Corroboration: A profile can add an independent line of evidence to fingerprints, video or access-control records.
  • Early investigative screening: Results may suggest whose references should be compared, while still requiring confirmatory interpretation.

When it should not be treated as decisive

  • The room is shared and occupant history is unknown.
  • Sampling occurred after extensive cleaning, construction or unusual dust disturbance.
  • Controls show contamination or the chain of custody is incomplete.
  • The profile is very low-level, highly mixed or statistically weak.
  • The conclusion depends on a precise time of deposition that air and dust cannot establish.

Practical collection checklist for investigators

  1. Record the scene’s normal occupants, recent visitors, cleaning and ventilation before sampling.
  2. Secure the area and limit personnel movement to reduce new shedding.
  3. Use validated samplers and document flow, duration, orientation, distance and room conditions.
  4. Collect equipment blanks, field blanks and representative dust or surface controls.
  5. Package each medium separately, seal it immediately and maintain a complete custody log.
  6. Submit known references from legitimate occupants and responders for comparison.
  7. Ask the laboratory to report profile quality, mixture status, statistical strength and activity-level limitations.
  8. Interpret the result with fingerprints, CCTV, access logs and conventional DNA rather than in isolation.

Where the field is heading

The 2023 and 2024 findings establish a credible use case but also show why standards are needed. Laboratories need protocols that specify sampling volume, duration, device placement, controls, extraction methods and reporting language. The 2026 laboratory-to-laboratory difference demonstrates that a method can be promising while still lacking a single predictable success rate across households and facilities.

Future validation should test different room sizes, ventilation systems, occupancy patterns, cleaning schedules and delay intervals, with transparent reporting of false negatives, mixtures and background contributors. Until those studies produce more consistent performance estimates, airborne eDNA is best framed as complementary evidence rather than a replacement for a clear fingerprint, usable video or a well-documented biological exhibit.

Bottom line

Airborne eDNA can recover human genetic material from air and dust and may associate people with an indoor environment after a short visit. Its value is greatest when investigators have no obvious stain or touched item and can combine the result with other evidence. Because shedding, airflow, past occupants, secondary transfer and contamination strongly affect interpretation—and because the 2026 burglary study found 82% detection in one laboratory versus 36% in another—it should not be used alone to claim when a person arrived, what they did or that they were the burglar.
