Short answer: email security blocks malicious messages and links before they reach users, endpoint detection and response (EDR) detects and contains activity on laptops, servers, and other devices, while security information and event management (SIEM) correlates telemetry across the whole environment. They solve different problems rather than competing for the same job. A small Microsoft 365 organization can usually start with mailbox protections, multifactor authentication, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, and EDR-capable endpoint protection, then add SIEM when compliance, alert volume, or incident complexity requires centralized analytics.
What the three tools protect
The most useful way to compare these products is by the layer they can see. Email security sees messages and collaboration content. EDR sees what happens on an individual device. SIEM sees a stream of events from many systems and looks for relationships that no single control can establish.
| Tool layer | Primary scope | Typical telemetry | Typical response | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Email security | Mailboxes and collaboration messages | Sender and recipient identity, message content, attachments, URLs, delivery and user-reporting events | Quarantine, block, detonate or scan attachments and links, remove messages, and report campaigns | Stopping phishing, malware delivery, impersonation, and malicious links before a click |
| EDR | Laptops, desktops, servers, and other managed endpoints | Processes, command lines, network connections, logins, registry changes, file-system activity, and behavioral signals | Isolate a device, quarantine or remove a file, stop a process, investigate an incident, and run configured automatic actions | Finding post-delivery execution, persistence, ransomware, and lateral movement on a device |
| SIEM | Cross-environment security operations | Aggregated events from identity, endpoints, email, cloud workloads, applications, network devices, and other systems | Correlate alerts, open incidents, trigger playbooks, isolate devices, quarantine data, and support investigation and compliance reporting | Connecting separate clues into multistage detections and a central audit trail |
The boundaries are practical, not absolute. A modern email platform can feed its phishing and malware events into a SIEM. An EDR platform can send endpoint alerts and event data to a SIEM. XDR sits above individual products by correlating signals across endpoints, email, identity, cloud workloads, and network infrastructure.

Email security: the pre-click control
Email security works at the message and collaboration layer. Its most important opportunity is timing: it can reject, quarantine, rewrite, or warn on a message before a user opens an attachment, follows a link, or discloses credentials.

Controls commonly included
Microsoft’s documented Defender for Office 365 ladder includes built-in anti-malware, anti-spam, anti-phishing, impersonation protection, Safe Links, Safe Attachments, quarantine, and reporting. These controls inspect both the sender and the content. Impersonation defenses are particularly useful for executive-name fraud and look-alike domains; Safe Links and Safe Attachments add analysis to URLs and files that may appear benign at initial delivery.
Microsoft lists Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 at $2.00 per user per month, paid yearly (Microsoft, 2026). That is a published license figure for that plan and billing term, not a universal price for every edition, region, contract, or reseller. Verify the current commercial terms before purchase.
What Plan 2 adds
Plan 2 adds Threat Explorer, advanced hunting, automated investigation and response, attack simulation training, and XDR integration. Those functions matter when an organization needs to trace a campaign across users, investigate related indicators, automate remediation, or rehearse user responses rather than merely block individual messages.
Domain authentication is part of email security
Filtering cannot fully compensate for weak domain controls. Microsoft recommends configuring SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for domains used and unused in Microsoft 365. SPF identifies authorized mail-transfer sources, DKIM signs messages so recipients can validate that content was sent by an authorized service, and DMARC lets a domain owner publish an alignment and enforcement policy. NIST’s DNS-based email-security work likewise focuses on authenticating mail-transfer agents, signing and encrypting email, and reducing risk in information exchanged by email.
Include parked, legacy, and sending-disabled domains in the review. An unused domain can still be abused for convincing impersonation if it has no defensive policy. Roll out DMARC from monitoring to enforcement deliberately, because legitimate third-party senders must be aligned before a strict policy is safe.
Where email security stops
Email security can identify a dangerous message, but it does not provide the endpoint process and memory visibility that EDR provides. If a user opens a previously undetected file, installs a malicious browser extension, or runs a command delivered through another channel, mailbox telemetry alone cannot show the resulting process tree, persistence, registry changes, or local network activity. That is the point at which endpoint controls become necessary.

