Microsoft combines substantial recurring dividends with share repurchases, while its FY2026 investing cash use rose sharply. Adobe’s latest cited period—nine months of FY2026—shows large repurchases alongside acquisition-related and other investment spending. The periods do not match: Microsoft’s figures cover the year ended June 30, 2026; Adobe’s cover the nine months ended August 28, 2026. Their raw totals therefore should not be treated as a like-for-like ranking.
What the reported cash figures show
| Company and period | Dividends | Share repurchases | Cash used in investing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft, FY2026 ended June 30, 2026 | $27.0 billion declared | $16.7 billion | $139.5 billion |
| Adobe, first nine months of FY2026 ended August 28, 2026 | Not stated in the cited nine-month figures; this does not establish that Adobe paid none | $6.820 billion | $1.908 billion net cash used |
These are company-reported amounts: Microsoft’s FY2026 annual report and Adobe’s FY2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q. Microsoft reports a full fiscal year; Adobe reports nine months. Investing cash flow also includes more than spending on facilities or equipment, so the figures are not a direct comparison of growth capital expenditures.
Microsoft: dividends and buybacks alongside higher investment
In FY2026, Microsoft repurchased $16.7 billion of stock and declared $27.0 billion in dividends. It reported that $40.6 billion remained under its $60 billion repurchase program at June 30, 2026. That remaining authorization is permission to buy shares, not a commitment to spend the balance.
At the same time, Microsoft used $139.5 billion in investing activities, $66.9 billion more than in FY2025. The company attributed the increase primarily to $51.4 billion more in additions to property and equipment and $22.2 billion more cash used in other investing, primarily to facilitate component purchases. Lower acquisition and investment-purchase outlays partly offset those increases. These are cash-flow categories, not a single measure of organic growth capex. Microsoft describes its spending in the context of cloud and AI infrastructure investment.

Adobe: nine-month cash generation, repurchases and acquisition-led investment
For the first nine months of FY2026, Adobe reported $7.646 billion in operating cash flow, $6.820 billion in share repurchases, $1.908 billion in net cash used in investing activities, and $6.814 billion in net cash used in financing activities. Adobe said financing cash use was primarily attributable to repurchases. It attributed investing use to the Semrush acquisition, ongoing capital expenditures, and investment purchases net of maturities.
Adobe used the remaining capacity under its March 2024 $25 billion repurchase authorization during the period. A further $25 billion authorization, approved in April 2026 and running through April 30, 2030, had $24.55 billion remaining at August 28, 2026. As with Microsoft’s program, authorization is capacity that management may use or not use; it is not a forecast of future repurchases.

Adobe’s June 11, 2026 Q2 release reported revenue of $6.62 billion for the quarter ended May 29, up 13% year over year. CEO Shantanu Narayen characterized the result this way: “Adobe delivered record revenue of $6.62 billion in Q2 reflecting strong AI-driven demand across our customer groups and we are raising our full-year fiscal 2026 revenue and non-GAAP EPS targets on the strength of that performance.” This is management’s explanation of performance and outlook, not independent evidence that investment or repurchases will produce a particular return.

How to interpret the difference
- Payout mix: Microsoft’s reported FY2026 distributions include both dividends and repurchases. The cited Adobe nine-month figures emphasize repurchases and do not establish a current-period dividend total.
- Reinvestment: Microsoft’s increase includes property-and-equipment additions and component-related investing cash use. Adobe identifies the Semrush acquisition, capital expenditures, and investment purchases net of maturities. Neither company’s investing cash-flow total is synonymous with growth capex.
- Cash generation: Adobe’s operating cash flow figure covers nine months. It should not be compared directly with Microsoft’s full-year investing outflow; those are different measures as well as different periods.
- Shareholder value: Gross dollars spent on buybacks alone do not show whether repurchases offset employee equity issuance, reduced the net share count, or were made at attractive valuations. The totals also do not establish return on capital or future shareholder value.
