AI watermarking is not one universal technology. Text systems alter token-selection probabilities so a detector can search for a statistical pattern. Image, audio and video systems can embed an imperceptible signal in the media itself. C2PA Content Credentials use a different approach: signed provenance records that can describe who created or edited an asset.

Removal is possible in a qualified sense. Metadata can be stripped, files can be re-encoded or cropped, and strong edits can weaken embedded signals. Text watermarks may become less detectable after thorough rewriting, translation or regeneration. A negative detector result means only that the tested, supported signal was not found; it does not prove human authorship.

AI watermarking is a family of techniques, not a single switch

The word “watermark” covers several mechanisms with different goals and failure modes. A visible logo is easy to recognise but easy to crop. A pixel-level image signal is hidden and designed to survive normal processing. A text watermark is a statistical bias in word selection rather than extra characters. C2PA Content Credentials are signed provenance metadata, not an invisible mark in every pixel.

Those distinctions determine what a detector can establish and what an attacker can remove. The table below separates the main approaches.

Approach Where the signal lives What verification looks for Typical way it can be lost
Visible mark Displayed logo, label or overlay Visual inspection or image matching Cropping, covering, retouching or recomposition
Statistical text watermark Token-selection probabilities during generation A provider-specific statistical score over enough text Extensive rewriting, translation, paraphrasing or regeneration
Embedded media signal Imperceptible changes in image, audio or video data A detector tuned to the generating system’s signal Severe manipulation, some crops or format transformations
C2PA Content Credentials Cryptographically signed provenance manifest, sometimes with a soft binding Signature validity and a link between the manifest and the current asset Metadata stripping, unsupported export or a broken content binding

A single file can contain more than one layer. For example, a generated image may retain C2PA credentials while also carrying a SynthID-style signal. Losing one layer does not automatically remove the others.

How text watermarking works

Token probabilities are adjusted during generation

Language models normally assign probabilities to possible next tokens. A watermarking system changes those probabilities according to a secret or configured scoring process. It may give a slight preference to one changing subset of candidate tokens and less preference to another. Across a sufficiently long response, that preference can create a statistical signature that a detector tests for later.

Google’s SynthID-Text research describes two operating modes. Non-distortionary watermarking prioritises text quality, keeping the probability changes small enough that ordinary readers should not notice a systematic style shift. Distortionary watermarking increases the strength of the signal to improve detectability, accepting a quality cost. The choice is therefore a trade-off rather than a guarantee: a stronger signal can be easier to detect but more likely to affect wording or reduce flexibility.

Detection is probabilistic, not authorship proof

A detector calculates how unusual the observed token sequence would be without the watermark. Longer, varied responses provide more evidence because they contain more token decisions. Very short answers, repetitive wording, code, quotations and text that has already been heavily edited provide less useful evidence. Google describes SynthID-Text detection as stronger for longer, varied responses and weaker after extensive rewriting or translation.

The result should be read as evidence about a particular supported watermark, not as a universal AI-or-human verdict. A detector can miss a watermark because there is too little text, because the provider’s detector is unavailable, or because transformations changed the statistical pattern. Conversely, a statistical signal does not by itself identify the human or system that supplied the prompt, edited the result or published it.

Why rewriting and translation can defeat text signals

Rewriting changes the token sequence that carried the original bias. Translation first maps the text into a different language’s tokenisation and then generates a new sequence, so much of the original pattern may disappear. Regenerating an answer from the same subject is also a new sampling event; it does not preserve the old token decisions. Academic work has explicitly studied “smoothing” attacks against language-model watermarks, illustrating why a detector’s confidence can fall when wording is deliberately altered.

How watermarking works in images, audio and video

Imperceptible signals are embedded in media data

Systems such as Google’s SynthID embed a signal that is intended to be imperceptible while remaining measurable by a detector that knows the signal’s design. The detector does not merely inspect whether a file has a familiar metadata field; it analyses the media content for the expected pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says the signal is designed to survive ordinary changes such as compression, filters and colour or brightness adjustments. That makes routine publishing workflows less likely to destroy it. Resilience is not permanence, however. The company also states: “SynthID isn’t foolproof against extreme image manipulations, but it does provide a promising technical approach for empowering people and organisations to work with AI-generated content responsibly.”

Media signals and metadata are independent layers

Editing software or a social platform can remove ordinary metadata while leaving enough pixel information for an embedded detector to find a signal. The reverse can also happen: a file may retain a provenance record while an aggressive transformation damages the pixel-level signal. Checking only an EXIF or other metadata panel therefore cannot answer whether an invisible watermark is present.

What C2PA Content Credentials do differently

Signed provenance, not a pixel watermark

C2PA defines a standard for signed manifests. A manifest can record a creator, generating tool, edits, redactions and other assertions, with cryptographic signatures intended to show whether the record was altered after signing. It answers a provenance question—what claims accompany this asset and who signed them—rather than hiding a signal in every pixel or token.

Soft bindings help reconnect changed files

The C2PA specification describes “soft bindings”, including perceptual hashes and watermarks, that can help a verifier reconnect a manifest to content after transformations. They are a way to associate a record with a derivative; they do not make the record indestructible. If a platform or export tool strips the manifest, fails to preserve it, or changes the content beyond the binding’s tolerance, that provenance layer may no longer be available.

Consequently, “C2PA removed” usually means the signed record or its association with the file was lost. It does not necessarily mean that every embedded media signal has been erased.

Can an AI watermark be removed?