EDR: device-level detection and containment
Endpoint detection and response continuously records activity on protected devices and applies behavioral analytics to it. Microsoft describes Defender for Endpoint as producing near-real-time, actionable detections, grouping related alerts into incidents, retaining telemetry for six months, and supporting actions such as device isolation and file quarantine (Microsoft Learn documentation accessed 2026).
What EDR observes
- Process creation, parent-child relationships, command lines, and suspicious execution patterns.
- Outbound and inbound network activity associated with processes and users.
- Interactive and service logins, privilege changes, and account behavior.
- Registry edits, scheduled tasks, startup persistence, and file-system changes.
- Behavioral indicators associated with ransomware, credential theft, exploit chains, and lateral movement.
This depth lets an analyst answer questions that a message gateway cannot: Which process launched the payload? Which account authenticated to the device? Did the same hash or command line appear elsewhere? What changed immediately before encryption began?
Response and automatic attack disruption
EDR response can include isolating a device from the network while preserving approved management connectivity, quarantining a file, stopping a process, and collecting additional evidence. Microsoft says its automatic attack-disruption capability correlates signals and uses AI to contain active ransomware, business-email-compromise, and adversary-in-the-middle attacks. Automatic actions should be tested against business-critical systems and accompanied by an exception and recovery procedure; an overly broad isolation rule can interrupt legitimate operations.
EDR requirements for an operational program
CISA’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation requirements describe several capabilities to look for:
- Administrator-initiated behavioral searches, so investigators can query activity instead of waiting for a prebuilt alert.
- Integration of alerts and responses with an agency SIEM platform.
- Export of endpoint event data in a usable format.
- Execution of configured automatic response actions.
For a business, these translate into practical buying questions: Can the agent cover every supported operating system and server class? Can an administrator isolate a device during an incident? Is raw or structured telemetry export available? How long can investigators search it? Are automated actions auditable and reversible?

SIEM: the cross-environment evidence layer
A SIEM collects logs and security signals from many systems, normalizes them, and correlates them into detections, incidents, dashboards, and investigation timelines. It is not a replacement for an email gateway or an endpoint agent: it depends on those controls and on the quality of the data they send.

What a SIEM adds
Microsoft Sentinel is described by Microsoft as a cloud-native SIEM and security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) platform. It analyzes anomalies and multistage threats, supports user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA), imports threat intelligence, and can automate actions such as device isolation and data quarantine when integrated with Defender XDR.
Correlation is the differentiator. A single suspicious sign-in may be low confidence. The same sign-in followed by a mailbox rule change, an endpoint PowerShell process, and an unusual data transfer is a stronger incident. A SIEM can retain and join those events according to the organization’s identity, asset, and time context.
Data onboarding and operating cost
SIEM economics differ from the other two layers. Email security is commonly licensed per user, and EDR is commonly licensed per device; SIEM costs are generally driven by log ingestion, retention, and the amount of analysis and automation required. The published material does not establish a universal Sentinel price, so obtain a current estimate based on measured daily data volume, retention requirements, and enabled analytics.

A useful SIEM needs connectors, parsing, detection rules, suppression and tuning, identity mapping, retention policies, dashboards, and someone to investigate the resulting incidents. Buying ingestion capacity without staffing and detection engineering can create an expensive alert archive rather than a functioning security program.
Feeding email and endpoint events into a SIEM
Microsoft documents exporting Defender for Office 365 phishing, malware, URL, and automated-investigation events to a SIEM through the Office 365 Activity Management API. Confirm which event types, fields, latency, retention, and API limits apply to your tenant, then map them to the SIEM’s normalized schema. The same design exercise is required for EDR: define the endpoint events needed for detection and investigation instead of forwarding every available record by default.
Side-by-side comparison
| Decision axis | Email security | EDR | SIEM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage scope | Message and collaboration layer | Device layer | Cross-environment telemetry |
| Telemetry depth | Message metadata and content, attachments, URLs, and delivery events | Processes, memory-related behavior, network activity, logins, registry, and files | Broad logs and identity, cloud, endpoint, email, and network events |
| Primary question answered | Should this message or link reach the user? | What is this device or process doing right now? | How do events across systems form one attack or compliance record? |
| Fastest response | Quarantine or block a message, link, or attachment | Isolate a device or quarantine an artifact | Orchestrate actions across connected systems |
| Typical time to value | Focused controls can be enabled quickly after policy and domain setup | Focused value follows agent deployment and coverage validation | Value follows connector setup, detection engineering, tuning, retention design, and analyst capacity |
| Important limitation | Cannot show endpoint process and memory activity | Cannot by itself correlate every identity, cloud, email, and network source | Cannot create endpoint or mailbox telemetry that has not been collected |
Do you need all three?
There is no universal requirement to buy three separate products. The right sequence depends on the organization’s users, devices, attack paths, regulatory obligations, and ability to operate the controls.

