Verdict: Aggelos 2 is a compact, colorful retro metroidvania that successfully expands the first Aggelos from straightforward stages into a more exploratory adventure. Its upgrade-driven progression, 16-bit presentation and angel/demon contrast make it a good fit for players who enjoy revisiting areas to unlock new routes. It is less convincing if you want a precise map, minimal backtracking or a light/dark system that constantly changes how you play.

At the listed Switch price of £16.99 in the UK or $19.99 in North America, the sequel is easiest to recommend to fans of classic action-platformers who are comfortable taking their own notes and tolerating some cleanup friction. A discount is sensible for players who are curious but uncertain about the navigation and completion demands.

What Aggelos 2 is on Switch

Aggelos 2 is an action-platformer published by PQube and developed by WONDERBOY BOBI. Nintendo describes it as an adventure across two opposing worlds in which Aggelos, an angel, must use a shadowy demon form to survive in Lumen. The sequel keeps the fast combat and precision platforming associated with the series, but its structure is substantially broader than the first game’s level-by-level approach.

Eric Sandler of The Gaming Outsider describes that change as a move from the original’s straightforward level design to a “full metroidvania-style action platformer.” In practical terms, you explore connected spaces, obtain or recover abilities, solve environmental puzzles, defeat bosses and return to earlier locations when a new movement option opens a previously inaccessible route.

How the sequel’s progression works

The basic loop is explore, find a tool or ability, use it to reach a new section, fight through hazards and bosses, then revisit older areas with your expanded movement options. Nintendo specifically highlights flight, wall grabs, dashes and special attacks. The Gaming Outsider also mentions an early projectile bracelet, sword and wings, giving you a sense of how exploration and combat tools overlap.

This structure changes the rhythm of the original. Instead of treating each level as a mostly self-contained challenge, Aggelos 2 asks you to remember places that were blocked, too high or otherwise unreachable. A route that appears decorative on your first visit may become important after you acquire a mobility upgrade. That is the central source of its satisfaction: progress is not only a stronger attack, but a growing understanding of how Lumen’s spaces connect.

Abilities are keys as well as weapons

Flight, wall grabs and dashes are valuable because they alter your movement options, not merely your damage output. A projectile bracelet can help you attack from a safer distance, while the sword remains a direct close-range answer to ordinary enemies. Wings and other traversal abilities make platforming sections more flexible and turn previously intimidating gaps into readable routes.

The game therefore rewards players who inspect side paths instead of following the most obvious route. Puzzles and secrets are part of the same progression language as combat: when an obstacle cannot be solved immediately, the intended answer is often to continue exploring and return with a later ability rather than force the room.

Angel and demon forms explained

Aggelos 2’s defining idea is that Aggelos can alternate between an angel form and a shadowy demon form. Nintendo presents them as deliberately opposed styles. The angel is slower and more disciplined, while the demon is agile, aggressive and focused on power.

Form Emphasis described by Nintendo Best fit
Angel Slower, disciplined movement and combat Players who prefer deliberate positioning and controlled attacks
Demon Agility, aggression and power Players who want faster movement and a more forceful approach

The contrast gives encounters a tactical layer: a careful player may favor the angel when reading hazards or controlling space, then switch to the demon when speed or offensive pressure is more useful. The forms also reinforce the game’s two-world premise instead of being a cosmetic character change.

Where the mechanic falls short

The idea is stronger than its use in every room. The Gaming Outsider’s main reservation is that the light/dark switch is not used as consistently or as deeply as the premise suggests. In other words, the forms provide a meaningful distinction, but the adventure does not always build puzzles and combat scenarios around that distinction.

That unevenness matters because a system can be enjoyable in isolation yet still feel underexploited across a full metroidvania. If you are buying primarily for a constantly evolving dual-form puzzle system, keep expectations measured. If you see the forms as complementary combat and movement options within a broader exploration game, the mechanic is easier to appreciate.

