Both can substantially reduce wildfire-smoke particles. A well-sealed box fan fitted with a MERV 13 filter can deliver exceptional clean-air delivery for little money, while a commercial mechanical HEPA purifier is ready to use, easier to place, and usually quieter and more compact. The better choice is the one that supplies enough smoke CADR for your room and that you can run safely and continuously.
Choose a DIY unit when availability, budget, or maximum CADR per dollar matters. Choose a commercial purifier when you want published specifications, convenient controls, lower noise, or a smaller footprint. Neither option should be treated as proof that every gas or VOC in wildfire smoke has been removed.
What actually determines performance
Wildfire smoke contains fine particles, including PM2.5, that mechanical filters can capture. A purifier’s filter label alone does not tell you how quickly it will clean a room. The useful comparison is clean-air delivery rate (CADR): the amount of filtered air delivered per unit of time for the pollutant being tested.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →EPA recommends a portable cleaner with a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for at least 200 CFM of smoke CADR. The recommendation is a sizing floor, not a promise that one setting will instantly remove smoke. Closing windows and doors when safe, reducing leaks, and running the cleaner continuously all affect the result.

| Room area | Minimum smoke CADR using EPA’s two-thirds rule | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | About 67 CFM | Small bedroom or office |
| 200 sq. ft. | About 133 CFM | Bedroom or small living room |
| 300 sq. ft. | 200 CFM | Medium bedroom or living room |
| 500 sq. ft. | About 333 CFM | Large open room |
| 700 sq. ft. | About 467 CFM | Large open-plan area |
These calculations use floor area, as EPA’s guidance does. A very tall room, a highly leaky building, or a space with doors opening frequently may need more capacity. If you have several cleaners, their effective CADRs can be combined when they operate in the same room, but placement and noise may make one larger unit preferable.
EPA’s measured box-fan designs
EPA’s page Research on DIY Air Cleaners to Reduce Wildfire Smoke Indoors, updated July 6, 2026, reports laboratory measurements from a 2022 study using simulated wildfire smoke. The figures below are CADR in cubic feet per minute; the plus-or-minus values show the reported measurement variation.
| DIY configuration | Measured smoke CADR | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| One 1-inch MERV 13 filter on a box fan | 111 ± 1 CFM | Basic one-filter arrangement |
| One 1-inch MERV 13 filter with a cardboard shroud | 156 ± 4 CFM | About 40% higher than the basic design |
| One 4-inch MERV 13 filter with a cardboard shroud | 248 ± 15 CFM | About 123% higher than the basic one-filter design |
| Two 1-inch MERV 13 filters with a cardboard shroud | 263 ± 22 CFM | More filter area, with additional resistance and bulk |
| Four 1-inch MERV 13 filters in a Corsi-Rosenthal box with a shroud | 401 ± 31 CFM | Highest configuration measured in the table |
The results show why “MERV 13” by itself is not a performance guarantee. Filter efficiency, fan airflow, pressure resistance, sealing, and the total filter area all matter. A shroud reduces the gap between the fan’s intake and the filter, so less air bypasses the filter. The laboratory numbers are not a guarantee for every fan, filter brand, room, or build.

For scale, the basic 111-CFM design meets the two-thirds guideline for a room of roughly 167 square feet. The four-filter 401-CFM design meets that guideline for roughly 600 square feet, assuming the room and operating conditions are comparable to the test. These are sizing illustrations, not a substitute for a product’s own measured CADR.
When a commercial purifier is the better choice
Published smoke CADR and predictable operation
A commercial mechanical HEPA or pleated-filter purifier normally provides a published smoke CADR, fan-speed controls, a filter-change indicator, and a housing designed to prevent bypass. Select a model whose smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of your room’s square footage. If a manufacturer lists CADR for another pollutant but not smoke, do not silently treat the figures as interchangeable.

