Short answer: the EDSFF version is the ADT-Link R27C-BK3, not R27A-BK3. ADT-Link’s own part-number matrix assigns R27A-BK3 to U.2 (SFF-8639), R27B-BK3 to U.3 (SFF-TA-1001), and R27C-BK3 to E1.S/E3.S (SFF-TA-1002). If you have an E1.S or E3.S NVMe drive and want to use it in a standard PCIe slot, R27C-BK3 is the model to verify.
The adapter is specified for PCIe 5.0 x4 with a manufacturer-listed maximum of 128 Gb/s. That number is an interface specification, not an independently measured benchmark or a promise that every SSD, motherboard, slot, firmware combination, or chassis will deliver that throughput. Before buying, confirm the drive’s EDSFF connector, an available PCIe x4 electrical link, physical clearance, firmware support, and a practical cooling path.
The model-number correction that determines compatibility
The title “R27A-BK3 EDSFF E1.S and E3.S to PCIe Slot” combines two different entries in the R27 family. ADT-Link’s product matrix is the controlling reference for the format mapping:

“BK3” denotes the version shown in the matrix with a shell. A retailer may use a broad family description such as “R27 PCIe 5.0 x4 to U.2/U.3/E1.S/E3.S,” but that does not make the physical variants interchangeable. The card, connector, mounting arrangement, and pin assignment must match the drive standard. Order by the exact R27C-BK3 designation when your SSD is E1.S or E3.S.

A secondary review published under the R27A-BK3 name describes an EDSFF installation, but that label conflicts with ADT-Link’s matrix. Treat its EDSFF model identification as unresolved rather than proof that R27A and R27C are equivalent. Its observations about a blower, enclosure, and installation considerations are useful only as attributed, secondary information.
What R27C-BK3 is designed to do
R27C-BK3 is a passive-format adapter that routes an E1.S or E3.S NVMe drive’s PCIe connection to a host PCIe expansion slot. It does not convert a SATA device to NVMe, upgrade a PCIe 3.0 host to PCIe 5.0, or change the SSD’s native protocol. The host and drive still negotiate the highest common PCIe generation that their hardware, firmware, and signal path support.
ADT-Link specifies PCIe 5.0 x4 and a maximum of 128 Gb/s for the E1.S/E3.S product. Since four PCIe 5.0 lanes carry 128 gigabits per second of raw link bandwidth, usable application throughput will be lower after protocol overhead and may be limited by the SSD, CPU root complex, slot wiring, thermal state, or workload. No independent benchmark is established here.
Supported generations
The R27 family is described as supporting PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0, with compatibility for Gen3 and Gen4 devices. This should be read as a family-level compatibility statement, not a guarantee for every revision or system. A Gen4 E1.S drive in a Gen4 x4 slot can operate at Gen4 speeds; a Gen5 drive in a Gen4 slot normally links at Gen4. A slot that is mechanically x4 but electrically x1, or one that shares lanes with another device, can reduce link width.
What the 128 Gb/s figure does—and does not—tell you
- It is ADT-Link’s maximum interface claim for the E1.S/E3.S adapter.
- It is not a measured sequential-read or sequential-write result.
- It does not establish random I/O, latency, sustained performance, or thermal throttling behavior.
- It assumes a suitable PCIe 5.0 x4 host path and a drive capable of using it.
Check your SSD before ordering
EDSFF names describe more than a general “enterprise NVMe” category. E1.S and E3.S drives use the SFF-TA-1002 family, but their physical dimensions and retention features differ. Read the exact SSD label or manufacturer data sheet and verify the form factor, connector, keying, and required mounting hardware.

E1.S drives
E1.S devices are narrow, ruler-shaped EDSFF drives. They are commonly designed for dense server bays and may use a carrier, latch, or heatsink arrangement specific to the platform. Confirm that the R27C shell and retention method do not interfere with the drive’s side rails, heat spreader, or connector shroud.
E3.S drives
E3.S devices are wider than E1.S and have different mechanical envelopes. An adapter that accepts E1.S does not automatically provide the clearance or retention needed for every E3.S thickness. Verify the exact E3.S variant and the shell dimensions before installation.

