Choose Preview for occasional, free exports and basic page handling; choose Adobe Acrobat when editable Word files and OCR for scans matter; choose PDF Expert when you want a Mac-focused editor that also converts to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, and text. Preview is included with macOS, but Apple’s documented export options do not include DOC or DOCX. Acrobat and PDF Expert explicitly support PDF-to-Word conversion, while their costs and device coverage differ.
The short answer
The right app depends on what you mean by “convert.” If you only need to turn a PDF into a JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or another PDF variant, Preview is usually enough and costs nothing beyond macOS. If you need an editable Word document, use Adobe Acrobat or PDF Expert. For a scanned PDF, prefer a tool with documented OCR support: Acrobat explicitly describes OCR-assisted conversion, and PDF Expert lists OCR among its features. Apple’s Preview documentation does not describe an OCR-to-Word workflow.
| Need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional image or PDF export | Preview | Built into macOS; File > Export supports common image formats and PDF options. |
| Editable DOCX or DOC output | Adobe Acrobat or PDF Expert | Both explicitly convert PDFs to Word; Preview’s documented formats do not include Word. |
| Scanned pages that need editable text | Adobe Acrobat | Adobe explicitly documents OCR conversion of complicated scans to Word. |
| One app for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, text, and PDF | PDF Expert | Readdle lists conversion in both directions for those formats. |
| Mac-only ownership instead of a subscription | PDF Expert lifetime plan | Readdle lists a Mac-only lifetime option; terms can change. |
Conversion quality still depends on the source PDF. A digitally generated document with selectable text normally gives cleaner Word output than a photographed page, a complex magazine layout, or a scan with skewed pages. Always inspect the converted file before treating it as an exact replica.

A PDF is designed to preserve a page’s appearance, not to preserve the editable structure of a Word document. Converters must infer paragraphs, headings, columns, tables, line breaks, fonts, and images from the page description. The result can therefore be visually close while still requiring editing.

DOCX versus DOC
Acrobat’s conversion instructions let you choose Microsoft Word and then save as either DOCX or DOC. DOCX is the newer XML-based Word format; DOC is the older format used for compatibility with legacy Word versions. Unless an older application specifically requires DOC, DOCX is normally the better target for current Word installations because it is the modern format Acrobat identifies for Word documents.
Editable text versus an image of a page
Exporting a PDF page as JPEG or PNG creates an image. It does not create paragraphs that you can reflow in Word. OCR is the separate recognition step that turns characters in a scan into selectable, editable text. A conversion can contain both recognized text and page images, so check whether you can place the cursor in every paragraph before assuming the document is fully editable.
Adobe Acrobat: the strongest choice for Word and scanned PDFs
Adobe positions Acrobat as a full PDF workflow rather than a simple exporter. Its documented Word conversion supports DOCX and DOC, and Adobe says that conversion carries fonts and formatting into the Word file. That statement is a product claim, not a guarantee that every unusual layout will be perfect: columns, floating objects, forms, and decorative typography can still need cleanup.
Convert a normal PDF to Word in Acrobat
- Open the PDF in the desktop Acrobat application.
- Select Convert.
- Choose Microsoft Word.
- Select DOCX for the newer Word format or DOC for the legacy format.
- Choose a destination and save the converted file.
Open the result in Word and check headings, page breaks, tables, footnotes, and images. If a page was originally built from positioned text boxes rather than flowing paragraphs, the Word file may preserve the look with separate objects instead of producing a clean, continuous document.
Convert a scanned PDF with OCR
Acrobat explicitly documents conversion of complicated scans using optical character recognition (OCR), exporting the recognized text to Word. OCR is what makes a scanned contract, printed letter, or photocopied form searchable and editable. Recognition is not the same as proofreading, so review characters that are easy to confuse, such as O and 0, I and 1, punctuation, superscripts, and small type.
For a scan with several columns, compare the reading order in the Word file with the original page. Tables may arrive as text and tabs, separate text boxes, or a mixture of text and images. Keep the original PDF so you can verify names, amounts, dates, and signatures against the source.