- Deploy EDR-capable endpoint protection to every supported workstation and server, not only to administrator laptops.
- Document who can isolate a device, release a message, restore a file, and investigate an incident.
- Add SIEM when the organization needs centralized audit evidence, has multiple log sources that must be correlated, or can support the required tuning and response work.
This sequence is an architectural recommendation based on the different control scopes: email and EDR provide focused protection first, while SIEM becomes more valuable as the environment and investigation burden grow.
Ransomware or lateral-movement concern
Prioritize complete EDR coverage and verify that device isolation, file quarantine, and automatic response are configured and tested. Keep strong email filtering because phishing is a common entry route, and centralize the resulting endpoint, identity, and email events so investigators can see the attack path. CISA explicitly recommends email-gateway filtering, EDR or application allowlisting, and SIEM-based centralized logging as complementary measures.
Mature security operations center or regulated environment
Use email security and EDR as collection and enforcement layers feeding a SIEM/XDR operating model. Define retention by investigation and regulatory need, enable threat hunting and UEBA where the data quality supports it, and maintain SOAR playbooks for repeatable actions such as disabling an account, isolating a device, or quarantining a message. Microsoft documents Sentinel and Defender integration for this architecture.
How to choose an AI cybersecurity tool
1. Map the attack path before comparing features
List the ways an attacker can enter, execute, persist, move, and exfiltrate: inbound email, cloud identity, exposed services, removable media, browser sessions, and unmanaged devices. Mark which product can see and stop each step. A feature that does not cover an actual path should not drive the purchase.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Check coverage and identity assumptions
- For email, include all domains, shared mailboxes, aliases, and third-party senders.
- For EDR, count workstations, servers, virtual machines, and devices that leave the corporate network.
- For SIEM, inventory identity providers, cloud services, firewalls, applications, email, and endpoint sources.
- Confirm that events retain the user, device, IP address, timestamp, and correlation identifiers needed for an investigation.
3. Test response, not just detection
Run a controlled exercise: report a simulated phish, isolate a test endpoint, quarantine a test artifact, and execute a SIEM playbook. Measure approval steps, action latency, audit records, rollback, and who receives the notification. “AI-powered” detection is useful only when an operator can act safely on the result.

4. Evaluate integration and portability
Ask for API documentation, supported schemas, export formats, retention controls, identity integration, and rate limits. Verify that email and EDR alerts can feed the selected SIEM and that incidents can be sent back to response systems. Avoid an architecture in which data can be viewed in one console but not searched, exported, or acted on elsewhere.
5. Model the complete cost
Separate per-user email licensing, per-device EDR licensing, and SIEM ingestion and retention charges. Add the operational cost of deployment, tuning, incident response, threat hunting, API usage, and long-term storage. Recheck prices and product-program availability for the buyer’s geography and contract term; the only published figure here is Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 at $2.00 per user per month paid yearly in 2026.
Common deployment mistakes and fixes
Buying SIEM before collecting the right signals
A SIEM cannot compensate for missing mailbox, endpoint, or identity telemetry. Define the incidents you need to investigate, then onboard the minimum data set that answers those questions. Expand sources after parsing, ownership, and alert quality are stable.
Deploying EDR to only a sample of devices
Partial coverage leaves blind spots that attackers can deliberately exploit. Reconcile the EDR inventory with directory, asset-management, and procurement records; investigate devices that are inactive, unsupported, or repeatedly failing to check in.
Assuming an email gateway replaces domain authentication
Filtering protects recipients, while SPF, DKIM, and DMARC establish whether messages claiming to use your domains are authorized and aligned. Implement both, including policies for domains that do not send mail.
Turning on automatic isolation without a recovery path
Automatic attack disruption can limit ransomware and other active attacks, but it can also interrupt a critical server if policy scope is wrong. Test with designated devices, document exceptions, preserve management access, and define who can release an isolation action after verification.
Forwarding every event without tuning
Excessive SIEM ingestion increases cost and hides high-value incidents. Start with authentication, privileged actions, endpoint detections, email threats, cloud control-plane changes, and data-access events that match your threat model. Use suppression and enrichment deliberately, and review detection performance after each change.
A practical implementation checklist
- Identify all mail domains, including unused and legacy domains.
- Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC with an observed transition to enforcement.
- Enable anti-malware, anti-spam, anti-phishing, impersonation protection, Safe Links, Safe Attachments, quarantine, and reporting.
- Deploy EDR to the complete supported endpoint and server inventory.
- Verify near-real-time alerting, six-month telemetry search where provided, device isolation, and file quarantine.
- Define administrator roles for message release, endpoint response, and SIEM investigation.
- Connect email and EDR events to the SIEM through supported APIs or connectors.
- Set retention, ingestion, and data-access policies before enabling broad collection.
- Create and test playbooks for phishing, compromised credentials, ransomware, and suspicious lateral movement.
- Review coverage, false positives, response latency, and unmonitored assets at a scheduled interval.
Bottom line
Email security is the pre-click barrier, EDR is the device investigation and containment layer, and SIEM is the cross-environment correlation and orchestration layer. For most small organizations, email hardening and complete EDR coverage deliver value sooner than a full SIEM deployment. Add SIEM when centralized evidence, compliance, multiple telemetry sources, or complex incidents justify its ingestion costs and operating workload. The strongest architecture uses all three in sequence: prevent delivery, detect and contain execution, then correlate the evidence and coordinate response.
