Short answer: A broad-market index fund is usually less exposed to a technology-specific sell-off than an AI-focused ETF, but it is not technology-free. In issuer data dated October 16, 2026, the AI-focused iShares ARTY held 85.61% of its market value in information technology, compared with 37.82% for State Street SPY. ARTY also reported a 1.99 three-year equity beta and 31.55% three-year standard deviation, both indicators of substantially higher sensitivity and recent volatility. SPY’s diversification can reduce the damage from a tech-only shock, yet its largest holdings still include Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft and other companies tied closely to technology and AI spending.
The direct answer for a technology sell-off
If your concern is specifically an AI bubble bursting or a technology-sector valuation reset, a broad-market fund such as SPY generally has the safer exposure profile. Its portfolio spans all 11 GICS sectors and held 504 companies as of October 16, 2026. ARTY, by contrast, held 50 companies selected for an artificial-intelligence theme and allocated 85.61% to information technology on the same date.
That difference matters because a concentrated thematic fund can fall when the theme falls, even if other parts of the economy are holding up. A broad-market fund can still decline sharply when its largest technology companies lose value, but losses in technology are cushioned by financial, health-care, industrial, energy, consumer, real-estate and other holdings.
Neither structure predicts when a sell-off will occur or how large it will be. The figures below describe portfolio exposure and historical risk statistics supplied by the fund issuers; they are not guarantees of future returns.

ARTY and SPY side by side
The comparison uses issuer data with the dates shown. Holdings and sector weights change as markets move and portfolios are rebalanced, so treat these figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent specification.

ARTY’s 85.61% information-technology allocation is more than double SPY’s 37.82%. ARTY’s reported beta of 1.99 means that, over the three years ending September 30, 2026, its calculated sensitivity to the relevant broad equity benchmark was approximately twice the benchmark’s movement, although beta varies by measurement period and does not forecast the next decline. Its 31.55% standard deviation measures the dispersion of its past returns over that period; it is a volatility statistic, not a promised loss estimate.
Why an AI-focused ETF is more vulnerable to a theme-specific shock
Concentration is the design, not an accident
ARTY tracks the Morningstar Global Artificial Intelligence Select Index and held 50 positions on October 16, 2026. A portfolio built around one investment theme naturally owns fewer industries and business models than a broad-market index. When expectations for AI revenue, computing demand, margins or competitive advantage change, many holdings can reprice at the same time.

The sector breakdown illustrates that concentration. Information technology represented 85.61% of ARTY’s market value, while communication accounted for 6.14% and industrials for 4.36%. Those smaller allocations may include businesses that benefit from AI infrastructure or data demand, but they do not remove the fund’s dominant technology exposure.
Sector problems can affect every company in the group
Vanguard’s technology-fund fact sheet warns that heavy investment in information technology means performance will be affected by the general condition of the sector. It identifies risks including rapid obsolescence, stronger competition, changing consumer preferences, intellectual-property expiration, regulation and legal actions. Those risks can hit companies with different products at the same time, making diversification within technology less protective than diversification across the entire market.
The same fact sheet reported a 38.4% semiconductor allocation and 60.1% of assets in its ten largest holdings as of June 30, 2026. Those figures are from a separate technology-sector fund, not ARTY, but they demonstrate how a sector or theme can combine industry concentration with large single-company positions.