Combat, platforming, puzzles and bosses

Combat combines swordplay, projectile attacks and special abilities. The angel’s slower, more disciplined profile favors deliberate spacing, while the demon’s agility and power encourage a more assertive attack pattern. The result is a straightforward action foundation rather than a statistics-heavy role-playing system.

Platforming is equally important. Precision jumps, wall grabs, flight and dashes let the game layer movement challenges onto its interconnected map. New abilities are satisfying because they answer both practical traversal problems and the curiosity generated by suspicious ledges, gaps and alternate routes.

Puzzles are integrated into the same exploration loop. Some ask you to identify the correct route or movement ability; others are tied to the relationship between the game’s opposing forms and worlds. The available reviews do not establish a complete puzzle catalogue, so it would be misleading to promise a particular quantity or difficulty curve. The reliable expectation is a mixture of environmental problem-solving, platforming and combat encounters.

Bosses provide the major punctuation points in that loop. They test whether you have learned to combine movement and attacks rather than simply collect upgrades. Because the game emphasizes revisiting areas and accumulating tools, reaching a boss is also a check on your route knowledge and ability management.

Exploration is rewarding, but navigation is the trade-off

The strongest part of Aggelos 2 is the explore-unlock-explore rhythm. Two large areas give the adventure room for optional paths, secrets and ability-gated returns. Finding an upgrade and immediately recognizing several places where it might help creates the classic metroidvania feedback loop: the map becomes more interesting as your move set expands.

The cost is backtracking. The Gaming Outsider specifically cites repetitive returns to earlier locations, limited map zoom and weak marker functionality. Those issues are not cosmetic when a game asks you to remember several blocked paths. A map that does not communicate scale or let you mark points clearly increases the amount of external note-taking needed for efficient exploration.

Practical ways to reduce the friction

  • Record blocked routes as you encounter them. Note the room, landmark and apparent requirement rather than relying on memory.
  • Revisit by objective. When you gain flight, a wall grab or a dash, choose one region and check likely gates instead of wandering across the entire world.
  • Separate progress from completion. If a collectible is hard to locate, continue the main route and return later rather than turning every early visit into a 100-percent sweep.
  • Use the map as a reference, not a complete checklist. The reported zoom and marker limitations mean that a short written list can be more reliable than the in-game interface.

These habits do not remove the design limitation, but they make the intended exploration loop less tiring. Players who enjoy drawing their own routes or keeping notes will be more comfortable than players who expect the game to track every unresolved objective.

Visuals and music: a confident 16-bit identity

Aggelos 2’s presentation is one of its clearest strengths. Reviews consistently point to colorful 16-bit visuals and retro or chiptune-style music. The art direction gives the two-world premise an immediately readable identity, while the compact download size suits the game’s deliberately old-school format.

The presentation is not trying to compete with modern 3D spectacle. Its appeal comes from animation, color, sprite readability and the way environments suggest a larger world without abandoning a classic pixel-art language. Players who already enjoy retro action-adventure games are the most likely to value this consistency.

Music is similarly functional and atmospheric rather than cinematic. Games Freezer praised the visuals and music even while criticizing design choices that reduced the fun. That distinction is useful: the aesthetic execution is not the main reason to hesitate. The more consequential questions are navigation, backtracking and how often the form switch affects your decisions.

How reviewers rate Aggelos 2

There is no single consensus score, but the available reviews place the game in the “good to very good” range while disagreeing about how much its design friction matters.

Publication Score What the review emphasizes
The Gaming Outsider 8.0/10 Satisfying progression and strong retro appeal, balanced against repetitive backtracking, limited light/dark use, weak map zoom and markers, and a tedious 100-percent cleanup.
Switchaboo 9/10 A highly positive recommendation for fans of retro action-adventure games.
Games Freezer 7/10 Appreciation for the visuals and music, with design decisions that reduce the overall fun.
Nintendo Life No review score listed at the time checked Its listing provides Switch price and product information rather than a published numerical review score.

