AI can make a translation draft inexpensive and fast, but fluent wording or a high automatic score does not prove that the meaning is preserved. Match the review to the consequences of an error: use automated checks for triage, context-aware bilingual evaluation for ordinary work, and qualified language-and-domain experts for medical, legal, financial, safety or other consequential content.
What cheaper AI translation changes—and what it does not
Neural translation systems can produce a usable first draft in seconds, reducing the cost of getting text into another language. The saving is in drafting, not in removing responsibility for the final wording. A sentence may sound natural while changing a dosage, negating a requirement, softening a warning, or using a term that is wrong for the document’s field.
There is no established, general current percentage for how often AI translations are wrong across all languages, domains and uses. Error rates vary with language pair, subject matter, source quality, document length and the intended audience. Treat every score or confidence signal as evidence about a test setup, not as a deployment guarantee.

Separate fluency, meaning and fitness for use
Reviewers need to ask three different questions:
- Accuracy: Does the target text convey the source meaning, including numbers, names, negation, modality and terminology?
- Linguistic conventions: Is the grammar, spelling, punctuation and usage natural for the target variety?
- Style and purpose: Does it meet the required tone, reading level, formatting and audience expectations?
A sentence can pass the second test and fail the first. A polished legal clause that changes who must act is still wrong, and a medically understandable sentence that changes a unit is unsafe.

What automatic metrics can—and cannot—tell you
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cautions that “Automatic metrics have not yet been proved able to predict the usefulness and reliability of MT technologies with respect to real applications with confidence.” Metrics compare system output with one or more references or estimate quality from the text; they do not establish that a particular document is safe to publish. NIST also notes that such metrics have not demonstrated meaning across target languages other than English with the confidence needed for that claim. See the NIST metrics overview.
NIST’s MetricsMaTr page reports correlations between selected metrics and human adequacy assessments for specified English-target evaluation data. In the MetricsMaTr10 cycle, the highest listed correlations were:
| Evaluation level | One reference | Four references |
|---|---|---|
| Segment | 0.69 | 0.74 |
| Document | 0.84 | 0.85 |
| System | 0.92 | 0.93 |
These are Spearman correlation coefficients for the named NIST evaluation cycle and data, not accuracy percentages, probabilities that a sentence is correct, or estimates of real-world failure rates. The page was updated April 3, 2024, and its most recent challenge is MetricsMaTr10; it is not a fresh benchmark of every current commercial model.
Who checks AI translations?
Responsibility should be assigned before translation starts. The person who can read both languages may not know the subject, and the subject expert may not be able to detect subtle target-language errors. For consequential material, require both relevant language competence and domain competence, with a clear owner for accepting or rejecting the text.

Review options and the problems they address
| Method | Useful contribution | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic quality estimation or scoring | Ranks segments for attention and can flag unusual output quickly. | It is a signal, not proof that meaning and safety are preserved in the intended application. |
| Back-translation | Translates the target back into the source language, exposing some meaning shifts that are hard to notice in the target alone. | It can miss errors and should not be treated as a complete safety check. |
| Bilingual language reviewer | Checks meaning, grammar, terminology and style with the source available. | Without subject knowledge, the reviewer may miss a technically dangerous interpretation. |
| Domain-qualified professional translator or editor | Combines language judgment with field terminology and document conventions. | Human review takes time, costs money and can be difficult to standardize. |
Compare approaches on meaning and accuracy, language conventions, style, access to the complete source document, evaluator competence, severity of a possible error, consistency and explainability, time and cost. These dimensions are discussed in ISO 5060:2024 and in a 2025 World Machine Translation proceedings paper that evaluates accuracy, linguistic conventions and style.
What does ISO 5060:2024 require you to define?
ISO 5060:2024, Translation services — Evaluation of translation output — General guidance, Edition 1, was published in February 2024. Its guidance covers human translation, post-edited machine translation and unedited machine translation. It describes an analytic method in which reviewers classify error types, assign penalty points, calculate an error score and derive a quality rating. It also addresses evaluator qualifications and sampling, so an organization can explain why particular text was reviewed and how the result was judged.
The standard is an evaluation framework, not a promise that a translation is safe. Its published scope does not cover the separate processes of assuring translation-output quality or taking corrective actions, and it does not apply to interpreting. The ISO page lists paper and digital editions; formats and price can change.
How to build a risk-based review workflow
1. Define the use and the cost of being wrong
Write down who will read the translation, what decision they may make and what an error could cause. A private draft for comprehension can tolerate more uncertainty than instructions that determine treatment, contractual duties, payment, eligibility or emergency action. Set an approval threshold before anyone sees the score.