Acrobat plans and device coverage
The Adobe product page accessed in 2026 displayed Acrobat Standard at US$14.99 per month and Acrobat Pro at US$19.99 per month. These are displayed prices, and Adobe’s current offer, billing term, tax, geography, and eligibility should be checked before purchase. The cited product information describes Acrobat use across desktop, mobile, and web, which is useful if the same PDF workflow must follow you beyond a Mac.

Acrobat is the sensible choice when conversion is one part of a larger professional process involving repeated editing, annotation, signing, and document handling. It is harder to justify for a one-off image export when Preview already meets the requirement.
Preview: excellent built-in export, not a documented PDF-to-Word converter
Preview is Apple’s macOS-native PDF and image utility. Apple’s Preview guide says you can export a PDF or image to save it as a different type of file. The documented path is File > Export, followed by a choice in the Format menu.
Export a PDF or image with Preview
- Open the PDF or image in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Open the Format menu and select an available type.
- Set any format-specific options, choose a filename and location, and select Save.
Apple’s image-conversion documentation lists HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG, and TIFF. Depending on the selected format, Preview can expose controls such as JPEG quality, Quartz filters, and PDF encryption. These are useful for publishing an image, reducing a file for sharing, or creating a protected PDF, but they do not turn the page into editable Word content.
Why Preview cannot answer “convert this PDF to DOCX”
The cited Apple documentation describes export and image formats, not a native command that writes DOCX or DOC from a PDF. If Word is absent from Preview’s Format menu, that is expected rather than a hidden setting you need to enable. You can copy selectable text from some PDFs and paste it into Word, but that is manual extraction and will not reliably preserve the original layout, tables, or images.

- You need a free, occasional export and already have macOS.
- You want a PDF page as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or another listed image type.
- You need lightweight viewing, page selection, rotation, or basic file handling before sending the PDF elsewhere.
- You do not need OCR-driven editing or a Word document.
Preview is also a useful first check: select text in the PDF. If no text can be selected, the file is likely image-based, and a Word conversion will require OCR in an application that supports it.

PDF Expert: Mac-focused conversion with a broader format list
Readdle describes PDF Expert as a converter that works in both directions. Its feature page lists PDF conversion to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, PNG, and text, as well as conversion of those file types to PDF. It presents PDF-to-Word as producing an editable Word document, making it a direct alternative to Acrobat for users who prefer a Mac-centered application.
Convert a PDF in PDF Expert
- Open the PDF in PDF Expert.
- Open the application’s conversion or export command.
- Choose the required destination format, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, PNG, or text.
- Set the save location and create the converted file.
- Open the output in its target application and compare important content with the source PDF.
Menu wording can change between PDF Expert releases, so use the conversion command shown in your installed version rather than relying on an older screenshot. The important choice is the destination format: Word for editable paragraphs, Excel for spreadsheet-oriented data, PowerPoint for slide-style content, an image format for a visual copy, or text for plain extraction.
OCR and editing workflow
Readdle lists OCR among the features included with its conversion plans. That makes PDF Expert a candidate for scans, but the presence of OCR does not remove the need to check recognition. Inspect figures, columns, tables, and unusual fonts, and preserve the original scan for reference. PDF Expert also combines conversion with editing, annotation, signing, and page tools, which can reduce the number of separate Mac applications in a document workflow.
PDF Expert plans and device coverage
Readdle’s pricing page accessed in 2026 listed a yearly plan at $79.99 billed annually and a Mac-only lifetime plan at $139.99. Both listings include conversion and OCR among the feature set. Prices, included features, and eligibility can change.
The yearly listing covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The lifetime listing is Mac-only. Readdle also displays 4.7 from 211K ratings and 30 million users worldwide on its feature/conversion page; those are vendor-displayed figures, not independent conversion-accuracy benchmarks.

Scanned contract, receipt, or form
Start with Acrobat when OCR reliability and a professional workflow are the priority; Adobe explicitly describes OCR conversion for complicated scans. PDF Expert is also a reasonable Mac-focused option because Readdle lists OCR. After conversion, verify every critical field against the scan and do not assume a signature, seal, checkbox, or handwriting became editable text.