Read together, those scores describe a game whose strengths are easy to recognize but whose weaknesses depend heavily on personal tolerance. A player who values atmosphere, upgrades and discovery may experience the same backtracking as a reasonable cost of exploration. Someone who wants a highly legible map and a more consistently meaningful form system may land closer to the lower end of the range.

Switch price, edition and storage details

Nintendo Life lists the digital Switch version at £16.99 in the UK and $19.99 in North America. Those are regional storefront prices and can change; check the Nintendo eShop for the price in your account’s country before purchasing.

Nintendo’s official listing gives the download size as 236 MB. That is small enough that storage should rarely be the deciding factor, although the usual system and update space still applies. The listing confirms handheld, tabletop and TV support, so the same single-player adventure can be played on a portable screen or a television.

Does Aggelos 2 have a physical Switch edition?

Yes, a Chicas Gamers review reports physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. That establishes that a physical Switch product exists, but it does not guarantee current stock, the same release configuration in every country or a particular price. Availability can vary by region and retailer.

If you are specifically shopping for a cartridge, search for “Aggelos 2 Nintendo Switch physical edition” and verify that the listing is for the game itself, not a case, accessory or unrelated metroidvania. Check the region, language information, seller, included contents and return policy before ordering. Digital buyers should compare the current eShop price with any physical premium rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.

Who should buy Aggelos 2?

It is a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy 16-bit visuals and chiptune-style music more than cutting-edge presentation.
  • Prefer metroidvanias built around movement upgrades, secrets and revisiting earlier areas.
  • Like switching between a slower, disciplined angel and a faster, more aggressive demon.
  • Are willing to keep your own notes when map zoom and marker tools are limited.
  • Want a focused single-player adventure that works in handheld, tabletop or TV mode.

Consider waiting for a discount or skipping if you:

  • Find backtracking frustrating even when it leads to new upgrades or secrets.
  • Need a map with detailed zoom, dependable markers and clear completion tracking.
  • Expect every major mechanic to be used in increasingly complex ways throughout the campaign.
  • Are buying mainly for a deep light/dark puzzle system rather than a broader action-platforming adventure.
  • Want a confirmed completion-time target; the available information does not establish one, and the 100-percent cleanup is specifically described as a slog.

What to know before starting

  1. Expect a metroidvania, not a sequence of isolated stages. The sequel’s connected structure is the foundation of its design.
  2. Explore thoroughly, but do not demand immediate completion. Some routes are intended to wait for a later movement ability.
  3. Learn both forms. The angel’s control and the demon’s speed solve different combat and movement problems.
  4. Keep a simple route log. Write down distinctive landmarks and what appears to block each path.
  5. Prioritize progress over perfect cleanup. Return for difficult secrets after your ability set is broader.
  6. Decide how much the presentation matters to you. Its retro art and music are central attractions, not incidental decoration.

Final buying advice

Aggelos 2 is worth considering on Switch when the appeal of a colorful retro metroidvania outweighs the inconvenience of imperfect navigation. It expands the first game’s structure in the right direction: exploration has more purpose, upgrades open meaningful routes, and the angel/demon pairing gives combat and movement a distinct identity. The 8/10 and 9/10 reviews reflect how satisfying that loop can be.

The reservations are equally concrete. Backtracking can become repetitive, the map does not provide all the quality-of-life help a large interconnected adventure deserves, the light/dark mechanic is not always exploited deeply, and chasing every collectible can become a slog. Games Freezer’s 7/10 illustrates why those issues may substantially reduce enjoyment for some players.

Buy at the listed regional price if you already know you like retro action-adventure games and are happy to revisit areas. Otherwise, waiting for a sale is the safer choice. Skip it when precise navigation, minimal backtracking and consistently system-driven puzzles are non-negotiable priorities.
