Use regular Google Search when you need a specific page, direct links, or control over comparing sources. Use an AI Overview for a quick orientation when one appears, and AI Mode when a question benefits from a deeper conversation and follow-up. For medical, legal, financial, or safety decisions, go to authoritative sources directly and verify any generated summary.
Choose by what you need to do
| Your task | Good starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Find a particular site, document, or exact page | Conventional Google results; use the Web filter when available | Try another phrasing if the page does not appear. The Web filter shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews, according to Google Search Help. |
| Get oriented on a broad question | An AI Overview, if Google shows one | Open its supporting links and compare claims with other results. Google says Overviews can make mistakes. |
| Explore a complicated question with follow-ups | AI Mode | Check that it is available to you and inspect the linked sources. Eligibility and capabilities vary. |
| Compare local options or find a direct local fact | Regular Google Search | Confirm time-sensitive details with the business or another official source. Google describes Search as surfacing local information such as menus, distance, current busyness, and delivery, as well as local weather. |
| Make a consequential medical, legal, financial, or safety decision | Authoritative sources directly | Treat generated summaries as a starting point, not a substitute for qualified or official guidance. |
These are practical starting points, not measured claims that one interface is always faster or more accurate. Results can differ with the query, location, device, account state, and feature access; the available evidence does not establish a universal winner across all tasks and competing products.
What “AI search” means in Google
AI Overviews: a summary within Search
AI Overviews are summaries integrated into Google Search, not a separate search engine. Google says they may appear when its systems judge generative AI useful—for example, when a question calls for understanding information from several sources—and can include links for further reading. If you prefer a conventional list, Google’s Web filter shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. Google Search Help warns: “AI responses may include mistakes.” See Google’s explanation of AI Overviews and the Web filter.
AI Mode: a conversational search experience
AI Mode is designed for deeper exploration through follow-up questions and provides links to sources. Google documents advanced reasoning and interactive visual features, but access is not identical for every user: some capabilities depend on language, age, account conditions, region, or subscription plan, and usage limits can change. Check Google’s current AI Mode help page for eligibility rather than assuming your interface will match someone else’s.

How the results differ—and why verification matters
Conventional results primarily present ranked links for you to open and compare. An AI search feature presents generated synthesis, often alongside links. Synthesis can save effort when a question has several parts, but it can also hide disagreements or make an error sound settled. Links make checking possible; they do not by themselves prove that the summary accurately represents those sources.
A study by Aggarwal and coauthors, published for SIGIR 2026, compared conventional Google Search, AI Overviews, and Gemini using 14,212 queries, including 11,500 time-invariant benchmark queries. The authors report substantial differences in the sources surfaced by the compared products, and lower stability for generative search across repeated runs than for conventional results. They also report an average Jaccard similarity below 0.2 between retrieved source sets across the compared search surfaces—a measure of source overlap, not a score for answer quality. The study’s abstract says 51.5% of representative real-user queries in its sample received AI Overviews above organic results; that is a finding from the study’s sample and method, not a universal current rate. Read the SIGIR 2026 study for its methods and limits.
These results describe a bounded comparison of Google products at a particular point in time. They do not prove that every AI search service behaves alike or that every generated answer is unreliable. Google CEO Sundar Pichai made a related but historical point in a 2024 TIME interview: “Generative AI still has its flaws. There’s the hallucination problem, which is getting better, but is by no means solved.” That is a 2024 interview statement, not a current product update.
A quick way to check an AI search answer
- Open the linked sources. Check whether they support the specific claim, rather than merely discussing the same topic.
- Compare independent results. Use the Web filter or search with a different phrasing to see what direct pages say.
- Check dates and authority. For changing details, prefer current primary or official sources; for consequential decisions, consult the relevant qualified source.
- Follow up when something is unclear. AI Mode can support a longer exchange, but a confident response or another follow-up is not verification on its own.
Is AI search better than Google Search?
It depends on the task. For locating a specific page and inspecting sources yourself, start with conventional Google results. For a quick synthesis, an AI Overview can be convenient; for a question that needs iterative follow-up, AI Mode is built for that style of exploration. The available sources do not establish a systematic winner across all AI search providers, tasks, locations, and users, so treat these as task-based choices rather than a universal ranking.