Do not substitute U.2 or U.3 adapters
U.2 uses SFF-8639 and U.3 uses SFF-TA-1001. They are separate physical and electrical standards from E1.S/E3.S SFF-TA-1002. The R27A-BK3 and R27B-BK3 are therefore not substitutes for R27C-BK3, even though all are described as PCIe x4 adapters.
Host-system requirements
A compatible adapter still depends on the system around it. Check these items in the motherboard or server manual rather than relying on the slot’s physical length alone.
- Electrical lane width: use a slot wired for at least PCIe x4. A long x16 connector can be wired for fewer lanes.
- Generation: identify whether the slot is Gen3, Gen4, or Gen5. The link will normally fall back to the highest common generation.
- CPU or chipset path: some slots connect through the chipset and share bandwidth with storage, networking, or USB controllers.
- Firmware: update motherboard, server, or backplane firmware when the platform vendor documents NVMe or EDSFF compatibility fixes.
- Boot policy: NVMe boot support, UEFI storage drivers, and bifurcation settings are platform-specific. Data-drive detection does not guarantee bootability.
- Physical clearance: measure neighboring slots, GPU backplates, side panels, drive cages, and the card’s shell height.
- Airflow: ensure the drive and adapter are in the chassis’ intended airflow path, especially in a closed server enclosure.
Cooling and enclosure considerations
The secondary review associated with this product family describes a blower fan and an enclosure and advises attention to the fan connection, chassis, host generation, and drive type. Those are installation observations from that review, not independent test results or a universal specification for every R27C-BK3 revision.

EDSFF enterprise SSDs can sustain high power under sequential workloads. An adapter shell may protect the drive and guide airflow, but it cannot compensate for a blocked intake, a low-airflow desktop case, or a drive whose heatsink exceeds the available clearance.
Cooling checklist
- Inspect whether your exact adapter revision includes a fan, fan header, or blower assembly; do not assume that every BK3 listing has identical cooling hardware.
- Confirm the fan’s voltage and connector before attaching it to a motherboard header. If the product documentation specifies a direct connection or an included lead, follow that arrangement.
- Keep the drive’s controller and NAND area in the moving-air path. Do not bury the shell between a GPU and a solid side panel.
- After installation, watch the SSD’s temperature and throttling indicators during a sustained copy or benchmark appropriate to your workload.
- If temperatures rise quickly, power down and improve airflow or add the platform-approved cooling solution rather than treating throttling as a software fault.
Installation procedure
The exact screws and fan hardware vary by revision, but the safe process is consistent.
- Record the drive identity. Note the SSD model, E1.S or E3.S designation, connector orientation, and any carrier or heatsink supplied by its manufacturer.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the operating system, switch off the system power supply, unplug AC power, and wait for standby power to discharge. Follow your server’s service procedure.
- Inspect the slot. Confirm that the chosen PCIe slot is electrically x4 or wider, is enabled in firmware, and has enough clearance for the shell and any attached fan cable.
- Fit the drive to the R27C assembly. Align the SFF-TA-1002 connector without forcing it. Secure the SSD using only the supplied or drive-approved hardware; misalignment can damage the connector.
- Install the shell or bracket. Make sure no part of the E1.S/E3.S body, heatsink, or retention latch is pinched. A loose drive can disconnect under vibration.
- Connect cooling hardware if present. Route the fan lead away from the blades and neighboring cards. Use the documented header or power lead for that revision.
- Insert the card. Press the adapter evenly into the PCIe slot until the edge connector is fully seated, then secure the bracket to the chassis.
- Restore power and enter firmware setup. Check that the slot is enabled and that NVMe or PCIe storage visibility is not disabled by a bifurcation or storage-controller setting.
- Boot the operating system. In Windows, use Device Manager and Disk Management; in Linux, use
lspci, nvme list, and the kernel log. Initialize or mount the drive only after confirming that it is the intended device. - Verify negotiated link status. Confirm the link width is x4 and the generation matches your expectation. A detected drive running at x1 or a lower generation points to slot wiring, firmware, signal integrity, or platform configuration rather than a storage-format mismatch alone.
How to verify the link after installation
Linux
Run lspci to identify the NVMe controller and its PCIe capability, then inspect the device with nvme list. The PCIe capability output should show the negotiated speed and width. Kernel messages can reveal training failures, surprise removal, or repeated controller resets.
Windows
Device Manager should show the NVMe controller without a warning icon, while Disk Management confirms whether the namespace is online and partitioned. The exact negotiated PCIe speed and width may require the system vendor’s diagnostic utility or a hardware-information tool. Windows visibility alone does not prove that the link is operating at x4 Gen5.
Firmware and server management tools
Many servers expose slot presence, link width, speed, and drive temperature in their UEFI setup or management controller. Prefer those values when available because they identify the physical slot and negotiated link directly.

