Fix AI-generated Unreal Engine code by identifying which stage fails before changing anything: UnrealHeaderTool (UHT), UnrealBuildTool (UBT), C++ compilation or linking, target selection, or runtime behavior. Capture the first meaningful diagnostic and the build context, then make the smallest change that addresses the cause. A successful compile is only one checkpoint; you still need to retest the original gameplay scenario.
Why does AI-generated Unreal C++ fail?
AI-generated Unreal code is a draft, not a guarantee that a declaration matches Unreal’s reflection rules, that a module is available to the selected target, or that an API exists in your installed engine version. It can also compile and still fail when gameplay runs because an object is invalid, initialization happens later than expected, an asset is unavailable, or the code executes in a different context than intended.
The useful first question is not “What is wrong with all this code?” but “Which stage reported the first failure?” Unreal’s build process may invoke UHT before the ordinary C++ compiler. UBT then coordinates targets and modules; the compiler and linker handle C++ declarations, definitions, and symbols. Runtime debugging is a separate task: it requires reproducing behavior and inspecting state.

What evidence should I capture before changing code?
Record the first useful error and enough context to reproduce it. A long error list often includes follow-on messages caused by one earlier problem, so begin with the earliest specific diagnostic rather than treating every line as an independent defect.
- The first meaningful diagnostic: copy its wording, file path, and line number. Keep nearby output if it explains the failure, but do not begin by sending an entire log without identifying the first causal message.
- When it fails: note whether the failure occurs during project-file generation, UHT, compilation, linking, editor startup, Play in Editor (PIE), or a packaged build.
- The build context: record the engine version, target, and configuration. Epic documents separate Editor, Game, Client, and Server targets, and configurations including Debug, DebugGame, Development, Shipping, and Test.
- The reproduction: for a runtime problem, record the action that triggers it and what the game does instead. Include relevant inputs, object or asset names, and the state immediately before the failure where possible.
- The recent change: identify which generated class or function changed. If unrelated edits arrived in the same batch, separate them before debugging.
This evidence helps distinguish an unsupported engine API from a missing module, a reflected declaration problem, or a runtime lifecycle defect. It also lets you ask for a precise, limited repair instead of inviting another broad rewrite.
How do I tell whether the failure is UHT, UBT, C++, or runtime?
Use the failing stage to choose the next check. UHT errors point first to reflection metadata; UBT errors point first to project, target, or module setup; compiler and linker errors point to C++ declarations, definitions, symbols, or libraries; runtime failures require a reproducible scenario and state inspection.

| C++ compilation or linking | Includes, names and namespaces, declaration-definition agreement, pointer or reference types, API signatures, symbols, and libraries. | The earliest compiler or linker diagnostic and the code around the reported location. |
| Runtime | Object validity, ownership and lifetime assumptions, initialization order, assets, world and execution context, and the state that leads to the symptom. | A repeatable trigger, focused logs, call path, and whether the issue occurs in Editor, PIE, Game, Client, or Server. |
These categories can overlap in a single build. For example, a wrong reflected declaration may stop UHT before C++ compilation begins, while a module dependency can prevent otherwise valid code from building for a particular target. Start with the stage that actually stops the process; do not diagnose a later stage that the build never reached.
How do I fix UnrealHeaderTool errors?
Treat a UHT error as a reflection or Unreal-metadata problem first, not as ordinary C++ syntax trouble. Check the reflected declaration that UHT identifies before changing unrelated implementation code.
Inspect the reflected declaration
Review the class, property, function, enum, or delegate involved. Verify that macros are placed where Unreal expects them, that reflected parameter and return types are supported, and that the declaration follows the conventions for the relevant UObject type. Check the generated-header placement and include order where applicable. A declaration that looks plausible as C++ can still be invalid for Unreal’s reflection processing.
Make one declaration-level correction
Do not ask an AI assistant to rewrite the whole class just because UHT reports one declaration. Give it the first UHT diagnostic, the relevant declaration, and the installed engine version. Ask it to explain which reflection rule the declaration violates and propose the smallest patch. Review that patch against the surrounding class and rebuild so you can see whether the first error has moved or disappeared.

