The Adafruit CH552 QT Py puts an 8-bit 8051-family microcontroller into a compact, modern board with USB-C, native USB, STEMMA QT, and an onboard RGB NeoPixel. It is not a typical QT Py programming experience: it does not run CircuitPython or MicroPython and cannot use Arduino libraries. You can use the Arduino IDE with Adafruit’s ch55xduino board package, but the compiler targets C rather than C++.

What is the Adafruit CH552 QT Py?

It is a small development board built around the CH552, an enhanced E8051 core compatible with the MCS51 instruction set. Adafruit’s guide describes the combination as a compact way to experiment with an older 8-bit architecture using contemporary board features. “Vintage” describes the processor family—not the USB-C connector, board format, or the whole development workflow.

The board is Seeed XIAO-compatible in size, form factor, and pinout, and its castellated pads allow it to be mounted flat on a circuit board. Its USB-C port handles power and programming. Adafruit lists the board as product ID 5960; check the official listing for current price and availability, which can change.

What hardware does the board provide?

Adafruit’s product documentation specifies a 16 MHz operating speed, 3.3 V power and logic, 16 KB of program flash, 256 bytes of internal RAM, and 1 KB of xRAM. The small memory budget is an important part of the board’s character: it suits compact, focused experiments better than projects that depend on large runtimes or substantial application code.

These are board specifications, not a promise that every peripheral can be used simultaneously without considering pin assignments, power draw, and the needs of attached components. Consult Adafruit’s pinout guide when planning a circuit.

Can the CH552 QT Py run Arduino?

Yes, with an important qualification. Adafruit documents using the Arduino IDE with the ch55xduino board support package, but the toolchain compiles C rather than C++. The board does not support Arduino libraries, so sketches and examples that assume the familiar C++ Arduino ecosystem may not work without substantial adaptation.

  • Activity LED lights up when the SD card is being read or written
  • Push-push socket with card slightly over the edge of the PCB so its easy to insert and remove
  • Works great with Arduino, with tons of example code and wiring diagrams
  • Skill Level: Component or Part

Adafruit’s setup guide calls for Arduino IDE version 1.8 or higher and installation of ch55xduino. Because setup instructions and software versions can change, follow the current Arduino IDE setup guide rather than relying on an old package-installation walkthrough.

Does it support CircuitPython or MicroPython?

No. Adafruit explicitly says the CH552 QT Py does not run CircuitPython or MicroPython. If you want to write Python on a QT Py, or expect the straightforward beginner workflow associated with CircuitPython, this board is the wrong fit.

Its appeal is instead the chance to work with a constrained 8051-family MCU and a C-based environment while still having practical interfaces such as USB, analog inputs, PWM, SPI, UART, and I2C. Treat it as a low-level learning or embedded-I/O board, not as a drop-in replacement for more capable QT Py models.

What can you build with it?

Adafruit’s guide demonstrates several small projects that match the board’s available resources:

Adafruit (PID 2975) Parts Pal. The ultimate companion for an entry-level maker learning electronics
  • Project box with breadboard and jumper wires
  • Resistors, Capacitors, LED
  • Semiconductors (diodes, transistors, 7805, LD1117-3.3, 555 timer)
  • Photocell, Thermistor, Vibration sensor, potentiometers
  • Piezo buzzer, tactile switches, SPDT switches, male and female headers
  • Read a potentiometer: use one of the analog inputs to observe changing voltage.
  • Explore capacitive touch: use the touch capability on A0–A3.
  • Control the onboard NeoPixel: experiment with a built-in RGB indicator without adding a separate LED.
  • Read an I2C sensor: connect an AHT20 temperature and humidity sensor through STEMMA QT. Adafruit’s example uses a separate four-pin JST-SH cable; the sensor and cable are accessories, not included board contents. See the I2C guide.

The CH552 also has native USB device capability, including CDC serial and mouse or keyboard HID use cases. Those options make it useful for compact USB experiments, although the limited memory and nonstandard Arduino-library situation should shape the project design.

How do you recover if uploading stops working?

USB-C is used for both power and programming. Adafruit documents a manual bootloader procedure for cases where the serial port disappears or HID firmware interferes with normal uploading:

  1. Unplug the board’s USB cable.
  2. Hold down the Boot button.
  3. Reconnect USB while continuing to hold Boot, then follow the upload process in Adafruit’s manual bootloader instructions.

If you only have Micro-B USB cables, Adafruit notes that an adapter will be useful.

Who should choose this board?

The strongest reason to choose the CH552 QT Py is the combination of its 8051-family architecture and compact modern hardware. It makes sense if you want to explore a small C-based microcontroller, build simple USB-device or sensor projects, or use a XIAO-sized board with STEMMA QT and an onboard NeoPixel.

Choose a different board if your priority is CircuitPython or MicroPython, broad Arduino-library compatibility, more memory, or a more beginner-friendly high-level workflow. Adafruit contrasts the CH552 with faster QT Py options such as an ESP32-S3, but its materials do not establish a comprehensive, like-for-like performance benchmark. Compare the architecture, supported languages and libraries, interfaces, pinout, and connector needs for your project rather than treating the CH552 as a general-purpose upgrade or replacement.