R27A, R27B, or R27C: choosing the right variant
| Your drive | Correct family variant | Why the others are wrong |
|---|---|---|
| U.2 NVMe, SFF-8639 | R27A-BK3 | R27C is keyed and dimensioned for SFF-TA-1002, not SFF-8639. |
| U.3 NVMe, SFF-TA-1001 | R27B-BK3 | U.3 signaling and connector requirements differ from EDSFF. |
| E1.S or E3.S NVMe, SFF-TA-1002 | R27C-BK3 | R27A and R27B are different physical variants. |
The family may share a PCIe x4 concept and similar enclosure language, but that does not make the variants swappable. If a listing title says all three drive standards without clearly identifying the specific model printed on the card or packaging, ask the seller for photographs and a part-number confirmation before ordering.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
The drive is not detected
- Power down and reseat both the SSD in the adapter and the adapter in the slot.
- Confirm that the drive is actually E1.S or E3.S SFF-TA-1002; a U.2 or U.3 drive requires its own R27 variant.
- Try a second PCIe slot known to be electrically x4 or wider.
- Check firmware settings for disabled slots, storage remapping, or bifurcation requirements.
- Inspect the connector for bent contacts, contamination, or a shell that prevents full seating.
The system sees the drive at x1 or a lower generation
- Verify the slot’s electrical wiring in the motherboard manual.
- Remove lane-sharing cards temporarily and retest.
- Update firmware and chipset drivers where the platform vendor recommends it.
- Check whether the drive, adapter revision, or host is limited to Gen4 or Gen3.
- Do not infer a faulty SSD from a lower negotiated rate until the slot topology and settings are confirmed.
The drive disappears under load
Intermittent removal commonly warrants checking seating, auxiliary fan or power connections, thermal throttling, and chassis vibration. Review system logs for controller resets. If the SSD overheats, improve airflow first; sustained high temperature can cause performance reduction or protective shutdown.
The computer boots but the drive cannot be selected as a boot device
Some systems can use an NVMe drive as secondary storage but lack UEFI boot support for that slot or adapter path. Update firmware, confirm UEFI mode, and check the platform’s documented NVMe boot matrix. If the platform does not list the slot as boot-capable, use the adapter for data storage instead of assuming an operating-system fault.
Retail listings and what to verify
A retailer result describes an “R27C-BK3 PCIe 5.0 4.0 x4 to U.2/U.3/E1.S/E3.S” adapter with an enclosure. That result supports the existence of a retailer-described item, but it does not establish current stock, price, exact package contents, or availability through any other marketplace. Listing titles often combine family-level search terms, so verify the model printed on the product and the included shell, fan, screws, and cable before payment.

Who should buy this adapter?
Good fit
- You own an E1.S or E3.S NVMe SSD and your workstation or server offers an open PCIe x4-or-wider slot.
- You need temporary access to an enterprise EDSFF drive outside its original hot-swap bay.
- You can provide adequate airflow and do not require the adapter to add unsupported boot features.
Look for another solution
- Your drive is U.2 or U.3 rather than E1.S/E3.S.
- Your only available slot is electrically x1 or disabled by lane sharing.
- Your chassis cannot accommodate the shell, fan, or E3.S width.
- You need a validated hot-swap carrier, dual-drive bifurcation, or a platform-specific backplane; a single-drive PCIe adapter does not provide those functions by itself.
Verdict
For EDSFF storage, the decision is straightforward once the model name is corrected: verify the R27C-BK3, not R27A-BK3. The manufacturer maps R27C to E1.S/E3.S SFF-TA-1002 and specifies PCIe 5.0 x4 with a 128 Gb/s maximum interface figure. The adapter can be a practical way to use an EDSFF NVMe drive in a PCIe expansion slot, but compatibility depends on the drive’s exact form factor, the slot’s electrical lanes and generation, firmware support, mechanical clearance, and cooling. Treat broad retailer titles and the conflicting R27A review label as reasons to confirm the part number—not as evidence that the three R27 variants are interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is R27A-BK3 the E1.S/E3.S version?
No. ADT-Link’s matrix lists R27A-BK3 for U.2 SFF-8639. The E1.S/E3.S SFF-TA-1002 version is R27C-BK3.
Does the adapter guarantee 128 Gb/s of SSD performance?
No. 128 Gb/s is ADT-Link’s maximum PCIe interface claim. Actual throughput depends on the host link, SSD, firmware, workload, protocol overhead, and temperature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use R27C-BK3 in any long PCIe slot?
Only if the slot is electrically wired for at least four lanes and has suitable firmware, clearance, and airflow. A physically long slot may provide fewer than four lanes.
Will R27C-BK3 make an E1.S drive bootable?
Not necessarily. Boot support is determined by the host’s UEFI and platform firmware. A system may detect the drive for data storage but not offer it as a boot target.