If UHT reports an error in generated code, trace it back to the reflected declaration that produces that code. Editing generated output is not a reliable fix for a source declaration that Unreal processes again during the next build.
How do I fix UnrealBuildTool and module errors?
When UBT fails, check whether the project, target, or module configuration permits the code to be built in the context you selected. A class from another module may be valid C++, yet unavailable because the dependency or target setup is wrong.
Check target availability and dependencies
- Identify which module contains the referenced class or subsystem.
- Confirm that the target being built includes the module.
- Verify that a cross-module dependency is declared in the appropriate build configuration.
- Check that you selected the intended target and configuration rather than assuming every target includes the same modules.
Editor, Game, Client, and Server are distinct targets; Debug, DebugGame, Development, Shipping, and Test are distinct configurations. The correct choice depends on where the code is meant to run. A dependency that is suitable for one target may not be available in another, so diagnose the failing target rather than relying on a different target’s successful build.
When should I regenerate project files?
Regenerate project files when the project structure changed and the generated project setup needs to reflect that change. Regeneration does not repair an incorrect dependency declaration or make a module available to a target that excludes it. If the same UBT error remains, return to the module and target configuration instead of repeatedly regenerating files.

Read the earliest specific compiler or linker diagnostic and fix that before interpreting later messages. One missing declaration or mismatched signature can cause a cascade of errors that makes the output look like many unrelated problems.
Check names, declarations, and definitions
Confirm that the class, function, and namespace names in the generated code exist in your project and installed engine version. Compare a function’s declaration with its definition, including parameter and return types. Check pointer and reference usage against the API being called, rather than trusting a signature that merely looks familiar.
Check includes, APIs, and symbols
A generated implementation may omit a needed include, refer to a symbol not linked into the target, or use an API signature from a different Unreal release. Confirm the engine version and verify the signature for that version before adapting your code. A spelling or namespace correction will not solve a version mismatch, and adding an include will not fix a missing module dependency.

After the smallest relevant correction, rebuild and read the new first diagnostic. If it changes, the previous error may have been blocking the compiler from reaching the next issue. Avoid fixing a long cascade all at once; that makes it difficult to tell which change resolved the original failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do with warnings?
Do not treat a warning-free build as cosmetic perfection or silence warnings as the first response. Epic’s coding standard says, “Address compiler warnings.” In generated code, a warning can signal a narrowing conversion, an ignored return value, an unsafe lifetime assumption, or a portability issue that later matters at runtime. Understand the specific warning and correct the cause where appropriate.
Why does the code compile but crash or behave incorrectly?
A successful compile shows that the code passed the relevant build stages; it does not establish that gameplay logic, object lifetime, asset references, replication, timing, or AI behavior is correct. Reproduce the symptom and inspect the state around the first incorrect result instead of suppressing the visible crash or symptom.
Use focused logs and the call path
Epic describes logs as “an invaluable tool” for seeing what logic code executes. Use the editor’s Output Log and the project’s Saved/Logs files. Add focused messages immediately before and after suspicious calls so the last successful state is visible. Include relevant object names, inputs, state, and failure context; timestamps or sequence markers can help when ordering is uncertain.
Follow the call path from the reproduction to the first state that is wrong. Logging only the eventual failure may tell you what broke, but not whether the cause was an unexpected input, an earlier branch, an unassigned reference, or a call made at the wrong time.
Check object validity and lifetime
For a crash after compilation, inspect whether each UObject reference is valid at the moment it is used, whether an actor has been destroyed, whether the required asset or component was loaded, and whether the code is running on the expected object and world. Also trace where the reference is assigned and why the code expects it to exist.
A null check can stop one crash while leaving the lifecycle or initialization defect in place. If the check changes the symptom, establish why the reference is absent and whether that absence is valid in this execution path. Do not mistake “does not crash now” for “the intended gameplay behavior is correct.”

