Yes. Affinity’s native project files are designed to open across the Affinity family on iPad. An .afdesign file can be opened in Affinity Photo or Publisher, an .afphoto file can be opened in Designer or Publisher, and an .afpub file can be opened in Designer or Photo, provided the installed app version supports the document.

The important limits are version direction and feature support. A newer Affinity file may be blocked by an older iPad build, and an app that opens a document may not expose every tool or specialized object used by the app that created it. Use native opening when you need to continue editing; use PDF, SVG, PNG, PSD, or another exchange format when the receiving device only needs the finished artwork or a simplified import.

Which Affinity files open in which iPad app?

Affinity’s native format is intended to be cross-compatible. Affinity Help describes this as a core feature of the product range: any Affinity project file can be opened in any Affinity product, regardless of which Affinity product created it. On iPad, that means the three native extensions are not locked to one app.

File extension Normally created in Can be opened by What remains important
.afdesign Affinity Designer Designer, Photo, or Publisher Vector objects, layers, artboards, and document settings remain in the Affinity project structure, but tools available for editing depend on the receiving app.
.afphoto Affinity Photo Photo, Designer, or Publisher Pixel layers, masks, adjustments, live filters, and other photo-oriented objects may require Photo for the fullest editing experience.
.afpub Affinity Publisher Publisher, Designer, or Photo Pages, spreads, text flow, master pages, and publication layout are Publisher-oriented features.

“Can open” does not mean “has identical controls.” The file can be recognized as an Affinity project while the receiving app lacks the context, persona, or tool needed to modify a particular object. If an item appears unavailable, open the file in its originating app or in the newest compatible version of that app.

How to open an Affinity document on iPad

You can start from inside the Affinity app or from the iPad Files app. The exact wording can vary slightly by app release, but the workflow is the same: choose an existing document, select its storage location, and let Affinity import the native project without converting it.

  1. Close competing copies. If the document is open on another device or in another app, close it before editing the iPad copy. With cloud-synced storage, simultaneous edits can create competing versions or a conflict copy.
  2. Open the Affinity app. Launch Designer, Photo, or Publisher and remain on its Home screen.
  3. Choose Open. Use the app’s Open command rather than starting a new document. This opens the iPad document picker.
  4. Select the storage location. Browse On My iPad, iCloud Drive, a connected external drive, or another provider shown by the Files picker. Navigate to the folder containing the .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub file.
  5. Tap the document. Affinity loads the project. Large files can take longer when they contain many embedded images, live filters, linked resources, or extensive page content.
  6. Save a working copy when needed. Use Save As or duplicate the file in Files before making major changes, especially when the original is shared or stored in a synchronized folder.

Opening a template from Files

Affinity’s iPad template workflow also supports dragging an .aftemplate file from the Files app onto the Affinity Home screen. This is a template operation rather than a different project format: the template can be used to create a new document, while the original template remains available in storage.

What happens when you open a file in the “wrong” Affinity app?

Cross-app opening is useful when you need to inspect, export, or make a limited edit without returning to the original app. The receiving app interprets the same project data through its own tools.

Opening an .afdesign file in Photo

Photo can open the Designer project and let you work with the document as an Affinity file. Vector layers and shapes remain part of the project, but Photo’s editing environment is optimized for pixel work, retouching, masks, adjustments, and filters. If your task is node editing, advanced vector construction, or a Designer-specific workflow, return to Designer rather than flattening or rasterizing objects unnecessarily.

Opening an .afdesign file in Publisher

Publisher can place the Designer artwork in a publication layout, combine it with text and images, and prepare an electronic or print-ready document. This is especially useful when the artwork is one component of a brochure, book, poster, or multi-page file. Publisher’s page, spread, master-page, and text-flow features are separate from Designer’s drawing tools, so detailed vector construction is still best performed in Designer.

Opening an .afphoto file in Designer

Designer can open the Photo project so you can combine pixel content with vector artwork, logos, diagrams, or illustrations. Photo-specific adjustments and live filters may remain available as project objects, but Designer is not a substitute for every Photo tool. Keep the original .afphoto file if you may need to revise a complex photographic edit.

Opening an .afphoto file in Publisher

Publisher can use the Photo document within a page layout, allowing photographs to sit alongside text and vector elements. The publication can be edited in Publisher, but detailed pixel retouching, specialized filters, and image-development controls belong in Photo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening an .afpub file in Designer or Photo

Designer or Photo can open a Publisher project when you need to inspect or reuse its content. However, Publisher’s defining features are page management, spreads, text frames, linked text, master pages, and publication output. If a layout depends on those features, Publisher is the appropriate app for continued editing. Opening it elsewhere should be treated as an access or reuse step, not proof that every publishing control is available there.

Version compatibility: why a file can be valid but still refuse to open

The most common compatibility failure is the direction of the version change. An older app may not understand a file saved by a newer Affinity release. Affinity’s current download documentation states that the new desktop Affinity can open files created in V2, while older versions—including V2 on iPad—cannot open newer Affinity (.af) files.

File and iPad app use the same supported generation Native opening should work across Designer, Photo, and Publisher. Open it normally and check that the expected tools and resources are present.
File was saved by a newer build than the iPad app The app may report that the document was created by a later version or refuse to open it. Update the iPad app. If updating is impossible, ask the sender to resave or export to a neutral format.
File was saved by an older build Opening is generally more likely, but individual features may still be interpreted differently. Review layers, text, effects, linked assets, and output before replacing the original.
File is damaged or incomplete The app may fail regardless of version. Copy the file again from its source, verify that the transfer finished, and try a known-good local copy.

