AI threat detection tools watch more than model output. They can record prompts, retrieved data, model versions, guardrail decisions, tool calls, identities, host activity, cloud events and downstream actions. The right category depends on what you operate: an AI application or agent, employee use of generative AI, endpoints, cloud workloads, or a security operations center (SOC) that must investigate all of them together.
What AI threat detection actually covers
“AI threat detection” is an umbrella term rather than one product category. In practice, it describes security monitoring that adds AI-specific signals to the telemetry already collected from endpoints, identities, networks and cloud services. A useful system connects an event in an AI application with the user or service identity that caused it, the model and version involved, the context retrieved for the request, the tools called by the model, the policy decision and the resulting action.
That broader view matters because an unsafe outcome may not look like a malicious model response. A prompt could contain sensitive company data, a retrieval step could return an over-permissive document, an agent could invoke a production API with excessive privileges, or a compromised account could use an otherwise legitimate chatbot. Monitoring only the final response misses the evidence needed to determine what happened and how far the activity reached.

- Retrieved context: documents, records or other data supplied to the model through retrieval-augmented generation.
- Model lineage: the model name, version, deployment and application that handled the request.
- Guardrail and policy decisions: whether content, data-loss, access or safety controls allowed, blocked or modified an action.
- Tool calls and downstream actions: APIs, plugins, databases, files or business systems contacted by an agent, including the result where it can be logged safely.
- Identity and application context: the human user, service account, tenant, application and session associated with the event.
- Resource, network and cloud signals: token or compute use, network connections, workload activity and related cloud events.
- Traces and lineage: the sequence linking an input to retrieval, model execution, policy evaluation, tool use and output.
Centralized logs, metrics and traces let analysts search these signals together. Privacy, access control and retention settings are part of the design: prompts and retrieved records may contain personal, regulated or confidential information, so storing everything indefinitely is not a safe default.
AI runtime security, endpoint detection, cloud detection and XDR compared
The following comparison separates the main monitoring layers. They complement one another rather than represent interchangeable products.
| Category | Primary visibility | Typical detection approach | Response and investigation | Best scope fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI runtime security | Prompts, retrieved context, model and version, guardrails, tool calls, outputs, identity and downstream actions | Policy evaluation, behavioral analysis and correlation of an AI transaction from input to action | Block or allow requests, enforce policies, alert analysts and trace an agent’s actions | Production AI applications, autonomous agents and customer-facing chatbots |
| Endpoint detection and response (EDR) | Processes, network activity, kernel and memory-manager events, logins, registry and file-system changes | Indicators, signatures and behavioral detections on hosts | Alerts and incidents for investigation, with device containment capabilities in an EDR workflow | Employee computers, servers and other managed hosts |
| Cloud detection and response (CDR) | Cloud control-plane, workload, identity and service telemetry | Correlation of provider and workload events across cloud services | Investigate cloud incidents and contain affected identities, workloads or services through existing controls | Cloud accounts, containers, Kubernetes and distributed workloads |
| SIEM | Centralized events from applications, identities, endpoints, networks and cloud systems | Rules, correlation, threat intelligence and analyst queries | Case management, investigation, alert routing and response orchestration | SOCs that need one investigative record across many sources |
| XDR | Correlated endpoint, identity, email, network, cloud and application signals | Cross-domain behavioral correlation and incident grouping | Prioritized incidents and coordinated containment across security controls | Organizations seeking broader detection without building every correlation rule themselves |
AI runtime security: the layer around a model and its agents
Runtime monitoring follows an AI request while it is executing. It records the prompt, the data retrieved for that prompt, the model and version, guardrail decisions, tool calls and the final output. For an autonomous agent, the important object is the chain of actions rather than a single message: which identity started the run, which tools were invoked, what data came back and whether the agent changed a ticket, file, account or transaction.

Employee use of AI services
In a managed enterprise, AI-aware monitoring can identify which employees use approved or unapproved AI tools, what applications are involved and whether activity correlates with endpoint, network or identity events. This is useful for investigating possible data exposure, unusual access or a compromised account. Monitoring should be paired with a clear acceptable-use policy and data-minimization rules; collecting prompts without a defined purpose can create a new privacy and compliance problem.

Internally developed applications and agents
Development teams need lineage that production application logs often omit. Capture the model deployment, prompt template or orchestration step, retrieval source, policy result and tool invocation ID so an engineer can reproduce an event and determine whether a bad result came from data, instructions, permissions or the model itself. Restrict high-impact tools with explicit policies and require human approval where an automated action could create material harm.
Customer-facing chatbots
Public interfaces need monitoring for abuse, prompt manipulation, unexpected tool use and account takeover. Link each event to the customer session and backend identity, but redact or tokenize personal data before it enters a long-term analytics store. A runtime layer can block a request immediately; a SIEM or XDR platform can then correlate it with authentication, API and infrastructure activity.
What endpoint detection sees—and what it does not
Endpoint detection is focused on host behavior. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint documentation lists process information, network activities, kernel and memory-manager telemetry, user logins, registry changes and file-system changes. Detections generate alerts that analysts investigate, and related alerts can be grouped into an incident.
EDR can show that a browser spawned a suspicious process, a script accessed credential stores or a workstation connected to an unusual address. It generally cannot explain which retrieved document influenced an AI response or why an agent selected a particular business API unless those details are separately logged by the application. EDR remains essential when an AI tool is being abused through a compromised host, but it is not a substitute for application-level AI telemetry.

