The best AI speaking app depends on the kind of practice you need: open-ended conversation, guided roleplay, a structured speaking course, or detailed pronunciation feedback. Compare the activity and feedback—not just the “AI” label—and check that the feature works for your language, device, and plan before paying.

What counts as an AI speaking app?

The label covers different kinds of practice. Some apps let you talk through a relatively open conversation; others give you a scenario to roleplay, guide you through a curriculum, or focus on analyzing pronunciation. Those formats solve different problems, so a feature list alone is not a reliable ranking.

Also separate product features from proof of results. An app may offer simulated conversation or detailed corrections, but those descriptions do not establish that it improves proficiency. An independent review reported testing five apps from 15 to 28 June 2026 with shared Spanish and French prompts. Its comparison covered conversation quality, pronunciation feedback, curriculum, language coverage, and paid annual value; it was a product test, not a learning-efficacy trial.

Compare the practice format and feedback

Start with what you want to do during a typical session, then look at how and when the app responds. “Feedback” can mean a pronunciation score, corrections during a lesson, or a recap after an interaction.

App Practice described in the sources Feedback and structure Important qualification
Speak Speaking-oriented curriculum with drills, roleplay, and an open tutor mode, according to the independent review. Combines guided practice with a less-structured conversation option. Premium Plus is described as adding personalization, mistake-targeted lessons, and expanded custom lessons. The independent review’s hands-on conclusions apply to its stated test languages and dates. Pronunciation Coach is limited to English learners, according to the feature comparison.
ELSA Speak Roleplays or chats, an AI Conversation Coach, and Speech Analyzer under Premium, according to the feature comparison. The independent review characterizes ELSA as pronunciation-focused and reports phoneme-level feedback as a product feature. The feature comparison describes response-level feedback in supported lessons. The sources identify English-only coverage and lesson or platform constraints. Do not assume its scoring evaluates every accent equally.
Duolingo Max Video Call and Roleplay, according to the feature comparison. The comparison describes feedback after a call or interaction, including a transcript or post-interaction feedback—not necessarily correction during every turn. Availability varies by language or course. The comparison says Max is purchasable only in the mobile app and does not show pricing on the website.
HelloTalk Tools for finding and communicating with human language partners. Offers human exchange rather than an AI conversation scenario. Partner availability and quality vary; it is an adjacent option, not a like-for-like AI tutor.

The descriptions above come from a feature comparison and an independent review; they do not establish a universal winner. In particular, response-level pronunciation feedback, a post-conversation recap, and access to a human partner are different kinds of help.

Choose by your immediate learning goal

If you want more speaking volume

Favor an app with an open tutor or conversation mode if you want to practice forming your own responses rather than only repeating prepared lines. Check whether the conversation stays usable in your target language and whether the plan includes enough access for your routine.

If you want a guided path

Look for a curriculum, drills, and progression through lessons. A structured course can reduce the need to invent prompts or decide what to study next. Speak is described as combining drills and roleplay with an open tutor mode; check which of those activities are included in the tier you would buy.

If pronunciation is the priority

Compare the actual feedback granularity. A phoneme-level feature or response-level correction is more specific than a single overall score, but it still does not guarantee that every accent is assessed equally. ELSA is described as pronunciation-focused; verify the language, lesson, and platform requirements for the analysis feature.

If you want human exchange

HelloTalk may fit if your goal is communication with people rather than simulated AI practice. The trade-off is that partner availability and interaction quality are not controlled in the same way as a structured lesson.

Check language, device, plan, and usage limits

A feature may exist in an app without being available for every language, course, platform, or subscription tier. Before subscribing, confirm the exact combination you need rather than relying on a general claim that the app supports AI conversation.

  • Language: Confirm that the specific speaking feature supports your target language, not only that the app interface or broader product does.
  • Device and platform: Check whether the feature works on your phone, tablet, or other intended device. Some lesson or analysis tools have platform constraints.
  • Plan: Identify which tier unlocks the activity and its feedback. For example, the feature comparison places ELSA Speech Analyzer under Premium and distinguishes Speak Premium from Premium Plus.
  • Usage: Look for session caps, lesson limits, or other restrictions. The available comparison does not establish a single usage allowance that applies across services, so check the app’s current plan details.
  • Rollout and availability: Check availability in your country and account. Duolingo Max features vary by language or course.

Treat published prices as dated, local snapshots

Prices can change by country, platform, sale, and billing interval. A note.com comparison by AI編集部, published 15 August 2026 and reporting a snapshot checked on 6 August 2026, gives these Japan-market figures for Speak annual plans:

Plan Reported Japan-market annual price Source and date
Speak Premium ¥19,800 per year AI編集部’s note.com comparison, published 15 August 2026; snapshot checked 6 August 2026.
Speak Premium Plus ¥29,800 per year AI編集部’s note.com comparison, published 15 August 2026; snapshot checked 6 August 2026.

These are historical Japan-market figures, not current quotes for other regions. The same comparison reported multiple ELSA plan durations and sale prices at that time, but some monthly details could not be confirmed from static pages. It did not show Duolingo Max pricing on the website and reported that it could be purchased only in the mobile app. For any service, check the official app store or checkout for your country immediately before subscribing, including trial length, renewal terms, billing interval, and taxes if shown.

How strong is the evidence behind app comparisons?

A feature comparison tells you what a service says it offers; it is not an independent measure of teaching quality. The independent review described above used shared Spanish and French prompts over a defined two-week test period and evaluated product dimensions. That scope can help compare those tested experiences, but it does not establish long-term learning outcomes or cover every language, learner, or app version.

One 2026 comparison relayed ELSA’s claim of “over 90 million learners.” That is a vendor-reported reach figure, not an independently audited user count and not evidence that users achieved a particular proficiency gain. Use user totals and feature lists as context, not as substitutes for evidence about learning.