When editability in the native format is not required, the sender can export a PDF, SVG, PNG, or PSD. This avoids a version block, but the result follows the import rules of that format and will not preserve the complete Affinity project structure.

Native Affinity files versus interchange formats

Use a native file when the recipient needs layers, pages, masks, editable text, live effects, or the ability to continue the project. Use an interchange format when the goal is delivery, viewing, printing, or moving only selected content between applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Format Typical iPad use What it can preserve What to expect on import
.afdesign, .afphoto, .afpub Continue an Affinity project Affinity’s project structure, including editable objects supported by the file and app version Best option for ongoing Affinity editing; still subject to version and feature differences.
PSD Exchange layered artwork with applications that support Photoshop documents Some layers and visual properties, depending on the document Import behavior differs from native Affinity editing; verify blend modes, masks, text, and effects.
PDF Print-ready delivery, review, or page exchange Page appearance, vector output, and print information when exported appropriately Multi-page PDFs can be imported with each page placed on its own artboard in Designer; editing is not equivalent to the original project.
SVG Vector artwork exchange Many paths, shapes, fills, and strokes Document-specific effects, fonts, filters, and layout behavior may change.
EPS Legacy vector exchange and print workflows Encapsulated vector content supported by the importer Modern effects, transparency, and text handling can differ from the source.
TIFF, PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WEBP, OpenEXR Raster image exchange or final artwork Pixels, with format-specific color, alpha, and animation characteristics Usually simpler and more portable, but layers and editable objects are not retained.
RAW Camera-image development in a compatible workflow Unprocessed sensor data interpreted by the importer Opening depends on camera format and application support; it is not a replacement for an Affinity project file.

Choosing the right handoff

Choose native opening when continued editing matters

  • The recipient must edit vector paths, pixel layers, masks, text, pages, or live effects.
  • The project will move between Designer, Photo, and Publisher while remaining an Affinity document.
  • You need to preserve the document’s structure rather than only its appearance.
  • You can align the sender’s and recipient’s app versions.

Choose PDF when appearance and output matter most

PDF is usually the practical handoff for a print-ready publication, proof, or finished page. It avoids requiring the recipient to have the originating Affinity app, but imported PDF content should be treated as an exchange representation rather than a guaranteed reconstruction of the source project.

Choose SVG for selected vector artwork

SVG is useful when a logo, icon, diagram, or illustration needs to remain vector-based. Export only the artwork needed for the handoff when the full multi-page or layered project would create unnecessary complexity.

Choose PNG or JPEG for a finished image

Raster output is the simplest option for review, web placement, or a visual reference. PNG is preferable when transparency or lossless pixels matter; JPEG is generally used when a smaller photographic file is more important than lossless editing. Neither retains the original Affinity layers.

Choose PSD when the receiving workflow specifically requires it

PSD can carry a layered image into another compatible editor, but confirm the recipient’s expectations first. A PSD export is not guaranteed to reproduce every Affinity object, adjustment, live filter, text behavior, or blend mode exactly.

Troubleshooting an Affinity file that will not open on iPad

  1. Check the extension. Confirm that the file is actually .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub, rather than a compressed archive, partial download, or renamed file.
  2. Update the app. A message saying the document was created by a later version points to a version-direction problem. Update the relevant iPad Affinity app before attempting repeated imports.
  3. Try the originating app. If a cross-app opening fails or content is incomplete, open the file in the app that created it. This also helps distinguish a compatibility issue from a damaged file.
  4. Move a local copy. Copy the document to an accessible local Files location and open that copy. A cloud provider can show a placeholder before the full file has downloaded.
  5. Verify the transfer. Compare the source and destination file sizes when possible, and copy the document again if the transfer was interrupted.
  6. Separate file failure from feature limits. If the document opens but a tool, layer, effect, page element, or linked asset is missing, the issue may be app-specific support rather than file incompatibility.
  7. Request an exchange export. Ask for PDF, SVG, PNG, or PSD when the immediate goal is viewing, printing, or moving selected artwork and native editability is not essential.
  8. Keep the original untouched. Do not overwrite the only copy while testing a new app version or export. Save a new working copy and compare the result before committing changes.

Publisher, Designer, and Photo: Studio Link is a separate dependency

Affinity Publisher 2 for iPad is documented as an app for creating, publishing, and sharing electronic or print-ready publications. Its related Studio Link workflow requires Designer 2 and Photo 2. That requirement concerns switching into related Designer and Photo personas and tools inside a publishing workflow; it is separate from the basic ability to open an .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub file.

In practical terms, you can test native file opening independently of Studio Link. If you need Publisher’s integrated access to Designer and Photo capabilities, install the required companion apps and keep their versions compatible with Publisher.

A reliable cross-device workflow

  1. Record the source app and version. Before sending a document, note whether it came from Designer, Photo, or Publisher and which generation created it.
  2. Keep a native master. Store the original .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub separately from exports.
  3. Use a predictable folder. Place the file in iCloud Drive, On My iPad, or another Files provider and wait for synchronization to finish before opening it elsewhere.
  4. Open, inspect, and save a copy. Check pages or artboards, text, fonts, linked images, masks, effects, and transparency before editing the working copy.
  5. Export for the recipient’s actual need. Send the native file for continued Affinity work; send PDF, SVG, PNG, JPEG, or PSD when interchange or final output is the priority.
  6. Verify the returned file. Reopen the edited document on the target device and confirm that the expected content and output survived the round trip.

The practical answer is therefore straightforward: Affinity’s iPad apps are designed to open one another’s native project files, but compatibility is conditional on app version, document features, and storage integrity. Treat native files as the editable master and exports as purpose-built handoffs.