Lower effort and smaller footprint
Commercial units arrive assembled, can be moved by one person, and generally fit more easily beside a bed or under a desk. Their controls make it simple to select a continuous or high setting. This convenience is valuable during an evacuation or a rapidly changing smoke event, when there may be no time to source filters, cut cardboard, and test a fan.
Noise, controls, and ongoing cost
Commercial models can cost more initially and require proprietary or size-specific replacement filters. Check the replacement-filter price and availability before buying. A lower fan setting is quieter but delivers less clean air; compare the CADR at the setting you can tolerate for many hours, not only the maximum setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOzone considerations
Choose a mechanical unit and, where available, a product certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to limit ozone emissions. EPA does not recommend ionizers and other ozone-producing technologies for smoke removal. Mechanical HEPA and pleated filters trap particles without intentionally producing ozone.
When a box-fan filter is the better choice
Maximum CADR per dollar
A box fan and a 20-by-20-inch MERV 13 furnace filter can produce substantial airflow at a relatively low purchase cost, especially when commercial purifiers are sold out. Four-sided Corsi-Rosenthal boxes use four 1-inch filters to expose much more filter area to the fan. A 4-inch filter is another way to increase area while keeping a single-filter layout.
Availability during a smoke event
Standard furnace filters and box fans are often stocked by hardware and home-supply stores even when portable purifiers are unavailable. Availability is not guaranteed, so assemble and test the unit before smoke arrives rather than waiting for hazardous outdoor conditions.

Trade-offs
- DIY units can be louder and produce more noticeable heat than a commercial purifier.
- The finished assembly is larger and less attractive, and it may be awkward to carry between rooms.
- You must inspect the filter, verify the seal, and replace the filter yourself.
- Fan and filter combinations vary, so the EPA measurements should be treated as reference values rather than a rating for your exact build.
How to build a safer single-fan cleaner
Gather the components
- A newer box fan, preferably 2012 or later, with a visible UL or ETL mark.
- One 20-by-20-inch MERV 13 filter for a basic build, or a 4-inch MERV 13 filter for greater capacity.
- Foam tape, painter’s tape, or another removable sealing material.
- Rigid cardboard for a shroud if the fan’s frame does not seal closely to the filter.
Use the filter’s airflow-direction arrow to orient it correctly. The arrow should point toward the fan so air passes through the filter before reaching the fan.

Assembly steps
- Place the fan on a stable, level surface with its intake side facing the filter.
- Center the filter against the intake and seal the perimeter. Any open gap allows smoky air to bypass the filter.
- For a shroud, cut cardboard to cover the fan’s intake frame, cut an opening aligned with the fan, and tape it so air is pulled through the filter rather than around it. The EPA testing found that a shroud increased CADR by about 40% in the one-filter design.
- For a Corsi-Rosenthal box, connect four 1-inch MERV 13 filters into a square with their arrows pointing inward, seal the corners, and place the fan on top so it draws air through the filters. Add a shroud around the fan intake when the design allows.
- Run the fan briefly and inspect every edge for movement, rattling, or visible gaps. Correct the seal before relying on the cleaner.
Operating the unit
Keep the intake and outlet unobstructed. Set the fan to the highest speed you can tolerate, particularly while outdoor smoke is entering the building, and run it continuously in the occupied room. A clean-air room with the door closed is more effective than moving a single small unit among several open rooms.
How to deploy a commercial purifier
- Measure the room’s floor area and calculate two-thirds of that number in CFM.
- Check the manufacturer’s smoke CADR, not just a generic airflow or filter-efficiency claim.
- Place the purifier where air can enter and leave freely, away from curtains, furniture, and walls that block the intake.
- Close windows and exterior doors when safe, and reduce obvious leaks around the room.
- Run the purifier continuously at the highest tolerable setting while smoke levels are elevated.
- Check the filter according to the indicator and by visual inspection; heavy smoke can load a filter faster than normal household dust.
If the purifier is rated below the room’s target CADR, use it in a smaller closed room or add another unit. EPA describes portable and DIY cleaners as single-room devices; they do not replace whole-building ventilation controls.
Side-by-side comparison
| Consideration | Box-fan/MERV 13 or Corsi-Rosenthal cleaner | Commercial mechanical HEPA purifier |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke-particle removal | Strong when sealed and sized correctly; EPA measured 111 to 401 CFM across tested designs | Strong when the published smoke CADR meets the room target |
| Up-front cost | Usually lower, especially with a basic filter and fan; exact prices vary by market | Usually higher; model and region determine the price |
| Replacement cost | Standard MERV 13 filters are widely available; replacement frequency depends on smoke loading | Replacement filters can be proprietary and more expensive; verify availability |
| Noise and heat | Often louder and warmer at high speed | Many models offer quieter low settings and engineered airflow |
| Size and portability | Bulky, particularly with four filters | Usually more compact and easier to move |
| Setup | Requires assembly, sealing, and safety checks | Ready to run after unpacking |
| Specifications | Performance varies; use EPA’s measured designs as a reference | Published CADR and controls are easier to compare |
| Safety confidence | Use a 2012-or-newer UL- or ETL-marked fan and follow precautions | Factory enclosure and certification options simplify unattended operation |
| Ozone | Mechanical filtration itself does not intentionally generate ozone | Prefer mechanical models and CARB-certified products; avoid ionizers |
Safety rules for DIY fans
EPA’s collaboration with UL tested five fan models, including severe blocked-airflow scenarios, and observed no fire hazards in those tests. That testing does not represent every fan, filter, or homemade configuration. Reduce risk with the following practices:
- Use a 2012-or-newer fan carrying a UL or ETL mark.
- Follow the fan manufacturer’s instructions and keep the motor housing dry.
- Do not use a damaged fan, frayed cord, loose plug, or crushed filter.
- Avoid extension cords; connect the fan directly to an appropriate wall outlet.
- Keep working smoke detectors in the room.
- Do not leave an older or untested fan running unattended or while you sleep.
- Keep the assembly away from heaters, water, and anything that can block the intake or exhaust.
Commercial equipment is not risk-free, but its enclosure and controls can make continuous or unattended use more comfortable for many households. Follow its manual and stop using any unit that overheats, sparks, or develops an abnormal smell.