Why SPY is diversified but still carries substantial technology risk
All 11 sectors provide a wider set of return drivers
State Street describes the S&P 500 as “a diversified large cap U.S. index that holds companies across all eleven GICS sectors.” That breadth means a technology sell-off does not automatically affect every holding in the same way. Banks, insurers, hospitals, drug companies, utilities, manufacturers and other businesses can respond to a technology shock according to their own earnings and economic drivers.
SPY held 504 companies on October 16, 2026. More holdings do not guarantee a smaller loss, but they reduce the chance that a few individual companies determine the fund’s entire result.
Market-cap weighting leaves the largest technology companies prominent
The S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-capitalization weighted. Companies become larger weights as their market values rise, so successful mega-cap technology companies can occupy a substantial share of the index. State Street’s October 16, 2026 holdings list showed:
| SPY holding | Portfolio weight |
|---|---|
| Nvidia | 7.85% |
| Apple | 7.59% |
| Microsoft | 5.95% |
| Amazon | 3.72% |
| Alphabet Class A | 3.03% |
| Alphabet Class C | 2.43% |
| Meta | 2.37% |
| Broadcom | 2.37% |
| Eli Lilly | 1.52% |
| Tesla | 1.51% |
The ten entries together represented a large portion of SPY, and several are directly or indirectly tied to AI investment, cloud computing, advertising technology, chips or electric vehicles. A fall in Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft and other leaders can therefore move SPY materially even though the fund owns hundreds of companies.
SPY is not an equal-weight portfolio and not a dedicated defense against a mega-cap technology correction. Its advantage is that the rest of the index can absorb part of the shock, not that the shock disappears.

Direct exposure
Direct exposure comes from companies whose primary businesses are classified in information technology or whose revenues depend heavily on chips, software, hardware, data infrastructure and related services. ARTY’s 85.61% information-technology weight makes this the dominant source of its risk.

SPY’s 37.82% information-technology weight is lower, but still large enough that a broad technology repricing can be visible in the fund’s daily performance. Its largest positions include several technology companies, so sector weight alone understates the sensitivity created by individual mega-cap holdings.
Indirect exposure
AI investment also affects companies classified outside information technology. Communication businesses can benefit from digital advertising, networks and data usage. Consumer companies may sell products or services whose demand depends on technology platforms. Industrial businesses can supply data centers, power equipment, networking hardware or automation systems. A broad index can therefore have technology-linked exposure through several sectors even when those holdings are not labeled information technology.
ARTY’s reported 6.14% communication allocation and 4.36% industrial allocation show this kind of adjacent exposure within the thematic fund. The percentages do not make ARTY diversified; they sit alongside, rather than replace, its 85.61% information-technology concentration.
How each fund could behave in different stress scenarios
Scenario 1: An AI valuation reset
In an AI-specific bubble burst, investors might reduce the prices they are willing to pay for companies associated with AI growth while leaving unrelated industries relatively stable. ARTY would normally face the greater direct pressure because most of its assets are in information technology and its mandate is tied to artificial intelligence. Its 1.99 historical beta and 31.55% historical standard deviation indicate that its past fluctuations were high, although neither statistic predicts the size of a future fall.
SPY could also decline because Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Broadcom are prominent holdings. The fund’s exposure is spread over 504 companies and all 11 sectors, so non-technology holdings could offset part of the decline. The extent of that offset would depend on the breadth of the sell-off.
Scenario 2: A broad recession
A recession can reduce earnings across many industries. In that case, SPY’s diversification may offer less protection because weakness is no longer confined to technology. Financials, industrials, consumer businesses and other sectors may all fall as profits and economic expectations deteriorate.

ARTY could still be more volatile because its holdings are concentrated, but the relative gap between the two funds may narrow when the entire equity market is under pressure. The cited data cannot establish which fund would lose more in a particular recession or how quickly either would recover.

Higher rates can reduce the present value investors assign to future growth, a mechanism that often matters for companies priced on expectations of rapid expansion. Growth-oriented technology and AI companies may therefore be sensitive to a rates shock. SPY’s diversified holdings do not eliminate that effect because its largest positions include many growth companies, but other sectors can respond differently depending on their balance sheets, pricing power and earnings timing.
Neither ARTY’s beta nor SPY’s sector breadth can forecast the market’s response to a future rate move. They are tools for understanding exposure, not timing signals.
Fees also favor the broad-market fund
ARTY’s expense ratio was 0.47% on the iShares page accessed October 20, 2026. SPY’s gross expense ratio was 0.0945% in State Street data dated October 19, 2026. The difference is about 0.3755 percentage points per year before considering trading costs, taxes or tracking differences. ARTY’s stated ratio is roughly five times SPY’s gross ratio.
Fees are deducted from fund assets and reduce returns over time, all else equal. A higher fee may be acceptable when an investor intentionally wants a specialized exposure, but it adds a persistent headwind to a thematic position. Compare the current prospectus and fee disclosures before investing because ratios can change.