Check initialization and timing
Compare when the generated code runs with when its dependencies become ready. Constructors, property initialization, BeginPlay, possession, replication, asynchronous asset loading, and tick do not represent interchangeable points in an object’s lifecycle. A component, subsystem, controller, world state, or asset may not be available at the time a generated function assumes it is.
If a symptom appears inconsistently, investigate ordering rather than immediately changing the business logic. Add timestamps or sequence markers around initialization and the suspicious call, then reproduce in the smallest relevant level or test path. The aim is to identify whether the required state exists when the code runs.
How do I debug AI-generated Unreal gameplay or behavior-tree code?
For AI gameplay, use Unreal’s AI Debugging tools when the question concerns Behavior Trees, EQS, or AI Perception. Generic print statements can show that a function ran, but subsystem views can help establish whether the AI received a stimulus, got a query result, made a decision, or reached the generated node.
Separate asset or configuration issues from C++ defects
- If the generated node is never reached, inspect the behavior path and the state that should lead to it.
- If AI Perception shows no stimulus, investigate the perception input and setup before assuming the C++ response code is the problem.
- If an EQS query produces an invalid result, separate that result from what the generated code does with it.
- If the AI reaches the node but takes an unexpected branch, correlate the subsystem state with focused logs around the branch decision.
This approach narrows the question: is the AI asset or configuration failing to produce the expected input, or is the C++ implementation handling that input incorrectly? It is more informative than adding broad logging everywhere.
Should I use Live Coding or do a normal rebuild?
Live Coding can recompile and patch binaries while the editor or a PIE session is running, and it is useful for supported iterative gameplay changes. Use a deliberate normal rebuild when the change affects reflected layout, module dependencies, generated headers, or target files, or when the running editor may be using a stale or mismatched binary.
| Situation | Preferred approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supported iterative gameplay edit | Live Coding may be appropriate. | Epic documents it as a way to recompile and patch binaries while the editor or PIE session is running. |
| Reflected layout or generated-header change | Use a normal rebuild of the intended Editor target. | A patch is not a substitute for validating reflection processing and the complete build context. |
| Module dependency or target-file change | Use a normal, correctly targeted rebuild. | The target and module configuration need to be assembled and checked for the intended context. |
| Editor appears to run stale or mismatched code | Close the uncertainty with a normal build and launch of the intended target. | A successful patch alone does not prove that the editor is running the binary you meant to build. |
Whichever route you choose, match the target to the intended execution context. If the goal is to see source changes in Unreal Editor, build the matching Editor target. A successful Live Coding patch is not complete validation of generated code, and it does not replace testing the original scenario.

- State the engine version, target, configuration, and whether the failure occurs during build, editor startup, PIE, or packaged execution.
- Provide only the relevant declaration or function and any directly related module or build configuration needed to understand it.
- Ask the assistant to explain the diagnostic, identify the assumption that is wrong, and propose the smallest patch.
- Review the patch for engine-version compatibility and Unreal reflection or module requirements before applying it.
- Rebuild or reproduce the same scenario, then evaluate the new first diagnostic or runtime state.
A request to “rewrite this entire class” or “fix all these errors” can replace working code and introduce new defects before the original cause is understood. If the first patch does not resolve the issue, retain the new diagnostic and revise the hypothesis rather than stacking unrelated edits.
What final checks catch AI-generated Unreal code defects?
Before accepting a generated change, review both build integration and runtime assumptions. A compile is necessary for code intended to build, but it is not evidence that gameplay behavior is correct.
- Confirm the engine version and the API signature used by the generated code.
- Check reflected declarations, macro placement, supported types, and generated-header conventions.
- Verify module dependencies and that the intended target includes the code.
- Confirm the Editor, PIE, Game, Client, or Server context in which the code executes.
- Trace object ownership, lifetime, validity, and where referenced assets or components are initialized.
- Check whether the code assumes a synchronous asset or component that may become available later.
- Review string literals and Unreal conventions such as
TEXT()where the API requires them. - Address warnings rather than suppressing them by default.
- Retest the original scenario, including relevant timing, asset, replication, and AI behavior.
Keep the repair reversible: one focused change, one relevant build or reproduction, and a clear record of whether the original failure changed. If the code builds but still produces the wrong state, return to runtime evidence; if the build stops earlier, return to the first failing stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trust AI-generated Unreal code if it uses familiar API names?
No. A plausible name or signature does not establish that the API exists in your installed Unreal version or is available to your target. Check version-specific declarations and module availability before treating generated code as authoritative.
Is it safe to edit Unreal-generated files to clear an error?
Usually, generated output is a clue to inspect the source declaration that produced it, not the durable place to make a correction. Unreal can regenerate that output, so a source-level fix is the one to verify.
Why does an Unreal Editor build succeed while a Server or Client build fails?
Targets can include different modules and execution contexts. Check whether the relevant module and dependency are available to the failing target rather than assuming that an Editor build proves every target is configured the same way.
Does passing compilation prove an AI behavior tree is configured correctly?
No. Compilation cannot show whether the AI receives perception input, obtains a useful query result, follows the intended behavior path, or reaches a generated node at runtime. Inspect the relevant AI subsystem state while reproducing the behavior.
