For most investors building a diversified, long-term portfolio, a low-cost broad index fund is the sturdier starting point. An AI ETF is usually better treated as a targeted satellite holding: it can give concentrated exposure to an artificial-intelligence value chain, but its holdings, methodology, turnover, valuations and business risks can produce larger swings. The right choice depends on the portfolio role you need, the AI exposure you already own and the fund’s actual rules—not on the “AI” label alone.
What you are buying
Broad index fund: a core-market building block
A broad index fund follows a rules-based benchmark designed to represent a wide part of the stock market. A large-cap benchmark such as the S&P 500 spreads ownership across hundreds of companies and multiple sectors. Most broad funds are market-cap weighted, so the largest companies have the greatest influence on returns.
This structure is intended to provide a diversified core with transparent rules and low ongoing costs. It does not eliminate market risk, and it can still be heavily influenced by the largest companies or by a particular sector. “Broad” describes the benchmark’s coverage, not an equal allocation to every industry.
AI ETF: a theme or value-chain allocation
An AI ETF selects companies using a thematic definition of artificial intelligence. The eligibility rules can include revenue exposure, patents, natural-language descriptions, analyst classifications or other scoring systems. The resulting portfolio may contain chip designers, data-center and networking suppliers, cloud and software companies, consulting firms and other businesses positioned to benefit from AI spending.

Some holdings may not earn most of their current revenue from AI. A company can qualify because it supplies infrastructure, develops software, owns relevant intellectual property or is expected to gain from adoption. Read the index methodology and prospectus to see what “AI exposure” means in that particular fund.
What a broad fund already gives you in AI exposure
A broad index fund is not an anti-technology position. Vanguard’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet for the S&P 500 ETF (VOO) reported 504 stocks, an expense ratio of 0.03%, information-technology exposure of 32.9% and NVIDIA at 7.6% of assets. Those figures are a snapshot for that date and can change as prices, index membership and fund holdings change.
| VOO fact-sheet item | Reported value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Number of stocks | 504 | As of March 31, 2026 |
| Expense ratio | 0.03% | As reported in the March 31, 2026 fact sheet |
| Information technology | 32.9% | Portfolio sector weight on March 31, 2026 |
| NVIDIA | 7.6% | Portfolio weight on March 31, 2026 |
| Portfolio turnover | 2.4% | Fact-sheet figure; turnover varies over time |
Therefore, buying an S&P 500 fund can already give you meaningful exposure to companies involved in chips, cloud computing and software. An AI ETF may increase the concentration and add businesses outside that benchmark, but it is not the only way to own companies benefiting from AI.

“AI ETF” is not a standardized category. Two funds with similar names can hold different companies because their index providers use different definitions, weighting limits and rebalancing schedules.
Common AI subthemes
The iShares Future AI & Tech ETF prospectus cited four subthemes: generative AI; AI data and infrastructure; AI software; and AI services. This type of structure can produce exposure across the supply chain rather than only to companies selling a consumer-facing AI application.

The same cited filing reported 91% portfolio turnover. That number is specific to the filing and period reported; it is not a permanent characteristic of every AI ETF. High turnover can result when a fund changes constituents, rebalances weights or responds to a rapidly changing definition of the theme.
Eligibility is not the same as current AI revenue
A thematic index may include a semiconductor manufacturer, data-center equipment supplier or enterprise software company even when AI is one part of a much larger business. Conversely, a newer specialist may be excluded if it does not meet the index’s size, liquidity or listing requirements. Read the methodology’s revenue tests, scoring process, minimum market capitalization, country rules and exclusion criteria before assuming what the fund owns.

AI ETF versus broad index fund: the decision dimensions
| Dimension | AI ETF | Broad index fund |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio role | Targeted satellite exposure to an AI theme or value chain | Core market exposure and diversification |
| Selection | Thematic scoring or eligibility rules; definitions differ by index | Rules-based broad benchmark such as the S&P 500 |
| Diversification | Can be concentrated by theme, sector, country or issuer | Broader across sectors, although large-cap technology can still be substantial |
| Costs and turnover | Check the expense ratio and turnover; methodology changes can matter | Often low-cost; VOO reported a 0.03% expense ratio and 2.4% turnover in its fact sheet |
| Key risks | Theme concentration, AI business-model risk, methodology changes and obsolescence | Market risk, index concentration, tracking error and large-cap concentration |
| Question to answer | How much targeted AI exposure do I want? | What low-cost core exposure do I need? |
Why AI ETFs can be riskier as a core holding
Concentration and correlated losses
An AI ETF can own many companies that depend on the same spending cycle. If data-center investment slows, customers delay deployments or investors reduce valuations for growth stocks, several holdings may fall together. Counting the number of tickers can overstate diversification when those companies share customers, suppliers or economic drivers.
Valuation sensitivity
Expected AI growth may already be reflected in share prices. A company can deliver strong operational results and still produce a poor investment return if its valuation falls faster than earnings grow. A broad fund also faces valuation risk, but its exposure is spread across more businesses and economic sectors.
High research and capital spending
AI businesses often require expensive computing capacity, specialized employees, data and continual research. The VistaShares Artificial Intelligence Supercycle ETF prospectus identifies high research and capital expenditures as an AI-related risk. Heavy spending can pressure cash flow, particularly if demand or pricing weakens.