Filter checks and maintenance
When to inspect
Check a DIY or commercial filter frequently during a smoke episode. A filter that looks dark or visibly dirty, or that carries a persistent smoke smell, needs attention. Heavy smoke can require replacement sooner than the nominal interval printed for ordinary dust conditions.
What to replace
Replace the filter rather than washing a disposable MERV 13 or HEPA element. A loaded filter increases resistance and can reduce airflow. On a DIY unit, reseal the new filter’s edges and verify the arrow direction. On a commercial unit, use the specified replacement size and reset the indicator only after installing a new filter.
Keeping airflow effective
Dust the fan’s exterior and keep grilles clear, but do not disassemble electrical parts unless the manual permits it. Place either type of cleaner so the intake is not pressed against a wall or hidden behind furniture.
Particles are not the same as gases and VOCs
CADR measurements in the EPA table describe removal of simulated wildfire-smoke particles. They do not establish complete removal of carbon monoxide, aldehydes, or every other gas and volatile organic compound (VOC) present in smoke. The EPA page notes that its related VOC evaluation was still awaiting peer-reviewed publication as of the July 6, 2026 update.

What field experience says about usability
An EPA-described 2021 field pilot in Hoopa, California associated both DIY cleaners and commercial portable cleaners with reduced infiltrated indoor PM2.5. Greater use was associated with improved composite health scores. The study was small: six participants contributed to the PM2.5 analysis and ten to the health-score analysis. It therefore informs direction and usability rather than proving that one design always wins.
Noise was the main barrier to DIY use in that pilot. Quiet operation and small size favored commercial units. This matters because a theoretically powerful cleaner that residents switch off is less protective than a somewhat quieter unit that runs continuously.
Choosing for common situations
You need the most clean air for the least money
Build a sealed DIY cleaner with a shroud. If floor space and budget allow, use a 4-inch MERV 13 filter or a four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal layout. Verify that the fan is newer, UL- or ETL-marked, undamaged, and placed where its noise and size will not cause you to turn it off.
You need a bedroom unit that can run quietly
Compare commercial models by smoke CADR at their quieter settings and choose a CARB-certified mechanical design when available. If you use a DIY fan, test it before smoke season and consider placing it farther from the bed while keeping the door closed.
Commercial purifiers are unavailable
A box fan with one 1-inch MERV 13 filter is still useful. Add a shroud for a measured improvement, and move to a thicker or multi-filter configuration if you need more CADR and have the space.
You have only one cleaner for the house
Designate a room with a closable door as the clean-air room, place the cleaner there, and keep the room closed as much as practical. EPA says one cleaner may suffice for a designated room; smoky or poorly sealed homes may benefit from more than one unit.
Your smoke levels remain high after setup
- Confirm that the fan or purifier is actually running at the intended speed.
- Look for gaps around a DIY filter or a blocked commercial intake.
- Check whether the CADR meets the room-size target; move the unit to a smaller room or add another cleaner if it does not.
- Close windows and doors when safe and reduce avoidable leakage.
- Inspect the filter for dark loading or smoke odor and replace it if needed.
- Allow time for continuous operation; opening the door repeatedly or introducing outdoor smoke will slow improvement.
The cleaner is too loud
Try a lower setting only if the resulting CADR remains adequate, move the unit onto a stable surface away from vibrating furniture, or use an additional cleaner at lower speeds. If noise still prevents continuous use, a quieter commercial model may provide better real-world protection.