Lower thematic concentration
If safer means less damage from a technology-only sell-off, SPY has the stronger structural case. Its 37.82% technology allocation is materially below ARTY’s 85.61%, and its 504 holdings span all 11 sectors.

Lower volatility
The available issuer data provide ARTY’s three-year statistics but not a directly comparable SPY beta or standard deviation. ARTY’s 31.55% standard deviation and 1.99 beta show that its historical risk was high; they do not prove that SPY will always be less volatile over every future period.
Lower single-stock dependence
SPY owns many more companies, but its market-cap methodology concentrates assets in the largest firms. Its October 16, 2026 list put Nvidia and Apple alone at 7.85% and 7.59%, respectively. A reader who wants to reduce dependence on any one company should inspect the current holdings rather than rely only on the fund’s name or number of positions.
Lower cost
SPY’s 0.0945% gross expense ratio is lower than ARTY’s 0.47% ratio in the cited issuer data. That cost difference supports SPY as a core holding when the investor does not need a dedicated AI allocation.

When a broad-market fund fits the core
A broad-market or S&P 500 index fund is the more natural core when your priority is diversified participation in the economy and reduced dependence on one sector. It can provide technology exposure without making technology the entire investment thesis. You still need to accept equity-market losses, U.S. large-cap concentration and meaningful mega-cap technology weights.
When an AI-focused ETF may be appropriate as a satellite
An AI-focused ETF can fit as a satellite position when you deliberately want concentrated exposure to companies selected for an AI theme and can tolerate larger drawdowns, higher volatility and a higher expense ratio. The position should be sized with the understanding that its risks are correlated: many holdings can decline together when expectations for the theme change.
Before buying, read the current fact sheet and holdings file, check the technology and top-position weights, and decide what percentage of your overall portfolio you are willing to expose to one theme. Buy an ETF through a brokerage only after confirming the fund’s availability, trading costs, tax treatment and the disclosures that apply in your jurisdiction.
A practical decision checklist
- Define the shock you fear. If it is specifically an AI or technology valuation reset, prioritize lower technology concentration. If it is a recession affecting all stocks, sector diversification may not prevent losses.
- Check the current sector weights. Use the latest issuer data rather than relying on the October 2026 snapshots. Weights change as prices move and portfolios are rebalanced.
- Inspect the largest holdings. A broad fund can still be driven by mega-cap companies. Confirm whether the concentration matches your risk tolerance.
- Compare volatility measures over the same dates. Beta and standard deviation are useful only when you understand the period, benchmark and calculation. Do not treat ARTY’s historical figures as forecasts.
- Account for fees. Subtract the expense ratio from expected returns over your intended holding period, while recognizing that actual results also reflect trading, taxes and tracking differences.
- Assign the fund a role. Use a diversified index as the core if broad exposure is the goal; use a thematic fund only when the concentration is intentional and limited to a level you can withstand.
- Rebalance by policy, not headlines. Decide in advance how you will respond if AI stocks surge or plunge. A written allocation rule can prevent a temporary theme from becoming an unintended portfolio takeover.
Limits of the comparison
The ARTY and SPY figures are from different issuer pages and measurement dates: sector weights and holdings are dated October 16, 2026; ARTY’s beta and standard deviation are dated September 30, 2026; ARTY’s expense ratio was accessed October 20, 2026; and SPY’s gross expense ratio is dated October 19, 2026. This timing matters because market values, index membership and portfolio weights change.
The available data do not provide a matching SPY beta or standard deviation, ARTY’s complete top-ten concentration, or percentage-by-country geographic allocations for both funds. It would be misleading to manufacture those comparisons. The strongest evidence is the structural contrast that is available: ARTY’s 85.61% information-technology weight and 50 holdings versus SPY’s 37.82% technology weight, 504 holdings and exposure across all 11 GICS sectors.
State Street notes that ETFs generally move up or down with the value of their applicable index and can trade at a discount during market stress. Diversification reduces dependence on one theme; it does not prevent losses, guarantee liquidity at a desired price or hedge every technology shock.