2. Preserve the context a reviewer needs
Give reviewers the complete source document, not isolated sentences copied into a spreadsheet. Include headings, tables, footnotes, variables, screenshots and terminology instructions. Context reveals whether a pronoun refers to a product, a person or a legal entity and whether a short phrase is a warning, a condition or an exception.
3. Use automation to prioritize, not to certify
Run quality-estimation or consistency checks to find segments with unusual terminology, omissions, number changes or low predicted quality. Send those segments to the front of the queue, but keep a representative sample of apparently high-quality segments. A system that only reviews low-scoring text can miss systematic errors that the estimator does not recognize.
4. Apply an explicit error taxonomy
Record the source span, the translated span, the error type, its severity, the proposed correction and the reviewer’s rationale. At minimum, classify accuracy, linguistic conventions and style. Add categories relevant to the material, such as numbers and units, names, terminology, instructions, formatting and omissions. An explicit model makes disagreements visible instead of hiding them in a single overall score.
5. Escalate consequential errors
Any error that could change a clinical action, legal obligation, financial amount, safety instruction or eligibility decision should go to a reviewer with the appropriate domain knowledge. Do not publish while a critical disagreement remains unresolved. Keep the approved source and target versions together so later edits can be audited.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Sample and monitor after release
Human review of every word may be impractical, so document the sampling rule: which languages, document types, authors, models and risk levels receive full review, and which receive a sample. Reassess the sample when the model, terminology, source template or audience changes. ISO 5060’s discussion of sampling supports making this choice explicit rather than assuming that a small, convenient sample represents all output.
What did research find about expert and crowd evaluation?
A 2021 study by Markus Freitag, George Foster, David Grangier, Viresh Ratnakar, Qijun Tan and Wolfgang Macherey examined top systems from the WMT 2020 English-to-German and Chinese-to-English tasks. Professional translators made MQM-based judgments with full document context, and their system ranking differed substantially from rankings produced by WMT crowd workers. In that experiment, metrics based on pretrained embeddings could outperform crowd workers; that result does not make automatic metrics universally better than experts. It shows why evaluator experience, context and the error model can change the conclusion. The study is available at arXiv:2104.14478.
A separate 2025 WMT proceedings paper evaluated Japanese-to-English integrated-report translation with professional bilingual evaluators across accuracy, linguistic conventions and style. Only two of 24 recruited participants completed the error-annotation task. That finding illustrates how demanding detailed annotation can be; it is not a general statistic about reviewer performance or a universal ranking of translation systems. Read the WMT 2025 paper for the study’s narrow context.
Is back-translation enough to check a translation?
No. Back-translation can be a useful second view, especially when a reviewer needs a quick signal that the target may have changed the source. It is not an independent guarantee: the second translation can reproduce the same misunderstanding or smooth over an error.

Evidence from a specific medical scenario shows why checks complement one another. In a 2023 preprint, Nikita Mehandru and coauthors simulated physicians deciding whether to show machine-translated emergency-department discharge instructions to patients. Quality-estimation feedback improved physicians’ appropriate reliance decisions, while back-translation helped them detect more clinically harmful errors that quality estimation alone often missed. The result applies to that simulated setting; it is not a universal clinical safety protocol. See the study.
Can you trust AI translation for medical, legal or safety information?
Use AI output as a draft unless a qualified reviewer has approved it for the exact purpose. Medical instructions require reviewers who understand both the target language and clinical terminology. Legal and regulatory text requires people who can interpret the relevant legal concepts and jurisdiction-specific conventions. Safety notices need reviewers who understand the hazard and the action the reader must take.
For lower-stakes internal comprehension, a bilingual check of a sample may be proportionate. For text shown directly to patients, customers, employees or regulators, set a documented human-approval gate. Keep the source, target, reviewer identity, error log, corrections and approval date so a later incident can be traced to a decision rather than to an unexplained model score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow much human review is enough?
There is no universal percentage. NIST identifies the cost and difficulty of standardizing human assessment as constraints, so plan evaluator time instead of assuming that reviewing everything is effortless. A practical allocation is:
| Use case | Starting review pattern | Escalation trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Private, low-risk draft | Automated triage plus a bilingual sample focused on names, numbers and omissions. | Any segment intended for external publication or instructions. |
| Public informational content | Full review of headings, calls to action, terminology and a representative sample of body text. | Unresolved meaning error, inconsistent terminology or audience-sensitive phrasing. |
| Medical, legal, financial or safety content | Full context-aware review by language and domain-qualified people, with a recorded error log. | Any critical disagreement or change to a dose, obligation, amount, warning or eligibility rule. |
Adjust the pattern for language pair, document complexity, model changes and the consequences of an error. The table is a planning framework, not a claim that one sampling rate works everywhere.
What a defensible translation decision looks like
- The intended audience and consequences of an error are written down.
- The reviewer saw the full source context and relevant terminology instructions.
- Automated scores were used to prioritize attention, never as the sole approval.
- Errors were recorded by type and severity, with corrections and reasons.
- Reviewers had the language and domain competence required by the content.
- Critical disagreements were escalated before publication.
- The sample, approval decision and date are retained for audit.
Cheap generation changes the economics of the first draft. It does not change who is accountable for the meaning that readers receive. A score can help decide where to look; only a review designed for the document’s risk can decide whether the result is fit to use.
