Digger is a 2026 climate-disaster satire starring Tom Cruise as an oil magnate who tries to save humanity from a catastrophe he unleashed. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, it combines an apocalyptic premise with broad comedy—and, for viewers who want to know more, a major theatrical-play reveal. Here is what the film is, when and where it opened, and what to know before choosing a screening.
What is Tom Cruise’s Digger about?
Warner Bros. describes DIGGER as an original film about the world’s most powerful man racing to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he himself unleashed. The Associated Press identifies Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, as an oil magnate and describes the film as an over-the-top climate-disaster satire. That is a fictional premise, not a source of evidence about real-world climate science.
The story’s central tension is plain enough: Digger wants to be seen as humanity’s rescuer, even as he is connected to the crisis threatening it. The satire comes from putting that self-appointed savior at the center of an ecological emergency.
Who made the film?
Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed DIGGER and shares screenplay credit with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman. Warner Bros. credits the story to Berman, Iñárritu, and Jez Butterworth. The official cast includes Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Warner Bros. also lists Iñárritu, Mary Parent, and Cruise among the producers. Warner Bros.’ official film page has the studio’s premise and credits.

At a promotional press event reported by AP, Cruise said of Iñárritu: “He’s never made something like this before, nor have I.” In a prerecorded video at the same event, Iñárritu said of Cruise’s work on the role: “The transformation he went through was astonishing.” These are the filmmakers’ promotional remarks, not independent evaluations.
When did DIGGER open, and how long is it?
The dates and runtimes vary slightly by market and listing. Warner Bros. says the theatrical release began internationally on 30 September 2026 and opened in theaters and IMAX across North America on 2 October 2026. Dolby’s listing gives 1 October 2026 and a 128-minute runtime. AP also reports a 128-minute runtime. For the UK, the BBFC lists a cinema release date of 2 October 2026 and an approximate running time of 129 minutes.

Which theatrical format should you choose?
Warner Bros. confirms an IMAX release, while Dolby lists the film for Dolby Cinema. The film was shot entirely in VistaVision, according to Warner Bros.; that is a production format, not a promise that every venue will show it in that format. The sources establish theatrical options but do not establish that every market or cinema offers every format.

- Choose a standard screening if the story and performances matter more to you than a premium-format presentation.
- Look for IMAX or Dolby Cinema if you specifically want one of those listed theatrical options; verify that format on the individual session listing.
- Check locally before making plans. A national release announcement does not guarantee that a particular venue has a current showtime.
What rating and content advice should viewers know?
AP reports a US R rating for “pervasive language.” That is the US rating information in the cited report. The UK BBFC record gives separate UK classification advice: very strong language, occasional violence, a sustained natural-disaster threat sequence, sexual references, and references to climate change and natural disasters, among other items. These are not interchangeable classification systems; consult the relevant listing for your country.
Spoilers ahead: the theatrical-play reveal
Stop here if you want only the spoiler-free premise.
The Atlantic’s release-day review says the apparent apocalypse story is revealed as the production of a play called Fossil Fools, with characters acting and rehearsing. That disclosure changes how the catastrophe premise can be read: the film is not simply presenting a disaster narrative but also drawing attention to performance and the construction of a story. This account comes from the review, rather than Warner Bros.’ spoiler-light marketing description. Read The Atlantic’s review only if you are comfortable with that plot information.

The practical choice depends on what you want from it. The premise points toward broad, dark comedy built around a climate-disaster scenario and a powerful man’s attempt to recast himself as a savior. If you want a straightforward disaster film, the satire—and the play conceit described by The Atlantic—may not be what you expect. If you are interested in Cruise in a grotesque magnate role, Iñárritu’s formal choices, or a deliberately exaggerated ecological satire, those are the film’s clearest draws in the available descriptions.