Cloud detection and response for AI workloads
Cloud detection and response uses provider and workload logs to reveal activity that endpoint or network tools may miss. Microsoft identifies AWS CloudTrail, Azure Monitor, Google Cloud Logging and Kubernetes audit logs as common sources. CDR correlates events across workloads, identities and cloud services, such as a service account creating a new deployment, changing a storage policy and accessing a model endpoint.
For an AI platform, collect control-plane events, container and Kubernetes audit records, identity activity, API gateway logs, model-endpoint calls and storage access. The value comes from correlation: a suspicious prompt is more serious when it coincides with a new role assignment, an unusual region, a changed network rule or bulk access to training data. Cloud logs can be voluminous and costly, so define retention tiers and retain high-value investigation fields longer than raw debug traces.
Where SIEM and XDR fit
A SIEM is the investigation and correlation hub. Send normalized AI events to it alongside endpoint, identity, network and cloud records, then use searches, rules and case workflows to connect them. This is especially important when an AI event alone is ambiguous: an unusual tool call may be legitimate for one service account but suspicious when paired with a new login from an unfamiliar location.
XDR provides a more pre-correlated experience across security domains. It can group related alerts into an incident and prioritize a sequence that spans an endpoint, an identity and a cloud workload. XDR does not remove the need for AI application logs; it makes those logs more useful when they are mapped to common identities, timestamps, assets and incident identifiers.

Questions to ask about integration
- Can the tool export prompts, tool calls, policy decisions and model lineage in a structured format?
- Does it preserve a common user, service-account, application and session identifier?
- Can analysts pivot from an AI event to endpoint, identity, network and cloud records?
- Are alert, case and containment actions available through the existing SOC workflow?
- Can retention, redaction and access controls be applied differently to sensitive prompt content and operational metadata?
Who needs AI threat detection tools?
Organizations running production AI applications or agents
Monitoring is justified when a model can access confidential data, call business systems, make decisions or trigger actions without a person reviewing every step. The more autonomous the workflow, the more important action-level lineage and permission-aware policies become.
Businesses exposing models to customers
Customer-facing AI creates an externally reachable attack surface. Runtime records help distinguish ordinary use from abuse, connect a suspicious session to backend actions and support rapid blocking without shutting down unrelated services.
Companies allowing employee use of generative AI with sensitive data
If staff can paste source code, customer records, financial information or regulated data into AI services, security teams need visibility into the service, user, device and data-handling decision. Monitoring should support policy enforcement rather than become indiscriminate surveillance.
Cloud-first organizations operating at scale
Distributed model endpoints, containers, storage services and identities create relationships that a single host sensor cannot see. CDR becomes more valuable as workloads and accounts multiply across providers or regions.

SOCs that investigate across domains
Organizations already correlating endpoint, identity, network and cloud alerts should add AI events to the same workflow. Without central correlation, analysts may have to reconstruct an incident manually from separate application and infrastructure logs.
Smaller organizations without a 24-hour security team
The documented workflows assume someone can triage alerts, investigate evidence, tune detections and own response. A small company may therefore need a managed detection service or an internal owner with clearly assigned escalation duties. Buying a sensor without staffing the investigation process does not create meaningful protection.
How to choose the right coverage
- Map the exposure. List employee AI use, public applications, internal agents, model endpoints, training data, cloud accounts, managed endpoints and privileged identities.
- Identify consequential actions. Mark tools that can send messages, change records, deploy code, move money, alter access or retrieve regulated data.
- Choose the minimum telemetry. For AI, start with prompt and response metadata, model lineage, retrieval, policy decisions, tool calls, identity and outcomes. Add full content only where the privacy and investigation case supports it.
- Connect existing controls. Map AI events to your SIEM or XDR, identity provider, API gateway, cloud logs and endpoint incidents.
- Define response paths. Decide who can block a request, disable a tool, isolate a device, revoke a token, contain a workload or notify a customer.
- Test representative incidents. Exercise a leaked secret in a prompt, an abused service account, a malicious tool call and a compromised endpoint. Confirm that analysts can trace cause, scope and remediation.
- Review privacy and cost. Set redaction, role-based access and retention rules, and estimate the volume and ingestion cost of prompts, traces and cloud events before enabling maximum verbosity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Monitoring only model output: add retrieval, identity, policy and tool-call records so investigators can reconstruct the decision path.
- Assuming EDR covers an AI application: keep endpoint sensors, but instrument the application and agent runtime as well.
- Collecting logs without correlation keys: standardize timestamps, user and service identities, application names, session IDs and asset IDs.
- Keeping every prompt forever: separate sensitive content from metadata, apply retention tiers and restrict access to the smallest necessary group.
- Automating containment too early: begin with alerts and analyst approval for high-impact actions, then automate only after false positives and rollback procedures are understood.
- Buying for the label “AI”: select coverage based on exposure, required response and the team’s ability to operate it.
How to judge effectiveness
Official capability descriptions explain what these tools can collect and correlate, but they do not provide a directly comparable independent percentage or benchmark for detection effectiveness. Evaluate a deployment using your own scenarios: time to detect, time to investigate, time to contain, completeness of the action trail, analyst effort, false-positive rate and the percentage of high-risk AI actions covered by enforceable policy. Record the conditions for each measurement so results remain comparable as models, workloads and policies change.
The practical decision
Use AI runtime monitoring when the risk is in prompts, retrieved data, model behavior or agent actions. Use EDR when the risk is host compromise or suspicious activity on a device or server. Use CDR when cloud identities, workloads and control-plane changes are central to the threat. Feed all three into a SIEM or XDR when analysts must investigate a single incident across domains. The right investment is determined by what can be exposed and what your team can investigate and contain—not by whether a product uses the word “AI.”