Rapid product obsolescence
The same prospectus warns that rapid product obsolescence can hurt companies whose technology is surpassed by a new model, architecture or application. An index that looked well positioned at one rebalance can contain businesses facing a different competitive landscape months later.
Intellectual-property, legal and regulatory exposure
AI companies may depend on patents, licensed data, proprietary models and software. Disputes over ownership, training data, privacy, competition policy or content can raise costs or restrict products. The VistaShares filing also identifies legal, regulatory and product-safety exposure. Those risks can affect both pure-play developers and suppliers in the broader AI chain.
Methodology and implementation risk
Index providers decide which companies qualify, how they are weighted and when they are removed. A fund can therefore drift from the exposure you expected. Review rebalancing dates, constituent buffers, weighting caps, liquidity screens and the treatment of mergers or renamed businesses.
How to decide which role belongs in your portfolio
1. Define the job before choosing the ticker
Use a broad index fund as the default candidate when your priority is diversified market exposure, transparent rules, a long time horizon and a low ongoing cost. Consider an AI ETF only when you deliberately want a smaller, concentrated allocation to the theme and can tolerate larger drawdowns and changing holdings.
2. Map your existing exposure
List every fund and account you own, then identify overlapping companies, sectors and countries. A broad fund may already have substantial technology exposure. Adding an AI ETF can increase the weight of the same mega-cap companies rather than diversify you.

3. Inspect the actual holdings
The SEC’s investor bulletin advises investors to “look through the index to the actual holdings of the fund” when evaluating non-traditional index funds. Check the current holdings file, top-ten percentage, sector weights, geographic distribution and issuer concentration. Compare those figures with your portfolio, not just with the fund’s marketing description.
4. Read the methodology and prospectus
Confirm how the index defines AI, what evidence a company needs to qualify, how often it rebalances and whether the fund uses market-cap, equal, tiered or capped weighting. Read the prospectus for principal risks, derivative use, securities lending, closure provisions and the statement of investment purpose.
5. Compare total ownership costs
Start with the expense ratio, then consider turnover, bid-ask spreads, trading commissions where applicable, fund-size and liquidity. A low expense ratio does not guarantee a small tracking difference, and a higher-cost thematic fund must add enough value for its intended role to justify the difference.
6. Set a rebalancing rule
Decide in advance how you will keep a satellite allocation from becoming the portfolio’s largest risk. A calendar-based review or a percentage-band rule is more disciplined than selling only after a dramatic rise or fall. Account for taxes and transaction costs in your jurisdiction.

Broad fund only
An investor seeking one simple equity core could use a broad index fund and accept the technology exposure that comes with the benchmark. This approach avoids adding a separate thematic mandate and keeps the main decision focused on asset allocation, time horizon and risk tolerance.
Broad core with a small AI satellite
An investor who wants a deliberate AI tilt could keep most equity exposure in a broad fund and place a limited portion in an AI ETF. The satellite should be sized so a severe decline would not derail the overall plan. Review whether its top holdings duplicate the core before deciding its size.
Large thematic allocation
A portfolio dominated by AI ETFs is a concentrated technology-and-growth bet, even if the fund owns dozens of securities. It requires the investor to accept theme-specific drawdowns, potentially high turnover and the possibility that the index definition fails to capture the next successful technology.

What to check on a fund page before buying
| Check | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Index objective | Reveals the intended exposure | Does the fund target AI revenue, enabling infrastructure, patents or a broad technology theme? |
| Top-ten weight | Shows issuer concentration | How much of the portfolio is controlled by the largest positions? |
| Sector and country weights | Identifies hidden concentration | Could one sector, market or currency drive most of the result? |
| Expense ratio | Reduces returns every year | Is the fee appropriate for a satellite allocation? |
| Turnover | Signals trading and potential tax effects | Is the published figure a one-period snapshot, and how often does the index rebalance? |
| Holdings overlap | Prevents accidental doubling-up | Which companies are already present in my broad funds? |
| Tracking difference | Shows how the fund follows its index after costs | Has the fund historically delivered what its index promises? |
| Fund size and liquidity | Affects trading execution and closure risk | Can I buy or sell at a reasonable spread? |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by label alone: Read the holdings and methodology because “AI” can mean infrastructure, software, services or companies with only indirect exposure.
- Assuming more tickers means more diversification: Measure concentration by issuer, sector, country and shared economic drivers.
- Ignoring the core fund’s technology weight: Quantify overlap before adding a thematic ETF.
- Comparing fees without turnover: Consider both the expense ratio and the trading activity needed to maintain the index.
- Treating a recent winner as a permanent allocation: Reassess valuation, competition, regulation and the fund’s current rules.
- Using a satellite as a substitute for a plan: Establish an overall asset-allocation policy, emergency reserves and tax strategy separately from any thematic purchase.
What “best AI ETF” means in practice
There is no universally best AI ETF. The suitable fund is the one whose objective, holdings and risk profile match the role you have defined. For a long-term satellite, prioritize a clear and repeatable methodology, reasonable concentration limits, understandable subthemes, transparent holdings, acceptable turnover and a cost you can justify. A fund with the most exciting name may be less useful than one whose actual exposure complements—rather than duplicates—your core holdings.
Practical and personal considerations
Brokerage availability, tax treatment, account rules and suitability standards vary by country and by investor. ETF holdings, expense ratios, turnover, index eligibility and performance are changing facts, so verify the current prospectus and fact sheet before trading. Neither a broad index fund nor an AI ETF guarantees a profit or protects against a market decline.
