Neither approach has a proven AI-visibility advantage. A direct affiliate program is one way to run affiliate marketing; it can give a brand more control over partner relationships, while an affiliate network can offer access to established publishers and program infrastructure. But the available evidence does not show that choosing direct over a network causes AI assistants to mention or cite a brand more often. The more useful question is which arrangement helps you work with relevant partners who publish credible, substantive content—and whether you measure citations, visits, and sales separately.

What the comparison means for AI visibility

Affiliate marketing is the broader practice of compensating partners for referred business. A direct affiliate program is one way to manage those partnerships; a network is another. They are not opposing marketing channels, and the operating differences between them should not be mistaken for evidence of different AI results.

AI visibility can mean that a brand is mentioned in an answer, that a particular page is cited, or that someone clicks through from the answer. These are distinct outcomes. A program may make it easier to recruit publishers, but it cannot ensure they cover the brand, that an AI service retrieves their pages, or that a citation generates a visit or sale.

What the available evidence says

Affiliate-linked editorial pages appeared often in one study, but that does not prove causation

Glass Digital’s 2026 study analyzed roughly 1,270 answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. It ran 25 prompts for each of three UK retail categories daily from August 26–28, 2026. Of 479 retrieved sources classed as editorial pages, 420 carried affiliate links: 87.7% of that subset. This describes the pages retrieved in that study; it does not show that affiliate links or a particular affiliate-program structure caused a brand to be named.

The category mix differed substantially. Affiliate-linked editorial sources accounted for 29.6% of all retrieved sources in kitchenware, 7.8% in automotive parts, and 10.2% in designer furniture. These figures are observations from three UK retail categories during a short collection window, not forecasts for other sectors. The study found review publishers and specialist blogs more likely than cashback or voucher partners to produce retrievable editorial mentions, and the brand’s own domain was the most-retrieved single source in each tested category.

Search citations do not necessarily produce clicks

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can handle longer, more complex questions and show links, citations, and inline attribution. In an August 6, 2025 statement, Google VP and Head of Search Liz Reid wrote, “And our AI responses feature prominent links, visible citation of sources, and in-line attribution.” Google also said aggregate organic click volume was relatively stable year over year and click quality increased, while acknowledging that traffic trends vary among sites and some quick-answer searches end without a click. Those traffic statements are Google’s own claims.

Pew Research Center’s independent browsing analysis offers a different measure of user behavior. It followed 900 US adults in March 2025 and analyzed 68,879 unique Google searches, 12,593 of which displayed an AI summary. In the study, 8% of visits to Google pages with an AI summary resulted in a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% of visits to pages without a summary. A link within the summary was clicked on 1% of visits to pages with a summary. The study covered Google during that collection period; it is not a measure of all search engines or AI assistants.

Referral performance is not the same as citation performance

A peer-reviewed Marketing Science study published by INFORMS analyzed 12 months of data from 973 e-commerce websites and more than 50,000 ChatGPT transactions. Its comparisons of ChatGPT referrals with other channels vary depending on the performance measure used. It examines referral-channel outcomes, not whether direct affiliate programs outperform network programs for AI citations.

Survey findings describe marketers’ plans, not visibility effects

In impact.com’s vendor-sponsored 2025 survey of 818 marketers in eight countries, 94% of brands said they were experimenting with or planned to adopt alternative attribution models within the next year. The survey also reported that 59% of brands planned to allocate at least 25% of affiliate budgets to creator partnerships. These are reported intentions, not proof that creators or any attribution approach improve AI visibility.

Direct programs and networks: the practical trade-offs

Decision factor Direct affiliate program Affiliate network What it means for AI visibility
Partner relationships Can give the brand direct relationships and control over recruitment and communication. Can provide access to a larger set of established publishers. Neither arrangement guarantees editorial coverage or AI citations.
Program operations The brand designs and operates the program directly; assess recruitment workload, tracking, payments, fees, and terms. Can provide program infrastructure; assess access, fees, tracking, payments, and control of terms. These are implementation considerations, not established visibility levers.
Publisher and content fit Recruit and evaluate partners against the brand’s category and audience. Evaluate available partners against the same criteria. Prioritize relevant reviewers and specialist publishers that create useful, substantive pages rather than assuming a program type is more discoverable.

The reviewed evidence does not quantify a direct-versus-network AI citation lift. Choose based on partner access, operating capacity, economics, control, and the quality of the content partners can credibly produce—not on an assumed visibility boost.

How to evaluate a program for AI visibility

  1. Define outcomes separately. Decide what counts as an AI mention, a cited URL, an AI-referral visit, a qualified visit, a conversion, revenue, and an incremental sale. Do not treat an attributed sale as automatically incremental.
  2. Set a representative baseline. Choose real questions customers ask across buying decisions, comparisons, problem-solving, specifications or safety, and purchase availability. Record the prompt wording, AI service, geography, date, brand mentions, and exact cited URLs.
  3. Recruit a defined group of relevant partners. Consider review publishers and specialist blogs whose subject matter fits the category. Judge the substance and accuracy of their coverage, not simply whether they use affiliate links. Creators may also be worth testing when their work is relevant and discoverable; the survey finding about planned creator budgets is not an AI-performance result.
  4. Repeat the same observation method. Re-run the prompt set over time and log changes in mentions and cited sources. AI answers can vary, so report the service, location, dates, prompt set, and collection method rather than presenting one visibility score as universal.
  5. Connect citations to business outcomes carefully. Track AI-platform referrals separately from conventional search and other channels, then compare qualified engagement, conversions, revenue, partner cost, and incrementality. Compare last-click reporting with other attribution approaches, while recognizing that channel conclusions can change with the chosen measure.
  6. Compare operating cost and control. Include partner access, recruitment effort, fees, tracking and payment operations, and control of program terms. These factors help determine whether a direct setup or a network is workable; they do not establish which one earns more citations.

This is a measurement approach, not a test design already shown to prove causality. A short-term change in citations alongside a program launch does not by itself establish that the program caused the change.

Build partner content without trying to manipulate links

Google Search Central advises site owners to qualify paid links appropriately and warns that excessive sponsored or guest posting without proper link tags can lead to algorithmic or manual actions. Its July 26, 2021 article recommends useful content and a good user experience over link manipulation. Search guidance can change, so consult Google’s current documentation when implementing link attributes.

Keep coverage accurate and useful, disclose commercial relationships clearly under the rules that apply to the publisher’s jurisdiction and platform, and do not require favorable reviews. The cited search guidance is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A paid relationship, an affiliate link, or a sponsored placement is not a promise of AI inclusion.