There is no single removal method because there is no single watermark mechanism. A determined actor can often remove or weaken a signal, but the effort and visible damage depend on the media type, the implementation, the transformation and whether the verifier has the correct provider-specific detector. The practical possibilities fall into three layers.

1. Remove metadata and provenance records

Exporting without metadata, taking a screenshot, uploading through a service that re-encodes files, or using an editor that does not preserve manifests can discard C2PA credentials and ordinary file metadata. This is often the easiest layer to remove because it is a separate data structure rather than part of the visible content.

Metadata removal does not prove that an embedded SynthID-style signal is gone. It also does not prove that a file was made by a person; it only means the available provenance record is absent from that copy.

2. Degrade an embedded signal

Cropping, heavy filtering, resizing, format conversion, repeated compression, colour changes, frame changes in video, or aggressive audio processing can reduce detector confidence. Ofcom’s attribution-toolkit experiments conducted in 2025 found that some tested edits, including cropping, removed watermarks. That finding applies to the tested systems and edits; it is not a universal crop percentage for every vendor.

Ordinary compression or a modest brightness adjustment may leave a robust signal detectable, while a transformation that changes a large portion of the content may destroy it. A screenshot can replace the original file and its metadata, but its success against a content-embedded signal depends on the screenshot pipeline, resolution, display capture and the detector’s tolerance.

3. Rewrite, translate or regenerate text

For statistical text watermarks, changing the wording changes the evidence. Thorough paraphrasing, translation, sentence restructuring and regeneration can lower the score or produce text with no detectable trace of the original sequence. This may also change meaning, style or factual accuracy, so “removed” can come at a content cost.

Regeneration is especially different from editing the original file: it creates a new output whose watermark status depends on the new generator and its settings. It is not a way to recover the original provenance history.

What common actions do—and do not—prove

Action Likely effect What it cannot establish
Delete EXIF or other metadata Removes ordinary metadata and may remove a C2PA manifest That an embedded signal is absent or that a human made the asset
Take a screenshot or screen recording Creates a new file and often drops the original metadata That a pixel-level or audio signal survived the capture
Crop or strongly edit an image May lower confidence or destroy a tested watermark; Ofcom reported some cropping removals in 2025 experiments That every watermark system fails under the same edit
Translate or heavily rewrite text Can break the original token pattern That the resulting text is human-written or free of a different watermark
Run a detector and get “none found” Shows no supported signal was detected in that sample Human authorship, original provenance or absence of an unsupported watermark

How to interpret a detector result responsibly

Confirm what the detector supports

Use the detector associated with the suspected provider and media type where possible. A text detector cannot verify a pixel watermark, and a C2PA viewer cannot infer a missing manifest from image content. A generic “AI detector” may simply lack the model, signal key or file support required for a meaningful test.

Check the sample and its history

  • Keep the original file, not only a downloaded social-media copy.
  • Record whether it was cropped, resized, recompressed, translated, rewritten or exported by another application.
  • For text, provide enough varied material for a statistical test; a short quotation is weak evidence.
  • For media, test the highest-quality available copy before making additional edits.
  • Inspect provenance records separately from content-based watermark results.

Read abstentions and negative results literally

A sound system should distinguish “watermark detected,” “watermark not detected” and “unable to determine.” “No supported signal detected” is the narrow, accurate interpretation of a negative result. It does not establish that the content is human-made, that no other vendor’s signal exists, or that the original file had no provenance before this copy was edited.

How to compare watermarking systems

For an organisation choosing a generator or verification service, durability under routine edits is only one criterion. Compare the following properties rather than relying on a single removal demonstration or a claimed success rate.

  • Ordinary-edit durability: performance after compression, resizing, filters, colour changes, platform upload and common export paths.
  • Deliberate-attack resistance: behaviour under cropping, heavy manipulation, rewriting, translation and regeneration.
  • Precision and abstention: false-positive controls, confidence reporting and an explicit indeterminate state.
  • Coverage: supported text languages, image formats, audio and video workflows, and the exact generator versions.
  • Interoperability: whether embedded signals can coexist with C2PA manifests and whether downstream tools preserve those manifests.
  • Privacy: what files are uploaded, how long they are retained, whether content is used for service improvement and whether enterprise deletion controls exist.
  • Auditability: access to signed provenance history, detector versioning and records of transformations.

No official source establishes one removal-success percentage that represents all AI-watermarking systems. The Nature paper is a peer-reviewed 2024 study of SynthID-Text, while Ofcom’s cited attribution-toolkit experiments were conducted in 2025. Results from either should be kept within the system, media type and test conditions they actually examined.

A practical verification workflow

  1. Preserve the original: save the first received file or text and its creation or download context.
  2. Check signed provenance: inspect C2PA credentials, signature status and the listed creation and edit history separately from any watermark detector.
  3. Use the matching detector: select the provider-specific tool for the relevant generator and media type.
  4. Test before editing: run the original at the highest available quality, then record any result and confidence or abstention.
  5. Document transformations: note screenshots, crops, exports, translations, rewrites and platform re-encoding before interpreting a changed result.
  6. Report the narrow conclusion: state which signal was tested, on which copy, with which tool and date. Do not convert a missing signal into a claim of human authorship.

The bottom line on removal

AI watermark removal is often feasible for a determined actor, but “removed” is not a universal technical state. Metadata and C2PA records can disappear through ordinary export. Embedded signals may survive routine processing yet fail after severe edits; Ofcom’s 2025 experiments show that some tested crops removed watermarks. Statistical text marks can weaken after rewriting or translation. Verification therefore works best as layered evidence—signed provenance, provider-specific watermark detection and the documented history of transformations—rather than as a single yes-or-no test.