Preview is the simplest choice. Use File > Export, choose JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or another available format, and adjust quality or Quartz-filter settings when offered. There is no reason to pay for a Word converter when the required deliverable is a picture of the page.
PDF containing data for another office application
PDF Expert is the only tool in this comparison whose cited feature list explicitly includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as PDF destinations. That breadth can matter when the same source PDF feeds several kinds of work. Acrobat’s cited instructions establish DOC/DOCX conversion, while the cited Preview documentation establishes image/PDF export rather than spreadsheet or presentation conversion.
A practical conversion and quality-check procedure
- Identify the source type. Try selecting and copying a sentence. Selectable characters indicate a text PDF; a page that behaves like one picture needs OCR for editable output.
- Define the required result. Pick DOCX or DOC for Word editing, an image format for a visual copy, or another destination supported by the chosen application. Do not choose an image export when you need reflowable text.
- Choose the least expensive tool that meets the requirement. Preview handles image/PDF export; Acrobat and PDF Expert handle documented Word conversion; Acrobat has the clearest documented OCR-to-Word path.
- Convert one representative page first. A title page, a table, and a dense text page reveal different problems. If those pages are unusable, converting the entire document will not fix the underlying layout.
- Inspect the output in its target application. Check that text can be edited, headings remain in order, tables have the right cells, images are present, and page breaks are sensible.
- Proofread high-risk content. Compare names, numbers, dates, legal wording, addresses, and citations with the original. OCR and layout reconstruction can introduce errors that are not obvious from a quick visual glance.
- Keep the source PDF. Treat the converted file as an editable working copy, not as a replacement for the original record.
Common problems and fixes
There is no DOCX option in Preview
Preview’s documented Format choices cover PDF and image exports, not a native Word conversion. Use Acrobat or PDF Expert for an explicitly supported PDF-to-Word workflow, or copy text manually if the document is short and layout does not matter.
The Word file looks right but text cannot be edited
The converter may have placed a page image in the Word document. Test by clicking inside a sentence and selecting individual characters. If the page is one image, run an OCR-capable conversion instead of an image export.

OCR has incorrect characters
Zoom in on the source and compare ambiguous characters, punctuation, and small print. Correct the Word file while keeping the scan open as the authority. Low-resolution, skewed, noisy, or decorative pages are especially likely to need manual correction.

Columns or tables are out of order
PDFs store visual positions, while Word stores flowing content. Rebuild complex tables or reorder paragraphs after conversion. For a short document, manual cleanup may be faster than trying several converters; for repeated work, choose the application that best fits your wider editing workflow.
Fonts or spacing changed
Acrobat states that fonts and formatting come with its DOC/DOCX conversion, but unusual fonts, missing font files, text boxes, and tightly positioned elements can still behave differently in Word. Compare the output on the Mac where it was created and embed or replace fonts when your publishing workflow requires consistent rendering.
You need the same workflow on several devices
Acrobat’s cited product information describes desktop, mobile, and web use. PDF Expert’s yearly plan covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while its lifetime option is Mac-only. Preview remains tied to macOS. Match the plan to where the files must be opened and edited, not just where the first conversion happens.
Which one should you buy?
Pick Preview when cost and simplicity dominate
Preview is the clear choice for occasional exports, image conversion, and basic PDF handling because it is already part of macOS. It is not the choice for an editable Word deliverable or a documented OCR-to-Word process.
Pick Acrobat when conversion is mission-critical
Acrobat is the best fit when DOCX/DOC output, scanned-document OCR, and a broad professional PDF workflow justify a recurring subscription. Its documented Convert > Microsoft Word path is explicit, and Adobe describes OCR for complicated scans. Recheck the current Standard and Pro offer before subscribing because the displayed US prices and plan terms can change.
Pick PDF Expert when you want a Mac-first alternative
PDF Expert suits users who want Word conversion plus Excel, PowerPoint, image, and text destinations in one Mac-focused editor. Its yearly plan extends to iPhone and iPad, while the Mac-only lifetime plan may appeal to someone avoiding an ongoing subscription. Confirm current feature and device terms before purchase.
For most Mac users, the decision is straightforward: Preview for image/PDF export, Acrobat for the most clearly documented OCR-and-Word workflow, and PDF Expert for broad format conversion with Mac-centered plans. None of the three removes the need to proofread a complex or scanned document before sharing the converted file.
